MODS SUGGESTION THREAD (help, complaints, request): crying is not accepted.

I know I am mod.....i know what i need to do to keep this board running. but i...take it for what its worth...i dont appreciate closing thread (or erasing them) without letting the person violating know why they did wrong. i rather erase the words in the thread and leave a message for the person...i.e.

no spamming


but its been long going an im not pointing any fingers cause honestly i dont know. but for future reference...let the members know why there thread is about to be closed....or why its about to be erased. it not hard to just edit the post and leave your nice message

only right i feel. an im not taking sides cause anyone on this board knows i listen to both sides before making a call. but for future reference other mods....lets just show why we do what we are doin....


and to the members new and old...if you have a problem about something. dont continue to pound or flame about it...do something about. talk with another mod about it or take it to wiz IF you feel that you are not being fairly treated....you would do it if it was your real life job or school. i appreciate the co-op...i have a feelin this can eliminate the "mods aint doin their job.....abusing their job...etc" its alot to pay attention to this board an a little help is needed cause we are not on here 24/7...everyone has something from work to women to kids to women n' stairs that need attending to so help us a little bit...

every thread i've made in the last month has been ninja closed without any explanation whatsoever. i was considering making an all purpose "'Why was my thread closed?' thread" for everyone to use.

it's a dangerous thing to not allow people a venue to question authority. mods, just like everyone else, should be accountable for their actions and their behaviour should be open to public scrutiny.

what do you folks think of a thread to discuss the closure of threads?

What's funny is, all these people bitch and moan, and make stupid threads, but almost 2/3rds of you never man up and talk directly to the mod in question. You'll then turn around and try to get popularity points by making either another stupid "Fuck the Mods"/random complaint thread which will go nowhere and eventually get closed due to spam, or posting random BS in other threads.

I don't know why I have to say this again, but if you have an issue, don't air that shit out, talk directly to the Mod(or a Mod, in the case you either don't want to talk to the mod in question, or you don't know which one did it), and we'll give you an answer. Well, people will question a mod, they are told the reasons, and then they keep going and they get struck. Ronin gives cats mad chances to state their claim in threads, plus people can't deny the entertainment of when somebody gets bitchslapped online. I don't care who you are.

It's funny, which is exactly why it's fine sometimes i think. of course there's the point where the shit gets out of hand, but Ronin and Koop have been able to keep it locked down pretty tight.

Besides RC, RU, Koop, and me, all super mods and admin have mod powers in GD too. A lot of times, I'll log on, only to see a bunch of closed threads (I always assume another mod closed it for a good reason, so I never argue those) and a few PMs asking me why I allegedly closed your thread—except I didn't close your thread; I wasn't even online.

That said, I do ninja-lock some threads sometimes, but I usually am either in a rush, or I assume that the reason for the thread closure should be self-explanatory. I mostly just merge and edit threads though.

In general i like to play it safe, my standards are that if fighting games (or gamers in general) are going to be more than a joke, then we should at least be of a higher standard than an uncensored aol chatroom. Generally if i see your thread and dream about this, i'm unhappy:

The problem we have is again, your comparison to other threads. Wow, your thread lasted 2 days, another thread lasted a whole 3! what a bias! Again, the standard shouldn't be what someone else can get away with and for how long.

Some things also change, for instance the first SF4 thread lasted a long time, now they are closed on sight. Some threads were closed on sight, but are now let go a little (parrying/roll cancel). Accountability is good, but not to every minor discrepency that someone has a gripe about, that is letting the inmates run the asylum, which already happens too much anyway.

In fact the discrepencies are a good thing for the posters. I'm sure srk could have a script to auto-close threads and auto-ip-ban users, but then it may interfere with productive posting, so instead srk has a rather loose system, where some things may slip through the cracks.

Now given a choice, i'm sure srk prefers the loose system, but at the same time, the modding won't be completely even. To someone that is mad they didn't slip through the cracks while someone else did, i'm sure it 'seems' unfair, but again, that's comparing to other posters, not to the standard. If it was run by a script then yes someone would need to be accountable if a thread lasted 3 days, but the margin of error is different with people that aren't paid, and would probably get fired if they actually read through their forums during work hours.

Now based on this i will be checking to see what the standard really is, if it's really as low as some believe it is, then i apologize and you can post about all the rape you want, animals, cartoons, go crazy, i doubt i'll be here to care.

Is okay then, i understand its a bug because i hate it when my shit just gets deleted, i rather have it close cuz it looks cool seeing a lock on a thread. However, it would've been fair to close that other guys thread to because that was more that what i was asking. Mines wasnt help me out at the whole course. Just an easy microsoft excel work creating a made up budget which any office leet person could do in less than give or take 30min.

I agree. There are a few forums that have absolutely no need for the [img] tags (like all the xbox live ones). If it is a matter of bandwidth, just take it away from the xbox live forums and give it to Hardware Technical Support and Premium Only. Thanks for looking into this mods...

Hey, SK and I just discovered some new mod features: if you double-click the empty space next to a thread title on the topic list, you can edit the title in real-time. Also, if you double-click the far-left envelope icon, you can close/open threads without opening them.

Might come in handy.

I use search. The problem IMO is that people make threads and title them with shit that isn't easily searched for. Thread titles need to be clearer because if you search the body of threads, you'll get an insane amount of hits.

SRK now only accepts gifs. It's not because SRK is glitchy. It's not because you're a mac user (how the hell did you come up with that?) It's just what it says. JPEGs, PNGs, etc. are actually not supported file types. Get a graphic converter, and just pop those pics from .jpg to .gif, and they'll upload fine.

its impossible to find threads here. the search engine here is a piece of utter crap.

you can type a thread title in VERBATIM, and it WONT show up in the search results, ESPECIALLY because any words less than 3 letters long are automatically weeded out.

For example, someone reposted the SF vs MK 2 flash. Hence if you search for a MF vs SF, NONE of the words would be allowed in the search, making the thread impossible to find.

Or, a common dilemna is when I'm looking for the What song was that thread?

Again, what, was, and that get removed as search params because "they are too common", Those three words might show up a lot in *** POSTS ***, but when I'm doing a search specifically for ***TITLES***, limited to GD, I should be able to get my fucking result. Now, if I type the title in VERBATIM (and only the what song was that thread, mind you), i get it, however, since I dont post in it that often, my memory fades and I can't remember the exact name of a title, so its hard to find the thread.

THIS IS FRUSTRATING.

in order to find a thread, I must remember a post I made, and look for posts by e, searching for keywords that I know I made in that post. this is ghetto.


My suggestion, if its possible, is to tweak search params:

One, allow 2 letter words in searches for TITLES.
Two, allow "that" "what" and etc.. in search for TITLES. this will make everyone's life a lot easier

is there a reason this is the case? is it to force people to sign up in order to view the forums? because thats kinda silly. most of the people coming to srk are regulars, so its just causing a major inconvinience for browsing at the gym/school/work/library etc, where you definitely dont want your login remembered. and new people will be less likely to join if they can't even read threads without being forced to sign up.

Is there by any chance a way that normal member's avatars can have a bigger height? I find it nearly impossible to re-scale images or find images suited to be used in the forums. I'm not saying 'Increase the height of avs for normal members!', I'm trying to figure out if in the near future normal, non-premium members, will be able to use avatars with bigger hieghts.

This is another thing that I think might not be possible to be done in the forums. Of all the forums I am a member of, only one forum links me to threads I posted in in my User CP that have been replied to. I post in A LOT of threads here & it's usually hard to keep track of them all. I know of the Subscribe option, but I usually forget to use it. Is there a chance that in the near future, a member's User CP will display the recently replied-to threads that a member has posted in?

you have to cancel it through paypal, as the subscription is created through them.

we want people to be able to read srk to get a sneak peak and what they could be getting if they are a full fledged member. so now its set to only allow the first page of a post to be read, then it requires a user account to go any further.

I'd simply like to know why the post limit is 1 post every 240 seconds... that's insanely high compared to the other forums I've been to. The highest I've seen before this was 60 seconds and that drove me up the wall.

I can't surf this forum like a normal one, I have to write a response, wait 2-3 minutes on something else, normally get distracted and I'm gone from the site for half an hour or more. If I could make posts in that time it wouldn't happen.

SRK has always had a 240 second limit to prevent the traffic and overload of posts from crashing the damn place. That and it's stopped trolls and flamers from other forums from "spamming" the place up.

When logging out, it gives me an error the first time, and I have to relog out to properly log out. This happens everytime. Might be a problem for anyone who doesnt check after clicking the log out and instead just X's the window. Someone else could roll up on the computer and be on an account they know nothing about.

And I can see why SRK has stuck with the 240 post count, especially when a few people go over to Gaia Online and piss them off, the Gaians come here trying to spam the place up and they're stopped in their tracks because they have to wait 4 minutes to repost.. As for the banner ads and premium fees, I was implying that those things could fund the site. There's goodle ads on the site and an Evo banner. I didn't realize the banner was always for Evo, thought it was just another banner, I don't look at what they are anymore.

When logging out, it gives me an error the first time, and I have to relog out to properly log out. This happens everytime. If Money and To Prevent Crashes are the two main reasons the 240 second rule is in place, why don't we make different levels of premium?


Non-Prem - Scrub shit, no benefits
Premium - Rep, Big avs, uploading images, etc.
Premium Plus - Same shit, but maybe the 240 second rule is cut in half, also costs more
Premium Supreme - Same stuff, but 120 second rule is cut in half, costs even more

If these people really want to post more, they can, but they should have to pay for it. When they're shelling out 50 bucks for the ability to post once a minute, maybe they'll start to see that posting all the time isn't that important.

But of course, you put the possibility out there, so you don't change the status quo, you just add another way to make Money. And since not everyone gives a shit about the 240 second rule, you won't have everybody doing this, meaning the system isn't in constant danger of crashing.

Both reasons the 240 second rule is in place are circumvented, with only minimal consequences to the server, if any.

I'm not sure if anyone has ever brought that up; I'm sure that someone has to have done it, because it's a pretty simple idea. I just didn't see it in the pages arguing over this, so I thought I'd suggest it.

Still, all monster forums like this tend to have fees, I of course can't do the math but 2 bucks a year per member would probably waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more than take care of the fees, combined with the banner ad you could make every member premium. Spam wars- If they pay you money to come flame/spam you it must be pretty desperate, I really doubt more than 10 would pay to come spam so you temp ban them, easy. Perma-ban if they keep spamming after the temp-ban runs out.

Money- Everyone's paying a dollar.


I doubt it would happen since free forums rarely impose a charge, but a dollar is nothing. A dollar a year would more than pay for the forums and I'll gladly pay my contribution. Once my paypal works I'll sign up for premium membership here.
