Since I've played online, I've seen a lot of good custom color edits. Unfortunately, for every 1 good color edit, there's 10 bad ones. Straight black, red, or straight green looks HORRIBLE with no stepdown. I know that there's an option (under XBL, Options) to turn off the viewing of other people edits, but I like to see new ones from time to time, so I keep it turned on. People seem to compliment my edits, so I would like to think that I am doing a good job.
(btw, "d.c." means "default color").
Here's what I do: If I want to adjust a color, like say, turn Shen Woo's pants from black to red, what I would do is:
1.) Find another character that uses the hue of red color that I would like, (example d.c Blue Mary's shirt, d.c. Mai's outfit, or d.c. Tizoc's tights/mask (for a darker red).
2.) I select one of them, and I take a look at the numbers in their color scales that they use for that version of red. They will be anywhere from 3 to 5 different shades of color (used for light, middle color, and shadow).
3.) Once I view the numbers, I jot them down, back out, and then select the character that I am going to modify (in this case, Shen).
4.) I go to Shen's color scale (over the hues that color his pants), and then I replace the values there with the numbers that I've jotted down from the other character.
5.) PRESTO! You now have red pants with a freakin' GRADUAL STEPDOWN FROM LIGHT TO DARK. This makes your edit look more "professional" and not an eyesore.
DON'T FORGET TO SAVE!!
You can (of course) do this for any other color, including skin. For example, using d.c. K' (3-tone skin color) or d.c.Kusanagi (5-tone dark skin color), you can make another character with dark skin.
Don't forget to cycle through each character's available color variations. Sometimes, there are already versions with colors that you want, and it may mean less adjusting for you.

A few days ago, I saw that Clark didn't have a plain military green-style color for either of his palettes. I simply:
1.) Picked Leona d.c.
2.) Got the value for her green uniform and wrote them down.
3.) Selected Clark and changed his uniforms' colors to that of Leona's.
4.) Save
Then, I decided to change his skin color to a darker tone.
1.) Went to Clarks' skin values, and saw whether he had 3-squares/values for color, or whether he had 5-squares/values for skin color. I think he only had 3, so then:
2.) I view K's d.c., and got skin-tone values from that.
3.) Selected Clark again, and replaced his skin numbers with K's.
4.) BAM. Now I've got a green Clark with dark skin.
Just practice. It takes only a little bit to pick up.
I hope my tips help you.
