Ok! here are the entries for the 6th avatar battle challenge!

Again, I want to thank everyone who entered, as well as my generous sponsors, Evil Morrigan and OrangeCat. As you mayknow, the three of us are providing the prizes for this competition.

First off, the standard rules:

#1: No one discusses the avs until ALL FIVE judges have passed judgement. This is to prevent people from giving away who the artists are. This is not limited to the artists. Even if you did not submit an av, please refrain from commenting until after the judges have voted. The judges do not know who has submitted an av, and I don't want you giving away to them that you DIDN'T submit an av by starting to comment on them.

#2: Judges: you are to pick your favorite 3 in each category based on whatever criteria you want. You will then order them from 1 to 3. Your #1 pick gets 3 points, your #2 pick gets 2 points, and your #3 pick gets 1 point. The points will be tallied, and a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for each category declared.

#3:Judges can feel free to discuss among themselves any aspects of the avatars they like. They may confer with each other before voting, but do not have to. Feel free to discuss what you like or dislike about any of the avatars --1 Restriction, though! Judges may not speculate as to who the artists are, as your speculations may affect the other judges.

#1: What can I say? Composition is solid, and the ultra small text is well done enough to be readable. It stuck out for me because it is clever due to the liberal interpretation of the weapons category to include maracas.

#2: I'm a sucker for elegance. The only problem I had with it was that the original scarface graphic has pacino in all white clothes. Something about the sandles and the black gi makes be think of Paula Abdul's Straight Up video.

#3: Nice border, and the color scheme comes together well. The only thing that I would change is sword. If there was a little blood dripping off the sword, it would unite the piece as one piece rather than foreground/background with no interaction.

Well done, but I'm not a fan of airbrush, liquify, blur, smudge, or soft focus blending tricks. If it was a little darker, and everything was de-saturated a hair except for the flames at the bottom I would have liked it better.

Good job, a few issues. The solid black lines give it a cell-shaded look and the font isn't going along for the ride. It would be better with a graphitti font or something that lends itself to the same cell-like stroke that the main graphic has.

First of all, blending objects with outer glow makes me vomit. That aside, the color scheme is spot on, and it has few design problems aside from the fact that it looks a little tutorial shopped to death.

I'm a big fan of destroyed courier. (For the cheap seats: courier is the font used by typewriters, and destroyed courier is commonly used in typeset art pieces to emulate a broken typewriter.) The colors need to be redone so that it looks a little cleaner, and I would have placed this one in the top three if the text said, "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang."

i uploaded both so i can see what they look like on srk so i could see what needs to be fixed easier (i dunno why that helps me lol).... but i was planning on just using the standing animation with his arms folded, and have some of the bg mix in with him

oh and also, my first ideah was lightning. i had the animation just right.... but it was way too big =(.

The composition is nice. Doesn't feel too empty at any point. My only complaint is that the sword sticks out too much.

The Bloody background gets +10 cool points. I really would have liked to seen a different border though, as the red seems to take away the darkness of the piece. Blood on the sword would have been a nice addition, but only if it was done right.

3rd was a really hard decision, because I thought a few deserved it. There isn't too much going on in the avatar, but that's a good thing this time. Also, black and pink are two colors that go together nicely.

Simply amazing. It's soo fluid that I wonder how the maker got soo much in without going over the size limit? Great border as well.

The comic style works great with this avatar. Nice addition with the sound effects/words, but what kind of sound is "Ba-Krash?" My only complaint is that the end doesn't flow into the beginning.

My 3rd place choice came down to "Nightmare" and "Capcomstrike." Both good pieces, but I could really make out some of the words in the "Capcomstrike" without squinting. This avatar, of course, would have been the clear winner if the eye wasn't so fast and jerky. The colors and borders are nice. I like how the border disappears near the top of the avatar.

anyway, for those of you who may be wondering where I got that nm sprite, I made it. I took his SC3 concept art and sprited over it. It took me a week or so to do, and I still never finished the feet.

One could have mistaken this for a Slide av since he's the "eye blinkity" tagger on the boards. However he usually does that for the pretty ladies. I was never really a person for static animated avs, I love seeing a story get told or something show up. This is done extremly well though to make me look past that if only for this one time. Animation is very smooth, although I had a slight problem with the purple lightening...I can't put it into words but there is something slightly off with it.

Despite the lack of movement the composition is very good...very well balanced. The only real problem that I would point out with this; which conicidentally is part of it's charm; is it's use of transparency. It doesn't look all that hot on the SRK default colour setting, nor would I think in any other one (I'd have to check). If there was one that would be the best for it. The x-Box live grey looks fabulous with it, as well with anything brown. But good av and deserving of first place on quality alone.

The first thing that pops into mind is how cool this av is. Wonderful concept, great use of sprites and colouring. But as you rewatch it over and over again, you pick up minor flaws that kinda bring it down a few notches. It could be the computer I'm using, I don't know, but the main thing that kinda brings it down is...how busy it is. It's great that so much was crammed into the 48kb limit, yet it goes by a bit too fast for just one or even four watches.

Another problem is the timing, especially at the end where Cable and Sent meet in the middle. A small dramatic pause could have elevated it a bit more than what it is now. The "Fight" font just seems to block out the encounter far too quickly. I don't know if it was a mistake, but a thing that bugs me on flow level is how there is still a black bar at the top of the screen when Cable and Sent first flash. It sort of makes that scene specifically out of place. And my final gripe...perhaps another background could have been used. Sent and Cable being fairly futurisitic and technological perhaps would have been better suited in a post apocolyptic setting or a technological one. But that's just me. Otherwise a very good av. Love the comic idea, infinitely better than what either Suncoco and I attempted in his thread.

Wonderful sprite edit/creating. Very nice, and it makes me want it to be fucking animated and want to play a SC-2D. But sadly runs by a bit too fast. The fire looks a tad unnatural, the energy ball is good, but the eye blinking...it seems a bit too mechanical for a living sword. Of course the inherent problem with making a solid loop avatar is in order to add more animation, you will have to repeat the loop a few times over to animate the object you want to move independently. Seeing how wonderfully detailed this scene is, I doubt there would be any time to add more frames to properly animate the eye. Everything else is excellent and love the border and flaming purple energy is a great subtle touch.

Simple, wonderful. Almost a bit too simple though. It's clean, it has wonderful effectss and other than the "Y" almost touching the edge of Yoshi's mask and thus kinda throwing off the composition slightly, it's a great av overall.

The av works greatly alone on the idea. Unfortunately a lot of things are quite wrong with it at least for accuracy's sake. The radar could have used a dot to indicate Jin. The font for ammo could have been moved to the left a bit in order to align a bit more to the money amount. The fonts for the stats need to be cleaned up a bit. And the pan from the beginning could have been stalled for a second...just to increase movement a tad more. But other than that, a good av.

True to it's name it's a pretty terrible av, at least of the bunch. I do like it, love the colours and stroke effect. If I were tweak it just slightly to make it the Best Worst av ever, it would have to do with the timing of the text "Lame, unoriginal and boring". Each pause after each word's appearance should be slightly longer, in order to make a bit more emphasis on the crappiness. You need a bit of time for the viewer to absorb in the words. I guess it's just me because I kinda picture a strict english prof just reading off adjectives for some student's essay. But I do love how you switch to a black more simplified look coupled with the blocky text. It fits it very well.

i really liked this one even without the name. But once i saw it with a name included, it does look better. the background looks amazing and feels like it has texture. like u can feel the rough edges.

this reminded me of a video i made for another videogame. how he comes into the picture and his names comes along. the thing is i felt it was so short..i wish u could cycle through a couple of more characters and it'll look a hot intro to a game..unfortunately the srk bits limit screws us again.

Okay, in response to this discussion, I'm going to open up a bit (maybe a bit too much?) and share some touchy-feely crap.

There are four reasons I hold these ABC's, besides the #1 all-out reason - TO HAVE FUN:

The first reason is to encourage an active community here in IMM, which has been stagnant of late. I'm glad it's working, too, because people have been popping out of the woodwork who haven't made avs in forever.

The second is growth. All the artists who enter these things have room for groth (ok, except maybe PsychoSquall, who's too fucking good already and someone needs to crash his computer so the rest of us have a chance...I kid, I kid. I hope you make entering a regular habit, PS!) I know that I've expanded and developed my technique here way more than I would have just doing the odd request or two. When I'm competing, i feel I have to enter my best, so I keep pushing the envelop of what my "best" is. I'm relying more and more on sprite edits, because they're something I'm very good at, and also something that makes me stand out, gives me a unique style. I've noticed several contestants who've gotten better from one battle to the next. I've noticed a lot of improvement from artists like SunocO, Nastradamus, mvsc2demon, and BIG BEEF!, as well as others.

The third reason is a bit of a personal one, and one of the reasons I shell out $6 a week to make this happen. I love avatars. I love looking at them, and this gives me an excuse to see some of the best efforts from a host of av-makers here. I get to see so many avs that use techniques and ideas that I never would have thought of on my own that inspire me to do better than before (read: flag to rip off later - lol).

The fourth reason is to show off. This lets everyone show off whatever cool things they can do, and get noticed for their style. This is a great place to gain a "following" (if it can be called that) Enter a consistent and unique style in these comps, and people will recognize your work when they see other people wearing your avatars. On a more personal leve, I get to show off to you guys. Because I suppose I'm still a bit insecure as the "new man on campus" and I get an ego boost when people compliment my work. This is a bit of a sly way to get everyone to look at my latest work without making a big "Look at me! Look at me!" type of fuss.

Keeping that in mind, here's what I think about Chibi. I think his Constructive Criticism is great, though sometimes a bit too harsh. However, as an artist, harsh criticism usually makes me come back for more, hoping to out-do myself. I'd rather overly-harsh CC than the sugar-coated kind. As for not accepting some entries, there's this: "Another Unoriginal AV" maybe shouldn't have made it. It clearly had no chance of winning, and didn't really for any of my 4 reasons. I think I may not accept joke avs like I have in the past 3 battles ("Sorry About This Avatar," "Foul Stench," "Ryuto," "Another Unoriginal AV," etc.). Though "having fun" is the primary goal, I'm not sure how "fun" it is to have these mixed in with teh serious entries.

On the other hand, I think you're dead wrong about "Weapons of Choice" It's style is unorthodox, and you may not care for it, but I don't see how it's any less a serious entry than the others. "Effort" is hard to quantify, and what makes art "good" is hard to define. Should Jackson Pollack's work be criticized because it didn't take as long to make as my "Nightmare" avatar? I think we all know who the better artist is... "Weapons of Choice" had a unique style, a clever idea (women using their bodies as "weapons") and while it wasn't the sistene chapel, it has a very good warhol-eque "pop-art" quality to it. I also think Master Chibi is a very good judge. Of all the judges I've had, I value his opinions the 2nd most. Sadly, my favorite judge is OC, but I'd rather have his avatars than his judging... Chibi's harsh brand of "asshole criticism" makes him a unique and valuable member of my judging panel.

...but that doesn't mean you should let him run wild...

yeah, it does get quite busy in the middle but because of that, I was able to squeeze all that animation under the limit. I wish I could have made it slower but I honestly didn't know how I should have went about doing it. As for the background, I didn't want to part with the bison level cuz it was the main reason why I came up with the idea...even though it didn't come out how I wanted (grass rustling, clouds moving, lightning etc..), I still didn't want to abandon it.

Anyways, good shit everyone, thanks for the props, PsychoSquall is still lord of the av and I can escape the 19.5 k limit for at least a month.....IM RICH BITCH!

to explain myself *which i shouldnt have too* IMO women are known to use there bodies to get what they want, ie, my ex. her lips was my weakness. all she would need to do was say to me, "mmm, i want you", or she'd kiss me on "my spot". also other women use other private parts like breast, hips, thighs, booty, and cooter to there advantage.

Quiche: Rather than limiting battles to content, you could also try focusing on techniques for criteria. For instance any subject, but the av has to make use of a particular brush stroke or something along those lines.

Yes, you're right -- it's a condensed, slightly l33tspeak-ized form of the phrase "trust no one." When I was in high school, I was a really big (obsessive) X-Files fan, and that was one of the show's taglines/slogans (and I guess it kind of fit my personality/outlook at the time) -- so that's where it came from. I first used it as my screen name/handle in early/mid '98, I think, when I was first discovering the internet. Originally, I wrote it as simply "trustno1," then it became "trustn01," and, finally, the version it is today (in part because it was already taken some places in its less cryptic forms.) It doesn't really feel attached to its original meaning anymore; I've been using it for so long it just feels like my name ;)

Sometimes I just use tru ("true") or tru3 ("true three") for short, too.

Yeah, I'm not really sure why I used a 3 instead of a 5 for the s, but it's been like that forever now -- so I'm stuck with it.

I placed this first entirely on the merit that I think it has the best technical execution. The colours work well, the blood is great and random, and the shading makes it very clear what is foreground and what is background. That is a slight problem I found during this round of ABC because a lot of people seem to be losing focus by either muddying the objects into the background or having no focus at all.

However it didn't really stir me as much as the second placed avatar. I don't really feel anything more than an appreciation of technical achievement from it.


"Xianghua"

This one I like very much. It's still a bit scattered and having a feeling of put together rather than coming together, however what really stood out for me is the colours. I found it interesting that we are almost fooled into thinking that Xianghua is actually holding the sword up where in reality it's just a sword slapped on there. Nevertheless it does create a great sense of flow into a "V" fashion. The colour scheme is great, and having the blade's blue contrast with the dress's red and having that theme continue throughout is very good.

The only problem however is that I really did feel this was kinda put together like pieces slapped together to see if they work. The scratched up red could have bled into the rest of the BG, kinda filling it and connecting everything together. But other than that good avatar.

Like #1, great on a technical level. Howeqver it doesn't really do anything great for me. The border colour and font colour could have been something different. Perhaps a bit bluer, but I doubt even that suggestion would improve it since it might just fade too much into the BG. It has very good balance nevertheless.

Good idea, done very well in the theme it's trying to emulate. However it's a tad too centered. Why I say this is because it basically throws the font's positioning off, kinda wrecking the flow and balance of the av. I would just suggest that the Kenshin figure be moved over too the right, to divy up the av space into 2/3 and 1/3, perhaps not that extreme but enough to allow the font to breathe.

Nice colours, however biggest problem is what plagued #2. It just seems a bit too slapped together. What's worst is that it's like 3 themes/styles are being slapped into one av. I love the font grundge, but it's a bit too much of that particular style compared to the picture. The picture isn't really emulating with the font. And the lipstick is just a mess having slight lip creases, but not enough to really define it. Instead it looks too smooth and out of place compared to the rest of the av.

I think that at least some grundge/scratchs should have been applied to the girl, just to make for consistency. The kiss should have been one solid colour instead of a shaded blurry thing...and some white hightlights should be added to the gun and possibly the hair in order to bring the whole thing together, to give it a bit of connection and flow.

Technically good, the BG is good and compliments well with Fried's colour scheme. It does seem a bit weird that the picture is at sometimes hard to differentiate between the BG, but it's good nevertheless. Great balance.

Very cute, i love the composition. The colours are a tad bit off, could have been more well thought out. I love the bold solid colours which really fits the picture well.

Neat idea, but I'm not feeling it. The BG could have had a bit more substance, or at least reflected the colour book theme, but istead it sort of made it more similar to a tapestry than a colouring book. But in some ways I think that is how I kinda envision it now that I mention it. I'm going to move it because of the mention of trying to be a Japanese woodblock prink.

It's a bit blurry for my tastes. Like Kojiroh, the subject blurred into the BG, but this is a bit more. The font's inside is far too similar to the BG which adds to the FG melting into the BG. The theme of fire or burning doesn't seem to be expressed too well, especially considering that if it were to be the main theme, it is marginalized by making it only partly visible in the lower right corner.


"Glowing Taki"

Nice, but the composition is way off. I like the BG and the additions of the lines, but the subject doesn't seem to fit in there, or at least it didn't compose to well with the BG. Also I'm a bit biased to torpedo tits pictures of taki which seemed far too abnormal for me. The colour scheme is done very well, with the whole reds complimenting each other. But had the picture been of something else, I guess it would have been better.


"The Soul Still Burns"

It's a neat idea, but the composition could use a little work. The font is uninteresting and really brings it down. Some more work could have been put into how the flames interact with the sprite and the BG is far too minimalized to have any impact as a BG. It would have been either to make the entire BG flames or use less flames.


"Samba de Maracas"

I can't read the font, the balance is off and it's like two difference colour schemes are fighting against each other with the blue stats box and the red information box. The character is good, although a bit blurry as well with the maracas. I like how the feeling of depth is created with the slight drop shadow.

Any font is hard to read, the picture is a bit too colourful to really see what is going on. But in terms of consistency, Voldo also blends well into the picture, making it very natural. The problem however it's just far too colourful to properly see what's going on without having to concentrate.

Far too light, altough the choice in keeping what features of Raphael is done well. However I can't see too much beyond that. The balance is very good as well with the colour scheme.

Tied for last. Hollowpoint ink is just terrible, I can't really say anything good about it except for how well the inverted colour scheme is. Weapons of choice is just a mess making it very hard to see what is what. WoC should at least focus on one or at most two pictures, but not 4 at a time. Also the inversion shouldn't be just wherever or whenever, but instead actually creating a flow or shapes. I do notice where the tagger tried to actually make relative square shapes kinda going into each other, which is a good attempt, but just doing it doesn't guarantee flow.

this one just owns....... lol jp, but about the blood not being on the sword... i original had blood splatter on mitsurugi as well as the bg, and i had some blood on the sword (but wasent really dripping) and i thought it was too much... and thats when i changed him to blue and i thought keepin the charactor clean with a bloody background was nice contrast.

I took the image of Soul Calibur stabbing into Soul Edge (the Soul Edge area), selected parts of it, resizing and morphing it to fit into the av dimensions. It was done in many separate sections, and blending it all together. A couple misc. details were added. The eyeball was done by selecting the pupil, and simply moving it, or resizing it. And some of it was done simply by eye. (no pun intended)

second part - yeah it was a dumb question..i was just curious what the pixel size was and i just googled it. i made the wallpaper already but it doesn't look that great.. what is vector trace? and how would i do that? i do everything the hard way by using the pencil or spray tool =(

The textures are fabulous! I won't comment on the right side being empty, because it isn't with Chibi's name there. However, couldn't you have used a darker font? I can barely see the lettering!

I like the fire in the corner a lot, but the text is kinda bland. Not to mention the fact that the whole av seems to be behind a smoky haze...which is cool in theory, but in practice just makes everything look blurry. Still, I like how the artist drew on some cuts/bruises on Mistu's face...but what's that yellow paint under his eye for?

I think the sword stand out just a bit too much. Also, I'm not a fan of the red cross-hatching bg that Shizuma's done in the last 2 contests. Just not my thing. I love how it *almost* looks like X is holding the sword. clever placement,

I dunno what to say about this that I haven't already. Making that sprite was one of the bigger pains in my ass that I've dealt with for an avatar. Still, I'm very proud of how it turned out. Very professional looking, I think. I really wish they'd make a Namco x Capcom 2d fighter so I could see that bad boy in motion...

Actually, the eye blinking, which is what everyone picked on, was DarkDragons idea. I shared the av with him, and he suggested the blinking. Even after making it, I wasn't sure about the blink because it was so fast, but DD told me to go with it because it showed "effort". lol. I still took 2nd place anyway, and I wouldn't have beaten PsychoSquall, even without the blink. No hard feelings, DD. I'll probably share avs with you again some time because your other advice was so helpful.

The lips in the upper right are skewed. The inverted part is shifted down and to the right. However, in Taki's bust, or Ivy's ass, there's no shifting of that type to be seen. The shifting there on the lips, but nowehere else didn't jive with me.

Don't give up yet. I already mentioned that the idea behind "Weapons of Choice" was great. Your execution was kinda shitty, but hey, you don't have photoshop...what do you expect?

Technique is only half the game, and I see a bunch of people here with solid/passable technique and not enough good ideas to back it up.

Also, you gotta get more discerning with the chicks you post in those threads, man. Some of 'em are hot, but some of 'em are just plain fuggly. Like that chick in your av...I'm sorry, but that looks like a man in drag...look at those pectorals! Sadly, most of the people here on SRk don't know any better either...

Anyway, in conclusion, your ideas are good (just look at those avs you directed that DG made!), but the most I can say about your execution is that you need photoshop.
