www.nintendowifi.com (http://www.nintendowifi.com) is now live. Go there to see stats and other info on current wi-fi games. I'm tempted to buy Tony Hawk just to go wi-fi, because apparently, you can do it now.

Mario Kart comes out next week. I propose that we add our friend codes here and get some SRK wifi play going on. Yay or nay?

I'm still sort of confused. This is how I understand the situation: You can connect your DS wirelessly to any wireless network and play online. The adapter that Nintendo is selling is for people to connect to their land-line modems and create a wireless network exclusively for the DS.

Is that correct?

From what I understand, if you have a wireless router, you can connect through that. The USB adapter (available only online for purchase) is a "key" that you use to connect if you have a regular wired router, or no router but have ethernet. I think the advertised range is something like 30 feet.

Matchups: If I read correctly, you can basically match up with anyone. There are options (play with people in Europe, or Japan, or local) that you can choose when matching up. You can play with anyone. However, for some games (maybe all?), if you want to be able to chat at the same time, you have to input the users Friend Code (I thought it was MAC address, but I think I'm wrong). You will get your friend code the first time you connect to wifi using a game. This is to protect younger gamers from harrassment or from harsh language. Friends will be added to a "friend roster", and you can have 36 friends per game save file. There's mad info on the wifi site, check it out if you have more questions.

Depending on the game, if more than one friend is online playing in Friend mode, there is no way to select which friend Nintendo WFC connects you with. Check your game manual for online play.

Lock it, it says on the manual that its to lock me into your friends list.

You have to go into your router settings to do this. There's a way to configure your router through a browser, look it up for your model. The easiest way to set up is to go to your router configuration (after you figure it out), then add your DS's MAC address to access the router.

yeah. on the last page of the mario kart manual, it talks about locking. i have two other friends that are on now, and i have them locked, and i have you, so this should work if we all do this at the same time... which is now. Haha. I'll give it a few more tries to work, but it angers me.

All that locking does is prevent the friend (who is locked) from being deleted from the Friend list when the list limit is exceeded.

When you exceed the friend limit, a random friend is deleted to make room for the new one. Friends who are locked will not be deleted in this fashion.

So locking isn't necessary for gameplay really.

Alright, I've updated the first page with the other codes, make sure you tell people when you are adding them so they can do the same. For the people that are having problems with the net when they connect, are you using the WEP key? Cause I'm not and it doesn't seem to interfere. If you allow your router to accept the DS's MAC address, you can connect that way.... but I don't know much about routers, so I don't know if this affects anything.

(I still haven't connected to anyone cause of the server problems Nintendo WFC was having :-( guess I'll try this afternoon)

PSP uses 802.11g and DS uses 802.11b, I think. G is better than B, btw because G has a broader signal range than B...at least that is my understanding....its either that or G has a higher transfer rate.

It's something you check in the game. You have to have connected to the WFC at least once to have a friend code. After he's done that, he can go to Nintendo WFC -> Friend Code -> Confirm Friend Code and then you can trade passwords. Also, playing a local wireless game against someone automatically adds them to your friends list.

This allows you to upload an image, and it'll covert the image onto a 32x32 grid using the MK pallete so you can use it as an emblem. You still have to draw it yourself obviously, but it's easy and useful for those more complex pictures.

Yeah it can sometimes take awhile. I've only done friends matches and it's taken at least 5 minutes to detect all my friends.

Yeah it can sometimes take awhile. I've only done friends matches and it's taken at least 5 minutes to detect all my friends.

It won't find friends that are in games already.

And I believe (not certain, don't hold me to this) that it searching for friends only finds friends that are ALSO searching for friends. I could be wrong though.

Well, I was able to go online last night, but I tried again tonight with no luck. I assume it's something to do with my router / static ip. These static ips make everything so much harder.

What IP do I have to connect to in order for my DS to connect? The router IP or my actual ISP IP? I had to put my static IP info in my router, and had to use a router IP to connect my computer to the router, which then the router connects to the internet. I'm just confused as to what I did yesterday to make it work, and why it isn't working today.

He's good cuz' he's got the fingers for it. SSBM teaches you Wave Dashing, short hopping, shuffling, etc. After mastering those superior techs., MK should be a walk in the park.

First and foremost, that diagram is not ghettolicious, it's a damned good one.

I used to use the snaking tatic back when I played CTR hard core (why do Mario Kart fans hate on it so much? Of course it's a MK clone but it has it's own unique way of handling carting and the game is really awesome, last great Crash game ever.) and I don't think it's cheating per se but straight aways were designed for you to go straight and not drift-turbo-drift your way through. Once I get the game so I can master the tracks like I did in CTR I'll use the tatic but sometimes I think that I'd just like to have a snaking free match up. I wish there was a way to really set up matches and communicate with your opponents on what tatics are alright to use in a race.

What is Animal Crossing all about?

Oh and Tony Hawk American Sk8teland is 29.99 at K-Mart ($10 off). This game has a more online features then Kart.

What games would you like to see on Nintendo Wi-Fi (since it's hella bleak after Metroid Prime: Hunters).

Here's my top five games that I'd like to see adapted for online play (ranked).

1) Advance Wars DS: Wouldn't mind a sequel but only if it's online.

2) Bomberman DS: Need I say more?

3) Pocket Fighter: (like wtf capcom, you've passed over this game countless times in the remake/port department. You dicks!) This sort of game fits the DS well.

4) Puyo Pop: This could be really awesome since finding fellow Puyo lovers is hard enough as is. The online play could consist of quick matches and dare I say, 8 way brawls?!

5) Pokemon: I haven't bought a new Pokemon since Gold so if a new one was released with online features I'd be inclined to pick up the series again.

~Other honorable mentions:~
A classic FPS port (Like Doom or Duke Nukem or Quake or something with the typical staples of FPS games plus co-op. Gawd I loved co-op gba Doom)

Metal Slug/Contra (a brand new game with 4 player co-op in mind),

Sonic but with Knuckles and Tails back into the fold (more multiplayer options like in the Advance Series)

Metal Gear (if you remember MG: Ghost Babel on GBC there was a multiplayer mode. I think that a remake of one of the older NES Metal Gears would be cool and with 4 player versus or even 2 player co-op would be nice)

Fucking Diddy Kong Racing.

An Arcade style dog fighting game.

F-Zero (there is a significant lack of F-Zero on the DS, what with all the systems that could handle the game having at least one title. I hope Nintendo annouces something next year.)

A Kirby game (I remember there being a Kirby game for GBA that had four player support).

Same here. But snaking can be a real hand killer *ouch*. The thumb muscles in my left hand are killing me. People were dropping me like a hot plate yesterday. I wouldn't mind it as much if it weren't for my current gripes about wi-fi.

As for actual connections and stuff, I've had a few wierd things happen. Like freezes. Although I think the freeze only occurs when everyone drops but you. And certain opponent cart behavior that I will assume is lag. Stuff like:

Instantaneously zipping from one side of track to the other or back and forth.

Flying

Having two other racers CLEARLY in front of me (by about 3 or 4 cart lengths) and still being in 2nd place

The guy riding my tailpipe gets the item box/winning place when on my screen, he's just huffing carbon monoxide.

Hitting someone with a green shell and they aren't affeected for a few seconds.

I probably have trouble finding matches cuz I usually don't get on till after 10pm. Maybe the weekend will have better competition.

OK I finally got my DS.

Sonic Rush is the best 2d sonic since Sonic 3K back on genesis.

And Mario Kart DS is a drug. I played for many hours last night (till like round 3:50 am) and played a bit of online kart. No lag at all. Good stuff.

For everyone asking about WEP and all that:

WEP is not something that you set on your computer, it is set on your router. WEP is an encryption method that allows your connection to be secure. A WEP key is a 'password' that allows computers to decrypt the data transmitted with the router. You can still play on your DS if you don't have WEP security enabled on your router. WEP is the required encryption if you want to play using a secured network.

Setting up WEP depends on your router, but the basic steps are:

1. enter your router's settings (often done from your computer's browser)
2. enable WEP security
3. select a WEP key
4. for every computer/device that is going to use the network, setup the key

For your router, follow the instructions of your router.
For your computer, you specify the WEP key to use under your wireless connection's preferences (alternatively, you will be asked for the key the first time you connect to the network)
For your DS, NintendoWiFi.com has a VERY GOOD set of instructions on how to setup your network preferences. In a nutshell, if your are not using security, its a breeze, else, you do have to make some setup.

you can race up to 3 others. i never start a game with less than 3 people. i think it's boring with 2. 90-95% of the people i play disconnect anyway, so the last 2 or three matches are always 1:1.

no, snaking isn't "legit" its been picked up by the people who are playing the game so as long as you just do turbos you'll be fine ........ I do them in the same direction on turns ...and snake on straights "snake" is just used because its like you're slithering left-right like a snake

Its Pretty Much easier to powerslide / snake anywhere. Put it this way, It takes more skill to powerslide on more narrow levels like DK Pass or Rainbow Road, however much less on courses like Figure 8 circut and Baby Park. Im no champion myself bu i have seen some sick stuff. For example i played a dude who non stop snaked on DK Pass :-P.

- By the way Yoshi only helps sliding a tad bit but the reason people say to use him is cause if u wanna play right away he's the best option.

I learned that too when i had the game, except i never knew you could do it so easily with bowser, i couldn't do it myself with him.

using luigi has my main, i would snake on straight ways, and be mostly in the middle of the road the entire time at about the same rate you're doing it.

if both players can do it, it's no big deal. i could be winning the entire lap snaking to get randomized by an item last second and lose. which is why i kinda hate the game.

but if i ever get a hold of the game again, i'll play you 1v1, bowser vs luigi, snaking all the way, items or no items

because the term "snaking" refers to when you do it on a straight. Since you're using left-right turns and it looks like a snake slithering ... that's why that's called "snaking" I'm only talking about the term ...:looney:

That way we can have the individual DS game threads but when we have major events or tourneys with our DS wifi games we can post them there. Plus we could put all the Friend codes on that page. There's no official MKDS thread other than the one I made, I searched already, this thread is about wifi discussion that's why we need another one because I for one prefer the discussion to stay on topic and on ONE TOPIC alone. It makes things more organized.

THE FIRST EVER SRK MARIO KART DS TOURNAMENT!

UPDATE=>:Holiday Shoppers Tourny (practice tournament to establish a working tornament system)

Date and Time: December 16th @ 11pm EST (tentative)



Official Rules (Work in progress)

- All SRKers are eligible and all karts are selectable.

- Mario Kart DS: SRK Cup chat room for talk right before (like choosing tracks) and during a tourny and then go to SRK and post final results and thoughts about the tourny after it's all over. If we end up having a lot of tournys I suggest we start a minimalistic web page which will serve as a scoreboard.

- Tracks will be debated on before a match starts.

- *Matches will consist of four SRKers. So only four of us go on at once for a Friend Code race. Then we sign off and come back to the chat and post the results. Then the next group of SRKers do the same.

- Snaking is allowed.

- Make sure you have a 2 bar or better connection before hand.

- No dropping allowed or you will become ineligible for the next tourny. But if you lose your connection or are dropped from the race IMMEDIATELY tell everyone in the chat that this has happened to you. On the same token though you will not be able to reenter the current tourny unless there is a slot open . So if you got dropped in the final round then consider yourself screwed. However, SRK is allowed to vote on such matters if the need arises. Case by case basis perhaps.

- The top two racers from a match move on to the next round and so on and so forth. I figured this would be a good way to give those in 2nd place, well, a second chance (no pun intended) at winning. I know I've had VERY close races before.

So for example.

Round 1:

Joe, Smoe, Floe, Doe race

Joe: 36
Floe: 34
Smoe:24
Doe:16

Joe and Floe move on to the next round:

Round 2:

(from a previous match up)Dick, Rick, Joe, Floe race

*I've never done a FC race before so do you just pick and choose from your list (depending on who is on at the time) who you want to race or not?

by the way i think friend codes and matching for MKDS should be in here. I suggested a common thread to be stickied.

no dude people were first sayin make a Animal Crossin thread now there sayin make a new Thread. And now X pac is sayin this wasnt for MKDS. But im sayin it should be.... cause there already was one for it. X pac is bein a jerk to u by takin credit away from u. Ill im sayin is I wanna make a Thread with all the links to all DS wifi games and one that contains all Tourney and Friend code info.

Please dont be rude to me, especially when i defended u. I didnt originally wanna split. And still dont. I just wanna get one common link thread stickied. Which I requested. If u vote for that in my post it would be kind of u. I think ur thread should be renamed the MKDS thread. Cause thats all thats talked about in it. I know what was intentended. But dont say stuff that xpac thinks. I have talked about MKDS in this thread alot and only here. I made animal crossin thread so we wouldnt have wacked out 20 conversations about different stuff. I think havin one common thread with just links and tourney would be nice eh? Our whole DS community seems less connected and im just tryin to make it so everyone is happy. I personally thought u would understand.
