Even though Sasuke is primarily a close-range fighter, if he had to take some distance away from Neji, his super fast Shunshin could instantly give him the space he needs, and he can work with Katon, Chidori Senbon, Senei Jashu(which would only serve as distractions against Neji, since they would be probably be mostly ineffective against his Hakkeshou Kaiten), and Kuchiyose.

But even if Sasuke's forced into an extreme close-range fight with Neji, Neji isn't guaranteed to dominate. Sasuke's got the Sharingan, Kenjutsu, and supplementary/defensive Ninjutsu at that range to work with. Kusanagi would probably cut right through the first step of the Kaiten, and Neji would have a tough time touching Sasuke thanks to the Sharingan and the full-body Chidori Nagashi.

Sasuke would likely destroy Neji as he is now.

It's not the character deaths that bother me. In fact, I was a proponent of killing Neji and Chouji in the Sasuke betrayal arc. It's the reasoning behind why and how he chooses to kill the Sannin at this point that bothers me. The most annoying part about the manga for me, and the reason I have stopped reading, is Kishimoto is taking shortcut after shortcut in the arena of character development, and the consistency and believability of the characters is suffering because of it.

And, this has been pointed out many times, but, the supposed main character of the series is a terrible character at this point. Naruto used to be a gutsy, determined hard luck character who pushed through adversity and went to prove that, despite everything, he was a great person that others could trust in. I loved watching Narutos character interaction with others before Shippuden, when he was out to prove that he was the best, wouldn't take excuses from himself or anybody else, and actually pushed himself to a better state than he was when a given arc stated.

Now, the extent of Narutos interactions with others is crying about Sasuke and how he needs to protect his "bond" with a guy who disowned him and everyone else for the sake of revenge. It just wrecks Narutos character to see him whine about Sasuke all the damn time, and never hold his friend accountable for what he did. What happened to the Naruto that got pissed when others would cause damage or harm to people, even people he barely knew, and step up to the plate?

That's why I always felt Neji and Chouji should have died. That way, Kishimoto couldn't make Narutos ridiculous obsession with forgiving/reclaiming Sasuke seem like anything but the garbage that it is. Sasuke is still a damn cool character, and is a practically perfect villain, but the way Kishimoto writes it, everyone around Sasuke still treats him like a hero, which ruins their characters and lessens the impact that Sasuke should be having.

I understand that many people read the manga different reasons and characters, but for me, I read the series for Naruto himself. And Naruto himself is a joke now, he doesn't have any skill, talent, ability, guts or determination in comparison to his old self, and everything written about his character is only written in relation to how he feels about, or compares to, Sasuke. Terrible.

Wow. This entire post is, nearly word for word, exactly what I wanted to post.

The Sasuke retrieval arc could have been wonderful if Chouji and/or Neji died. Think back to the scene where Sakura and Naruto confront Sasuke for the first time after the timeskip. What if things had gone something like this...

Naruto: Sasuke! You betrayed the village, and Chouji and Neji died trying to save you!
Sasuke: ...So? What do I care. I didn't ask for their help.

So we'll have Naruto, who on one hand feels like he's failed his friend and owes it to him to set things right...but on the other hand, he still wants to beat his face in for the horrible reprocussions his actions caused. Naruto gets "grown up", and you don't even have to kill Jiraiya to do it.

The other thing that's frustrating about that arc is that Sasuke tried to kill Naruto...he chidori'd him through the chest! And had it been anyone else except for Naruto, it probably would have been one dead ninja. And yet this simple notion is completely ignored as Naruto and Sakura stay on their "we must save Sasuke!" one-track minds.

Even if you really wanted to kill Jiraiya off, I feel it was completely bungled. Maybe I'm reading the manga wrong, but the way I felt it, J went to go get "more information" on Pain, knew that it was a risky mission and his chances for survival weren't high, ended up having to fight Pain and lost. The least he could do was scribble a note about Pain before he went out.

Imagine this is handled differently...J decides to directly confront Pain, and he KNOWS that he will die in the battle. However, he realizes that no one will defeat Pain unless someone learns his secret and passes it on to another shinobi who can finish the task. So J goes for the specific purpose of learning Pain's secret so that he can pass the info along to Naruto. He succeeds in his mission, and dies in the process. Its a simple perspective change, but it makes a world of difference. Imagine the impact of a scene where Naruto is called into Tsunade's office, and she tells him that J died so that Naruto could use this information to defeat Pain. It's potentially great stuff...but its not going to happen.

Kishi manages to create situations that could lead to greatness, but then he just fowls it up in the end and we're all left wondering what could have been.

I think this is what is going to happen in my opinion. J gave the info to the toad. He will take it to Tsunade and she will give the info to Naruto. Maybe not right away. She will probably tell him when she is about to die, or maybe she will tell Sakura

Don't be stupid. The only reason everyone loses to Sasuke is horrible writing. He's the only character to have learned any new Jutsu or progress storywise since/during the time skip.

Neji should be a master of one of the strongest forms of taijutsu which stops chakra, he can see completely around his body in a 360 sphere, see your chakra working, see incredibly long distances, and can use chakra like the force in Star Wars.

Neji hasn't even been given an ELEMENT yet and he STILL should be dominant. How does the Sharigan make it so Sasuke can scoot around in the blink of an eye?

Kishi came out in a sprint and everyone thought Naruto was dat shit. Then he just fell apart. Too many characters, too little development of them.

I honestly don't see how Naruto can call Sasuke a friend when he tried to kill him TWICE. The kid really needs to wake up and face reality. Your friends don't try to kill you. I think Naruto's time would be better spent training to improve himself to become Hokage someday or looking into his parentage, because you shouldn't try to save someone that doesn't want to be saved.

And Sasuke is gonna get lots of panel time in '08. What. A. Shock. Do manga writers have to write about certain characters based on the character's popularity in Japan? Because you all seem to miss one of the major themes in Naruto that NO ONE IS BEYOND REDEMPTION. That's what Naruto does and who he is. The moment he gives up on Sasuke he pretty much shits on his ninja way and everything that makes him Naruto. Your solution for Kishi to save the main character is to change the one thing that defines him. BRILLIANT! There's also been an underlying theme for a while now that the next gen kills the old that pretty much started with Orochi. Yeah, it's around there. Sasuke just fried Naruto with the puppet strings + Katon attack (the same move he used against Orochimaru in the chuunin exam forest) and now it's supposed to be in the first of a few Uchiha flashback episodes.

Looking back, Snakel Jackson's powers are neat. Those endless CG snakes, and each one having a sword in its mouth, that was too much. It reminded me of the NO U image macro of old.
