I hate how science is taught in school, and I just don't acknowledge social sciences as reputable. I think science is the closest thing to testing intelligence...even though it really doesn't have much to do with intelligence. It's atleast more rigorous than other subjects usually. The humanities are a joke to me, and social sciences I classify under humanities/liberal arts anyway. My main issue with science is how inapplicable it is to real life. It strikes me as utterly useless. You're basically limited to a small group of people that you can discuss things with, but you can rarely formulate anything on your own or have any real opinions on anything--you're basically just using data and hoping it's reputable. You're usually using someone else's theories. You can't really make science up. I need something more than that. So I figure law should be a good fit, it retains some of what I liked about science (consistency to a degree, a system) but removes a lot of the required memorization and gives me some freedom to think on my own. Of course, that's a result of its generality and the fact that it can never be a closed concrete system, with definite answers.

I wouldn't call it a science HS. It was more a writing/overall education school. It forced writing at a pretty high level though I guess, but pretty much everything was expected to be high level in that school.

These are the kind of things to be expected in the first year of a console release. People should know by now. I wait at least an extra year or 2 before I buy a new console. Especially after what was happening with the first PS2 launch. I see no need to have the newest system when the older models still have plenty of life in them. Witnesses for McDonald’s testified that consumers were not aware of the extent of danger from coffee spills served at the company’s required temperature. McDonald’s admitted it did not warn customers and could offer no explanation as to why it did not.

As a result of her injuries, Ms. Liebeck spent eight days in a hospital. In that time she underwent expensive treatments for third-degree burns including debridement (removal of dead tissue) and skin grafting. The burns left her scarred and disabled for more than two years.[8]Before a suit was ever filed, Liebeck informed McDonald’s about her injuries and asked for compensation for her medical bills, which totaled almost $11,000.

McDonald’s countered with a ludicrously low $800 offer.
McDonald’s had several other chances to settle the case before trial: At one point, Liebeck’s attorney offered to settle for $300,000. In addition, days before the trial, the judge ordered both sides into a mediated settlement conference where the mediator, a retired judge, recommended that McDonald’s settle for $225,000. McDonald’s refused all attempts to settle the case.


The Findings

The jury found that Ms. Liebeck suffered $200,000 in compensatory damages for her medical costs and disability. The award was reduced to $160,000 since the jury determined that 20 percent of the fault for the injury belonged with Ms. Liebeck for spilling the coffee.

Based on its finding that McDonald’s had engaged in willful, reckless, malicious or wanton conduct, the jury then awarded $2.7 million in punitive damages; essential to the size of the award was the fact that at the time McDonald’s made $1.35 million in coffee sales daily.

Since the purposes of awarding punitive damages are to punish the person or company doing the wrongful act and to discourage him and others from similar conduct in the future, the degree of punishment or deterrence resulting from a judgment is in proportion to the wealth of the guilty person.

Punitive damages are supposed to be large enough to send a message to the wrongdoer; limited punitive awards when applied to wealthy corporations, means the signal they are designed to send will not be heard. The trial court refused to grant McDonald’s a retrial, finding that its behavior was “callous.” The judge, however, announced in open court a few days after the trial that he would reduce the punitive damages award to $480,000. Both sides appealed the decision.

Before the appeals could be heard the parties reached an out-of-court agreement for an undisclosed amount of money. As part of this settlement, McDonald’s demanded that no one could release the details of the case.

Based on the facts, Corporate America’s and much of the media’s trivial portrayal of the case is deceptive and disgraceful. They have painted a misleading picture of a “legal horror story” when in fact, the case demonstrates a legal system that punishes corporations for misconduct and protects consumers who may be victims of their wrongdoing.

Note: The nature of the private settlement and lack of public court documents resulted in the use of primarily newspaper sources.

Their portable systems are pretty rock solid, however... i think u just got bad luck cause Ive had my snes since i was 13 and im 23 now. My friend had his game cube ever since it 1st came out and still no probs. 8bit nes I had was a nintendo top loader and the games worked fine. The 360 HD IS 20 gb.

However, 7 of those gigabytes are used for the original Xbox emulation; to properly emulate the console, it needs to recreate the full Xbox setup, and the original Xbox had a 8gig HDD. They probably don't need to emulate the first GB, which was the dashboard partition on the Xbox.

That's all there is to it.

sure it's not something that you wouldn't do while playing, but it's not unlikely for someone else to come and move the system a bit, especially while it's standing. it happened to my friend twice, first time his bro came in and was checking the system out while he was playing pdz, tilted it just a bit and the disk was destroyed. second time the little kids in the house moved the system(slightly) and BAM, pgr disk was gone. luckily the disks were replaced without hassle at the store where they also got a lot of returns for the same thing..

for this reason it's probably safe to just play the system sitting horizontally if you have a touchy lot with you. hopefully later drives in the system correct this!

It's easy to correct. The guys at Llama fixed it by putting a little bit of padding inside the xbox 360. Probably cost them .10 worth of padding. The fact is Microsoft could have done this themselves but decided not to and instead added a warning in the instruction manual. They don't care if you destroy your $60 games.

i think it was done like that on purpose, since iv come to realise the multiplayer is meant to have stealth elements to it not just running around blasting.

shenmue 2, sfac, and a grip of other games are still missing(for now)! still, backwards compatibility is nice for supported games since the resolution is upscaled and anti aliasing applied. i've tried crimson skies and it looked pretty good.
i hope the ps3 also enhances ps2 games in the same way.

yeah xblive arcade is pretty cool :wgrin: you connect to live marketplace, then go to download games(not called this exactly..forgot), then xblive arcade, then hit by category(action, puzzle, old coin op, etc), and pick the game you want to buy or try.

each live arcade download so far has been about ~40mb, and yeah you just download to hd, no physical copy. what's really nice is that you can demo any live arcade game before buying, also price isn't too bad(geometry wars is 5$, coin op too, but others are like $10-$15).

what can potentially suck though is if your hd gets full of stuff, then you'll have to buy a new one and lug the old one with old stuff around , too. 20gb isn't much..demos of retail games take a chunk, too.

Game published by MS are sold for 49.99 while other games are 59.99. The reason for this is because the cost of development has gone up for games.

I went to the local Best Buy at around 6 a.m. I was 28 in line, and they only got 24.

I think Microsoft rushed the system out, supply wise. I mean I remember every other recent launch having more than 300,000 units (PS2 and Dreamcast). I had no problem picking up an Xbox and Gamecube after launch.

Now, as most people know in the gaming world, street fighter is a popular game. In fact, it has been around for years, many people have played in tournaments and we have had winners....where is all this leading too??

Well, I have to admit, I liked street fighter when it was in the arcades and everything, but I didnt get really into it until my college days. My room mates and I played for hours, going back and forth and putting money down. Shit, in fact we had on our whiteboard the win/loss between all of us. We even betted chrous around the apartment! Then, I met Koop (Hateful Smurf). Koop, by far was the best person i've seen play Street Fighter. In fact now, I watch him very closely and ask every random ass question about street fighter. So, there I was, playing in the arcade on saturday at D&B, a group of us playing street fighter on the arcade machine. Koop was tellin' me some tricks of the trade with Ryu to make me a better player online.

So, tonight I am sitting down, playing some SF2 on 360 online. I've been equal with my wins and losses, but tonight we especially funny.

Unreal and I were sitting there, playing 360. Everything was going smooth and no problems. I start a match, kat named Duke Nukem88 comes in. Ok, cool. I pick Ryu and he waits then picks e.honda. I was like "Unreal, watch, he is going to do the HHS and I will null that shit".

Can anyone here tell me some good shit about FF XI for the 360. I got it today as a b-day gift, along with Dead Rising. Before I open FF XI....I'm having a hard time deciding if I should try to get into it or exchange it. I've read reviews and watched plenty of vids. I like the looks of the game. I have no problem with the graphics not being comparible to next-gen 360 games. As far as the reviews go, all I'm seeing are mediocre reviews which seem to give the game a fair rating simply because the 360 version doesn't bring anything new to the table. Which I dont really care about because I've never played XI at all. I also hear alot about it being like extremely difficult to get into on the 360.

So my main concerns are:

Is it just getting a fair rating simply because there's nothing new on the 360 version, or is there more to it than that?

Is it really that hard to get into (for a fairly hardcore rpg / FF player)?

Is it rewarding enough for all the time you have to put into it?

From what friends told me who are pretty decent gamers in general:

1. I think the learning curve and mediocre looks for the graphics whores are doing it. Not sure about new content though.

2. Steep learning curve from what they told me, difficult for a seasoned RPGer, very difficult for a noob.

3. It's rewarding but you have to put a fair amount of time into it, not as much as WoW though. Also missions can take a long time and finding a group seems to be a real problem when first starting. They also said combat is dull as fuck in the beginning especially when fighting the same groups over and over.

Started Dead Rising today...didn't play too much, got a quick taste of the action. Controls were a little awkward to me, meaning the way you pick up/use/target/etc. with weapons. Too early to tell if its good or not, one thing I don't like so far are the "Now Loading" screens inbetween every cut scene. :bluu:

Ok, played a bit more, definitely gets better once you find the lawn mower.....also the hardware store was fun, complete with chainsaws, sledge hammers, and giant hedge clippers. I think I'm starting to get the feel for this game and I'm not expecting much more than meaningless violence. Aside from the zombie killing there are such random acts, like escape convicts taking a baseball bat to an old guys head. My only real complaint so far are the damn loading screens. Its like you go rampaging through an infested area, "Loading"....meet up with someone 5 seconds later..."Loading".....taking the momentum away for me.

I found a different one though by Linksys that is said to work well. I ordered it, it was like $30 with shipping (or $25 for cheaper shipping). Seems like it might take a little while to setup but it'll work fine afterwords, according to some customer reviews I heard. I'll let you know.

It's definatly not for everyone. The game is really strict. It follows a very precise time schedule. If you fail to show up to an important mission on time, then you fail and have to start back where you last saved. This is especially infuriating if you did a side mission before said mission. If you decide to do a side mission before the main one, you better make sure you have plenty of time to do it in.

The game has great action and has a great sense of humor. Tons of replay value as well (6 different endings). Also, you are pretty much guranteed to see stuff you missed on the first time through. I really enjoy the game. I beat the main game already (72 Hour Mode) and i'm trying to finish the incredibly hard Overtime mode (Epilouge to 72 Hour Mode). In addition to those modes, you also get a Survival mode. I don't regret my purchase and i'm going to play it for sometime.

I'd say it took me about 8 hours to complete (I was taking my time). I was playing this game most of the yesterday and today. It's short because it's purpose is to be replayed. Also, you get some clothing and weapons for beating the game.

Spent a little more time with this today....gotta admit the novelty is wearing off now. Its definitely fun to go running through the mall finding new shit to use, but the main story and especially the side scoops you can do are not very fun. The map is kinda sloppy when trying to locate a specific store, and some of them you have a very limited amount of time to get there. Also, maybe its just cause I'm early in the game, but I have only one save point. This really sucks when you are on the other side of the map and need to go all the way back just to save, and even worse when a side mission pops up in the middle of your journey back to save. Spent a little more time with this today....gotta admit the novelty is wearing off now. Its definitely fun to go running through the mall finding new shit to use, but the main story and especially the side scoops you can do are not very fun. The map is kinda sloppy when trying to locate a specific store, and some of them you have a very limited amount of time to get there. Also, maybe its just cause I'm early in the game, but I have only one save point. This really sucks when you are on the other side of the map and need to go all the way back just to save, and even worse when a side mission pops up in the middle of your journey back to save. i know before the first boss there's at least 3 of them

after the first boss there's one in the fitness shop

I think I heard one save per device (i'm guessing you could put one on the HDD and one on your mem. card)

I've heard that there's only one save slot on this game. Does that mean that if my brother wants to play, he has to use my save file? Or is it something like one save per profile name?

i don't have the game, but this same question was asked in the gamespot boards, and the guy who reviewed it verified that you can have one save per profile name....

Well I'm willing to forive it a little due to it being a new series, and a failry new next-gen game. As a series I'd say it definitely has potential, they just gotta tweak a few things IMO to make it more enjoyable.

LOL, I was doing that shit (changing his outfit) in the demo, he reacts differently to everything.

felt so repetitive, got boring real quick. And the camera angles
