Has anyone else seen " Comrades, Almost a Love Story " or " Sweet as Honey " as I think it's called in some places.
Chinese film, really really good. I have not been able to find a place to buy that shit online or torrent it or anything. If you like romance, definitely check it out.

i'm so down for the movie, not down for the violence. i never was a pussy to films until last house...dunno what it was about that movie, but it changed how i viewed horror films. it was like having a bad experience, after it, i stopped watching violent films for a while. i know for some of you, last house is a disney special, but i remember it effected me even a year later when i watched audition...I hated Last House. It wasn't the violence, so much as the fact that the violence was pretty gratuitous. The movie was so generally poor that it didn't justify the violent scenes, which were imaginative enough that it might qualify as the first torture porn.

oh yeah, I noticed that Criterion has released a new edition of SALO on dvd.
Back when they first started doing dvds, Salo was one of the first ones (spine # in the top ten) and was also one of the first to go out of print and could be found on ebay for hundreds of dollars for years afterwords.

haha i think we just watch good cable tv shows (madmen, californication, weeds, i love most stuff on FX esp the shield/rescue me) and the office and how i met your mother
though i really like the terminator sarah connor chronicles even though its super cheesy. just went through the bluray in one night, couldn't stop watching. thats my guilty pleasure TV show that has horrible writing and acting but you can't stop watching since jericho got canceled.
oh yea sucks waiting 1 year for weeds s4 on dvd, it looks like the last two episodes are going to be epic

My criteria are basically these: can I live with just renting this on the infrequent occasion that I'd want to watch it, or must I absolutely have it? Is this a title that I'd want to watch strongly enough that I need to have it on hand? Is this title of high significance to my life?
If I had to pick any one title to save if my collection were going up in a blazing inferno, I think I'd pick Taxi Driver. That's with the caveat that you might get a different answer out of me if I make a similar post six months down the road.

yeah, i try to turn on everyone i can to the show, but they have to be people who can get into comedies that take 2-3 watchings to fully get. when i started watching the show, i would miss episodes here and there and never get why it was so funny. then when s1 came out on dvd, i really got into it...by the end of season 2, i was a full blown addict. i can say without flinching that it is the best sitcom ever put on television.

mine would be: Die Hard 1, Excalibur, RoboCop, The Fly, Conan the Barbarian, Amadeus, the Indiana Jones trilogy, Monty Python, one of the Bond collections, some Bertollucci stuff, Blade Runner Final Cut, and some samurai and kung fu movies. I could never really get into any of the Die Hards after the original. Like they were good action flicks and had their moments but the series lost something without Alan Rickman.

thought i would bring to your attention a few movies that are playing in theaters now that you should check out:
Bottle Shock - Best reason to see this is for Alan Rickman who plays an english wine connoseur who wishes he were French and goes to California to get some napa valley wine for an international taste test. based on a true story. Also stars Chris Pine who will be playing Kirk in the new star trek. It's like Sideways but the opposite in tone.
Baghead - One of my favorite movies of the year. Is it a comedy? Is it a horror movie? Go see for yourself and find out.
What We Do Is Secret - biopic of Darby Crash, frontman for LA punk band The Germs. Not the greatest movie but fun nontheless.
Red - Brian Cox stars in this movie that is like Death Wish except instead of his wife getting murdered it's his dog. Very quality movie. Opens on Friday.

i've been betting sports for about 6 years now "professionally", so figured i'd move to vegas where i could get more volume down on games since i wasn't able to get down as much money as i wanted on the internet. i couldn't move bc i owned al ot of businesses in NJ, but someone came through and said he'd buy them all for more than i valued them at. so i sold them a couple weeks ago, paid off any debts i had on them and banked the rest.
plus in NJ my 600k house got me .5 of an acre and i had 25k in property tax/year, here with all the foreclosures i got a huge house with a pool/jacuzzi in a gated community for less than that bc the bank foreclosed on the property and the property tax is really small

i had the same problem i had with planet terror is that it tried so hard to be a homeage to this type of films but it just wasn't working. it didn't feel natural

i got dark city, but haven't gotten a chance to watch it yet. really want to but for some reason i never put it in.
of the four crappy comedies if you had to go to one i'd say the house bunny. it's alright, couple of jokes, lot of hot women, but no one gets naked which is a tease. anna faris needs to get naked ASAP before she goes jennifer love hewitt on us
college is a big rip off of any teen movie in the last couple of years except they just curse more and show gross stuff like shit in a toilet or shots off of hairy guys. sucks.
disaster movie. didn't laugh once, theater was cracking up though, don't understand it.
the rocker. i always though rainn wilson is good in short doses and as a side kick (kind of like how he's michaels sidekick on the office), this movie kind of lends evidence to that. his characters get old quick and turns into annoying. will arnett was the funniest in this movie but he's only on screen for a couple of minutes. more movies need will arnett.
prolly rank them house bunny > rocker > college > disaster movie
angryliberal

so, while my girl was out with her friend yesterday, i watched dark city and hellraiser 2. dark city was amazing, i really want to watch it again. hellraiser, not so much. i had the same problem with hellbound as i did with the first hellraiser - it didn't seem to be properly focussed or paced. i can ignore the 80's effects, but something about the way the story plays out just seemed less than spectacular. also, the story seems rather unfocussed at points...
edit: hellraiser is one of those stories i always felt had a really good idea that never got done properly.
Dirt Mc Girt
08-31-2008, 06:16 AM

yea there was a couple theaters by my house that always got movies like that. i think vicky christina got a semi wide release, ~700 theaters
there was one theater too that only played movies that appeal to older women. when batman was hot they didn't have it, instead they had mama mia on three screens. weird shit
one highlight of the weekend is disaster movie is going to gross under 10 million, maybe that will stop them. and college is going to gross under 4
so, while my girl was out with her friend yesterday, i watched dark city and hellraiser 2. dark city was amazing, i really want to watch it again.

I really want to see Martyrs, don't know how long it will be until I get to see it out here. I watched Last House on the Left a few days ago, never seen it before. I can see why the movie was crazy for its time, still gave me some chills. Just got done watching Inside, that movie just drained me. Once it started it didn't let up, at all. It was pretty fucking intense, I bit off most of my nails.
Any other good recommendations of similar movies to tide me over?

Viggo might get an Oscar this year. He should have won for Eastern Promises as Day Lewis sometimes went way over the top in There Will Be Blood. Lots of deserving people might get nominated this year.
- Best Actor could be Frank Langella (aka the 3rd best Dracula of all time) or Viggo.
- Best Supporting Actor will go to Ledger but Downey Jr or Franco could get nominated which would be awesome.

Variety.com just posted a review of the new Arronofsky movie, THE WRESTLER with Mickey Rourke playing a washed up pro-wrestler. This was the best script I read last year and I have had high hopes for it. Looks like he delivers
The Wrestler
Talk about comebacks. After many years in the wilderness and being considered MIA professionally, Mickey Rourke, just like the washed-up character he plays, attempts a return to the big show in "The Wrestler." Not only does he pull it off, but Rourke creates a galvanizing, humorous, deeply moving portrait that instantly takes its place among the great, iconic screen performances. An elemental story simply and brilliantly told, Darren Aronofsky's fourth feature is a winner from every possible angle, although it will require deft handling by a smart distributor to overcome public preconceptions about Rourke, the subject matter and the nature of the film.
Co-produced by Wild Bunch in France, where Rourke has retained his most loyal following through thick and thin, this is nonetheless an American picture through and through, beginning with the way it strongly evokes the gritty working-class atmosphere of numerous '70s dramas. Spare but vital, and with the increasingly arty mannerisms of Aronofsky's previous work completely stripped away, the film has the clarity and simplicity of a great Hemingway short story -- there's nothing extraneous, the characters must face up to their limited options in life, and the dialogue in Robert Siegel's superior script is inflected with the poetry of the everyday.
All the same, for the first few minutes one could be excused for imagining the film was directed by Belgium's Dardenne brothers, as ace lenser Maryse Alberti's camera relentlessly follows around aging wrestler Randy "the Ram"
Robinson (Rourke) from the back, concentrating on his long, dyed-blond hair and hulking body before fully revealing his mottled, puffy face. This guy is 20 years past his prime, but he's still in pretty good shape and aims to get back on top on the pro wrestling circuit.
Ram seems to have always been a big fan favorite -- he is one of their own, a fearless bruiser the white working stiffs can root for against the assorted freaks, ethnic interlopers and outright villains in this macho cartoon universe. A beguiling early scene that firmly sets the movie on its tracks shows an event's muscled participants, all warmly easygoing and chummy with one another, pairing up and discussing what moves they'll make in their matches. A similar later scene has one of the wrestlers offering Ram his choices from a laundry list of dubious-sounding pharmaceuticals.
Apart from the momentary camaraderie of his ringmates, however, Ram is alone in life. At the outset, he's also penniless, locked out of his dismal trailer home until he can pay up. He works occasionally, lugging cartons at a big-box store, and his tough-guy posture is adored by small kids, but he's got no friends and nothing to show for his strenuous efforts.
From time to time, he has a drink at a gentlemen's club, where he visits aging stripper Cassidy (Marisa Tomei), whose days of using her body for her livelihood are similarly numbered. After getting a load of some of Ram's battle scars, Cassidy, whose real name is Pam, tells him he ought to see "The Passion of the Christ." "They threw everything at him," she says, to which Ram guesses Jesus must have been a "tough dude." Ram must confront his mortality after the film's second wrestling match, a bout so gruesome and barbarous it will force some people to look away.
Assessing his options while recovering, Ram decides to gently step up his relationship with Pam, as well as to try to reconnect with his daughter, Stephanie (Evan Rachel Wood), whom he hasn't seen in years. Both women have good reasons not to allow such a damaged man into their intimate lives, but even their most tentative signals of openness give Ram reason to hope for a new chapter in his life. His encounters with them are sensitively written and acted with impressive insight and delicacy, and Ram has one monologue in which he lays his feelings bare to Stephanie at a deserted old Jersey boardwalk -- "I deserve to be alone," he admits -- that is so great, one wishes it were longer.
After a stint at a deli counter that is the source of more good character humor, Ram decides to unretire and fight in a 20th-anniversary rematch of one of his most legendary bouts, "Ram vs. Ayatollah." Despite the hoopla, the way it all plays out is as far from "Rocky Balboa" as one could get, resulting in a climax that is exhilarating, funny and moving.
Shot in rough-and-ready handheld style, pic atmospherically reeks of low-rent lodgings, clubs, American Legion halls, shops and makeshift dressing rooms on the Eastern seaboard in winter (it locationed in New Jersey and Philadelphia). Stylistically, it's agile, alert and most interested in what's going on in the characters' faces.
And that is a lot. Physically imposing at 57, with a face that bespeaks untold battering and alteration, Rourke is simply staggering as Ram. The camera is rarely off him, and one doesn't want it to be, so entirely does he express the full life of this man with his every word and gesture. Ram's life has been dominated by pain in all its forms, but he's also devoted it to the one thing he loves and excels at, so he asks for no sympathy; he may have regrets, but no complaints.
As vibrant -- and as naked -- as she was in last year's "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead," Tomei is in top, emotionally forthright form as she charts a life passage similar to Ram's, if much less extreme. Once her character stops stonewalling her father and hears him out, Wood provides a fine foil for Rourke in their turbulent scenes together. The many supporting thesps, especially the wrestling world habitues, are richly amusing and salt-of-the-earth.

Two films to talk about that falls show of awesomeness:
Hamlet 2
Funny film if it wasn't for the comedy snob/oddball of my friend weened on the teet of Christopher Guest movies. It's not the most hilarious film, but who am I to fucking think that since I've voiced my opinion that I laughed more in Get Smart than Tropic Thunder. However with Catherine Keener, it really made me think of this film as being the secret evil bastard sequel mirrorverse version of 40-Year Old Virgin.
The humour you really have to bear through a few things to get some of it. There are some dated references, so oh so expected plot twists and plot points but it's like one of those stories that is just like every other story that you hear about your friend being drunk; but there's just a small little twist that makes it above average but NOT great.
Since it is from the co-writer of South Park the movie and Team America, it's basically a wonderful cumilation of their musical acts in live action. Rock Me Sexy Jesus is catchy of course,
Rape me in the Face is totally reminscent of Everyone has AIDS from Team America
And while it does try it's best to offend, it's more fun that parody. I'd say it's a great film to see at theatres just because it makes the musical numbers better and seem more live, but a solid renter if you run out of options.
SukiYaki Western Django
This film is basically the ultimate experiment in theoretical filmmaking. Japanese actors phonetically reading english lines sound awesome, cowboys in a Japanese setting sounds fucking awesome, Tarintino being directed by Takeshi Miike sounds awesome (depending on how much you like the former or the latter) but it's really a film that fall short of being 100% grade A awesome.
If there was anything to watch this film for, it's the aesthetics and secondly it's wackiness. It's probably the most solid portrayal of a real life anime which seemed totally unintentional but resulted in some pretty awesome fucking scenes. Basically said, this film gives a bit of hope in a Cowboy Bebop film being totally possible at least visually and there is one scene which is totally lifted out of a particularly memorable Bebop moment.
Half of it's charm and detriment is the fact that the phonetically spoken English basically makes a dub sound authentically Japanese in terms of rhythm of speaking. It translates well but had the dialogue been spoken by an English Speaker, it would be the cheesiest shit you'd ever see. A semi-great film to see if only once but by no means the most excellent film that it could theoretically could have been.

while equilibrium is full of horrible plot holes and inconsistancies, i enjoyed it much more than ultraviolet. though a bit misdirected itself, it felt more concise than ultraviolet. ultraviolet just never knew where it was going, like they had ideas for special effects scenes and tried to string them together into a muddled piece.

There are three kinds of movies with Milla Jovovich.
1. Hackneyed, slapped-together, horribly done pieces of shit, the focus of which is mostly to show that Milla Jovovich is a talentless whore who should be in porn as opposed to real movies.

I think 2008, so far, is one of the best years in movies in a looooong time, and I usually diss a lot of movies that come out. I agree that there were not a LOT of good movies, but I thought the movies that were good were really good. Plus, Oscar season is starting so a lot of Oscar contenders are coming up within the next month or two.
As for Burn After Reading, I think it's one of the best films this year. I may be biased because I just really like Coen Bros. films. They're artsy, yet simple. The way they deliver comedy is so unique. I wasn't crazy about some of the acting, but the plot was perfect and delivered perfectly.

Interesting review, but I see the movie in an completely different light. Here's my synopsis...
While it is considered a "comedy", the main enjoyment movie isn't to laugh. You'll probably laugh harder and more often in a pure comedy, like Tropic Thunder. I don't compare this movie to The Big Lebowski; I think it has more similarities to last year's big Coen film, No Country for Old Men.
A common theme in Coen movies is their side of the whole philosophical debate of free will versus predestiny. The Coens side with the notion of predestiny over free will, in which people don't truly have a choice over what they do and what becomes of them. They feel that, like everything else in existence (living or non-living), a peoples' actions is not a series of choices, but simply a series of chain reactions that we are powerless over. We are preprogrammed robots and we are simply governed by our motivations. Our actions aren't decided by a "soul" that makes us different than other creatures. Our every action is simply a domino in a never-ending chain of dominoes: what happens only happens because of what happens before it, and governs what happens after it.
This is the theme in No Country, and this is the theme with Burn After Reading. If you've seen No Country before, every character in Burn After Reading is basically Llewellyn Moss, someone who's plagued by his human motivations and doomed to their destiny because of them. However, in this movie, every main character is motivated by something different and unique to them.
-Frances McDormand (Linda) is motivated by her vanity, and needs to get the money for her cosmetic surgury.
-Brad Pitt is motivated by the irresistible allure of fun and adventure, and his idiocy.
-Ted is motivated by his unrequited love for Linda.
-John Malkovich is motivated by anger and his incessant need to get revenge on everyone who has wronged him.
-His wife is motivated by greed. She wants to divorce him, but needs his financial information to ensure that she doesn't come away empty handed.
-George Clooney is motivated by lust and sexual adventure.
-The Russians think they're dealing with something strategically important and hope to gain leverage on the Americans.
-The Americans also think they're dealing with something important, and try to prevent the contents of the disc from compromising the CIA.
Of course, unbeknown to everyone involved, the contents of the disc is completely worthless and unimportant. However, all of the characters' destinies intertwine because of it, resulting in the ensuing in chaos and hilarity. The movie ends with the CIA officials reflecting on the a "clusterfuck" of bullshit that happened over a disc of worthless information, and struggle to find something to learn anything from it.
Going back to the theme of free will versus predestiny, the Coens are basically saying that, sometimes there is no rhyme or reason to what happens. We're just a bunch of dominoes waiting for nature to take its course. They convey this through a comedy that isn't really supposed to make you laugh (although several scenes do), but make you smile and shake your head at.

My favorite scene is the end by far. With cg angelina jolie in the water....love the music in that scene. Best scene in the film easily. Maybe 4/5 stars for that scene alone :smokin:
i just finished watching Felon. Stephen Dorff was great, Michael from LOST was great, and fat Val Kilmer is too strong. fans of 'Nadia' from 24 (Marisol Nichols); it's in your best interest to watch this.
everything here is true. I copped Felon just to see val on scene again, and he delivered, as well as the rest of the cast. This is a surprise hit.
Also makes me never want to become a co

yeah Felon was surprisingly good as long as you can get past the ridiculous setup. Kilmer was very subdued.
I was watching Harsh Times on showtime the other night. love that movie. People rag on it but Bale's performance is great and all of it just rings true. Plus some great LA scenery. Hilarious lines all throughout.
Watched this old movie called Equinox that is one of the inspirations for Evil Dead. Apparently there's even a criterion dvd of it. Pretty crappy overall but had some good stuff.
Got drunk and watched Martyrs again last night...keep finding new stuff. slept like a baby this time.
My dvr messed up so I only watched 60% of Shooter but that was enough.
Would be much more inclined to go see Lakeview Terrace if it was R
Anyone watch that Echo Lake trailer I posted?

It looks pretty damn interesting. It was already a must see for Charlie Kaufman's directorial debut and all the good people in it, at least for me.
wow i cant believe they were able to cut a trailer for this movie, its a giant fucking mess

another good Mad Men. Mrs. Draper is fuckin Don's shit up. Sig I hope you stocked up on Utz before moving to Vegas
the only thing is, in 1960, i don't think you want to be a woman getting divorced, especially from a man like don draper...i missed the first five minutes of the episode this week, but once again, i was overly impressed by it.
caught no country again this morning while waiting to check out from our resort in the dominican. i really love that movie, chigurgh has to be one of my fave movie antagonists ever...

They just had a really good review for that on aintitcool.com. Sounds interesting, I'll check the trailer when I get home, no youtube allowed at work.
