watched 28 weeks later...not bad for an exploitation flick, but kinda weird coming from a studio (even a mini) I guess it's the european sensibilities. Probably would have liked more in the theater. Sig, have you seen stallone's softcore porn movie the italian stallion? It just got a new dvd release
finally got around to watching my Monster Squad dvd last night. Movie might be more hilarious now than it used to be. A lot of the language is sooo un-pc. New favorite part is at the end when the vortex is summoned and all of a sudden van helsing grabs dracula and gives the main kid the thumbs up with this huge shit eating grin on his face. I know the girl in the movie IRL...she is the same age as me

The King of Kong was probably one of the best documentaries I've ever seen. Many of the other "film" people agreed as well.
i saw michael clayton the movie with clooney...
it was pretty good...clooney did a good job (his character was tight too) as did most of the people in the movie...

haha stallone and porn. i actually don't own any porn (unless you count 70s horror which most of it is) at all, but i might check that out just to laugh.
i actually got the film reels for really cheap. this old movie store by my house was going out of business, this guy told me he was like 200k in debt from his business so he was even liquidating all his personal movies.
i ended up buying like 20 film reels of horror movies off of him for $500
i was depressed yesterday so i went and some really crappy movies for too much money

the only one i'm really itnerested in is A Mighty Heart, rest blah. Alreayd seen Beerfest like 3x, same with Knocked up/40 YO Virgin

ha yea i imported wolf creek on DVD before it hit theaters here and a week later i took my girl at the time to see it
she didn't like it for some reason though
something about so sick, how could you like this, etc. etc.
i never seen troy at all because of bad word of mouth but i heard the directors cut is decent so i figured why not
evan almighty is horrible but i figured when girls come over something can pop in for them since the movies i tend to buy don't appeal to the masses
i think adapting a phillip dick novel to screen is exactly like stephen kings
a couple great ones, rest are mediocre at best
i thought wolf creek was pretty good but none of my friends, 6 of them who saw it with me, liked it...
troy was pretty tight, i really liked it, not sure why all the hate or who told you it was bad...

Troy was good compared to Alexander. The worst movie I have ever seen in theaters was The Fountain. I thought it was going to be about Wolverine killing Mayans in order to find the Fountain of Youth and live for a thousand years having NC-17 level sex scenes with Rachel Weisz. My expectations could not have been farther from the truth.

I have no idea where you got those expectations for the Fountain from.
I mean, going by track record, nothing like that's going to happen with the director (dude who I believe directod Requiem for a Dream, though his name escapes me at the moment).

No, I wanted to give it an honest shot. I was a fan of the screenwriter James Gunn from his Troma days and at that time before the whole zombie saturation I figured, It has zombies, it's at least got to be kind of good, right? Little did I know...

so if you're going to take out the social commentary why even set it in the mall

I saw Lust, Caution yesterday. I thought it was a good movie. Great cinematography - it did remind me of those old-school film noirs, which I think they were aiming for. It's a good movie to watch if you don't mind a slow burn. The friend I watched it with thought it was pretty slow, but I just thought it was deliberate. I could see how someone could lose interest throughout the course of the movie, though.
It had really explicit sex, too. I was pretty surprised. You could see the dude's balls! And they did so many different positions. Wow.

any other stand alone player 7 free (2 you want <34.99, 5 from toshiba)
xbox 360 hd-dvd drive = free heroes season 1 on HD DVD + 5 movies from toshiba
good deals and good way to get into HD DVD for cheap
i picked up The Reaping on HD DVD, waiting for it to come. Don't really have high hopes for it, was delayed for over a year + panned by everyone, but i'll give it a try when ebay ships it and let you know
Man all the extras on the Planet Terror DVD were the same from Deathproof except for 10 Minute Film School and a segment about Rodriguez's son. Pretty cool to see how they did the machine gun leg tho.
They also didn't put in the sex scene (Guessing they didn't film it), but they did add a black guy with an uzi to their posse I don't remember seeing in theaters. The rest of the added material is just useless stuff as always, nothing that interesting.
Also in the 10 Min Film School Rodriguez mentioned they're working on full Grindhouse DVD, so thats cool

it is already getting epic reviews...the book was pretty tight so if all goes well i expect no less and just from what they have shown in the previews it follows the book very closely...
on another note, the peson who wrote no country cormac mccarthy, is getting another movie made based on his book called blood meridian...the movie is going to be called the same thing and it is directed by riddely scott...and this book is even more epic than no country, so it should be exciting to see how riddley scott pulls this one off...
but no joke blood meridian is the most rediculous american novel i have read...shit is brutal, if scott follows the book this shit is going to be like a grindhouse flick (gore and violence wise), cause its brutal and violent as fuck...

Some of the spotted errors in American Gangster.. I don't care about editing mistakes, or even the Wu tattoo, but there were so many screwed up facts and events (anachronisms) in the film.. on top of Frank Lucas' inaccurate portrayal.. I really don't know what value this movie had because they didn't recreate that time period at all.. not like you should accept period movies as accurate but this list puts things into perspective..
Goofs for
American Gangster (2007)
Revealing mistakes: Moses Jones (played by RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan) sports a prominent Wu-Tang Clan tattoo on his left upper arm, especially visible in the first briefing scene of the newly formed narcotics unit. Additionally, upon close examination, the tattoo features his name 'RZA' set inside the Wu-Tang Clan logo.
Anachronisms: Just after Frank hears the news of the imminent fall of Saigon on TV and goes to ring his contact, we see a modern car drive past the window.
Anachronisms: The subway train shown going into the Manhattan Valley tunnel was built in 1986.
Errors in geography: The scene where Richie and his partner find money in the trunk of a car has a caption that says "New Jersey". The view in the beginning of the scene is of the Williamsburg Bridge, which connects Williamsburg, Brooklyn, to the Lower East Side in Manhattan.
Anachronisms: In some scenes we can see Citicorp Center. This building was not present in the early 1970s.
Revealing mistakes: In some scenes when snow is falling, the broad-leaf trees in the background have green (summer) leaves.
Anachronisms: In the scene set in 1968 where Frank prepares to call his cousin in Bangkok for the first time, an Internet URL is clearly seen on a billboard across the street.
Anachronisms: Frank drives past a sign saying I-395, when in fact, the road in Washington, D.C. was not named so until the late seventies.
Anachronisms: The law books Richie Roberts is studying for class are festooned with 3M Post-itŪ notes: they weren't invented until 1977, and were available nationally in 1980.
Continuity: When detective Richie is chasing the guy in the apartment complex he pumps his shot gun and points it in the face of a woman. After realizing this mistake he resumes his pursuit and pumps the shotgun yet again in the face of the man on the ground without firing a round.
Errors in geography: A distant mountain range is visible in a location identified as Fort Bragg, NC; no such mountains exist around Pope Air Force Base which serves Ft. Bragg.
Anachronisms: On the payphone the label "A NYNEX Company" is visible; NYNEX didn't exist until after the AT&T breakup in 1984.
Anachronisms: When Javier jumps from the ambulance, a postal service truck with the current logo is visible; this logo wasn't used until the 1990s.
Anachronisms: Frank Lucas uses a small electronic adding machine with digital numbers. Those didn't come on the market till the mid 70's at the earliest.
Factual errors: When speaking with his nephew the baseball player, Frank confronts him because the nephew missed a meeting with the New York Yankees and Billy Martin. Billy Martin did not manage the Yankees until 1975. This conversation took place prior to then.
Errors in geography: When Richie and Javier go to search the car of the bookie in the early scenes, the bridge seen behind them is the Williamsburg bridge, revealing them clearly to be in Brooklyn, not New Jersey.
Continuity: In the movie they said Stevie is a southpaw, but you can see that when he throws the ball in the backyard of Frank's house, he is clearly right handed.
Anachronisms: Early in the film, about 1970, we see the Staten Island Ferry passing the Statue of Liberty holding a gilded torch. The statue's internally lit torch wasn't replaced with the gilded one until 1986.
Errors in geography: When Ritchie chases the car over the George Washington Bridge, the film claims that Ritchie is coming from New Jersey to Manhattan, where he doesn't have jurisdiction. In fact, he begins to tail the suspect on the Manhattan side of the George Washington Bridge going into New Jersey, then winds back up in New York.
Factual errors: There is a scene of Frank Lucas watching Nicky Barnes passing out copies of the NY Times magazine where he was the cover story. The issue with Barnes on the cover was not published until 1977, Lucas was arrested and convicted before 1977.
Factual errors: When Frank first calls his cousin in Bangkok, he gives the operator the country code for Thailand as 376. Later, as the war is ending, he gives the operator the country code as 367. (Thailand's actual calling code is 66).
Anachronisms: In one of the scenes at Fort Bragg/Pope AFB, you can clearly see a modern-day C-17 Globemaster III in the background. These planes weren't added to the Air Forces inventory until 1993.
Factual errors: In the movie, Frank Lucas was said to have been incarcerated from 1976 to 1991 continuously. In real life, Lucas was in fact paroled in 1981. He remained free for three years until he was arrested and convicted of parole violations and drug offenses in 1984 and was sent back to prison until he was released in 1991.
Continuity: In the first courtroom scene, when Richie is speaking with his attorney, the camera angle alternates between a wide shot of both and one of Richie from behind his attorney. In the wide shot, his arm is straight across the bench behind her, while in the shot from her back, his arm is hanging behind the bench. This alternation between shots occurs many times.
Continuity: In the scene where Frank Lucas confronts 'Tango' outside the shop, he pulls out a chrome .45 Colt automatic, then the weapon changes to a chrome Browning Hi-Power in the subsequent scene.
Anachronisms: Night time shots clearly show streets lit with high pressure sodium lamps that give a warm red/orange glow. These were not introduced until the mid 1980's.

American Gangster succeeds at being entertaining. It is not awards worthy but is certainly worth seeing and a great return to form for Ridley Scott after the fucking horrible A Good Year. Some period movies are not ment to be accurate but American Gangster is (I did not really notice anything while watching it though). Some examples:
- Excalibur is "mythically true" rather than historically true. The magical realist tone greatly enhances the film rather than detracting from it. Recently a bunch of semi-realistic King Arthur movies were made and they were all wastes of celluloid.
- All movies set in the middle ages with most people appearing to live past the age of 40 and are not covered in shit. Also, why do almost all infants survive in said films? The infant mortality rate then was very high.
- Dracula (1931) is set in Victorian England but almost all costumes, props, manner of speaking etc. are from the 1930s. The movie itself sucked but Bela Lugosi was great as Dracula though my favorite is Christopher Lee, followed by Lugosi, Gary Oldman, and Max Schreck if Nosferatu counts.
- Frankenstein and its sequel Bride of Frankenstein are set in 19th century Central Europe but also feature many elements from the 1930s. The film is much better than the extremely dated Dracula. They are still considered by far the greatest films based on the novel which critics say they even surpass.
- Titus features microphones, fascist imagery, and modern toys but is generally successful at keeping an absurdist, semi-Roman atmosphere.

you needed to figure out wtf was going on? i can explain if you were confused at any parts...i liked the movie, was basically like the book, probably one of the best adaptations from book to movie...
although just like the book i did not like the ending and thought it was inappropriate for the book because of how the first 3/4's of it played out...
in the movie at the end they also left out a lot of philosophy, like for example, when anton goes to talk to moss' wife, they cut out that conversation like 70% of it...and in that 70% you really get a feeling for why anton does what he does, his principles, his beliefs if you will...
the main difference from the movie to the book is in the movie they shifted the philosophical or just importance of the movie towards the middle, as opposed to the book where it was ALL towards the end...

There's also a Bourne Trilogy Boxset for $40 at Kmart if anyone is interested.
Anyway, my Top 10 are as follows:
1. The Bourne Ultimatum
2. Transformers
3. No Country for Old Men
4. Alpha Dog
5. Pan's Labyrinth
6. The Darjeeling Limited
7. Sicko
8. TMNT
9. Juno*
10. AVP2*
*The way things look in their respective trailers, they're at least good enough to crack the bottom half of My Top 10 List for 2007.

i don't think it matters
the movie is almost exactly the same thing as the book
they just moved one from the middle of the book to the end of the movie and cut the length of the scene which kinda fucked up alot of things IMO
cause in the scene they shortened you really got to understand the killer more
besides that its basically scene for scene the same thing as the book

I don't think it hurts. Outside of Chigurgh being condensed, it's a literal interpretation. So reading the novel isn't exactly a pre-requisite. But McCarthy is just an excellent writer.

watched a bunch of crap this weekend
reservoir dogs (blu, 15th anniversary) - first time seeing it, overhyped IMO. come to think of it pulp fiction and death proof are the only QT movies i like. Hated Jackie Brown, Kill Bill, and Four Rooms. Didn't bother to watch extras.
i know who killed me (on blu ray!!) - i actually rewatched this cause i saw it in theaters. still a huge clusterfuck of a movie. features are useless, tho the alternate ending really drove home what i thought was so obvious but my gf missed and everyone who i talked to who saw it, so maybe they shoulda left that in
invincible (blu) - kind of a cliche movie, but i thought it was pretty good. its amazing how much CGI they used during this movie. the making of documentary is one of the best i seen too
and i rewatched superbad on blu ray. the extra features are really good (pineapple express looks funny), but the movie didn't seem as funny as I remember it in theaters, but there's more than enough special features to make it worth it
was the general consensus on Hatchet that it sucked? I got a AMEX gift card that is expiring and you can't use it online, so thinking about going to BB tomorrow and picking it up

happy gilmore, click (even tho this really wasn't a comedy as i found out), the brothers solomon, lets go to prison, and jackass 2.5
brothers solomon was pretty funny, it hink will forte plays off arnett well, but dax shephard and him in lets goto prison just didn't work
jackass 2.5 SUCKS, i guess thats what happens when you make a movie of clips that weren't good enough to make the deleted or bonus scenes on the original jackass 2 dvd
click made me cry, makes me pretty homo if you ask me
i love universal special editions where all they have is deleted scenes and blooper reels (like gilmore on HD DVD)
and titty bar with buffet would be a genius idea, too bad you can't get a liquor license for under 250k in NJ
titty bar + buffet + open bar + $50 door cover = greatest idea ever

Saw 'I Am Legend' last night (still waiting for No Country for Old Men to get a UK release).
I'd probably give it about 4 out of 10. A bit too slow in the opening, CGI aint great. Best bit was when dude goes in after his dog, quite nightmarish stuff and I was really scared (I scare easy). But then as soon as you actually see the badguys, the fear factor is gone and you can relax a bit.
Some real non-sensical stuff in here too. For example, did the monsters set up that trap that snared Smith? Was the guy handling the dogs? If he was, why didnt he run out and finish the job when they failed?
Smith was ok, he's a charismatic guy but I wouldnt really say it was a one-man tourdeforce. When the dog died... was he taking a dump or what?
When the lady mentioned God I cringed. Script wasnt up to it, script was damn weak actually.
Uh, so not so good really... 28 days later was MUCh better.

Here are some reviews that weren't posted on AICN just in case anyone is interested. If anything these batch of films are to avoid with the exception of the last one.
NIGHT TRAIN
I would have to say that if there was a movie to show the negative
side of industrialization, it would be this film. Pitched as an uber
black comedy set in China, it hardly enters any sort of comedy aside
from awkward moments of the characters. It's unnerving, I wouldn't
say it's a thriller but really a depressing sort of film that shows
the almost pathetic lives of Wu Hongyan ( Liu Dan) and Li Jun (Qi
Dao).
Wu is an officer for the government and while she isn't performing
duties of being a bailiff or executing prisoners with a bullet to the
head, she goes out of her way through bus and train to perhaps find
love at a matchmaking service or singles dance. She doesn't love her
job, but she does it well and that's all she seems to exist to do. Li
is the husband of one of the death row prisoners that Wu executed
because she killed her other lover. Li floats through life in a
constant state of shock after finding out about the affair while he's
kicked out of the house by his brother-in-law and his son taken away
from him.
Basically you feel very little beyond pity for these two characters.
Wu is found dating people who are wrong for her and even allows
herself to be fooled into paying for the company of a guy hired by the
matchmaking agency to scam her for more money. It doesn't help that
she lacks a certain femininity that one of her stripper neighbours
has, however she isn't some ugly duckling who's going to be a swan at
the end. She is very plain. Her layered casual clothes runs
parallels with her masculating military uniform however it isn't a
tale of her being treated like a man wanted to be treated like a
woman, but more of wanting to have a emotional human connection with
someone. Sadly it ends up with crazy sex and slightly more rational
activities.
Li also has a similar mental block and run of misfortune with love
considering he lost his wife and his child. His overalls hides his
masculinity while his shock just adds a personality disorder. Li and
Wu eventually find each other, but they don't share anything sort of
emotional connection that each respective person yearns for since they
are both incapable of giving it.
The whole idea of them being so emotional stunted is pretty apparent.
They're lives aren't exactly wonderful and most noticeably the setting
of China's various villages and industrial areas kind of contribute to
how depressing their own lives are. The setting itself is sort of a
character as it's so dominating in most shots that you can understand
that Wu and Li are part of the landscape that's slowly falling apart.
Even with it's limited palette of greys, blues, dark greens, blacks
and very rare vibrant colours; most of the time the shots are composed
very beautifully, as if to show magnificence of the architecture, no
matter how run down it looks. It does lack a certain aesthetic
precision that Chan-Wook Park or Kar Wai Wong have, but unlike them,
the whole of the scenery seems to be more of a focus than the ability
to compose a perfect angle of the shot.
It's an alright film, not something you should run out to get. The
characters are interesting but lack depth however that seems to be the
point and with so little dialogue, you'll wonder where the heck is the
story.
THE BODYBUILDER AND I
The closest thing I could relate this documentary to is imagine
American Chopper with a ton of genuine quiet resentment, a sideshow
circus and the scariest age 50+ bodybuilders you'll ever see in your
life. Touted as "What if Werner Herzog directed Little Miss Sunshine"
I wouldn't say it's similar but it certainly does bring a heck of a
lot more awkward moments and the complete superficiality of it all
while still bringing you into believing this world of elderly
competition.
The director Bryan Friedman follows his estranged father Bill
Friedman's preparation in the months leading up to the 50+
international bodybuilder's competition. Suffering from his own
shortcomings to commitment and fear of following in his absent
father's footsteps Bryan tries to find out what went wrong, why it
stayed wrong for 26 years and what's causing this resentment to
continue existing between him and his father.
I knew I was in for some weirdness, I mean seeing an old man in such
great shape, he can snap me like a twig, you can hardly prepare for
that. Even if the picture in the guide shows him in a blue speedo and
all tanned up, it still surprises you. It's an interesting
documentary because even though it does have a story to tell, the goal
in the end suddenly changes. Bill is never fully antagonized by the
camera however you do get a certain vibe from Bill that he's a jerk.
He's one of those guys who has to have it his way or else he'll be
pissed off and having been one of the top lawyers it's no wonder he's
like that. We learn a bit of their family history, how Bryan's mom
divorced Bill and taken custody of them. How Bill quit the firm and
gotten into bodybuilding, nothing entirely in depth, but enough to set
the stage and know there's some deep resentment.
Maybe it's because the director is trying to reconnect with his father
somehow or perhaps he needs to be nice in order to find out his own
flaws; there really isn't a good guy vs. bad guy mentality in this
documentary. There's even one point in the film where they do have a
serious chat about their relationship in which his father handles him
like a lawyer and suddenly you feel like Bryan is the bad guy and Bill
is a victim. All the while logic is battling personal feelings as to
how much a total jerk this guy is and still is; even if he seems a bit
comical at times.
While this documentary is a journey of trying to mend strained
relationships and genuine emotions, it's offset by the sheer insanity
of the bodybuilding world. It's already crazy enough as it is, but to
include the elderly people, of which Bryan visits his father's closest
competitors, it just reaches all levels of awkward craziness. People
who are involved willingly and unwillingly with their partner's
activity and a routine done to the Superman Movie theme that has to be
seen in order to be believed. However I think it's because of the
humble beginnings of the people interviewed that we can probably
better understand the bodybuilding world than if the subjects were 20
years younger. While the fanaticism is certainly there, there's a
certain acceptance of their activity as a hobby when considering the
ages of these competitors. While that may be an unfair bias, it
certainly made me more understanding the lengths that people would go
for those perfect striations.
In the end it's a pretty good and funny film, you'll probably see it
on the documentary channel. There's nothing wrong with it and it
won't point out some scathing problem with the world, however I'm sure
any sort of strained relationship between family members will hit
close to home.
FLIGHT OF THE RED BALLOON
It was either this or Go Go Tales which at the time looked to be sold
out by the advance ticket line-up. So I went for the one that had two
theatres opened up for it. I'm quite amazed that this had an
additional theatre opened up for it to show it, both of them being
totally packed. A tribute film to the classic short The Red Balloon,
Hou Hsiao-hsien's film takes it to a new eerie level of Balloon
manipulation. While the film student and new nanny Song Fang actually
describes to Suzanne (Juliette Binoche) how she's shooting a short
film on the side of Suzanne's son, even describing the man in green
who would hold the balloon and then be digitally erased, you are still
amazed how they managed to make the balloon move so alive, it's nearly
impossible to make it look so naturally floating yet intentional in
it's movements.
The entire film isn't like that. While every so often we get glimpses
of it, the main story is about puppeteer Suzanne in midst of a tenant
dispute, arguing with her separated husband and Song Fang nannying the
cute Simon. While there are a LOT of long uninterrupted cuts, this
film is basically everyday life with no real point or conclusion to
the events within them. People talk, people get angry, issues are
unresolved, you see the balloon and there's a few laughs. I'm not
simplifying anything because that's how it actually is for 2 hours.
For 2 hours it is a stretch and even though it was nice to look at, I
wouldn't recommend it unless you absolutely have nothing else to see.
The acting isn't necessarily bad but it's because the characters
aren't all that compelling that makes you wonder if it is a bad
performance or having no script at all really just lead itself to be a
poor film.
The neat thing I got out of it was a interesting new perspective of
France by the cinematography. It's neat to see the cinematography of
filming in the cramp apartments and spaces of Taiwan being applied in
Paris which gives it a far less romanticized view that Western
filmmaking usually does but still beautiful to look at.
OUTSOURCED
Ending off my stint at the VIFF this year is the comedy Outsourced
about a sales rep Todd Anderson (Josh Hamilton) who sells tacky
American crap to Americans such as Bald Eagle Coffee Mugs and US Flag
Hats. While he's at the top of his game, he's suddenly informed that
US jobs are being outsourced to India. He could either quit his job
and face the unemployment line like his soon-to-be co-workers or he
could extend his career just a bit longer with the company by going
over to India and train his replacement.
It's a typical fish out of water tale with Todd adapting to a culture
and the culture having to adapt to Todd just a bit. It's not as funny
as some of the more laugh out loud comedies that we've see in the past
few years, however it does have the same sincerity that films like 40
Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up has. The low key star presence helps
immensely in making you believe these characters emotions and
motivations, with comedy being more about Todd's own culture shock to
India and his reactions which are never over the top but good.
It's a small little charmer that has some clever insights with the
culture of India and has something that both cultures could enjoy and
laugh about. It's coming out for release soon and even NBC picked it
up for a TV series slated for next year.

I'm struggling on my best of 2007 list. I can only count 8 movies that I saw in theaters this year that deserve to be on it.
I watched a lot of dvds over break: Silver Bullet still rocks and I had forgotten Locke from Lost was in it (i think i say that every time) as well as Big Ed from Twin Peaks (which I am also currently watching). Listened to the commentary for Exorcist: version you've never seen before. Friedkin can talk like a mf. I saw Goodfellas on DVD, rather than on Lifetime.........I thought it was really good as a whole. Some interesting things I found out about the making of the film:
The film was shot in 1989 in New York City.
Scorsese broke the film down into sequences and storyboarded everything because of the complicated style throughout. According to the filmmaker, he "wanted lots of movement and I wanted it to be throughout the whole picture, and I wanted the style to kind of break down by the end, so that by his [Henry] last day as a wiseguy, it's as if the whole picture would be out of control, give the impression he's just going to spin off the edge and fly out."
The long tracking shot through the Copacabana nightclub was shot eight times, a few times because Henny Youngman kept forgetting his lines.
The scene where Paulie slaps Henry as a warning not to be dealing behind the family's back was added by Paul Sorvino, hence Liotta's expression. The shocked look on his face is actually real; as he had not expected this, and Scorsese kept it in the final cut because he liked Liotta's reaction.
Most of the dialogue, especially Pesci's, was ad-libbed by the actors, with the urging of De Niro. The entire 'hoof' scene with Tommy's mother (Martin Scorsese's mother Catherine), after killing Billy Batts was completely improvised. According to Maxim magazine, Pesci wrote and directed the "You think I'm funny?" scene at Scorsese's request.
Scorsese wanted to depict the film's violence realistically, "cold, unfeeling and horrible. Almost incidental."
Cool points to Scorsese, De Niro and the crew for the ad-libbed parts...........the slap from Paulie to Henry always made me laugh.

Yeah Once is good stuff
3:10 to Yuma is great
I think Eastern Promises is slightly better than History of Violence. Viggo's performance is better, the story is much more grounded and believable and more grandoise, and I think the understatedness of it makes it more powerful.

The Tracey Fragments...
Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-TbdIKhvn4)
Apparently, this movie only got a Canadian (and I think European) release early last year. I read that an American company got the distribution rights so perhaps one of the small theaters in my area will get it. If not, I don't see a DVD release far behind.
Anybody managed to see this one yet?

Got around to renting a slew of DVDs this past weekend...
The Kingdom - Rather enjoyable fluff piece on "Good vs. Evil" and how FBI agents = Terminators. Mindless entertainment.
Sunshine - Exquisite. I really like Danny Boyle's work, and Sunshine captured everything a sci-fi space thriller should; similar to Alien in many respects. The ending was sorta "meh", but the other 80% of the movie had me wanting more every moment.
Shoot 'Em Up - Fun to watch once, probably couldn't stomach it for a second viewing. There's only so much enjoyment I can derive from one-liners and witty banter between Hero & Villian.
Resident Evil: Extinction - They need to end this series now. The ending was rather open ended, possibly leaving room for a sequel... ugh. No thanks.
Eastern Promises - Classic Cronenberg, although it felt about 20 minutes longer than it should have been. Viggo, sans Hidalgo, has never dissappointed me. Very tense. I liked it alot.

I watched Shoot 'Em Up last night. That movie got so ridiculous and cheesy but that made me love it even more. I watched it with others and we were having fun trying to guess what he would do next.
I also watched quite a bit of a movie called May on IFC. It's a horror movie about a weird woman with no social life who goes crazy after being rejected by some new friends. She has a doll collection and even makes some of her own. Her doll making skills come into play later for the horror aspect of the movie. Also, she takes to a creepy doll in a glass case.
Anna Faris was in it and looked real nice with dark hair. Plus, she played the role of a lesbian. :wgrin:

I saw May; dissappointed only because it was billed as something that it wasn't (expectations vs. reality = fail). Overall, the tone was rather uneven, and the character did a 180 degree flip-flop, which was a tough pill to swallow. Sorta "meh" for me. Scary to think there are actually people out there like this...

I watched Hairspray. Was lots of fun. I went in not knowing a thing about the movie (wasn't heavily promoted here, and girlfriend and I just knew it was a musical and we were in the mood for one so we watched it).
Imagine our shock when John Travolta came on. Wish there was more of Christopher Walken too. But overall, lots of fun. Would recommend.
Sweeney's coming out next week for us here (finally!) so I hope I get to see that too, as far as musicals go.
Also, I watched Once the other day, a music based...drama, I think (I'm not too good with genres if they're not obvious). A very heartwarming story and lots of good music. Everyone's speaks English with Irish accents though, so that's a bit hard to follow sometimes (I think it's Irish anyway, I heard the movie's from Ireland).

Yeaahhhhh. I talked about this a few weeks ago, but didn't get much response, other than PG saying it was good. I loved the movie, immediately bought the soundtrack the following day, too. We had to put the subtitles on because we couldn't understand the english in the movie, haha. Especially in the opening sequence. Great movie, though.

Well, I've only seen the Final Cut, and I think that is probably the most "definitive" version. I was reading through the differences, and it looks like the final cut is probably the closest to Scott's vision that we're going to get. The theatrical cuts had a different ending inserted by the studio and some narration that Scott didn't want in there. The Workprint is pretty raw, missing some stuff and not polished. The Director's cut is supposed to be closer to what Scott wanted, but the Final cut has more polish, reshot scenes, continuity and effects corrections, etc.
I think the Final Cut is probably the best one, but again, this is just from seeing the Final Cut and reading what's missing from the other cuts.

I'm speaking as somebody that's seen the US theatrical and DC of Blade Runner several times..
I like the narration but Harrison Ford puts no effort into it at all. Takes you right out of the movie, even though what he says helps you understand what's going on. If he got into character in the narration, it would've helped shape the movie's noir detective atmosphere..
I'd really like the whole boxset, but I'll either wait for a massive pricedrop (like what happened with the Matrix Ultimate Collection) or just watch the Final Cut..
ChairHome
01-16-2008, 08:12 AM
By whole boxset, do you mean the Ultimate Collector's edition? The 25th anniversary set that came out is pretty cheap if you don't go for the briefcase. I bought the HD-DVD set for about $30 if I remember, and it has all of the versions you're talking about in it.
As far as the narration goes, since I've never seen it with it in, I don't know what I'm missing. But the movie wasn't too hard to follow without it. There were a few moments where I had to think "what just happened, and what is going on?", but it wasn't too hard to figure out.

Little details like the language Edward James Olmos's character is is speaking at the noodle stand in the beginning.. it's a mix of Japanese, Spanish, German and other stuff.. Deckard mentions that in his narration. But it's nothing you need to know, especially if you're not interested in repeat viewings.

Saw The Machinist last night. I thought it was good, but not great. Christian Bale was so thin in the movie, it reminded me of me in high school =X. The special feature said he weighed 120lbs and wanted to go as low as 100lbs but there were health concerns, so he stayed at 120.
There's one thing that really bugged me about the movie.
Ivan...who the hell was he and why did he play such a big role. As far as I'm concerned, he was just some random guy Trevor went fishing with a year ago. I don't see how he had ties in any other way. At least be in the hit-and-run scene if you're gonna play that big of a role.
I'm probably missing something about Ivan's toe sewn unto his left hand. I suppose it's a reference to Miller but Miller lost his arm, not his toe.
Other than Ivan, the movie was good with a decent twist. Maria looks like a hispanic Heather Graham!

two things about watching blade runner for the first time now:
1. watch it again after a little time has passed - BR isn't really a typical sci-fi movie and avoids a lot of story beats that would normally occur. Multiple viewings lets you adjust and really see what the movie is getting at
2. the effect is going to be diminished regardless just because almost every sci fi film since BR has ripped at least something from from it, so the original doesn't seem so far out now

iirc he wasn't going to direct saw 4 at first, but agreed at the last minute, probably regretted it
most directors are idiots tho, they don't realize how lucky they got it
i wouldn't mind getting a million to direct the same movie over and over, TV directors direct the same show over and over and get paid nothing

i always interpreted the end as a religious vs science debate, not really a slasher thing
the whole ship believes in science, but as they get closer to completing the mission they start to question the science aspect and turn to religion. whenever there is a little doubt, people abandon science and turn to religion. if something is not completely explained by science currently, it must be the work of a god. the ships crew disregard the science and instead reach out for the hope that the other ship is fine. their choice to trust faith instead of the science caused a serious of disastrous events which almost destroyed civilization (since icarus 2 was the last chance to fix the sun)
Pinbacker (guy on the other ship) represents extremist religious view. People act like he's just some random slasher guy, but instead his character had a purpose and was central to the stories religion vs science debate.
it's not like in Alien when Ash is all of a sudden an android and tries to kill everyone or From Dusk Til Dawn when it just turns into a vampire movie (even tho I really enjoyed that)
i interpreted sunshine that as a society religion is ruining us and we need to focus more on the science, before our faith destroys us.
i'm not saying my interpretation is what the director intended, but i feel like if it's interpreted that way the last scene makes more sense
however, if you're just watching the movie as entertainment and not trying to understand the directors intent, then I can understand why the ending sucks - tho I'm not sure what would satisfy you as an ending. Maybe some big shootout between aliens and the icarus space ship? Then Capa at the last minute with his last dying breath hits a button and releases the nuke to the sun then blows up his ship taking the aliens out with him. I don't know.
the whole ship believes in science, but as they get closer to completing the mission they start to question the science aspect and turn to religion. whenever there is a little doubt, people abandon science and turn to religion. if something is not completely explained by science currently, it must be the work of a god. the ships crew disregard the science and instead reach out for the hope that the other ship is fine. their choice to trust faith instead of the science caused a serious of disastrous events which almost destroyed civilization (since icarus 2 was the last chance to fix the sun)
well actually the reason they went to the other ship was IMO an act of science...they analyzed their options and what would the best option possible, whether they made the right decision or not, did not matter, it was done in the name of science to try to add an extra chance to save humanity...
however, i can see what you are saying the religious vs. science aspect of the movie...but if you are going to go that route to me it seems more like ...spiratualism vs science as pinbacker seemed like he had some enlightment and saw god through the sun...also, remember the psycologist on the ship, he was also heading the same direction pinbacker was and for him i dont think it was religious but more spiratual, because remember his speach about darkness and the feeling of darkness and what not and how it made him feel...that is spirtualism talk...
so those are 2 ways you could interpret the movie...
one other way you could see it is just the unknown vs science (which is more of how i saw it with a bit of spirtualism)...because really nothing is known about the sun and what would happen when you would approach it and with the pay load (in the movie the computer also made it clear there were too many unknown factors when it reached the sun). so they just had to deal with this unknown, and pinbacker was a factor of what might happen to the human mind as it approached the sun, psychologically it seemed like he went insane...it seemed like this could be an underlying theme because it didnt seem like they knew it would work in the first place, so they are playing the game of current science vs. the unknown and who would win. pinbacker was just another casualty of the unknown aspect.
i for one was not disappointed with the ending because i think his appearance had a purpose to the movies intent...like sigley said i also do not know what he intended but this is some speculation that i think makes sense...

I just think it pales in comparison to the atmosphere you get earlier on, as blurring out your main antagonist, while having some cool shots, does not do favours in upping the scare factor.

Just a few thoughts...
Is The Diving Bell & The Butterfly worth watching? I've never heard of it.
I was surprised at the lack of love for American Gangster. I thought Crowe would get the nod in a supporting role for sure.
I havne't got a clue what "Atonement" is or why it's nominated for best picture. While I can recognize No Country For Old Men as a great picture, I found it far too slow for my liking. I'm pretty sure There Will Be Blood will take it down. It's a shame because Juno was easily the movie I enjoyed the most, though realizing it has no chance in hell of winning best picture.

Can someone explain the end of Saw 4 to me? I got most of it, the lesson Rigs was to learn, the cop was the helper, etc. I'm unclear of the timeline between the 3 and 4. Mainly concerning Jigsaws body being at the beginning and then at the end.

Saw 3 and 4 take place at the same time. While Rigg is chasing clues around, the events of Saw 3 are taking place
The autopsy actually takes place after everything. They just decided to show it at the beginning and then recounted another set of events that led to it.
It is then revealed that the events of Saw IV have run concurrently to those of Saw III, with Strahm intercepting Jeff just after the deaths of Jigsaw, Amanda and Doctor Lynn. The autopsy scene that occurred at the beginning of the film is shown again, revealing it to have occurred after the events of the film and not before. As the tape found in Jigsaw's stomach is played again, Detective Hoffman is told that he will not walk away untested, and that Jigsaw's games have just begun.

It's not really that you're not supposed to know but more like they just don't bother to mention it. It's not the big twist of the movie anyway. Once again, sorry for not including the spoiler tag in the first place.

That depends on the child. I watched all those Freddy/Jason/Chucky horror movies when I was around that age. I had a few nightmares about Chucky but I w
