as well as plenty of monitors to run Dreamcast MvC2 (it looks NIIIICE!)

Also... if you have a DC VGA adapter... PLEASE bring it!!


Format:
MvC2/3S will be round robin pools to qualify/be seeded into the main double elim bracket. The pools will eliminate half and seed the other half (i.e. finishing 2nd in a pool won't make you be placed into the loser's bracket.)

SSBM will be standard double elim for singles/doubles.

Exact #'s of final qualifying bracket and the size of the pools will be determined by # of entrants.

Tourney Fees:

Tourney entrance fee: 10$

Venue Fee: 5$


All matches will be 2of3, save Grand Finals, which will be 3 of 5. Standard Rules for all games.

Payout per tourney:

<10 entrants 66/33
10-20 entrants: 58/28/14
over 20 entrants 53/26/14/7
over 50 entrants 50/25/12.5/6.25/3.125/3.125

This is a new attempt at a more fair payout system that will pay down to more players with more entrants to the pot. Hopefully that is more incentive for more people to come. It's open to discussion for future tourneys, but that is what the payouts will be for this tourney.

Well, I really hope there isn't a real hard choice. Reasons why C3 is better:

1. Guarunteed setups. I personally have games and systems for each of the games being played at this tourney. Other tourneys haven't had certain setups (I.e. Dreamcasts.) That won't be a problem.

2. More Stations. There are 10 TV's (2 50's, 4 27's, 4 20's) and plenty of monitors there BEFORE anyone brings extra TV's. That's 4 stations for 3S, 3 monitors for MvC2, and 4 stations for Smash.

3. Bring your own Console room. The patio room will be setup so that we can put 3 TV's there for any casual gaming people wanna bring.

4. Different layout. The pool table will be moved to the side, allowing more room for people. The big screens will be positioned differently. And the marvel monitors will be in the side room with their own space.

5. Venue fee will be constant 5$. One time fee, as many games as you want to play in.

6. Later opening. People can hang as late as they want and play casuals. Unlike a mall or arcade, which will close.

7. Smaller focus. I'm only running 3 games... so I can sincerely run 3 quality tourneys.


I'm hoping there's not a conflict of dates again, but who knows if Jinmaster wants to continue running simultaneous tourneys out of spite. No ill will towards him, but that's what it was.

I don't see why. JM didn't even have a dreamcast on hand from what I heard, and he definitely didn't give Marvel 3 monitors. You should prolly go to the better equipped and prepared tourney for Marvel, not just what happens to be 5 minutes closer.

Robin, Ima try to make it to yours, even if I do have class. C3 is a much better option, thats what me and others had to compare to yesterday, when we were pretty much bummed out be the lack of preparation and organization.

I really dont want C3 Tournaments to happen anymore. I feel like there was NO tournaments in NOVA, and then when I started running them, it seems like you trying to steal what I tried to build up.


I will be at the NEXT SpringField Tournament. I will bring all the said equipment. I debating on the date. Is it possible for you to stop running tournaments at C3 Robin? IE this be your last one? Anmie FX is better for the community overall. I am on the verge of getting sponsorship for my upcoming tournaments (thousands of dollars). The manager at Anime FX is a great contact, and can help us out more in the long run than C3.

Man, do you got things wrong. If you thought C3 was greedy, you should of saw the guys at Anime FX. These guys were making everybody pay before entering the venue. I was practically bombarded by the employees when I first walked in. And the thing that made me pissed off was the fact that the employees were basically telling me to leave if I did not pay the venue fee. Then I asked to talk to the tournament director, because I wanted to know what was going on w/ Marvel. Instead of letting me go to the back to ask my questions, an employee escorted me to the back, and waited there until I finished talking to him. After we were done, he basically asked me to pay for the fee or leave.

Now I understand that this is a business, but they were being way too anal, especially for a local tourney. And the people were getting pissed because DR was being held in the arcade, they thought that they were taking business away from them. But the fact of the matter was that most of the people who did enter the DR tourney, had already paid for their venue fee. To complain after they had already paid for something that they were not using at the time is damn right stupid.

Well, I believe there were 3 people still left in the Winner's bracket when the time would have normally come to have a Winners Finals.

Instead, the 3 remaining players were taken from Winners and a round robin was done (10x, Deviljin and I), to determine which of the 3 would advance to Grand Finals, and who would be kicked down to Losers bracket.

Deviljin got the most points in that Round Robin, so he advanced to Grand Finals.

10x and I were bumped down to Losers Finals. But the two of us couldn't just do a set to see who goes on to represent Losers bracket in Grand Finals, because then it wouldn't have taken ANY of the bracket into consideration.

So, we did another Round Robin which included the two people from the Winners Bracket that got bumped down (10x and I), and the player from the Losers bracket that had advanced the farthest (the other Chun player, I can't remember the name). It's just like having the Losers Bracket Finals with the one who just got bumped down from Winners, it's just that we had 3 players so we did another Round Robin to determine who would go onto Grand Finals.

10x got the most points in that Round Robin, so he advanced to Grand Finals. I got the 2nd most points, so I got 3rd place, and the other Chun player ended up getting 4th place.

10x advances to Grand Finals out of Losers Bracket, and has to win 2 sets versus Deviljin to get 1st. He wins both sets, and gets 1st, Deviljin gets 2nd, and 3rd (Me) and 4th (other Chun player) had already been determined.

Honestly, I wouldn't have minded fighting for my spot at 3rd, but I guess the Round Robin was enough. People seemed pretty confused by the brackets anyway, so I don't think it would've helped much to suggest another set to determine 3rd.

Well, just to clarify, this is just Pat's opinion...me, as long as Jinmaster throws "his" monthly on a different date, I'm there 100%. We don't know either David or JM personally, so what good is it to support one in place of another? Last month obviously wasn't the right approach, but the more opportunities the scene has to improve themselves the better.

My main reason for not going to C3 last time was because everyone else who was going that I wanted to hang out with was going to Jinmaster's, to play 3S among other things.

That being said, I'm up for bringing all the GG back to C3, assuming they want us. :/

If I'm going to add a 4th game, it will be Guilty Gear, but I'm thinking along the lines of skipping this month, keeping it a low managable 3 games, and doing Guilty Gear Slash next month around 5/13. That way, I'll have enough time to procure the resources on my own. I don't want to be in a situation that I have to rely on someone else for my first station.

That being said, I want this tourney to focus on a small number of games, and show the true quality tourney that C3 can run.

I also apperciate the support i've gotten in this thread. It means a whole lot to me, and reminds me why I continue to do this thing called tourney directing. To all of you who've expressed support and said they'll come regardless...

Make sure you pay attention to 2 things:

1. Tourney format: It will be Round Robin style to qualify. ala Evo style, but the pools will be bigger, more people will qualify out of them, and not qualifying first won't put you in losers.

2. Tourney payout will change as more people enter , and won't be the near winner take all system we've had going.




Also, for people who want to play CvS2, GG, whatever, there will be a dedicated area for casuals. We should be able to fit 3-4 Stations in there.

Well, I don't know if I'll be able to get to the cyber club in time to do casuals with you. If I do even make it out to this thing it'll definitely be just when the tournament starts. We can definitely play some online matches though. We probably won't get too much lag seeing how close you are and all. Still, nothing beats some good offline matches. Hopefully Jin will have another tourney on my day off.

Yeah, I would like to learn the game but the only 2 characters I'd probably use are like Kim and Mr.Big. Just cuz I love Kim and Mr.Big is just pimpin (and he's top tier). They should just call the game Mr.Big's Battle Colliseum. :lol: I have no idea how the game system works so that doesn't help either. I just see D-Assault and 3 super bars and outside of that I have no idea what other elements there are to the game system, or anything. All I know is Mr.Big's c.LP owns all.

I play 2D games. Dont play Marvel cause u can only use 5 characters in the whole game (wait...so I can't use Hayato, Strider, Ryu, or Wolverine?). Plus I'm not battle ready yet for 3s. So I stick w/ GG, CvS2, gave up Soul Cal cause it's wack.

How you think the turnout for this wil be? And whats this about these RTS games goin on? I thought this was a fighting game tournament?

Money matches biatches Cvs 2 mainly but We should def. get some poker and I will play smash brothers too. I might do 3s but I never really got into that game but I will gladly be someones punching bag if need be. I will also help run this tourney and give it support. There can be room for a ton of casuals......Too bad the date has been pushed back for the alpha collection and the 360 st because EB GAMES "my work" promised me help to acquire the number of titles to bring these games to a tournement!!! so my suggestion next time is pocket fighter, any of the alphas and that new st on the 360......even though sticks are hard to come by....its good to play something new for a change......Little Mac from punchout gonna be on the next smash brothers too!!!! *star punches glass joe*pwned

No CvS2... cuz no one really plays it. Last 3 or 4 attempted CvS2 tourneys in this area I've seen were all cancelled b/c no one wants to play. I'll definitely have it up on a casual TV, since Moose wants to do some money matches.

Marvel may only be a fraction more popular than CvS2, but at least people will show up.

Dude, there are tons of hotels in the area, just do a search for motel 6 or best western or something. It's like 5 minutes away from dulles airport.... so....

Robin: Why isn't CVS2 there it's picking back up and lots of people are starting to play again. I understand that you want to attend to the 3s and Mvc2 players, but more MD players would attend if you had a Cvs2 torney or atleast I would show up.


The reason I don't want to make CvS2 or anything else "official" is b/c this is my first tourney at C3. I don't want to run a clusterfuck of tourneys w/ 9 tourneys on 7 tv's and everyone being crazy.

I would rather do a few tournaments extremely well, and have C3 as the place to go for monthly tourneys in DC. That's my job.

That's why I'm doing pools and seeding what not for the 3 tourneys I do have, to make them more interesting, fair, and competitive.

I still can't find anyone who plays Razz seriously... as in, would rather play Razz than hold em.

I like 7 stud alot though.

But Hold em is one of the only poker variants that really shines at no limit. Everything else you almost HAVE to play limit.

Anyway, We'll do an official game after the first set of tourneys are over. I got the chips and stuff.


As for turnout, I think it'll be pretty strong. Haven't had a quality tourney in this area in awhile.

As far as less talent is concerned, I figure the larger tournament there is, the better you have to be to get 4th or 5th place. Take evolution. Justin Wong got 4th place. Now you can either say he's "less talented", or that he had a bad run that day. Either way, with a tourney of about 150 or so people, over 1500$ in the prize pool... and 4th place goes home with an "atta boy!!"... Something's not right there.

So, I'm changing the payout structure a little bit. Pretty much, the first placing gets you your money back. every place higher pays you about double. 1st place still is guarunteed half or over half the pot.

Considering I expect most tourneys to be in the 20-50 range, The only real change is 4th place getting some money.

Should Justin have gotten "some" sort of prize for 4th place at evo? I think so, and this is my solution. I hope it will recieve a positive response.

Although, I'd like to add that back in the day when we didn't make top 3...we had to go home and work on some new shit to bring to the table to make that money and that's just the way it was. I understand your points. It's hard to bring about change in any part of tourneys in this community. I want to thank you for being willing to try, though.

My logic is that it's probably much more difficult to get 4th in a 49 person tourney than 3rd in a 12 person tourney. Yet before, only 3rd place got a prize.

This way, more prizes are handed out, maybe that makes people more likely to attend future tournements. We never really lose 1st or 2nd place players, but it's the 4th-9th place players that leave the scene every day. I expect 1st place players to grumble, but if this payout gives more incentive for more people to play b/c it has a better shot at money, 1st place gets more money overall since 50% of all money goes to them.

Lot of reasoning in there, but I want to thank everyone for the willingness to try it out.

It was poker that made me think about fighting game tourney payouts mostly. I was like "man, Joe Hachem won the worlds biggest poker tourney... and he didn't even get 20%" He got like 7 million out of fifty some million in total prizes.

I think it's great that you've extended the money placings, man. That's one thing I've always hated about tournaments, that only the top two or three get rewarded. Even when I win, I think it's stupid. I mean, who cares about the best players? It should be about the community, not about the people who currently sit at its peak. If you want to get more people involved, one of the ways to do it is to make the financial rewards in tournaments more spread out and available. Screw this whole elitist crap where only the top two or three players get money.

You won't need a Dreamcast stick. Just buy a converter. They're cheap on www.play-asia.com. Most likely they'll be playing the PS2 version but if they do play the DC version people will have converters (I'll probably bring my own just incase).

Arguing over who has the better Elena is pretty pointless IMO, you still get owned by scrubby Chun Li's hitting fierce.

Speaking of which, I sometimes play with Elena, and I find myself basically using her as a neutered chun li. Since her main avenue of damage seems to be low strong verified -> brave dance (or ex spin scythe-> juggle) ... She's got a really far kara throw, and B+RH sorta works like Back fierce (i.e. throw it out, watch it beat everything).
The main problem is that her super is confirmed over a high hitting, high/low parry move, and doesn't do as much damage for just about as much meter.
At first, her high-low game seems fun/promising, but all of it is high risk/ low damage, and ultimately doesn't win matches. Am I right on all of this? Or do I just not "get" elena??

That's right. That's why more people don't use Elena at high level play. You'd have to be an extremely proficient Elena player to beat top people with her. Combofiend makes it look easy but it's definitely not that easy to mix the hell out of top Yun/Chun players and still survive. c.MP is good but...like you said, it's too easy to parry down. Her mix up game is serious shit though and she does overall have a strong enough poking game to deal with a lot of the characters in the game. A good jump in combo from Elena can do serious damage too. Plus healing allows for all kinds of mind fucks.

Oh and I'm just picking on the poker guy cuz...he plays poker. :lol:

Yes, I need VGA hookups. I have 2 currently in my possesion. 3 is nessesary, 4 is ideal. Remember, more VGA hookups means more DC's than can play for tourneys, casual/ whatever.

Also, having a minijack -> RCA audio (red/white) converter is a plus, so we can get sound. C3 has plenty of computer speakers.

Aw...that's harsh man. I had to hit up some of my other tourney going friends to make sure I had a ride cuz I just assumed my usual guys were going this week. So I had to double cover myself at the last minute to make sure I had a ride. Yeah, I met Shinshay at the very first DC monthly (fortunately I didn't have to fight his pokey Chun). I met quite a few XBL heads there. Including RockmanX4 (who doesn't post/play much anymore). Now that I got some practice in (aka Ibuki beatdowns) from Shay's Chun online I look forward to competing offline against the kung fu queen. :tup:
