Hmm, it's not that bad.
The problem with the DS is that voice chat is not very incorporated into the games. For the Wii, most if not all games will have voice chat, meaning all you have to do is ask people and put it in later. A bit less inconvenient then an invite system, but not that bad.

I saw this coming. It's sucks but maybe they will improve it before launch or down the road.

I totally don't care.
What's so bad about friend codes?
If it works like Mario Kart DS, then that's perfect.

E3 2006: Wii Wi-Fi Just Like DS
No standard interface and... friend codes? We've got the scoop.
by Matt Casamassina
May 11, 2006 - Nintendo Entertainment Analysis and Development's general manager, Takahashi Tezuka, recently chatted with IGN about Wii and its online functionality. The EAD leader confirmed once and for all that Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection on Wii would be an extension of the DS service and would not feature a standard interface like Xbox Live. And, uh, yes, get ready to enter those friend codes again.
IGN Wii: What is your plan for the Wi-Fi Connection and how might it compare to Xbox Live?
Takahashi Tezuka: Well, the Wii Wi-Fi Connection works the same as the Nintendo DS one. It's the three qualities that we emphasize. It's easy, safe and free.
IGN Wii: Will it have a central interface a la Live that all games will interact with, or will it be different on a game-by-game basis?
Tezuka: It'll be just like the DS so the interface will depend on the software.
IGN Wii: Will Wi-Fi Connection on Wii also use a Friends Code system?
Tezuka: Yes.

The Wii will be using DS like wifi, which has it's own fair share of issues

The DS is the very first time I ever played online. Being the "casual online player" I can say that the DS wifi interface is easy for anyone to use. I think that is what Nintendo is aiming for: something that anyone can easily configure, basically, for the non- and casual gamers.

Stupid question but I havent actually played online with my DS yet: Do you have 1 friend code overall or is it one friend code PER game?

It's per game.

Looks like friend code per game...........although I've only played Mario Kart online so far.

Yeah, I think it does. It's also possible that such a thing is built into the system itself.

LOL you make it sound like the WII can connect to the internet on it's own....
The USB wifi adapter just makes your internet wireless, so the DS and WII can connect.

I didn't mean it like that. I meant that the Wi-Fi connector may not be something you have to physically attach to your computer like the USB thingy. The Wii itself might have the thing that makes your internet wireless without you having to attach the USB connector.

I thought it was suppose to be wi-fi ready out of the box, so if you already have wi-fi, you can piggyback right on to your pre-existiant connection.
The USB thing is only to wirelessly piggyback onto to your land line internet, right?

It could be worse, it is clunky but hey it's free.

Does it matter? While the friend code interface is a little clunky, the fact that there's little to no "player interaction" at least ensures you'll be safe from the majority of internet douchebags... for the most part.

NDS already has wireless built in, thats as far as the console itself can go. For a console's wireless to mean anything there needs to be a source signal that is attached to an internet connection that is sharing the connection. In other words, if the console has wireless built in, its the same thing as if you have an ethernet connection and cat 5 cable, unless its connected to something its worthless.

There's probably no way Nintendo would ever get rid of the friend code system, especially after that incident that happened recently over xbox live. Some kid and older guy started talking, then started sending nude pictures to each other, then finally the kid met him in a park and got molested.
While, yeah, it's a kinda dumb system and it sorta sucks that friend codes are different for each game, it covers Nintendo's ass for legal incidents. Overall I'd say it's not a huge problem. Better it than nothing at all.

Can it run lobbies with the friend code system. I never played on a ds, but it sounds something like a direct connection between players. Really hope they can set it up to have lobbies, SSBB wouldn't work as well otherwise.
Yea for those who have played Metroid Prime for DS, i think the Friend's lobby was good.
It's retarded how you cannot control which friends to play with in mario kart, so as long as you can control who you want to play with, like the metroid lobby system, then it's ok.

Metroid's setup was the most flexible DS setup yet. You could use the "Find Game" option to play random people in Battle mode (similar to Mario Kart). However, after the match you and the other players could add each other as rivals.
The other modes is called "Friends & Rivals" which is more of a lobby set-up. It allows you to create a game, and have either your friend or rivals join it, no random players though. This mode had all the gameplay modes available (I imagine this could be done for random game searches as well) and allowed you to Voice Chat or Text Message your friends (not rivals, no talking of any kind to them, which goes back to that safety thing I mentioned).
So Metroid had a lobby system, but it's limited to people you've exchanged friend codes with or agreed to be rivals with. I imagine Wii games will have a similar system, but really it's all up to the developer.
