View Full Version : I tried to pre-order PS3...

I've been trying to pre-order a PS3 for the past few days and the shit is just impossible because of the whole "Xbox 360 shortage" from last year. I work at Best Buy and employees aren't able to buy new systems for the first 3 months (retarded) so I have to buy from an outside vendor. I tried to make a deal with one of my managers by telling him that if he let me buy one I'd buy $200 worth of attachments/games (which I planned on doing anyways) but I got shot down. Since I'm one of the top 3 most knowledgeable gamers in my store I know I'll most likely get stuck working that day because I need to "make sure customers dont just buy the box and leave." Anyways, Best Buy, Circuit City and Wal-Mart dont do preorders, so I ruled them out. That leaves me with "EB Gamestop" (which is what I call them since they're the same company now) or GameCrazy. I call EBGS and they tell me that because of their Xbox360 disaster they arent taking preorders until they have confirmation on how many they're going to get, which they should get in OCTOBER:wasted: (WTF?)! My conversation with Gamecrazy went something like this:

Me: "Hi, I wanted to know if you guys are doing pre-orders for PS3?"

Employee:"Yes, we've been taking them since E3 2005."

Me:"....Seriously?!"

Employee:"Yeah, it wasn't my idea but we have somewhere around 140 pre-orders."

Me:"Well, good luck on launch day."

Employee:"I hope I dont work that day."

So I think I may just stalk Amazon or wait for EB to release their pre-order date so I can put my money down (about $600-$700). The great thing is that Best Buy shares a parking lot with EB and Gamestop is across the street (dont ask, my town is fuckin loopy) so I can waltz over there on launch day and scoop my system.
BTW, I will be picking up a Wii (most likely in March/April) and I will never be picking up a 360. For some reason, when I go over to my friends houses to play their 360's for like 2 hours, that's enough for me. I'm not denying that their future looks amazing, I just wont buy the system....ever.

I'm sorry I cannot verify as I am not in the United States but I've heard Toys-R-Us and FYE are taking pre-orders, you might want to give those guys a call and see what your options are there.

Hope it's not bogus, just something I've heard so hopefully it helps but I can't verify...

Don't people that pay more for the system(IE. in full) get priority over the $10 dollar putdowns(or whatever it is now)? That's how I got screwed over on PS2 launch.

Yeah, if you put down the full amount of the system your system will be held for 48 hours, hence me strolling in that bitch anytime that day!

I called up my loacl EB and GS and both said that they'll start taking pre-orders next week. I'll just put $50 down for now and hope im one of the top 5.

Off-Topic: What is it like working at BestBuy. I'm gonna apply in a bit online and go in tommorow and ask the manager if they're hiring and let him know I want a job there. What department or whatever would you suggest I apply for.

Best departments to work in are Computers/Geek Squad/Media.
I've worked Computers, Media, Digital Imaging, Appliances, HR. It's actually a chill place to work and we're not on commission so there's no pressure to make GIGANTIC sales. Media(CD's/Movies/Games) I'd say is the best, especially if you're looking for morning shifts. Theres nothing like working 6AM-10AM, walking out the door as the first customers walk in is so beautiful.

I guess my town is loopy too, because it's the same way here. Well....actually it's a Babbages across the road. But a GameStop is about a minute down the road from them both.

Yeah, not only that but Blockbuster and Hollywood video are literally across the street from each other and facing each other. Nothing beats the Lakeside,CA Best Buy store though. They share a parking lot with Circuit City(Can you say "Price Match?")! That's like McDonald's sharing a parking lot with BK! Shit is bananas, I know. Oh and thanks all for the advice, I'm probably just gonna end up stalking EB because the nearest Toys'R'Us is a 25 minute drive north to San Jose.

I'm not pre-ordering, I dont trust playstations first models. I'll wait a month or so and then buy it. Plus I hate the line-ups.

Yea. I've gotten pwned numerous time by the dreaded "Disc Read Error".

Guess I'll be putting all my money on one because I couldn't be bothered to camp with £500 - £600. Also if there's problems, that's what a warrenty is for.

Just like with the 360, I wouldn't trust small stores on this one, folks.

I remember hearing about a local FYE whom Microsoft told they were getting up with 30 lauch system but ended up with ZERO.

My EB had about 50 pre-ordered but only about 20 at launch. Many of the leftovers, did wait patiently for the next few months.

And if Sony is telling the truth, then they are expected to ship 2 million worldwide at launch, and then 2 million by the end of 2006. Which is a LOT more than the 360 did last year.

Well that's better. I don't understand 19-23 year olds these days. They want to only work 3 or 4 hours a day, just stand around and not do shit when they DO work, and they bitch when they get a small-ass check. Kids these days...no work ethic. No wonder my company keeps firing new people. I can't help but think that your shift is that long cuz everyone else is just jacking off, and the management knows you're one of the few people who actually perform, so as a reward (?), you have to work longer.

Yeah, as many horror stories there are about console malfunctions, the actual percent of these malfunctions is about 1% of all the first versions.
