After pondering what new sporty car to get (g35 coupe, rx8, sti, etc) I realized they are all overpriced and can't even compare to a normal sport bike....So DUH! I'm gonna sign up for motorcycle lessons and eventually get an entry level bike.

I was thinking of a kawasaki ninja 500

I wanna get a busa eventually, but....I hear you need to be pretty experienced for those ( 0-60 in 2.4 seconds will kill most people lol)

So anyone got a bike? Any tips for a newbie, I dunno much about bikes....
Do cops pull you over much? I often see bikers get pulled over....

ps - keep it sport, I dun like the chopper/harley/cruisers

I don't ride but I think a 500 is a good starter. Stay away from that Busa tho. I've seen that thing leave without its rider.

Unfortunately those are just Replicas but I can dream right.

Also their are some bikes that have been made that have been inspired by Kaneda's bike

I ride, have done sport touring and wrench/work on old Japanese bikes. Thank god you seem to have a level head because you mentioned the safety course and are looking at exactly the perfect 1st bike. Don't even think about a Busa....not even a 600 or any of that for a while, you will kill yourself.....shit, you can kill yourself on that 500 too if you don't respect it. You should look at the Suzuki SV650 or the GS500, great 1st bikes.

I've been pulled over twice, both times I was let go because I was 100% legal and respectful. If you ride like an ass you're going to jail or going to die. Don't run from cops, you're just asking for it.. Sure I get on it from time to time and do my share of speeding but its all relative....if you do it all the time and are reckless it'll catch up to you quick. Bikers have a bad reputation in general....be aware of this and project the opposite image.

First thing, get a helmet, boots, jacket and some gloves. If you're serious about riding get your gear. Take the safety course and read up on riding/technique. Join a motorcycle forum and soak up some old geezer's advice for a while. Experience and wisdom from other bikers (smart ones) is vital to the noob but deadly if you get bad advice from a stroker aka squid. Don't be a squid. Don't buy a brand new gsxr1000 as your first bike and ride it with a t-shirt, shorts and sandles with your girl on the back. Drive defensively, if you are too agressive you will kill yourself. And I guess most importantly, find a mentor....somebody who is good at riding, smart with safety and willing to guide you along.

Best of luck and stay safe, there is no room for error on a bike and if you ride/act like an ass you'll be a squid and get yourself and others killed. Don't be a squid.

Check it out, I'm selling my first street bike. Vintage standard style.

Cool, thanks for the info.
I was wondering, do bikes require more maintenance and hardware knowledge than a car, cause I know very little for both  ?
And how long is the average life span of a bike in km...?

bill_rizer that kaneda replica bike looks cool, but it doesn't look like a very practical/aerodynamic design...but I guess animes don't care about that heh

I don't think so... My dad owned two BMW bikes, one sport touring and one just touring. He didn't do a lot of maitance on either cept for storage in the winter and oil changes I think. I despartely want a bike too man. Although I needs a car first. If I lived in like California or some other warm state then I'd probably have a bike.

Please get saftey gear. Like V-addict said, falling off a bike will FUCK you up. Road rash is nasty as shit and you don't want to sit in the hospital dreaming about how awesome it would be to go on a twilight ride down interstate whatever. Get some dragon pants (I think they are called) or just some super tough jeans. I say get two jackets, a lighter weight one with padding, and a heavier one. Also continuly brush up on your skills. My dad went to a few BMW rallies and they had skill courses and he learned a lot about manuevering a big bike like the KLT1200 (I think that's the number). So yeah, find the proper gear, and find a like minded riding buddy until you feel you can fuck up on your own and be alright.

I think a year ago I was looking at that same 500. I prefer sport touring since you can use saddle bags and I want to go on trips when I get a bike.

Gosh, from going to a rally, the life span of a bike really depends. You'll hear stories of people riding CONSTANTLY across the country hitting 100,000 miles. I guess it depends on what you do. Bikes don't go under the same wear and tear as cars since you are less likely to try and ride in the snow or during a thunderstorm or dirt roads, etc. I almost want to say that a bike will last as long as you take care of it but I dunno lol.

I'm not suprised that this thread doesn't get much love. Most people don't rind motorcycles. They are either scared to (with good reason) or just not interested. For me, once I got a taste of what it felt like to do 90+ with nothing but the air around you and an engine under you, it became a dream to own a motorcycle.
