View Full Version : The transition from online to offline...

I just went to a tournament at X30 in Rockville MD today and today it made me realize just how much I've come from just playing on Xbox Live and screwing around with my couple buddies to meeting up with lots of competitive players offline and competing in tournaments. I haven't been to a real major tournament yet but I've been to a good load of smaller tournaments in my area and I've played against a lot of good people.

I guess today just stood out cuz I got a chance to fight againts a lot of good East Coast players off the bat. Nasser, Shinshay and the East Coast beast J.Wong. J.Wong decided to come down to check out the venue (I'm assuming he liked it) and actually participated in the 3S and CVS2 tournaments. He rocked me in both games and I had to play him back to back in both games. Was shut out by him in CVS2 and then came right around to getting shut out by him and being thrown in loser's bracket for 3S. My SA1 Ibuki vs. his SA3 Yun.

Then I had to play against Nasser back to back in CVS2 and then 3S (SA1 Ibuki vs. SA3 Ken). Beat me easily in CVS2 and then in 3rd Strike I just got wasted again. It's funny considering that I beat him in the unfinished 3S tournament at Anime FX and then just fucks me up at X30. He definitely does adapt quickly that's for sure.

I didn't get a chance to fight Shinshay but he did pretty well up until the finals with him vs. J.Wong. J.Wong used SA3 Yun pretty much most of the way up to the finals (I heard he used Chun a few times but he otherwise used SA3 Yun) and of course Shinshay decided to go with SA3 Ken since he's a decent matchup against Yun. As fate would have it...J.Wong shut him out in the finals 3-0. I witnessed most of the finals and it was hard to watch Shinshay get wrecked like that. Like almost getting rounds and still getting his EX air hurricane kick parried and then punished on the way down by a Yun chain combo. Shinshay still put up a good fight but J.Wong was always one over him at all times. I would have liked to see him pull out some Chun but it was intersting to watch J.Wong play a character that relies a little bit more on offensive gameplay. Shows versatility.

I was dissapointed that I got shut out early but even if I did win against Nasser it would have been maybe one more fight and then I would have had to fight J.Wong in the finals any ways.

I guess where I'm trying to get with all of this is that offline play is just different. (hence the topic name...lol). Since my area is all of a sudden gathering a tournament scene with big tournament organizers and their sponsors showing interest...offline play is becoming much more accessible and has now created more incentive for people to go out play competitively. It's one thing when you play online and mess around but...when you play a good offline match at a tournament there's so much more to it. Between lots of spectators and people crowding you to realizing that you have to be on point and every mistake you make can be capitalized on. As opposed to online where you can sometimes make a few mistakes because of the delay and still come back with a random offensive to win. Which is obviously why higher level players like J.Wong don't play online. It's just not right when you know you could have done something but because of the lag...you don't perform the way you should have.

Of course J.Wong has also been to Japan multiple times and won numerous tournaments but...that's what makes the difference between just playing 3rd Strike cuz it's a fun game and playing 3rd Strike at a truly competitive level. A level that IMO creates the most fun as you are constantly learning new strategies and how to adapt to them. A new player creates a whole new set of criteria to deal with. You just don't get that with online play. You can get close with a really awesome connection but...even they you still have that slight bit of delay that makes things just that much more random. A fight with delay just pretty much ruins the game since a lot of the game is based on mix ups/reaction and when people just mash throw and randomly parry cuz of the delay and hope for shit...it's just not the same.

I guess I just typed this just out of finally realizing a good bit of what real tournament play is like. It's definitely the best way to play 3rd Strike and any other competitive fighting game. Casuals are good but...tournaments with good players are what truly solidifies your game and you can't do that over Xbox Live where the delay just fucks shit up.

Word, I wish I could have been there to see you guys duke it out. Especially Shinshay and J.Wong. I can tell those were good fights especially after you mentioned J.Wong parrying those EX Hurricanes and going in for a chain combo afterwards. That must have been great.

Just couldn't read all that DevilJin....lol. Though I got your drift.

I wish now I didn't get rid of my sticks. I want to play again. I was making some great strides in my game but my life is too fucking busy. I'm not a college student, I'm just a dude trying to do good and get his career going. Or get into law school....whatever comes first.

IF 360 gets live than that'll be a huge boon to me. I'll wait till someone makes a 360 compatible custom stick and purchase that. Untill then....I may have to regulate getting the crappy T5 stick again (shit it's only 18 bucks from a Mom&Pop I live near by to) and work with that again. I want to play you guys again. The controller though isn't going to cut it.

I think I read somehwere Pyro practices between like 6-8 hours a day or something. Truly competitive play is on a WHOLE NOTHER level.

Yeah...I only won like one round in like 2 matches that I had against J.Wong. He was using Yun which I'm guessing is like a secondary character for him. Seeing that he uses Chun at most high level tournaments. I heard he did use Chun Li against another Ibuki player there but I didn't get to see that match.

Aaron/10x and another guy were video taping footage of the finals and a little bit of the casuals afterwards so if the vids get uploaded you guys can get to see the fight with J.Wong and Shinshay and J.Wong vs. myself. I remember at one point I purposely tried to red parry him out of Genei and I just got my ass whupped. I figured I was gonna lose any ways so I tried to do something flashy to get the crowd going and paid for it with my ass.

LOL. I totally forgot I didn't tell you about this one. You should have checked the tournament forums any ways. Technically that's my bad though. So many damned tournaments came up last month I forgot to let u know bout all of them. Well...the next tournament will probably be on June 10th at C3 again so I'll PM you and let you know what's going on with that. I'll need a ride so I'll let you know what's up in my PM. Sorry again about that shit. You would have had fun getting beasted by Shinshay and J.Wong

All I am saying is that JWong isn't human ^_^. I have videos of the following matches and I will put them up when I move into my new house next week.

Shinshay (Ken) vs FMan (Chun Li)
Shinshay (Ken) vs Jeron (Elena)
Shinshay (Ken) vs 10x (Ken)
Shinshay (Ken) vs JWong(Yun) - Winners Finals
Shinshay (Ken) vs UltraDavid(Q) - Losers Finals
Shinshay (Ken) vs JWong(Yun) - Grand Finals

Quote - Not being on XBL feels great.

Playing JWong made me play totally outside of my regular gameplay. You guys will see the difference when I move these online.

Interested in seeing that Elena/Ken match. That matchup is so hard for me (using Elena) so I'd like to see that one.

Having a group of guys to play offline has made 3s more enjoyable for me. I always love a good challenge, especially when I don't have to worry about lag. Now I just need to tighten up/replace my stick to see if that will correct my execution problems (i.e. cancelling into dps and supers when I don't want to).

Of course, at my current skill level, playing someone like Justin will probably make me swear off of 3S forever...

That makes sense because most people aren't use to fighting a high level Ryu player. Ryu can pressure people better than Ken can in the corner. Best of all, you can be safe and pressure and work at a methodical pace. And.... Denjin in the corner=ggpo.

Everyone knows what to expect from Ken, Chun and Yun. Thats why when you bring in mid tiers and you can dominate with them people are like "wtf do I do? How do I handle this?"

Besides, random LK Tatsu's eat up Chun's dashes lol:rofl: :wgrin:

Nah, I'm not going to ECC. Unfortunately never made plans to go. Wish I could so I could meet up with J.Wong and the boys again. Right now though I have a local tournament in my area that's giving away tickets to Evo so I'm just trying to concentrate on getting me a free ride to the big event in August.

Yea, but ive been playing on XBL for a good 5 months now, somewhat new to the fighting game scene as 3s is the first game that really got me interested in them.

I can't believe how different playing online is from playing at a local arcade and such, and it sucks because my area seems to be full of scrubs or people that don't even play 3s, so its hard to get good competition.

If theres anyone in the LA/OC Area that knows of a good arcade where I can get some good competition let me know, because XBL alone just isn't enough.

I'm sure you should find one in your area seeing you're in Cali (the biggest state in the country for fighting games). Check the regional forums in the main forums thread on the bottom of that page.

Man, I find the transition from offline to online so much tougher. When I play online for a long time I tend to work fools offline (if i don't do safe online shit when I play online). But to swap, and go from offline to online, I'm missing everything, even simple hit confirmations can go out the window lol.
