I was thinking of getting into music and I have always liked techno so I was wondering if there are any good programs out there and if anyone has any knowledge they'd like to share with me and everyone else on the board about not only programs, but possibly tips aswell if you are feeling generous.
As far as samples and backround on techno music this site seems to be very helpful:

To make some good techno all you need is limewire or bitcommet, and a looping program. Just loop 10seconds of a good song for 4 mins with some synths and drums in the background.

Buzz tracker is freeware and pretty powerful if you know how to use it. Check out buzzmachines.com
Good luck.

Jin, i use GarageBand for my techo needs. but it seems like everything i do in GB ends up sounding like trance. then again, i'm mostly using the stock loops; i need more loops though. i can link you to a few tracks i've done if you're interested.

I don't know anything about techno.
But I do make electronic music, there are a number of programs you can use. Buzz, Fruity Loops, Cubase, Pro Tools, Logic, there's too many, you can't go wrong with either one.
As for synths, I use Z3ta+, V-Station, Superwave-Trance pro (jp-8000 simulator, this is REAL good for making trance), Bass station, Atmosphere, and tons of sound fonts.
Since you're starting out, you should get yourself a demo of Vangaurd, that's real simple and it doesn't have too many knobs, and you won't have to worry much about technical details. It just makes sounds. Great for beginners.
Superwave trance pro is great, you can pretty much make generic trance track #16829 because it has great pre-sets. Get your hands on this. People bash on forms of electronic music because it's easy to make because all you do is twist nobs, I used to say "STFU you pricks" until I found out about this synth. YOU DONT EVEN HAVE TO TWIST ANY KNOBS HERE, YOU CAN MAKE GENERIC TRANCE TRACK #812832 with this synth. Trust me.
Z3ta is my favorite synth, it's VERY flexible. You can pretty much make unique sounds on this one.
Get your self a book. I use The Mixing Engineer's handbook for reference for eqing and such.
A lot of ram is also needed. 1gb of ram is the minimum to make music electronic music since it's very synth oriented, and synths eat up a ton of cpu. TRUST ME. 512mb of ram will only get you so far. 2gb is ideal. I've stopped producing because I've been playing a lot of wow, and I only have 1gb of ram. The freezing and clicking becomes annoying! Get yourself 2gb of ram.
Music theory helps too. Playing in the key of C or A minor is weak (but A minor's the bomb imo).
After you get your synths, get yourself a sample cd. Vengence CDs are awesome, and I love em.
It's all in the producer, not the gear imo. Of course you might make crap with free synths online that you download (but BT has made songs with using JUST free synths), but overall it's how you use your tools. Gabriel & Dresden use software exclusively and James Holden uses Buzz. Icone uses Superwave-trancepro and Fruity Loops. Fruity Loops gets a lot of hate, but it's actually very good.
Also, you won't get good overnight. Making electronic music is a whole different ballgame. You have to make your instruments, and you can't use typical chord progressions for the same synths, it always ends up sounding different. Knowing what keys to press for some crazy sound I programmed is the hardest part for me imo, followed by actually programming the synths. If you work a reasonable amount of time making music, they say it takes around 2 years average to find your sound, but it's different for everyone.
More later.........
