Was looking around at the MMO sites to see if there was a new MMO I could get into, saw Star Wars Galaxies, thought I'd have a look, went to the forums.
After reading through alot of the forums I was like WTF?? What happened? Everything I read about the game before the 'upgrade' aka 'New Game Experience'. Made me want to play the game. I mean over 20 classes, a pet tamer profession being able to control things the size of T-rex's in-game. Being able to set up tents and camps, people actually having fun playing together without having to be in a guild to so. And no weird laggeriffic FPS style combat.
I remember hearing about the SWG forums crashing when the update went on, and heaps of people cancelling their subscription or asking for a refund for the upgrade they bought.
Anyone here ever play SWG? How was the game before? How is the game now? Are you happy with it? I was thinking of playing it but after what I've read about the 'old' SWG I'm not so sure now.

All i know is when they "updated" it, they made it easier for new players to get into the game and create uber strong characters, while the vets of the game had played for 4 years and had just barely made it to jedi.
Kinda like how one character in a MMORPG will be nerfed, they nerfed the whole game.

Before the NGE, there was no class system, you gained different types of xp based on what you did used the xp to purchase skill boxes that upped your stats and resistances as well as specialized your characters in a certain way. The system allowed you to master two fields anything ranging from pistoleer to Rifleman to Bounty Hunter etc. The NGE shrunk the 20 somthing fields into like 8 or so white bread classes and allowed anyone to become a jedi instead of having to work for it.
They made the combat fast and twitchy, took out all skill and dumbed it down in hopes of gaining new fans at the expense of the old ones that were obviously not paying the bills, so to speak.
The Space combat is still fun and is what most people who stuck with it do all the time. Everything else is a waste of time.
Lastly, SWG had one of the deepest Economical systems I have ever seen in a game. Crafters were desperately needed as weapons decayed over time. The Crafting half of the game was as deep as many PC sim games on it's own. The NGE simplified this, made decay nominal and made all the good loot drop off of enemies to make the game easier for newcomers.
Long story short, no one new came, and they just had a broken buggy game with an angier fan base.

I would assume that it wasn't as great as it sounded before the upgrade if the developers went ahead and changed everything. I know a few people who were really pumped about SWG when it first came out, and within a week everyone that I knew who had been waiting so long had quit playing it.

Like I said, the fans loved it but they were not enough to carry the game finacially, which would be why the developers changed it... Reading is fun
I only described the difference between the two systems. I never said it was great. It was deep as all hell but very very grind intensive. That turned off may players. I came in late in the game and thought that is was cool but there was no way in hell I was going through all that to become a jedi.
The easiest way to think of it is this, If WoW was "Need for Speed" than SWG was "F1 2002" for the PC. SWG had more to it on paper but after hitting the gas for the first time and flipping your car, the time investment really does not seem worth it.

I played at launch, and solely did crafting. Started off making money on the bazaar, grinded my way up to master weaponsmith, made a few million creds (when that was a lot) off the resource system (Which was genius), then made a few hundred mill selling speeders when they came out.
Then I realized I had nothing to spend my money on : /
The game was a really nice interactive chat room, the town system was fucking awesome (build your house... ANYWHERE you want!), the politician system was cool, rebel vs empire PvP was a blast, but the entire combat system was pretty lame.
Long live Ahazi : (

Hahaha just typed in SWG in wikipedia and got this, the whole article for the game is a big complaint about NGE, they even have a disscussion page about the biased opinion of the writers and stuff lol
