Hey y'all. I looked for that official PSP thread but I can't find it for the life of me.

I bought a PSP. Firmware 1.52. I've heard that there's a program that lets me selectively choose fireware updates. I was wanting to know if anyone can point me in the right direction, and if the default 32mb memstick that comes with the thing will do for that purpose.

Note that, to stay kosher with SRK rules, I do NOT want this for emulation or DLing illegal software or anything. Just looking to maximize the capabilities of my new PSP.

EDIT - also, about the original "defective square button" issue; was that only for Japanese PSPs, or were US units hit?

You might want to check out these forums:

I haven't been there in a while, but it should still be a good place for stuff like this.

Thanks, chief. Looks like the Square button is fucked up after all (it's off-center). Gonna be returning it. And here I thought I lucked out getting an early firmware revision lol.

Okay, got my PSP with the PROPER square button. Has 1.52. Apparently, I can upgrade to 2.00, and then downgrade to 1.5, and from there load a utility to select what firmware to use on any given bootup.

Can anyone with a PSP tell me:

1) Will I need a USB cable (the kind the PSP needs; I know what it is but don't have one) for this, or can I make due with wireless (I have a wireless router that my PSP can communicate with)?

2) How big of a MemCard should I have for this? I suspect the 32MB one that I have with the PSP is simply not big enough...

Again, thanks in advance.

1) If you're gonna be using the PSP for what I think you'll be using it for, you're going to want a USB cable. File transfer should be faster with a USB connection, but I might be wrong. Maybe the transfer will go fast if your computer is on the same wireless connection [?] Idunno, I've never messed with the WiFi capabilities.

2) I have a 512 stick and it's not enough for me. I like to have movies, mp3s, and games and emulators on my memory stick [you know, the uncopyrighted, legal kind?], and some games alone won't even fit on the memory stick. Sure, I could delete stuff from my memory stick every time I go out, but that would be a hassle. I'd suggest a 2gb stick if you can get it, otherwise go with the 1gb.

the bigger the memory card the better. trust me, it can never be too big. some games dont even fit on a 1 gig, so id go for the 2 gig if i were you. if theyre on sale u can find one for around 60 bucks.

and ur also gonna want a usb cable. i forgot what its called, but u see what type of plug it needs right on top, so it shouldnt be a problem finding one. they're quite popular

Yeah, either a Mini B USB cable, or a MSDuo card reader (my laptop has a reader built-in, so I just swap out the stick instead of hooking up the PSP to the computer)

If you want emulators or videos, you're gonna want a 1GB minimum stick, a 512MB at the bare minimum. If you just wanna store pictures and some music here and there, you can get away with smaller storage. I'd keep the 32MB stick for all your gamesaves, unless you have Wipeout (with the extra downloadable tracks).

Memory Stick Duo prices are at a freefall, so unless you need a large stick now, I'd hold off on buying a bunch at a time because they'll be a lot cheaper by the end of the year.

Bah, all that downgrading and re-upgrading and shit looks like too much work. Screw it. I just wanna play the Megaman games dammit  Done. 2.7. No looking back.

However, now is a very bad time for me to notice a discolored (not a dead, but discolored) pixel on my screen. FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK.

EDIT - then again, I only notice it when the screen is black. So... meh.
Oh, and again thanks y'all for the responses. It is much obliged.
