 I know 6'6 black guy skateboarding - first I took on DDR *take that 25 pound philipino's!* Now I want to take on skateboarding. I've wanted to do it for a real long time but my 'blackness' had quarrels with it - however in my current situation I need some kind of stress relief so I don't care what people think anymore. I'm not looking into doing tricks - thats not my intrest - I just want to ride like I would a bike. However I don't know the first thing abuot even securing a board folks I know mentioned stuff like trucks etc but I wa a bit at a loss as to what they wretalking about. Any and all help would be appreciated.

As far as the whole skateboarding thing goes, PLENTY of black people skate. For a good 3 years I was on my board everyday all day(before the whole tony hawk craze and all the white kids with spikey hair officially took over). I stopped because I was getting more involved with tournaments. Man...I would definetly be sponsored by now if I hadn't stopped. Oh the possibilities.

Most of my skateboarder friends that I hang out with are black. Not a big deal. Its fun, and statistically black people are "better" at it, except when it comes to pools and ramps. Of course that is statistics, check out Darren Jenkins and Steve steadham for contradiction to that.
Anyway, You may want to get a wider board at first if you are bigger, like around 7.75 or 8 inches. Independant trucks are really good for strength, too, and they won't break on you. As far as wheels and bearings and stuff, its all personal preference.

It's strange, I've been wanting to get back into as well. I started back (funnily enough) when I was 12, after I watched a Rodney Mullen video, you know the kind, where he does all this crazy shit and starts going faster in primo than I can go normally, so I got a board, but stopped doing it after I destroyed my shin on a grind rail about 3 months in.

first off please tell me that this has nothing to do with the new lupe song cause that would just be lame...
the bigger you are the bigger board you need im 6'1 and about 180 to 190 so i ride a 32 x 8
anything world industries makes is a good board imo
if youve got the money premium parts are worth it, good bearings, wheels, and trucks will ride better and longer.
ive broken many trucks but ive never broken grind king so ... i recommend GK.
wheels??? hmmm no big ifferences between them but i prefer spitfire.
i dont know what bearings are hot right now but bones are overrated dont do it , while they may be hella fast they break easily( they break from intense skating though so if youre just riding then they might be a ok ... but they are quick!!!)
take care of your bearings (ie clean and oil them) and they will be good to you.
try buying from beach plus they have good prices and quick shipping just google it im lazy
also its perfectly natural for black dudes to skate a lot of skaters tag in my area and of course graffiti is and element of hip hop sooooo.....skate on my friend

I only call dark skinned people born in america black people because offically there not born in africa and for some its darn near impossible to trace there roots back to africa. I actually hadn't listening to the lupe thing mosre than once since the bootleg first hit so no it has nothing to do with that - actually Murs got me more than anything. It seems so frowned upon its sorta like that guy whos' gay around anti-gay friends - makes it kinda weird. I mean (1) I'm black, (2) I'm not young or rebelious in the slightest, (3) I'm really big - so I mean come on its real easy to push it to the side.
But I look at it like this - work has changed my hours to 10pm to 6am so I'm awake when most folks are asleep or at work themselves. This leaves me with little to no chance to unwind with people. So I have this constant moutain of frustration and feeling of wanting solitude to get the frustration out. I can work on music but I focus so hard on it that if things aren't perfect it just generates more frustration. City of Heroes requires other peopel to be on. I'm tired of whooping the computer in Tekken, driving cost way too much these days, because of my size bikes and I don't agree *my height leaves me needing professional style bikes and the seats for those aren't designed for someone of my weight - so I'm basically looking for an outlet of some sort, so while sitting there it popped in my head - I had tossed the idea away in college since I went to a HSBC - but I'm in a prodominatnly white neighborhood - no one would care. I'm not trying to do tricks - I will need to do hops for getting around but I wouldn't consider that a trick in the 'skateboarding sine of the word'. Just going out for rides to let tension off ya know - especially since boxing never panned out...

Hop = Ollie :)
So, do you want advice on what parts you want? How to get started?
If you're having a tough time staying on the board, find a handrail and just balance yourself while holding onto it. Then find some cement that is parallel to some grass and ride next to it, so if you fall.. you'll fall into some soft grass :P Then start practicing riding off curbs and driveways when you feel confident.
BTW to ollie put your front foot in the middle of the board and your back foot on the tail. Snap down on your back foot and then slide your front foot up to nose (Or where the 4 screws are at). Practice on some grass, so you don't bail on cement.
Anyways, have fun :)

Just keep in mind that learning to skate takes a lot of time and patience and you will get hurt.
Don't skate mongo footed (one foot on the back of the board) because you have a greater chance of blowing out your knee. Also, go to a skate shop for a board. You don't need anything fancy but it shouldn't be hard to find a decently priced blank complete. If you only want to ride around a long board might be better.

Wow, this story sounds so familiar its almost uncanny. I myself am black (5'10, not 6'6 though) and didn't start skating until I was 23 (I'm 24 now). And I, like yourself didn't do it to learn tricks or be great at it either. I just wanted to ride and get to class (I was in college at the time and just graduated this past December). Anyway, one of my roomates had a board at the time and he NEVER rode it. One day I was running late to class and I needed to get there quick, so I snatched that shit up and literally learned how to ride a skateboard in the span of fifteen minutes. I busted my ass five times or so, twice in front of hundreds of students on one of the busiest parts of campus... But I got to class on time.
The thing that I think helped me out the most was the fact that I would observe the way other skateboarders rode their boards around campus. Stuff like their stance, how they shifted their weight to the left, right, or back of their boards to determine how sharp a turn they would make, how they stopped, etc, etc. That shit really helped. So my best advice to you is just to go out and look at how other people skate. And fuck the haters and ignorant peoples that try to categorize and stereotype you. Its not about them. Its about you trying out something that you might really like.

My friend Doug has this motorized longboard that does the trick for me, though. It's got this controller on a wire that speeds it down the street, and it's big enough for me to stand on comfortably (Size 17 shoes, that's no mean feat). I used to surf, so I have no problem maneuvering it or anything. It feels like surfing down the sidewalk, so effing cool.

I feel yah brah, i'm also black and I skate, even though i go to a predominatley rich white kid's high school no one really cares, some mexican ppl skate, some black ppl skate, no one really cares that much.
Been skating since about 98, so it's like 8 years or so for me, skating is fun it's time consuming, can become frustrating if you try to hard.
If you need to get a set up go to your local skateshop and they will hook you up and tell you what you need, just get a blank, ventures are good, all trucks are pretty good. wheels, just get blanks, bearings if up to you, i would get the knock ofs for 15 bucks, but i seen diamonds, that's right diamond bearings go on ebay for 20 BIN, mind you retail is 60.
sometimes they will have pre made complete decks for like 20-30~ cheaper so see if one othose works better. but definetly bring a bill if you want a decent set up, they should be pretty cool.
You don't neccesarily have to get a wider board, it all depends how comfortable you are standing on diff sized boards, although the dudes at the shop will prob say 7.5-8, just stand on diff decks till you feel what's right.
Might want to get your trucks a bit loos cuz looser= easyier to turn.
all decks are pretty much the same, just a get a blank with good pop.
that's pretty much it, after you get your deck just go out and skate!, oh u might want to get some candles, regular candles like the ones you light, they make good for wax to use on curbs and rails so you slide easier.
that's it!!! have fun!
oh n btw kick push is a dope song, not just cuz its about skating, but because it's something different from rapping about grillz n whack ass shit:rofl: , so i give props to him for that.

I used to cruise on a longish board when I was in college to get to class. I highly recommend it. A few recommendations:
Get a slightly longer and wider board if you can. At first, you can a get a cheap blank at a skate shop.
Get bigger and softer wheels than the normal shortboarders do. The wheels they use are too slow if you're just cruising. I would get wheels that are 60-65 mm diameter, with a durometer (a measure of wheel hardness, harder is higher) of 80A-95A.
If you really want a longboard, Randal II trucks are among the best for longer boards. Their also not more expensive.

I used to skate back in the day. I got a board but i never ride it. My suggestions would be a wide board, GK trucks, and larger sized wheels. not longboard wheels but just a little bigger and softer than usual. If i had friends to skate with i'd probably do it more often.

It really pisses me off how critical some blacks are about other blacks. To many of them, your blackness level equates to what you listen to, how you talk, and what you wear. To them, what you as a person believe in doesn't matter.

I have an ex's skateboard, I should donate to the cause.
Don't skate mongo footed (one foot on the back of the board) because you have a greater chance of blowing out your knee.
Explain pls. I've skated 'mongo' since I started and haven't had a knee problem. I do admit setting up for tricks requires a little bit earlier prep though.
I used to ride bikes too, that was a lot of fun, but I was smaller at the time, and lugging around 35+ lbs wasn't the greastest thing I did. You fall harder, but you can catch major air, and the possibilites are greater(dirt, street, park).

Think what you will - Shade is right it depends on where you live and what kind of folks you hang around. Its REAL REAL REAL easy to say just do whatever you want - but its not for everyone. For me - my insecurity isn't 'JUST' cause I'm black I don't deny its a factor - but its also my age and size - frequent factors in decescions I make - my size alone makes things typically more expensive and akward - I have no CLUE how my size will affect not only my balance but the type of board I get.
As for help - I've read some great responses to what I need.
So I guess here is some of the meat and potatoes I'm trying to gather - I've done some searching via google and links people ahve sent me/posted...
Most folks seem to be recommending long boards - what is the I guess performance/key difference? How does it change my ride?
I wear size 17 kicks myself so I figured the wider the board the better - does this screw up making sharp turns? I'm still a little miffed with the 'wheel stiffness' thing as well.
-:bluu:
UltraScrub
07-14-2006, 08:31 AM
The difference is that if you aren't going to do tricks, longboard equipment gives you more choices in changing how your ride handles. Randal II Trucks for example are not really appropriate for a shortboard (there is of course nothing that stops you from doing it, but it isn't "typical"). Longboarders also usually ride with the trucks looser so that they can make a sharper turn to compensate for the longer wheelbase. So you'll lean over more when riding a longboard. Also, a longer board will flex more and absorb some of the road shock.
Wheel Stiffness: think of it somewhat like car tires. Bigger, softer wheels absorb bumps better, but too soft or too big and it takes more energy to get them rolling. The 97A-101A wheels that are usually on a shortboard excel on really smooth concrete (good skatepark surface), but they make for a bumpy ride on less than perfect asphalt.

As a fellow skater, really size and color don't matter. Skating is fun, yes there is risk of injury but as there is with living life at all. If you learn tricks it's even better cause you can just go to a spot and hang there for a while sometimes there'll be people already there or you'll just skate out your stresses. When I skate I forget everything about the day, problems, etc. Go to a skateshop get a board and some good shoes. Ask the seller to show you how to tighten and loosen your trucks it'll help with balance.

ive been longboarding and skateboarding both were fun. you'll have an easier time with longboarding since you kinda just flow with it, and yea i have big feet (12) and its a lot easier to work with the longboard at first. wheel stiffness i wouldn't worry about, id just get the median. and do some research online where to buy shit, or you might end up paying a lot more then you have too. beleive it or not, being big and skateboarding can have it's advantadges too, don't worry about judgment/sterotypes etc....you do what you wanna do and have fun mang.

I picked up my first complete back in January, so I'm all for the Black skater thing. I haven't actually done much skating since I picked the shit up though. I think I'm really gonna get nice now.
If you're gonna be at the next C3 I can let you get a feel for my board (believe me, I tried really hard to phrase that, and that's the least gay I could make that sound) to see what kind you need.
You are pretty big though. Those falls won't be pretty.

 you tried I laughed then I tried of a way and damn that is the best way to say it lol
Yeah some of my other folks from CoH were tellin me to watch where I buy the board too I had asked 'Rave' if Dick's would be better than a shop and she laughed my ass off - Dick's would rape me *good to know cause their boards were mad ezpensive* - and money IS a thing right now. The prices I've seen so fdar were for complete packages and those seemed to hover around 100 bux - is it better to go this way starting out - or should I be looking at getting a board put together?

can't help but think that you're being influenced by lupe fiasco, pharrell (who can't even skate but is all about it, just for the record) or his "ice cream skate team" which is mostly black dudes.
whether you are or you're not, if you're into it just do your thing, man. i'm not one of those "anti-black skateboarding celebs that are creating a trend" types. i'll admit that it is strange going to west philly and seeing dudes in fitted caps and bape jackets riding on skateboards, but it's just popular now because of the people already mentioned. kareem campbell was one of my favorite skaters in the mid 90's and he just happened to be black.
just go to your local skate shop and chat with the dudes there. they should be able to tell you what you want to know.
It really pisses me off how critical some blacks are about other blacks. To many of them, your blackness level equates to what you listen to, how you talk, and what you wear. To them, what you as a person believe in doesn't matter.
blacks are most racist to their own people. i dont even know if racist is the right word but thats all i can think of..they disregard anything out of the norm of our own culture. which is sad. and made me miss out of alot of stuff early in life.
