Okay, it may be a bit late in the season, but I need to make sure Utah Street Fighter is alive and well! Everyone who's still around, reply and let me know what's up!

On to the topic at hand...like I just said, I know it's a bit late, but do you guys want a pre-Evo battle? If so, tell me what kind of lineup you want to see there. I'm sure I can make it happen quickly since LFU is ***much*** larger than it was at last year's tournaments, I just need to know there will be a turnout despite the short notice.

The biggest question is, what do you want for Street Fighter II if we do this event, and that question will be reflected in the poll.

well, when?

DarkCatalyst

Most likely, the Saturday before Evo Final. So that'd be the 12th?

Okay, that didn't go so well, and it's looking like I can't get tournaments to happen until late September now, after LFU gets established in its new/old digs. However, when I bring back the local tournament scene again, I want it to become a more regular thing. This means monthly, if not bi- or tri-weekly events. The idea is to foster local competition and not have guys slip through the cracks via long waits between tourneys (ie: Joey Guerts, Stephen Mace, etc). I've talked to Scott McUne, and he is on board, at least after he moves the store. I have come up with a number of ideas to grow the community around here. Unfortunately, I can't put any of them into action outside Logan for the time being.

-"A Day of Old-School." The idea is to run the late September tournament with a lineup of HF/A2/MK2. Relax guys, I'm not taking MK seriously. I just realize that by reaching out to the MK players, we'll pull some more Street Fighter players out of the mix. Depending on how that goes, I'll do it again once MK Armageddon comes out so we can run Ultimate MK3 (I should have my own cabinet by then, but no way am I lugging that thing out to the mall), which should get a good following by then thanks to Xbox Live Arcade. The overall game lineup may seem underwhelming, but I urge everyone who wants to support the Utah scene to show up, because it'll get a different crowd, and we need to impress and keep those guys around all the same.

-Regular tournaments. I touched on this at the start. Once I start rolling out tournaments again, I don't want to have to stop. There will be no "off-season" in Utah. We're not going to see a good player come to one of our tournaments and drop off the earth by the time we get to our next one. That shit's killing us. It's keeping us from bringing in new players and sustaining independent communities within the state. Don't get me wrong - it's great that we can bring the whole state's top players together whenever we do put up a tournament, and we'll at least have to keep it up for a little while longer, but eventually we're going to have to have regular shit going on in Logan, Ogden, SLC, Provo, Brigham City, etc. If you guys can help me pull this off in Logan, I'll do everything in my power to return the favor, since my current employer has set a personal goal for me to be driving as of Halloween, and that takes me to my next point...

-We are going to motherfucking Evo next year, I don't care if I have to stuff players in a U-Haul to make it happen. Shit, rent a generator, throw a table and a TV in there, and run rotation play all the way to fucking Vegas. We're god damn good enough to be at Evo, and this logistical bullshit has to stop. Unless something goes terribly wrong with my getting a drivers license, however many Team Utah players need rides, I will take them to Evo my fucking self. As long as we inform any true newcomers we get about what exactly Evo is and what it means, they'd know they really have something to shoot for, which would help the turnout at our own smaller events leading up to the big one.

And to close the message, here is, to the best of my knowledge, Team Utah's roster (I'm going by my tournament signup sheets and old contact info that I have on hand). If anyone can track down the MIA players or point out other Utah players, it would be much appreciated.

evo was off the fuckin hook this year as it was last year and years past! every damn year everyone can talk about making their way there, but if people dont make plans and just get up and go then it's never gonna happen. props to spence devine for doing a good job against some great players, also to dan silver for doing the same, especially on a stick he wasn't familiar with! evo is the shit!

as far as general comp goes we play in SLC area regularly, lets get some stuff going guys, especially since we had a good showing at evo - cvs2 and third strike looking pretty damn good guys!

Whoa! I knew you guys were there ("and possibly Samson" -Nate), but Spence Devine and Dan Silver showed up? We're on our way, boys. :D

How about an Evo log, Jacob? :)

*updating Team Utah roster now*

Also, for a (preferrably very) short-term goal, let's try and get everyone on that roster posting here at SRK. I'll tell Tony tomorrow or whenever I can get in touch with him again. He should be back in Utah now that school starts tomorrow.

Okay, here's what I've thrown together in the way of a very tentative Logan tournament schedule (very tentative because I haven't talked to Scott yet, and new releases could also come along that change everything).

I'm also going to do one free tournament each tourney day. This is to serve a number of purposes, most notably bringing in new players and testing the competitive viability of new releases before money gets involved (in cases where there is potential for said viability). I will use * to mark the free tournaments on the schedule.

Again, keep in mind that these dates and lists are far from official, and only represent the best-case scenario between my work schedule and what Scott can make work.

9/23/06: Return to the Cache Valley Scene, A Day of Old-School
*Mortal Kombat II
Street Fighter II` Hyper Fighting
Street Fighter Alpha 2

10/14/06
*The King of Fighters 2006
Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike
Tekken 5

11/4/06
*SoulCalibur III
Hyper Street Fighter II: The Anniversary Edition
Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike

11/25/06
*Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (Evaluation after this event. MK must feed the other tourneys to be kept around beyond this point.)
Tekken 5
Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike

12/16/06: Goodbye 2006 (most likely a house tourney)
TBA (most well-received free-tourney game from the previous events)
Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike
Street Fighter II` Hyper Fighting
Hyper Street Fighter II: The Anniversary Edition
Tekken 5

1/5/07: Hello 2007, Back To LFU
*TBA (If 9/23 MK2 and 11/25 UMK3 yield good results, then either UMK3 or MKA.)
Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike
Tekken 5

Things I'm working on...
-Setting my PS2 up for import gaming. I'd love it if we could get stuff going like KOF NeoWave (without bringing my Xbox), KOFXI, Garou, Melty Blood, SS Tenkaichi Kenkyakuden, GGXX Slash, etc.
-Getting a PS2 copy of Capcom vs SNK 2 so we can start running that again. We haven't done CvS2 since Regenesis, so we're way overdue on that.
-Getting my drivers license so I can start attending Ogden and SLC tournaments whenever they happen. I don't want you guys thinking I'm not grateful for everything you've all done for the Logan scene, I'll return the favor as quickly as I am able.

Yeah, man. I had the top PacNorth T5 ranking going into Evo weekend last year. Utah, along with Team Portland members who attended our tournaments, dominated the 1-6 spots in the division that weekend. Ricky Ortiz had 7th.

As for Utah County, I know we have a presence there, or did...is PTC Tilt still there?

Don't know what's going on at PTC, I just know Prof D used to play there with some of his boys. Apparently there's a group playing a lot in SLC (mentioned earlier in this thread), and I'm getting some stuff together in Logan if you're up for the drive. I'm aiming to have tri-weekly Logan tournaments by the end of September.

Well, welcome to Utah, such as it is. We're pretty thinned-out but we still have a good player population overall.

As for Logan tournaments, look at it this way...we're doing a free tournament and two cash-pot tournaments every time we hold an event. For $10 and some gas money, you can take in three tournaments and just some overall good times with other local players.

Don't worry about not being a competitive player, either. Most of us enter tournaments for games we're not even that good at. Just an excuse to get Team Utah together for a day of gaming with more/better players than we usually have access to.

I'll run CvS2 as soon as I get a PS2 copy. I like the game, personally, but I only run tourneys on PS2 for a number of reasons (most of which fairly obvious). I have copies of both MvC2 and CvS2 for Dreamcast, but pretty sure it'd be harder to find players to bring Dreamcast controllers/sticks around here than PS2. And there's no way I could transport my own DC sticks (much less find a place to set them up at LFU).

As for Marvel in particular...counting you (if you play), we have maybe 4-6 decent Marvel players in the state. I know the Bleyls rock Marvel, and we just take for granted that Ernie's good at any game he touches. Not sure who plays beyond them. Sorry bro.

Oh, and Logan's up by the Idaho border, less than 30 min out. Great place to be if you want booze on a Sunday. Or a lottery ticket. Just get up to Franklin and go nuts. :wasted:

Jacob: Possibly in early 07, but it's not looking good. If you're thinking about importing, go right ahead.

JF: Well, don't look for good arcades in Logan, just a few solid players and some tournament-friendly game stores. You're closer to SLC than Logan, so you might see what's going on at Crossroads Tilt or Gateway. There's also Newgate Cyberstation in Ogden if you want Namco stuff. I think they have Dark Resurrection.

to Jizzz_frame:

PTC really isn't that bad, it's just not very Capcom-friendly. I went there this afternoon and played a little T5.1, plus walked past KOF XI, SC2, MvC2, and TTT (for tournament fighters.)

True, there isn't any CvS2, but I only knew of one CvS2 machine in the entire state and that was in SLC at the now-defunct Crossroads Tilt, where almost no one played it anyway.

If you're into less-tourney-worthy fighters, there's MSH vs SF, MvC1, SF3:NG, SvC, and T4. Not bad, considering it IS Utah.

Anyway, I'm not sure if he's still there, but a guy named Damon may still be the manager there. He held a few T5 tournaments around a year ago that brought out around 10 people or so (including me) but it died out soon after it started. He didn't run the tournaments properly, which may be why it died so quickly. But at least it was something.

One arcade option in Utah Valley would be a place called The Ozz in Provo, at around 200 West and 500 North. I used to go there to play some cheap TTT a couple years ago (.25/game). Management has changed since then, though, and I have no idea what games they have there now.

Another place to check would be the Nickelcade on State Street in Orem. There's the standard entry fee, but every game there is cheap. Again, I haven't been there for a while, but there may be a few gems there worth checking.

To everyone:

Good to see the Bleyl's and Ernie still exist. :) I still have school (18 more credits until I graduate) but I've been hitting the emulated ST pretty hard. If anyone can figure out how to play it online on MAME or whatever, tell me how to set it up and I'll play you...if you're still awake at 1am. That's about the only time I have to get my game on nowadays. I've been practicing some N. Ken and Guile. Good times.

I've got a digital camcorder for all Logan tournaments now.

I've also got a new/sealed blackbox Tekken 5 for anyone who feels like giving me a PS2 version of Capcom vs SNK 2 in good condition (meaning box/cover/manual included and no noteworthy scratches on the disc). If that's not enough, I'll also pay your entry fees for one of my upcoming LFU events. Best offer I can make for those who want CvS2 events in Logan. Looked around tonight, and the only copy I could find was disc only at EB for $30. Fuck that shit.

danatorp: i know that ptc has things like mvc2. but you cant really play mvc2 when the screen is messed up and you dont have the characters unlocked. ttt is 50cents to play and has concave buttons. i mean, im not trying to hate, but the only thing going for it is 5.1 which is outdated. but a 10 people tournament is not bad. those can be fun too.

i have been to ozz to play pool. do they have anything besides ttt? and how is the machine?

i went to nicklecade a couple years ago, and it didnt look like they had too many fighters. but i dont know.

if there are any more tournaments let me know or if you are planning on going to one of the places we can meet up or something. im really bad though

DanaTorp
09-06-2006, 01:13 AM
Eh, it's all good. I'm not too good at T5 anymore, either. At the moment, I'm more into ST than anything.

Maybe one of these weekends we can hook up with the Bleyls and their crew in SLC, get something going with them. I still don't have a ton of time, what with UVSC, wife, kid, full-time job, excuse, excuse......

But if something in SLC happens, I'll do my best to be there. Just give me enough notice. If it's anything but old-school SF or T5, I'm going to look hella bad, though, just so everyone knows.

crossroads does not have cvs2 anymore, infact i dont even think crossroads has a tilt anymore. this place down by the Ecenter has a cvs2 machine but its always broke and nobody ever plays there. we usually do get togethers at our(the bleyls) house we are pretty flexable and always down for whatever just contact me at quarter_ace44@yahoo.com and we'll get something together for sure

Logan is somewhat inactive right now. It's just myself and Tony, and possibly a few guys I met in college (but couldn't get ahold of on really short notice). To make matters worse, I'm working Saturdays now, but could potentially get one off in the event of a tournament or something. I'm still trying to work out how to go about that. Right now I'm thinking about having regular tournaments on a strange day like Sunday or Monday, with larger events every couple months on a Saturday.

We have a tournament (VF5/HF/DOA4/STHD-if-available) lined up for 1/12 at LFU (reg: noon, start: 1 pm). Scott's giving us free reign of the arcade so we have a lot of great setup options. It's already posted at the tournament board over at VFDC (http://www.virtuafighter.com/) and added a bulletin at the MySpace mentioned in the previous post.
