My opinion is The Black Eyed Peas.
When they first came out, I loved them. They were a throwback to A Tribe Called Quest kinda funk. I listen to them now and am ashamed to have ever been a fan. Anyone agree (or disagree) or have a sellout of their own?

50 cent
wasn't his first "big" song dissing everyone who was popular in the industry, the same people he hangs out with now?

Ma$e by far
His early career was notable
His reasons for leaving was respectable...until he called rap the devil
His return left plenty confused as shit
And his gangsta heel turn was just wack...dude gets no props

There is a differance between rap and mainstream hip hop music, its like me calling Lynyrd Skynyrd metal.

50 only made that track to get attention by getting at anyone he felt was someone worthwile in the industry, he never meant anything personally out of it. In a way it was probably insulting to NOT be on that track lol.
bill_rizer
07-27-2006, 07:20 PM
What makes me laugh about 50 is that back then he was dissin people like ja rule for making pop rap tunes, so what did that nigga go and do? candy shop and other lame ass pop rap tunes lol its sad to see what he became the very thing he dissed.
The Black Eyed Peas are the same I remember a beat they did dissing commercial hip hop I cant remember the name of it but the video was like a crazy cheap TV ad for hip hop.
However look at them now to me they anit even rap anymore, I guess when the big money comes it changes people, I guess nobody listened to Wu all those years ago with C.R.E.A.M.
Rap is in a stale state at the moment anyway, well from 2002, infact 90s hip hop crushes anything that comes out now, I dont listen to hip hop half as much now, to me a beat is shit if people can only remember the chorus ala candy shop, something like protect ya neck has lyrics you remember because they are just sick.

Nobody, I repeat NOBODY sold out like BEP! What the hell...Joints and Jams to My Humps...God Damnit...
i seriously believe fergi is like some faustian deal incarnate(lol good vs evil reference)....seriously the minute she joined them..they sold out. and became soooo rediculously popular..and all they added..was a female who cant actually sing and she's not that good looking. so it makes no sense why they got so popular.
Remy Martin
07-27-2006, 07:54 PM
yes i completely agree, in fact i cant think of a worse sell out in any genre... i actually bought behind the front when it came out in the late 90's. upon listening to fergie's solo single its painfully apparent that she ruined the group... not like BEP were spectacular by any means, its just that they seemed a little more "real" before she came along.
seriously has anyone heard london bridge ??? its the worst shit out by far

Cash rules everything around me Cream get the money Dolla Dolla billzz yall.....
my opinion the biggest sell out who actually turned the rap game around was probably eminem.
he used to be mad dope in the underground scene then he got signed. 100% all hate on the underground game came about. if it wasnt for Shady though there probably wouldnt even be a 50-cent / G-Unit or D-12. so his selling out was pretty dramatic to the rap game..

i dont think shady sold out but became more careful. he couldnt be the angry rapper who didnt give a fuck anymore. he eventually became his daughters sole provider..without him she has nothing. he cant be pissing off every rapper and the diff homosexual groups without expecting a backlash.
i think he just thought about his future and couldnt be what he once was.

Before he was the angry rapper he was the dope flowing lyricist with crazy punchlines that made good songs. I dont think he sold out when he became the angry rapper, but if you compare eminem on Infinite to anything he does today, it might make you want to cry.
BEP is the most notable group I could think of. Its quite sickening to think that a dope group of bboys turned rappers became more pop then pop. If you went back in time and showed the old BEP a tape of there new stuff they would probably kill themselves.

Will.I.Am: Calling Black Eyed Peas "Hip-Hop" is an Insult
http://www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf/article/will.i.am%20dont%20call%20us%20hip-hop_1002233
THE BLACK EYED PEAS frontman WILL.I.AM is keen to distance his band from hip-hop, because the genre's music is "angry" and "negative". The LET'S GET IT STARTED hitmaker admits the group started out as a hip-hop act but he now wants nothing to do with the rap scene. He says, "When you compare it to today's standards of what hip-hop is... don't even call it that, 'cos that's, like, an insult. "Today's hip-hop is just angry, negative music that just makes black people look bad."

Rap DID die years ago IMO, the underground scene is where hip hop is truly at, usually when i say rap i refer to mainstream stuff, jeezy, chingy, dipstick, etc.
Sweet Tooth
07-28-2006, 12:48 AM
Not all mainstream rap is bad.
For example: I love Jeezy. he might not be the best rapper but his songs are good. His album can be played from beggining to end with me not skipping songs. I just think he makes good MUSIC.
That's what I think most heads forget, its more about the music and not having the dopest lyrics.

You sound like one of them peps that dont even listen to the lyrics, where do you think battle rap comes from? the beats lol ? its about how you can tear up a track up with your lyrics.
Put BEP on Wu tangs "Forever" and see if it still sounds tight.

I love the "it's not hiphop it's rap so it doesn't count!" arguments. You can't change definitions to fit your particular tastes or whims. Get over it.
I also love the "rap is dead" arguments. It's what, thirty years old? There are still hundreds of new artists out there, many of whom you may not know existed. New subgenres are popping up by the moment, it seems. Doesn't sound dead to me. Maybe its presence in the mainstream isn't what you want it to be. If you really care that much about hiphop, try listening to a little something off the beaten path, or try giving something more mainstream a closer listen.

Akon, this is really just hate on my part but bear with me. And I know half the niggas in this thread are like wtf Akon?!?!?, I saw that cunt one summer on TRL (yes i was watching that shit) when i was in like 10th/11th grade and he was on there. Nobody knew how the fuck he was, and he was just talking about his approach to rap and how he'll never be gangsta rapper, he's more about the music, his family is all about music, and he repeated that he'll never do anything relative to gangsta rap....so i hear nothin about this nigga for a few years then out of fucking nowhere I hear "Locked Up." I was fucking heated, no in the way like i felt like he betrayed me or something, that ug-mug-ass-nigga just lied to me and tries to be a east coast version of Nate Dogg.....fuck outta here with that, so I vote for akon /hate

rap = hip-hop's music, if you're still trying to make that rap vs. hip-hop argument you need stfu bcuz you're obviously stupid and out of touch.
biggest sell out is flava flav, how you gonna go from being in public enemy to the surreal life and becoming a fucking dancing monkey for white america.
"how to rob" was not a real diss record, that should be obvious by him having lines for biggie altho big was dead when that shit came out. 50 has been pretty consistent in his "i'll do whatever the fuck i want...as long as dre & em are in my corner" mentality so i wouldn't call him a sellout.
em evolved as an artist. if he was still rhyming solely on that horrorcore shit now he'd be dismissed as a gimmick.
BEP sold out like a motherfucker, now they're just straight up pop.

Sisco was a bitch to begin with Im glad he Ruined himself.
From day one I knew beyonce was just using DC as a front to further her career, why you think she got those original 2 memebers booted out, because they were not happy with her being the lead singer all the time.
Come on man its her dad running things they set that shit up from the start.
Now shes dun and dusted the rest of them and gone on to be in a couple of movies etc, while the others will be just forgotten.
Just like black people always thinking about themselves, once we get to the top, everyone else can just be tossed away.
Dam master p has a show on nic? lol well no limit wasnt really going to last long so he made his cash and moved on.

John Cena.
1.john cena was rapping before wrestling
2.wrestling gave him an avenue to show his freestyle skills which he does have
3.i never saw one bad review for his cd he put out..it had that underground flavor. and it wasnt like he tried to hire big stars or ex stars to be on it. it was him bumpy and his cousin.

no selling out is going back on your original principles that got you to the place you are and noticed. and turning your back on your orginal fans.
ie. 50's first album was for everyone. second cd was clearly for the suburbs and girls...pop songs on every song. when he heard all the white kids yelling g unit on every block he knew who his true audience was.
Remy Martin
07-28-2006, 12:22 PM
selling out isnt getting popular and making tons of money, it is changing to do so. BEP went through a drastic change to get were theyre at and it absolutely had to go against what they originally stood for( assumption here). with that being said fuck musical integrity i would sell out in a heart beat if the riches were guaranteed.
what is this selling out thing? is selling out becoming popular and making tons of money? why is this a crime?

If a rapper goes mainstream it doesn't really bother me cuz I know he is just adjusting to what people listen to at that point in time...BUT when he/she completely sells out and forgets about the tru fans that were down with him/her from day ONE then it pisses me off.(i.e.) bep...great underground group in the past but when they put fergiee in the mix then it went pop and it stayed there..50 cent..he went from wanksta to candy shop(he said he would never go pop, haha what do you call that hardcore pop) and then last but not least Nelly...his first cd(Nellyville) was a great cd but as time past he started SINGING hooks for pop stars..if anyone cares to differ please state your mind.

really? is that why she went back and recorded another DC album that basically assured michelle wouldn't turn into a florence ballard story. yeah really selfish, especially considering she could've made infinitely more money by just putting another solo album instead....yeah what a selfish whore she is.
a more apt statement would be 50 went from "in da club" to "disco inferno"/"candy shop"...yeah thats a huge departure for an artist to make.

I think maxx just explained this, its not that they made money or got a girl in their group its just they went from hiphop to pop music, I mean 50 still raps/rnb but those guys, naa full circle really I dont think anybody compares to them.
edit: i just caught up with this thread and wow, quite the stereotyping idiot you are bill_rizer. stop trying to project your own racial hatred on us, kthx.
I was going to Ignore your repsonse till you said that, what because I dont like when people look down on me because Im black, Im surposed to be happy like you? Ok you carry on like that If you want, I dont put myself in any sterotype circle or social group, I like what I like and thats that.
Also I never said once that I hate white people or any other race, Im not that Pathetic, 1 racist white person does not = whole of white people are racist, If I dont like someone it has nothing to do with their race, dont be so ridiculous.
yea..rap is not where it's at anymore...record label I THINK would rather have pop then rap musicians cuz rapper now a days only rap about the basic things (MONEY,CARS,BITCHES AND DRUGS)
I myself is a die hard rap luver i grew up on old skool/new skool rap and i will go def with rap
How did Beyonce use DC? Every single member (sans Latavia) has had very good albums, and good hits (Kelly: Stole and Delima, LeToya: Torn, Michelle...dunno...I don't listen to gospel but I know her albums have done well).
what do u guys think about ice cube? the nwa bad ass, gangsta as hell. now doing family movies. yea, yea.
stop watching the boondocks.
bill_rizer: ya its just bep sold out and added ferhi all at the same time. its almost which i can almost gurentee it was their labels idea. sumtin along the lines lets go pop and add a female to get more female attention to the group. Lets bring it more mainstream..its how i feel. and honestly can anyone say that doesnt make absolute sense?

I dont really know how well their albums sold in figures and that but, im not saying how succesfuly they were (clearly not as good as Beyonce) yea I know gospel is different, actually I had that album its really good.
When you think of DC You know who comes in your head first lol, I dunno just seemed to me Beyonce had always wanted to be a solo star hence she was always lead singer, the other girls just felt like back up to me.
Im not sayin Im right, nothing is written in stone and I can admit when Im wrong unlike some people, you could be very right in what your saying.
Yea maxx your probably right about BEP when that girl came they changed, I guess the label showed them they could be earning way more if they went pop, Im wondering if they thought it over first, well they made their choice.
Ice cube is more like a business man to me, he just used his brains and moved up levels, really from gangsta rap to hollywood actor is saying something, I dont remember Ice cube ever making some pop tune.
John Cena has Potential its just I think he has an image to up hold now, he cant go wild on the mic like he used to, his probably got some old ass CDs that are probably way better than the stuff on his album.
And yea I think he could of easily of got some bigger stars on his album, Its not like WWE has a problem Attracting big music stars, but it looks like he chose not too, which is cool.
remember when ice cube started family movies...gangasta rap was dead. 50 brought gangasta rap back into thje mainstream. and why should cube go back to that style of gloryfying violence just for money.
i respect the man. he got out when he could.

Co-sign, Ice Cube went from rapper to movie actor to actor/producer/writer to successful (?) production company owner. Hell if he raps now it is because he wants too, the same can't be said for most rappers a decade after their popularity dipped.

Eh, people change. New opportunities arise, they meet new people, get exposed to different influences (musically and socially), etc. It's not all because of the almighty dollar, though directly and indirectly that's a big factor.
However with that said, I gotta agree on BEP. Easily the first group I thought of when I saw the thread title even though I don't care too much about the selling out issue.

Umm. Nelly's first album was Country Grammar.
But yeah, BEP wins this thread.

You do know the difference between sterotyping and racism right?
I think your the one missing the point here, Im not trying to justify stereotyping its not something I like, that is what I have been trying to say.
I dont accept peoples stereotyping or else I wouldnt be making a fuss about it now would I.
As for my derogatory generalization about black people, yea perhaps it was wrong for me to say "black people" because saying that clearly you thought I meant every single black person on the planet, again for me to think one black person = the whole race would be stupid.
So in that respect ill give you your dues, I worded that wrong and if I offended you or anybody else Im sorry.
Iam a more complete person than Ive ever been in my life right now, I have changed alot from 5 years ago, hell five years ago my response would have been to just cuss you off lol, but that dont get anybody anywhere now does it.

I look at it this way. The target audience for hip hop is very young. It has been that way since NWA. Many of you might have forgotten that unlike rock, which usually shifts by decade, Hip hop tends to see major transistions every 5 years. Look at 85-90 90-95 and 95-00 and you will understand what I mean. If you need to put a face to the numbers, think Busta Rhymes.
Hip Hop does very little for me now. I am completely out of touch with what it is talking about. Me and everyone I knew from Bridgeport who wanted to do better for themselves left with little incident. At 24 most of it seems really silly to me. Things are not as bad as they were in the early 90's. Why are these suburban kids walking around talking about hustling. Why do I get robbed by three teenagers in $400 throwbacks each one with a gun?
At one time, rappers were just speaking their minds and telling their life stories. Now they are more or less just pimping out their own people. I have no ill will towards hip hop, as a teen it got me through a lot of shit but I cannot see how anyone with a drop of real life experience can take it seriously.
At times I wonder if any connections can be drawn between the music of the time and the fact that Black men advanced the least out of all other groups during the 90's economic boom.
Btw, Of course, I am talking about mainstream hip hop. Though I remember when you could just turn on the radio to hear good shit.

Who gives a fuck. Just listen to the fucking music, if you like it, keep listening, if you don't, stop. Why is it such a big fucking deal whether or not they make funny? That shit gets on my nerves. "Well, this band makes money and got popular, I hate them!" You can't get much more "High School" than that. If they change their sound, STOP FUCKING LISTENING. Almost all artists, even "omfg undaground" ones change their style, but people have their heads shoved too far up their own assholes to realize that this occurs GLOBALLY, and not just with popular bands.
Ignorance, immaturity, and flat out lack of brain power. Just as bad as the people who shop at Hot Topic because "that's what my friends who are like totally badasses are wearing" or the fat fucks eating aat Subway because some other previously fat fuck told you it'll make you lose weight.

The way I look it black people got the music and sports Industries locked down, you could also say in some respects media also, since those things are linked.
Outside thoughs industries Im not too sure where we stand, Its not like I here about a succesful black property seller or super nerd tycoon like bill gates or in the computer industry, Im sure their must be some just we dont here of them.
What Im getting at here is this boom you talk of really if your werent into hiphop/ or sports you would probably have missed out in some way.
I would like for younger black kids to think that their are other ways to be successful in life without having to be a rapper etc.
I think it was in issue of King where whats his name fredric the comedian? was going onabout how its harder for a black comedians to make it these days, compared to the 80s and early 90s.
He was also going on about how he rates guys like Ice cube and jayz.
I gota agree with him on that even though nas>jayz  but jayz and Ice cube set up their own production companies and what not, they didnt rely on rap, they used what money they made from that and took it further.
Im pretty sure they hired mostly black people along the way also.
Yea your right mainstream hip hop was pretty dam good in the 90s, lol I remember I would always stay up late to watch mtv raps, good old days.

The general conscensus (sp?) of this thread is being popular does not make you a sell out. Going back on your ideals or early style in exchange for money, does. I haven't listened to Linkin Park in years aside from the Jay-Z single. Having not heard the album I don't know if it's fair to call them sellouts, cuz' they may have just figured working with Jay-Z would give them more hip-hop respect.
Anywho, while BEP does take the cake I'd like to nominate Snoop Dogg to this list. Hardcore gansta rapper, turned pop, turned actor, turned comedian, turned car maker, turned golfer, turned pop once more. Granted Snoop gets and deserves more respect them someone like 50.

Will Snoop is a very dynamic kinda guy. And I will admit I'ma huge Snoop fan. But u can't except him to costantly make the same music. I'll admit I'm tired of seein hi mwith Pharrell and all. I dont think they are the best duo musically. And alot of people complain about Doggystyle was his only good album. Um yeah, will if he had 8 more Doggystyle albums u still wouldn't like him. Nobody wants the same shit over and over. Plus, he was 18-19 when he made Doggystyle. And though I like the album, I think it's over-rated. Sounds too much like The Chronic to me. I mean he has a pretty impressive resume, he's worked with Dr. Dre, 2pac, No Limit, E-40, Puffy, Ice Cube, WC, Nelly, Lil Jon, The Neptunes (yes I know some of those artists suck) but what I'm saying is he has so much variety. I will admit I didnt really like R&G. Snoop just has so much char. and yeah he has matured. He's done beefin with Suge and everyone. Plus, he tryin to reunite the westcoast by makin a new record label, bringin Tha Dogg Pound back, introducing nw groups Warzone & Western Union. There have been some bad moves from Snoop, but imho he hasn't sold out. But yeah he def. gets more and deserves more respect than 50.
Now for a while I did think Cube sold out, mainly because I thought he would never do music again but I was proven wrong.
Ice-T, will never was a huge fan. But he's what like 50 somethin and plays a cop narc or detective or w/e, somethin he never woulda played when Cop Killa was released. But I approve of it, it's shown he's matured. Plus, he's real down to earth I dont mean to sound racist but he doesn't soudn like your black guy stereotype when he talks all "Yeah dog u my ***** I gots mad luv 4 u blah blah blah" u know what I mean lol.
While I dont see Linkin Park or Jay-Z as sell-outs. Jay-Z just suffers from large ego but what rapper doesn't lol.
