Just curious.

Ever get annoyed/bothered/intrigued/etc. when someone or people around you pronounce something differently? Or get weirded out by some of them?

Like, here's some of words I pronounce and majority of what I hear pronounce.

Me:Others

Mana - Maw-nuh:Man-uh
Polyester - Pawly-ester:Powly-ester
Siege - Seejh:Seeg
Quizno's - Kwiz-nose:Kweez-noes
Edible - Ed-ibble:Eed-ibble

Some other ones too. Most of them, probably all of them, I'm sure I pronounce wrong.

interesting.. I have found a large amount of people from around the world sound out words differently..

I have always been one to just say it how it looks.. sound it out etc..

I think you technically pronounce Mana wrong, since I've never even seen another person pronounce it like you. Polyester too, but that sounds more like an accent than a mis-pronounciation.

Siege I dunno, I pronounce it like you.

I'm pretty sure you pronounce Quizno's right, since that's how it sounds in the commercials for it.

I think you have Edible right too.

The caramel thing kinda annoys me. It SHOULD be ca-ra-mel, not car-mel, you can't just leave out an entire syllable like that.

The "better" half of me feels that "mah-nuh" is the 'correct' pronunciation, but my lazy ass says "man-uh" most of the time.

And yes, some of this shit really gets to me... I'm not even sure why.

[22:46:07] Fudd The Man: Red
[22:46:08] Fudd The Man: I gotta tell you
[22:46:14] Fudd The Man: something that's been bothering me
[22:46:24] Fudd The Man: and I've told you a little bit about this before
[22:46:35] Fudd The Man: but I never really got into as much depth as I am about to go
[22:46:42] Fudd The Man: Generally
[22:46:49] Fudd The Man: I don't really have a problem with white folk
[22:46:50] Fudd The Man: but
[22:46:56] Fudd The Man: When they pronounce words
[22:46:59] Fudd The Man: a certain "white" way
[22:47:01] Red: LOL
[22:47:02] Fudd The Man: that just..
[22:47:03] Fudd The Man: it kills me.
[22:47:07] Red: i know what you mean
[22:47:08] Red: i hate it
[22:47:11] Fudd The Man: LOL
[22:47:14] Fudd The Man: like instead of "roof"
[22:47:16] Red: karaoke is the one that drives me insane
[22:47:19] Fudd The Man: saying it like a long dog bark
[22:47:22] Red: LOL
[22:47:22] Fudd The Man: that's how I would
[22:47:27] Fudd The Man: but when they say "ruff"
[22:47:32] Red: yeah
[22:47:32] Fudd The Man: like it's not even a word with two O's
[22:47:36] Fudd The Man: I fucking hate that.
[22:47:38] Red: my grandparents in wisconsin have the worst
[22:48:02] Red: my grandparents in oakland have excellent pronunciation (sp?), which i guess i somehow inherited
[22:48:23] Red: my grandmother, who died last year, was from london
[22:48:34] Red: so she had the rigid english way of saying things
[22:48:41] Fudd The Man: Red
[22:48:43] Red: but i guess the midwest destroys white people's english
[22:48:43] Fudd The Man: Stop

[22:48:46] Fudd The Man: right
[22:48:46] Fudd The Man: there.
[22:48:49] Red: LOL
[22:48:53] Fudd The Man: well
[22:48:55] Fudd The Man: MidWest
[22:48:58] Fudd The Man: never really been there
[22:49:06] Fudd The Man: but

[22:49:14] Fudd The Man: if they say stuff like "pop"
[22:49:15] Red: i've spent plenty of time in wisconsin
[22:49:17] Red: and if it's any indication
[22:49:19] Fudd The Man: or whatever cultural diction goes
[22:49:20] Red: you're not missing much
[22:49:33] Fudd The Man: now
[22:49:37] Fudd The Man: something that started small
[22:49:40] Fudd The Man: like "roof"

[22:51:01] Fudd The Man: if that was the excuse
[22:51:11] Fudd The Man: they would say apprshiate
[22:51:17] Fudd The Man: and that's black folk.
[22:51:20] Fudd The Man: let's not get into that
[22:51:24] Red: LOL
[22:51:28] Fudd The Man: but I mean
[22:51:30] Fudd The Man: goddamn
[22:51:34] Fudd The Man: and sometimes

[22:52:18] Fudd The Man: they just.. they stretch that shit
[22:52:32] Fudd The Man: now maybe I might be saying that one wrong
[22:52:33] Fudd The Man: but I mean

[22:54:02] Fudd The Man: but that's actually the "correct" dictionary way of saying it
[22:54:09] Fudd The Man: so many people just got used to "machure"
[22:54:15] Red: the dictionary's wrong
[22:54:25] Fudd The Man: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/mature

[22:54:31] Red: it's wrong
[22:54:33] Fudd The Man: LOL

[22:55:34] Red: lol
[22:55:58] Fudd The Man: pome
[22:56:03] Fudd The Man: sometimes I'll even say "po-uhm"
[22:56:06] Fudd The Man: but poohem?
[22:56:09] Fudd The Man: what the fuck, man
[22:56:13] Fudd The Man: I did not
[22:56:15] Fudd The Man: get that memo.
[22:56:18] Red: i don't understand pooehm
[22:56:22] Red: po-uhm seems right
[22:56:24] Fudd The Man: yeah
[22:56:26] Fudd The Man: pooehm
[22:56:29] Fudd The Man: is just fucking
[22:56:31] Fudd The Man: that's the one I meant

Hmm.. I used to play WoW and people used to get in arguments over pronounciations.

Such as:

Hearthstone - Pronounced "Harthstone."- A lot of people I know pronouce it as Herthstone.
Aura - Pronounced "Ora" - I've heard A-ora, Ow-Ra (Bostonians?)and some guy even mispronounced it as "Aurora."
Shaman - Not too sure on this one.. Shaymen or Sha-men?
Paladin - Not too sure on this one either.. Pala-din or Pa-ladin?

Hmm can't seem to think of anymore.

Memphis, TN may be home to some of the most annoying pronounciations ever...at least in my opinion. It's always annoyed me when people add letters that aren't there in the first fucking place:

Milk = "MRRUK" ? the hell?! Come on, now. This bothered me from the beginning. One day in the reading segment of class, (I think it was 1st grade) I just couldn't take it anymore. I actually had an outburst: "IT'S MILK! MILK! THERE IS NO 'R'!!!!" They just said "we know...", and looked at me strange like "what's HIS problem?" Of course the "MRRUK" pronounciation continued, and it will forever be that way in Memphis and perhaps several other cities in the south. *eh, actually...it's probably more accurately described typed this way: "moorruk" or "muuruk"
Similar to the milk travesty...there is also Here = HRR or "Huur"

Also, there's more:
-street = "screet". straight = "scrate" strong = "scrong" <---apparently this was just a stupid fad, because...it just lasted for a few years. People began saying the words without the additional "c" after awhile, so these words are pronounced the normal way now.

------
Guile = "GULLY". what the fuck. WHAT the fuck? It doesn't even LOOK like it's pronounced that way! I never even saw the word "guile" or "beguiled" until the character from SF2....but nothing about that name looked like "GULLY" to me. That just sounds dumb.

Super Mario = "MARY-o". What the hell. Was this....a "white thing"? I only saw white people say this....mostly white people on tv. Whites I saw in person that happened to say it...said it the normal way: "Ma-rio". I've never known or seen a person(italian or black) whose name is "Mario" pronounce his own name as MARY-o. It's dumb, and even sounds a little gay. The host of Video Power lost huge cool points to me when he said "MARY-o Brothers!". I'll never forget that. It became even more stupid once the character was able to talk and say his name the correct way: "It's a me! MARIO!"....or you could've referenced the Super Mario Bros. Super Show....OR you could've gone with the Super Mario Bros. 3(and later part 4) segment of Captain N. NOWHERE in those examples is it said MARY-o. Why the fuck did people continue to say it incorrectly?

*random--heh, it cracked me up one day when this chinese girl in one of my classes talked about getting some "chops" when she was talking about potato "chips"...haha..we all had a good laugh at that, and she was a bit embarrased but couldn't help but laugh at herself. It was cute the way she stumbled over the language sometimes...(yeah, I would've hit it, given the chance....ah, if only I could morph into a white person for a day....that would've been no problem...just a matter of exploiting the asian girl weakness for the white cock.)

Are you in the midwest? It's in my experience that midwest people say "wa-der".

Some pronunciations that annoy me:

- Melk instead of Milk
- Menga instead of Mahnnga
- Roo or Rye-you instead of Ree-you, although it is a controversial pronunciation. But according to a friend from Japan, the pronunciation is closest to the word "lieu", a soft "e" between the "R" and the "u"
- Warsh instead of Wash (that's the worst one for me)

I have noticed tho that there are a whole load of american-isms creeping into the english way of speech. most noticable is the over use of the word LIKE.

Although that has very little to do with the subject of pronounciation, i thought id add it anyway.

The way I say it is like the crazy dude that says "Rated M for Mature" on the TV commericals... while my 8th grade teachers say it ``Ma-Tore``. She seems like the only person to say it like that... and british people. Accent maybe or retardation?

oh yeah, quarter = "kwaw-tuh" in the south.

Unfortunately, the rest of the country got a glimpse of how things are said most of the time thanks to Nelly's song from a few years ago, "Hot in Hrrr". heh, I have to admit I liked that song...I don't even like Nelly, but that song was alright...ok ok...yeah, I liked "Pimp Juice" too.

I've noticed a lot of older people like my grandma saying roach as "RO-ach". It's like they're saying it..kinda like how it actually looks. haha..so it becomes a 2-syllable word that way.

Worsh or "Warsh" for "wash" is funny to me. Usually I'll at least giggle a bit if I hear someone say it like that.

R = "Ar-ruh" is hilarious too. I usually hear older people saying that. So, they would call R. Kelly "AR-ruh".

it's also a little annoying that so many people actually say sword "sword". Well, perhaps that's more of an annoying at how so many damn words in our oh-so-great language aren't pronounced the same way they look. Still, it's just....annoying to hear "sword" when I came up thinking the correct way to say it is "sord"

How about masamune?

Massa-myoun
Massa-moon
Massa-moonay

Yeah, me too. The lazy part of me always thinks of them as "mang-guh" (manga) and "Massa-myoun" instead of "mahng-guh" and "Massa-moonay", which I know are the 'correct' pronunciations.

I also used to say "Rai-yu" back in the day, taking after my brother. Although I've changed, because I know "Re-yu" is a more 'accurate' pronunciation. I still say "Sag-it" all the time, though instead of "Sa-gat".

Also, what I said earlier about "roof" also goes for "room". Some people will say "rhum". I think the same people who do that might also say "Tooz-dee" instead of "Tooz-day".

Heck, watch enough of the day time talk shows and you see a lot of people slaughtering english.

i'm from the midwest so i refer to soft drinks/soda as "pop".

i live in detroit, but there are a lot of country people up here so i have heard some pretty weird pronunciations.

i'll never forget the first time i heard someone say "Gully" instead of guile. i was like "wtf..."

speaking of which, is it "Ay-don" or "Ad-on" for Adon? i've been saying Ad-on for a while.

"yorn" instead of "yours" is by far the most annoying shit ever.
"airy-day" instead of "ev-re-day". ...ungh.
"pewn-cil" instead of "pen-cil" for pencil: i've heard this in public school.
"mal-a-bul" instead of "mally-uh-bul" for malleable.

people from NY with the heavy accent say "law", but all i hear is "lar".
i've heard people from the south refer to soda as: "sodie pop".
i say "ma-chure" for mature. it just sounds better then, "ma-toor". "ma-toor" is goofy imo.

also, and maybe i'm alone on this one, but for as long as i can remember, i've always heard (some) white people add an extra "-zuh" or "-uh" suffix to certain words - but you have to be listening carefully to know what i'm talking about because they almost always do it when they're angry about something. people assume that this is limited to the Valley Girl way of speaking but i've heard this in michigan for as long i've been in school.

for example: if you watched the "Black/White" series on FX, there is a scene where the black mom is bitching at the white mom for calling her a bitch. the white mom calmly explains that she didn't mean it to be offensive. then towards the end of the argument she goes bananas, saying, "I don't want to have to choooose my words-ZUH!!!1." you really have to say it aloud to know what i mean i guess.

other examples include:
"room-uh" - as in, someone's little brother is their sister's room, she'll say: "mom! tell billy to get out of my roooooom-uh."
"hello-uh" - as in, you're driving with your average white girl in the car and someone starts to drift into in her lane; she says: "uh, hell-low-uh?" - say it aloud to get what i mean.

either/neither:
maybe its just me, but i find that you can come off as more of an asshole depending upon which version of these words you use. example: "aye-ther you realize she is a bitch and kick her to the curb or you'll keep getting shit on", is not the same as, "e-ther you realize she is a bitch and kick her to the curb or you'll keep getting shit on." "aye-ther" just seems to have more verbal "force" imo. i say "aye-ther" every time though.

The other night I was at a restaurant with my girlfriend and her friend. Her friend pronounced mozarella like moozarella. And I corrected her, saying there was only one O. Then she went on about hardcore Italians and how they pronounce it like that. I'm Italian myself, but I would never say it like that.

As a Japanese language student, and a half-Latino, I get kind of annoyed when people mangle the pronunciation of Japanese and Spanish words.
Of course, then I remember that most Americans can barely speak English, and therefore I should be patient with people trying to speak a foreign language. But MANGLING a commonly spoken word just ticks me off.

Like my dumbass Stepmother from the Midwest...pronounces "tortilla" as "tore-till-luh". WTF?

And for people who have trouble with Hiroshima, Toyota, and Manga...just remember that officially in Japanese we do not stress syllables (in English, most people are inclined to speak Japanese words in Iambic rhythm...Hi-RO-shi-MA), but many Japanese people sometimes stress the 2nd syllable of a word, usually without even realizing it (Hi-RO-shi-ma) (To-YO-ta) (Ma-N-ga). And yes "Ryu" is one syllable, and sounds most like "lieu".

You can hear often from the annoucers in games like the Last Blade ("Kan-ZA-ki Jyuu-ZO-u") and Samurai Shodown ("Ha-OOOOH-ma-ru")

Japanese vowels are easy...in fact, they are identical in sound with Spanish vowels.

a-"ah"
i--"ee"
u--"oo"
e--"eh"
o--"oh"

Spanish--
"J" sounds like H. So does "G", sometimes.
Jose--"Ho-seh"
Jorge--"Hor-heh"

Ñ--"n plus y" sound
Jalapeño--"Hah-lah-pehn-yo"

ll--double l = "y"
tortilla-"Tor-tee-ya"

Gyro, I'm aware that it's correctly pronounced "Heero" but when I order a "Heero" the cook/waiter/cashier goes "huh?" so I then say "Jairo" and they say "oh".

Also, there's more:
-street = "screet". straight = "scrate" strong = "scrong" <---apparently this was just a stupid fad, because...it just lasted for a few years. People began saying the words without the additional "c" after awhile, so these words are pronounced the normal way now.

Yeah, I remember people even pronouncing the plural "shrimp" as "scri-umps"...

The people that pronounce "mana" as "mah-nah" are just using the Japanese(or just non-English) phonetics. The sound "a" is always sounded out in Japanese as "ah"(as does Spanish and other languages). I see nothing wrong with pronouncing it as "mah-nah" but it feels natural to me to use "man-ah".

I have a friend that pronounces "gauge"(as in K-Groove, the Rage Gauge) as "gouge"(gouge out your eyes).

Another pronounces "electricity" as "electric-city". I can't claim the high ground on this one because I say "ehlec-tricity" when people tell me it's "EElec-tricity".

Fighting Game Section
Until I was about 12 I've called Kung Lao by the name "Kuhng Lay-o". Even though the announcer says his name.

The true pronunciation that I'm aware of:My pronunciation
Zahn-jee-ehv:Zane-geef
EE-oh-rEE:Ai-yor-EE

Another friend always says "Jin" instead of "Gen", that really gets at me.

Bump.

Black people should either be banned from court shows, or automatically get their cases dismissed for pronouncing "Your Honor" as "Your Hornuhr"

I like pronouncing either "i-ther" instead of "e-ther". I swear I'm alone on this.

I'm with asianhitler on this one.
