I remember the days long ago when they used to air this show on CN. Its been a while but i recently re-watched the anime on DVD. Forgot how neat this show was.
Its about a guy named Yuji, whom after contracting a diesase and being cryogenicly frozen till they find a cure, wakes up 22 years later to a world thats been completly invested by giant alien bugs called the "Blue".
One of the reasons i like it, is its one of the more realistic animes out there. Other than the two main characters, any other part of the cast no matter how likeable they may be presented, are fair-game for getting off by the bugs. Some unexpectedly too. The characters themselves are just normal people as well, no super-powered hero-types here. While the show does have robots in it, much like the humans, they can easily be crushed/ripped it half by the blue as well.
The show's pretty much all about Yuji trying to survive and make sense out of everything thats going on. Nice character development throughout the 26 episodes.
Anyone else liked this show?

why is a show about giant bugs called blue gender?
Well the giant killer bugs are called the Blue, so thats part of the title. Yeah i never got the "gender" part of it. Also it was never explained why they called the bugs the Blue.
Edit: And no, NONE of the bugs in the show were ever colored blue either.

They never came up with a name for Yuji's disease, only that it was caused by "B-Cells". In the Movie, Blue Gender: The Warrior. They called it the Prophecy syndrome.
As for the "movie" in case anyone is wondering, it was nothing but an attempt to cram the gist of the 26 episode anime into 1hr 30mins, and it came out pretty lousey. It started out decent recounting the basic events from the first 8-9 episodes, but after that it got WAAAY out of sync with entire subplots crucial to the show's story tottally skipped, it just ended in a mess.
It does get points though for having many New animated scenes to Reenact what happened in the show.

The show also had tits. Well, almost.
The show was... interesting, to say the least. Am I a fan? ...no, not really. It's worth a watch, but after one sitting through the entire series you'll likely be done.

I remember liking that show a lot and being suprised that it wasn't real popular. Personally I thought the story kinda went downhill in the last few episodes (when the Blue went on a rampage in space) but overall it was a great show. I watched the uncut version, I imagine it would have had to have been fairly butchered to be shown on AS but it's not like the show was Ninja Scroll bloody or anything.
As for the name, I never really got that myself. Yeah, Blue comes from the name of the "disease" and the name of the monsters but my guess on the gender part is ment to refer to the people/things that cary the virus. Why?
*MINI SPOILERS*
The planet gave people the Blue-whatever so they would destory themselves and leave the planet alone. Scientists took the virus and injected it into other creatures which caused all the monsters but be them human or whatever, any creature with the Blue virus is more or less the same. They aren't human, rabbit, male, or female, they are Blue. So Blue is like it's own gender. That's my take anyway.

The Blues looked just like raging vaginas.
It was a good show, but I only really caught about five episodes before dropping it for some reason.

Well the way it went is: The planet, in a way, can be seen as one large organism. Just like the human body, whenever a virus invades it and causes damage anti-bodies are released to combat the virus. In this case however, the virus causeing damage to the body(earth) is humans, and the anti-bodie released to stop the virus is the B-Cells that some humans become born with.
Things wouldn't have turned out nearly as bad though, as the bugs themselves didn't just appear but were CREATED by the blundering scientists studying it. By injecting the B-Cell into animals during testing, the Cells reacted much more aggressively for some reason inside animals. This caused the B-Cell is evolve mutating the animals and creating the giant killer bugs, also any infected animals that somehow got out of the lab and breeded with the outside animal population spread it even further.
Then before ya know it, giant killer bugs start appearing one day to kill all humans, fulfilling the planet's original desire rid itself of the virus called mankind.

The show did have tits, as well as lesbo scenes and other stuff. Not alot though just sprinkled through out the show.
Cartoon Network's airing was edited alot, the DVDs are'nt.

I really got into the show. It was realistic except for some of the plot twists the last couple of episodes.
Still a great show and excellent characters, although the body count was pretty shocking at the time for me. I mean it wasn't Elfien Lied or Beserk bloody but damn, did a lot of people get fucked up.
Super Warrior: I remember seeing some grayish blue bugs. And that last one at the end looked blue.

I saw a few episodes here and there when it was on AS. My friend's brother bought the entire season (used) so I'll probably just ask him to borrow it.

I'm surprised so many people like blue gender. I didn't enjoy it as much as i hoped when it aired on AS. The action didn't get much of my attention and the characters weren't that great imo. I don't think it's bad in the sense that it's not worth watching; I just never expected there to be fans of the show.

Yuji was a total fucking wimpy ass simp.
I heard comparisons to Yuji and Evangelion's Shinju Ikari before.
No way. The biggest difference between the two is unlike Shinji, Yuji is only whiney and wimpy at the start of the show, and slowly but surely MATURES as the series goes on. At the end of the show Yuji has become a badass Armor-Shrike pilot, with the confidence and leadership ability to command his own platoon, and take out Blue that the rest of the squad gets creamed by.
Shinji Ikari however is fairly 1-demensional and NEVER really evolves and matures, from the whiney bitch he was since episode 1. Never really acheives that true confidence within himself, etc.
At the end of Blue Gender, Yuji is a MAN.
At the end of evangelion, Shinji is the same pussified wimp on the verge of mentel breakdown, that he was from 26 episodes earlier.
Oh and Yuji lands a HOT blond military chick during Blue Gender, whereas Shinji does not come close.

It takes a little while to build-up. The first 6-7 episodes may have seemed slowpaced but it gets alot better after that rough initial phase.
Thats just how some animes are, the first handfull of episodes take a bit to lay all the groundwork and build-up, then launches onward from there.

yep I got bored of it after acouple of episodes, just felt like it was'nt going any where.
Hell They should of just ripped of Starship Troopers properly I mean they had the bugs didnt they, now that would of been hella more fun to watch.

The only reason Yuji was so competent then was become he was half-insane (cuz he can't cope with SHIT), and damn near a Blue himself.

Notice how the more badass Yuji became, the less cold hearted Marlene became? Both characters personalities kind of gradually did a 180 at the same time.
I thought the show was pretty decent, but got a little too crazy at the end.

Yuji: "Allright i play Armor-Shrike Card in attack mode".
Alien Bug: "Ha! Your pitaful robot card does not have the hit points required to break my defenses."
Yuji: "Ahhh but this is no normal shrike card, it is the Double-Edge model complete with twin Mega blades!"
Alien Bug: "oh crap!"
Yuji: "Double-Edge Attack!"

Oh yeah, just remember this while flipping through the channels. The show still airs on "Funimation TV". Not sure which channels have that, I know a channel called "Colours" airs it on Sundays.

Yuji was a total fucking wimpy ass simp.
Starting off he is. He and the girl are total opposites on the spectrum with her being a killing machine. Then later on in the series they seem to switch roles.
I thought that was neat.
Good series. Had some sad moments, particular the little girl that wanted Yuji to always be there to protect her.

Youne
Yeah he tells her twice that he'll protect her, but when the time comes to fight off the blue he fails. Last thing he sees before losing consciousness is her standing there speechless looking at him, then suddenly one of the blue comes into frame and scoops her up. Pretty intense scene.
In the movie this happens differently: he tells her he'll protect her no matter what, then after she leaves he says to himself: "you idiot, you know theres nothing you can do for her".
