View Full Version : Underrated Singers
Kelis. It's the truth. People think that she can't sing. Which is bullshit. She has a very unique voice. No one out there right now can sing like her. I've been listening to Tasty all day and it really is a GREAT album. I don't care 'Ew..Milkshake blah blah' kiss my ass and open your mind. Granted, she shouldn't have cut her hair but whatever.
Fergie is up there too.

I don't get why TAMIA's career is always just kinda existing on the sidelines. Not only is she is one of the hottest singers I've ever seen(easily on par with Beyonce-level hotness. I would likely commit murder just to hit it.)...her voice just happens to be amazing. So, with TnA + actual talent....what's going wrong? I still love that first single "You Put a Move on My Heart". The voice was smooooth, sultry, AND had some power....excellent control, etc. etc. Then she hit us off with "Slow Jam" which was a double-dose of greatness since Babyface was on there.(actually, it was a Triple threat; I just remembered Barry White had a small bit on that song too) Ear-Delicious.
just to re-iterate the hotness....dammit....salad-tossable, this girl.

...and the group Mint Condition. I really don't get why they didn't become mega-popular even in the 90s just before the boy-band craze came back. They put out 99% good stuff. I have only heard 2 or 3 Mint Condition songs that I didn't like. Why are people clueless to such greatness like "So Fine"? and "What Kind of Man Would I Be?"
Jade was tight back in the early 90s. I've heard their failure was self-inflicted, as they apparently couldn't get along, and just broke up.(yeah, really smart decision, ladies...break up after you come out strong with "Don't Walk Away" and Mr. Do-Right, and "One Woman Man")

Stokely Williams is either love it or hate him. My brother can't stand his voice. I like him a lot, but I can see why some people wouldn't like it. I highly recommend you get "Definition of a Band". I guess the same reason MC didn't blow up is the same reason Boyz II Men died out....which is I can't figure out why other than people getting tired of new jack swing

I do not listen to much R&B as of late but I was always surprised the Musiq did not do that well.
and Corey Taylor can sing, but he can also kick ass and kicking ass has gotten him more money and a grammy so why would he stop?
Also, it not like he has much to say in either group, I like a few Stone Sour songs but he screams better than he sings. If I want to hear melodic vocals to the sound of a soft guitar, he is not the first name that comes to mind.

He's at least slightly overrated at both.
Further more, there are songs on their new SS cd that are slipknot songs - two drumers and then there's Vermillion, from subliminal verses, which is basically a SS song. So it's not like omg teh band members are keeping him from achieving his true singing self!

just talking vocial talent and not music; Christina is the best sounding nowadays. If she did a little more r&b (real r&b, not the club bangers trying to pass off as r&b), she sould could like Teena Marie and Jon B repping that Ivroy soul.
A rant: Why is r&b such garbage today? Not r&b at all, it should just be called "club bangers" made by the "it" producers. and the sound/ vocies are weak and a dime a dozen. These days, kids don't care about music and got short attention spands. They just wanna bump some shit in they ride or hear that shit "up in the club" and the quality is way down. A r&b song is on the radio and one month later, its already old and kids sick of listening to them and move on to the next pop song. Its throw a way music. Todays so called r&b are a dime a dozen, cannot stand the test of time like the classics. I don't called it Old school, they Classics in my book: Marvin, Luther, Teena, etc....
70's soul, 60's motown, 80's (and early 90's) r&b >>>> garbage trying to pass for r&b these days
the music doesn't have to be slow, just a real talent singing and not about the beats produced by Kanye......
How many songs do we have to hear with lyrics about ," my man/girl on the side" or about being in all up in the club?
I grew up with r&b from the 90's and at least the vocials had talent: Boyz II men, Shai, Silk, Monica, Toni Braxton, SWV, Jon B, xscape, etc. They music can stand the test of time (with help from Babyface, Jimmy Jam / Terry Lewis, Dallas Austin, Diane Warren/ David Foster, Jermine Dupre) Can you listen to the 2000's artists in 2010's?
Maybe I'm just an old fool that can't let go growing up with the 70s'80's 90's r&b soul, and all that shit....
Do r&b groups exist anymore? now everybody is for themselves all solo with weak voices, I would like to hear more the Harmony back in r&b and real talent. Thats why I be listenin' to country music now, at least they be singing on some different shit...

Granted, there are a few songs out now that I really like (I'm actually looking forward to Fergie's album. She does have good singing ability) but overall, I'm a mid 80's to mid 90's R&B fan. Sade, Brownstone (another underrated group), Keith Sweat, Shanice, Jill Scott..amoung others.

Ok well, there's a genre(s) of music called Garage/2 Step popular in England and some parts of Europe. So in like 1998/9 Artful Dodger (a 2 step producer) produced the track 'Rewind' for Craig David which basically made him who he is. Craig got more and more popular because of Rewind while Artful Dodger was in the shadows. They continued working on songs but there's was a track "Please Don't Turn Me On" Dodger wanted Craig to do vocals on but Craig refused saying he was too busy working on is own debut album. Left a bad taste in the mouth of some people, of course then Fill Me In comes out and it's "Artful who"?
EDIT: No one mentions Tony Toni Tone

dang u british hold a grudge..if that shit went down..and probably has in america..we'd be like fuck it w.e If they making good music we gonna listen.
Like if em and dr.dre had a falling out..people would still listen to em and dr.dre.
But ya like i said the whole screwing america on his 2nd and third album is more likely a labels choice and not craigs..cause he blew up here and his music was defintly summer hits.
i think he tried to briong over his second album..but not too sure. i def know that new one didnt make it here.
I can't stand Rewind.

I also like Kylie(*not just because I'd bang her sweet ass 6 ways to Sunday), but come on. She does not compare to early Madonna or Christi Aguilera's power and control.
*well, I'll admit Madonna isn't really a huge talent specifically on vocals...but her songs have had an overall great, catchy, interesting sound...especially the early stuff like Dress You Up and Material Girl. But Aguilera...please. Her voice kills Kylie.
*and oh yes...Love At First Sight = totally Ear-Delicious.
*Tone Toni Tony's "Lay Your Head on My Pillow" is one of the greatest songs of all time. There have been many times where I just listened to that on repeat....actually that mention put it on my mind, and I'm listening to that song now.
*oh! I forgot "I Wanna Dance Tonight" by TTT featuring Lucy Pearl is on my playlist right after "Lay Your Head.."! oh yeahhhh...It's not as good as "Lay..", but it's still nice.
*there was some female group that did a cover of the OJays(I think?) "Stairway to Heaven", and it was great. The sad thing is...
1. I can't remember their name.
2. Searching for this is impossible, since to the vast majority of white people..."Stairway to Heaven" = that rock song....thus, this is all you'll see on various file-sharing things.
3. Or...people only remember the original OJays song.
*I also prefer EnVogue's version of "Giving Him Something He Can Feel" to the original.

Emily Bindiger?
And I have to thank Million for bringing up Tamia...I totally forgot about her. She is indeed very talented (though I haven't heard her stuff in years), and almost unfairly attractive.
I don't like Madonna's stuff. The only songs I really like of hers were Just Like a Prayer and Human Nature. I guess the rest of the stuff was OK...I don't hate it, but it's not really my thing. Except for that "Take a Bow" song, which I mostly hated just due to overexposure.

Let's see....in my opinion, Mariah has sounded great on most of the things I've heard from her:
-"One Sweet Day" with Boyz II Men
-"Hero"
-the first single, Vision of Love
-both versions of Fantasy <--this doesn't display her overall vocal talent as much as other songs, but I love it. How can you deny the simple greatness of the "Genius of Love" melody? Mariah sounds fantastic on that.
-When You Believe (*the Prince of Egypt soundtrack may be the greatest soundtrack of all time, btw. I highly recommend it. EVERYTHING on there is good....dammit, and I just noticed; it has, in fact, disappeared. Of fucking course. My things always mysteriously vanish.)

...ah, and Someday, Dreamlover, Emotions, etc. Come on, the list of Mariah's greatness just has no end.
She hasn't made it yet...but what about Paris from American Idol? I think that was her name. A lot of people(especially here) wouldn't care since she's from that show, and they immediately associate Am.Idol = pop trash(because "pop" is always bad, right? Yeah right, you people didn't like Michael Jackson in the 80s, I guess?) Paris was on another level compared to most American Idol singers in that show's entire history. I would've ended the season right there and declared her the winner.(*if it weren't for Brenna Gether's hotness swaying my judgement...but that's another issue)

You've got to be kidding. Mariah w/ her whistle register is a legend.

Can somebody explain to me why Mariah Carey is being discussed in an Underrated Singers thread?

Underrated: Keith Martin
Bad Boys I Soundtrack: 8. Never Find Someone Like You - Keith Martin
This guy is very talented and my most underrated male singer. Check out the song if you guys can. This song reminds me that r&b nowaday doesn't have romance and that romantic feeling to it. ( I don't think the word 'romance' does not exist anymore)
I don't knowto say if Keith Martin is underrated or just not known, but very talented.
Female underrated singer: Deniece Williams
You may heard from her from her duet with Johnny Mathis "Too Much Too Little Too Late". But she has a very calm voice and she is doing gospel now. She is Jzzie Phe (producer) mom. She did have a pop hit ,"Lets hear it for the boy" sometime in the 80's.

Ginuwine > Usher vocally
This thread reminded me of when I was watching Americas Got Talent and this group of three 16 y/o girls called N'Versity were AMAZING. And brandy hated on them for stupid reasons (think she was a bit jealous actually)

Yea Brandy was hatin'.........hard. I like her but she shouldn't hate.
Another artist that I think is slept on is Keith Washington. I remember reading back and I saw someone say they were a fan of early 90's R&B. I think it was Zulu. If anyone else is a fan of early 90's r&b could you possibly list names of solo male singers of that era?
I know its alot to ask of but I've been searching for this song for damn near 13 or more yrs!!! I don't know any lyrics to it, I just know I saw the video in the summer of 93-96. It was a guy and I think the girl was pregnant in the video or something. And I don't think the guy was a huge artist or anything. I'll know it if I hear it.
If anyone has any knowledge of this PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Eric Benet.
A Day in the Life is classic, not a weak song on it. Hurricane got no promotion, but it's good, too.
Jon B.
After Cool Relax, he fell of many people's radar, but since then he dropped two albums, Pleasures U Like, and Stronger Everyday, that real R&B lovers should not miss.
Carl Thomas.
He's probably gonna go down as a one hit wonder for I Wish, which is sad, cuz he had some real good material on his two albums.
Other cats I gotta mnetion:
Rahsaan Patterson
Dwele
Van Hunt
Cosign on Raheem DeVaughn, if only for the track, "Breathe".

Damn that was a painfully sad video.

Yea, I remember a guy crying during that song when our teacher let us listen to the radio in middle school. I was like "damn man.........thats a sad ass song."
Yea but Aaron Hall was the voice of the 90's to me. I would've known it was him. hhmmm. I even went to a website that has nothing but 90's R&B and I still couldn't find this singer. I know this is hopeless, but I have to find this song. I wish I could go back in time and slap myself. Damn I was a dumb kid. I even remember seeing the video and saying "O yea, this is my shit!" Why in the hell didn't I get this guy's name!!!! Atleast the name of the song........SHIT!

The song wasn't sad, it was the video. If you listen to the song, his chick left him. Now all-of-a-sudden in the video she died? WTF?
"I thought you'd be with me forever, but I guess someone took my place. took the place of me loving you, and making love to you all through the night" All of a sudden god is killing hoes to lay game down? Talk about cock-blocking.

You wanna talk about unnapreciated singers: Honus Honus from Man Man. Not r&b but I doubt this guy gets the appreciation I think he deserves http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rf29NwL-vL0&search=engwish%20bwood. Greatest voice ever.

hmm i will have to look into it myself. I've been going on peoples words cause this is the first time ive heard she could sing. And to compare her to christina..damn
oh i think aguleria is underrated..people are still hating because of her slut look transformation..when her voice...literally destroys soo many pop singers.
QFT. Christina is an absolute vocal beast. But you are right, she does get shitted on alot. I think the new record could do a lot to turn heads again. Her 1st record was incredible especially considering that was the time when all the Britney Spears clones were coming out of the woodwork. Barring any really stupid career moves, she could be up there with Aretha Franklin, Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton, Gladys Knight. Moving on to the topic to underrated singers
-Brownstone (their cover of the Eagles "I can't tell you why" is Bauer Tier)
-Darren Hayes (Savage Garden Singer)
-The Bee Gees (Go ahead and laugh. Groups today would cut off an arm and a leg to have their melody and songwriting ability)
-India Arie

I'll have to say Nina Persson of the Cardigans. She has one of the most delicate, softest-sounding voices I have ever listened to.

Dio does indeed Rock. His vocals on "Rainbow in the Dark" are godlike. I know there are more metal guys out there with amazing voices, but they are all excaping me right now.
