my opinion: nobody is fucking with NY, period. its gotta be the water because you can have a nyer come down to the south or the west and the shit doesn't taste the same. i think sbarros (outside of the north) only tastes similar because they import ny water.

for the record, i've been to italy...i can't speak for all of italian pizza in italy but in the place that i went, they weren't fucking with ny either. i believe i was in vincenza...coulda been venice, but i don't think i ate pizza while i was there.

I haven't had good NYC Pizza since Vinny's on 238th street one White Plains Road in the Bronx. That was some excellent shit right there. I'd normally eat like 2 slices at a time.

Although Ray's Pizza on, I believe, 47th street(Broadway) in Manhattan is alright.

the recipe and the water, but you take that recipe to anywhere other than ny and use their water and you don't get the same taste, period. the taste (special recipe included) is still inferior to ny pizza. this is why you get places with nyers in the south, making pizza the same way they did when they lived in ny, but it tastes different. you could have the best recipe, but its the water. it HAS to be, because it just does not taste as good without it.

the water is the key ingredient. and ny pizza > anything, really. if you live outside of ny (not including states that are near ny like nj, ct, etc.), start asking your favorite place to import bottled ny tap water.

funny story like 4 years ago after my 2nd year of college we had this great idea of visiting every state and we tried pizza from every state

the farther out west you got the worse it is

best was NJ/NY followed by Minnesota

Utah had the worst IMO

i've been to:

nebraska, colorado, new mexico, texas, kansas, iowa, nc, sc, georgia, florida, virginia, maryland, nj, etc. as far as the places i've been in the u.s. outside of ny, to answer your question.

and sbarros is the closest thing you'll get to something tasting similar to ny pizza, outside of ny. if you or anybody else's sbarros tastes shitty then blame your workers. sbarros is decent from the places i've had it. just because a restaurant where you live doesn't taste good doesn't mean all of them are like that...

from what i've had, papa johns tastes pretty bland. i'm not gonna say all the papa john chains in the u.s. have a similar taste though.

I remember on Food Network there was a show around this concept. It was Ny vs Chicago. Chicago peeps said that Ny pizza is like cardboard, the New Yorknese said the Chicago pizza was thick as a cake. That show made me hungry.

In my neighborhood there is a italian pizza shop named Cossetta's that's Ny style. Shits good as hell.

NY pizza only tastes good if you live in NYC and are thus familiar with the city water. If you come from another city it's not so good unless you spend a long enough time their to get used to it.

Yo Momma's Pizza [miami, florida]... yeah that's what it's called. I swear there is so much freaking cheese on their pizzas you can have constipation(sp?) for a year. So please don't bother asking for more cheese unless you just want to kill your bowels. =)

Pizza Hut probaly has the best dine-in place. I think it's what... 10 bucks or whatever you pay for a medium pizza and unlimited buffet which can consist of salads, bread and pasta [in certain huts. Some don't got crap]. Oh yeah and unlimited drinkage if you throw in 5 more dollars.

i honestly think ppl are reaching too much with the sbarros/ny pizza outside of ny thing tasting THE SAME. again, i never said that. the only reason these two got compared was because i can't think of another "major" chain of pizza restaurants all over the u.s. with thin crusts, big slices and a similar, even if small, ny taste.
niggas in this thread are taking it as the gospel, like sbarros is ny pizza. thats srk for you.

then again, if you think dominos or papa john's tastes better than sbarros, we have completely different tastes anyway (understatement). you ppl's sbarros must have workers that don't know how to do shit.

well if you put all of the ppl in this thread together, many of us have traveled all over america and have been out of this country and have tasted pizza in various parts of the world/nation.

myself, i have had pizza in germany made by hungarians, i've had pizza in italy, and of course various parts of the states. somebody else in this thread confirmed what i said, as far as pizza in italy not tasting as good as the pizza here in the states (and maybe you might think that we're biased because we "grew up" on pizza here, but i don't think so at all).

the question wasn't meant to be taken so seriously, either. if i ask you who do you think is the best looking girl in the world, are you going to be like, "i can't answer because i haven't met all of the females in the world?":wonder:

Sbarro's is garbage, and NOT indicative of NYC pizza. Maybe NYC "style" pizza, but not taste.

I live in Brooklyn, home of the best pizzeria's on the planet earth. Shit you would never have heard of unless you lived around here. Vaccarro's on Ft. Hamilton, Sal's on Bay Ridge, L&B Spumoni Gardens, etc.

Trust me, if you want to taste real pizza for the first time in your entire life, come to Brooklyn. Nowhere else is TOUCHING it. I travel pretty frequently, I've been to Chicago. I'm not a hater, Chicago deep dish pizza is excellent, and if I couldn't get Brooklyn pizza I'd choose that second. But again, it's SECOND. NYC's is still superior in texture and taste.

I've also been to Cali...

And I don't know why it's even in the discussion. The shit they pretend is pizza in California is absolute trash. Ketchup, Kraft slices and Wonder bread. Cali, I love ya, but your pizza needs some serious work. Stick to sushi, you guys do that very well. (Though I must say there are places just as good in NYC.)

When it comes to pizza, (and bagels, but that's another thread I suppose) NYC EASILY has all other places on lock.

Hell, come on, it's NYC, the capital of the (fashion, culinary, business, art, culture) world, there isn't a whole lot of things (especially in terms of food) that we can't do here as good or better than just about anywhere else. That's not typical cocky new yorker speaking, it's the goddamn truth.

The only place that came even CLOSE to NYC pizza (besides NJ of course, there are many good pizza shops in good ol NY jr.) for me was this ONE place I went to in south Philly. I spent 2 months in Philly, and ALL the pizza joints I went to sucked balls cept this ONE. Cheesesteaks however were, of course, plentiful and friggin delicious. There's something in Philly water that makes their bread taste better, I swear.

i don't agree. it HAS to be the water. what else could it be?? its not whatever special recipe a particular shop has, its not the dough, its not the tomato sauce, etc...there has to be an explanations as to why you can move a group of ppl from ny and have them make pizza using their normal ingredients and recipes and it not come out the same.

caliagent#3
07-31-2006, 08:48 AM
Well i know it's not the water becuase i used to work in a lab and i'd have to run chemical tests on the cities water. We got water samples from all over: NY, NJ, CA, GA, RI, MA and the water is more or less the same. If there was an abnormal amount of any one chemical then i'd say it might have something to do with the water. But i think it's something more like how the pizza has been made since NY had the large influx of immigrants. A few people made their pizza a certain way and the people who grew up eating it, made there pizza the same way but added a different flair to it. I honestly think the dough, sauce, and use of fresh ingredients is what seperates NY pizza from the rest.

I honestly think the dough, sauce, and use of fresh ingredients is what seperates NY pizza from the rest.no its the water, its all about the fucking water!

at first glance of this thread i thought i had discovered more motoki lingo and that water ment bitch or homo but he was actually talking about water. boo-urns

Interesting, although I've never been to New York, I find it hard to imagine a better hot dog than the ones served in Los Angeles (Pinks especially).

Chicago all the way. Been to New York, didn't really find anything special about it.

Barring a Chicago style, Papa Murphy's is the best pizza chain there is.

Chicago.

i have to disagree with most here.

Chicago owns all.

im a californian btw... and i have to wonder, why the fuck is california even on the list??

There are many things california does better than other states (like acting fake, showing off cars, and paying too much for real estate) but pizza is NOT one of them.

Maybe if we were ranking avocados or personal trainers or sheer number of illegal aliens, or something.. but not pizza.

New york owns everything... Shit, even when I was in Italy, the pizza that we had in Florence, Rome, San Remo, and Milan didn't compete to NY by anything

In New York, as far as I've been...
Best pizza

John's Pizza near Times Square. I go there whenever I go to the theatre.
here's a review
http://www.newyorkmetro.com/listings/restaurant/johns_pizzeria02/

Spumoni Gardens in Brooklyn. I used to work there... we sold about 500 pizzas daily (open from noon-9pm only, so 500 in that period of time = a LOT)
http://newyork.citysearch.com/review/11350504 that's a couple of reviews.

BTW: about the water... Why do you think New York bagels are the best also? EVERYTHING is in the water.

EDIT: the pizza that's from that place on canal street in CHINATOWN in New York was better than the slice that I had in Chicago, and better than all the pizza I bought in Italy. (i don't know the name of hte place i went to in Chicago)

The best pizza as far as I've had is from this place called Nick's somewhere in Manhatten. If anybody knows where it's at, PLEASE let me know. It was about a year ago when i was there. I was chillen with some peeps walking aronud the city and we stopped in... i wasn't sure where we were at that time The slices were $2.25, and the pies were cut in six slices, so you got a HUGE slice... Everything about it was excellent... Anybody know where this place is?

I dont think Chicago style deep dish should even be on there. NYC pizza is good and all but its just fast food. You can go in, grab a slice, eat it on the run. Deep dish is a fucking EXPERIENCE. You need to sit down, get a fork and knife and take your time.

Im a Chi-town boy, so fuck New York.

I've been to over half the states and a few other countries and so far Chicago had the best pizza IMO....hell they probably had the best food in general. Even small diners and Dennys had food better than expensive places I've been.

You're welcome ^.^ Too bad I couldn't get you guys over to the other pizza joints that I prefered to that small pizza resturant that I ended up taking you guys too.

For pizza, I've had it in Chicago (since I live there), Cali, Wyoming, NYC and Florida. Cali is far to greasey, wyoming tasted like lasagna, Florida was decent, NYC made me want to vomit (I had it at 2 places while there and they were both like that). Chicago wins hands down.

You can't really compare italian pizza with american pizza. It's pretty much two different things.

I like pizza from Italy better....but i like that style better than american pizza. I had pizza in new york once when i was young...it remember it being alright. But i don't remember it blowing my mind.

Eitherway....Toronto's chinese food = top tier.

NJ has the best Pizza.
I used to tour a bit, trying different Pizza parlours, and NJ by far has it's greatest Pizza in one paticular place. If you're ever in Jersey, go to Cherry Hill and look up "King of Pizza." It's the greatest place on earth to get Pizza.

I'm pretty pissed now that I live in Florida, not only because of the water, but because I can't get a decent cheesesteak sandwich either. Also, no one seems to make hoagies, there is only Sub-Way.
