I'm looking to build one.
What are the differences between these two? Is one durable/reliable than the other? Or is it just preference?
The buttons on the happ ultimate are shaped inward facing the bottom, am I right?
Also, the buttons on the competition are shaped outward facing the top? is this right?
happs competition convex are the best for fighters. They're easier to slide, durable, reliable and they look sweet..
The other buttons you're talking about are concaves. They're old school. Happs makes them too competition concaves and convex.
The only difference, is what you want. Whatever makes you feel comfortable to play with. The concaves have a dip in the middle. The convex are the ones that pop out.

I don't like happ ultimate buttons. They're identical to standard happ buttons (horizontal) except the microswitch is vertical rather than horizontal. If anyone prefers ultimates, I recommend regular horizontal buttons. The horizontal buttons have a positive feel when you press them because the microswitch is pressed like a button. On an ultimate the part that activates the switch slides by it. Not good. It can eventually wear out the switch.
But for fighting games? Comp buttons FTW all day.

I like competition buttons too. Nitewalker pretty much summed up the durability, otherwise its just preference.

Concave buttons are alright but I think competition convex buttons are much better. They're lower and much easier on the hands. Things such as RCs in CvS2, drumming, kara-thorws in 3S, etc, feel pretty weird when playing with concave buttons.

comp: whole button feels flat, so you can press it anywhere and it feels the same.
standard (horizontal switch, with concave): buttons are meant to be pressed straight in the center, otherwise they kind of hurt your fingertips.
if you were playing a game like a shooter or bust-a-move, etc stuff with like 1-3 buttons concave buttons are better because you can rest your fingers "in" them. if you're playing something where your hands are constantly moving, like a fighting game, you're much better off with competition buttons.

Concave buttons feel kinda mushy to me when you compare them to the convex ones.

concave buttons make it hard to do stuff like rolling in CvS2, or entering custom combo mode, anything where you hit 2 buttons next to each other vertically. my sticks with competition buttons feel soooooo good. i haven't used sanwa buttons yet, but i can't see how they could be that much better.

It's all personal preference. I'm a Sanwa man through and through. Nothing beats their big spongey buttons IMHO. But I know plenty of folks who hate them.

Yeah, some people find them TOO sensitive. I like em though. I'm a light handed player.
The reason sanwa buttons are more sensitive is that they use a rubber "spring" similar to that of a game pad (inside). Happ buttons have an actual spring inside them. But yeah, it's definitely pref. If you play heavy handed I'd shy away from sanwa buttons.

Comp buttons were designed specifically for better performance in fighting games. That's why they're flat and low to the stick. Doing things like drumming and kara throwing on convex buttons just feel more natural on convex buttons.
I used to use a hybrid stick with an older Sanwa stick (spring is a bit tighter than on newer Sanwa sticks) with convex buttons and really like it. Convex buttons are light to the touch yet feel durable as well. Now I use an all Sanwa stick which has a noticeably lighter spring and Sanwa buttons are basically comp buttons except much bigger and even lighter to the touch. Takes almost no force to depress them and are good for people who don't prefer to put any real force into their button presses.
