If anyone knows of any sites that always have ST vids up, post the link and I'll put it in the OP. If it's a site that has ST vids up some of the time but not always (like a-cho or something) then just make a post about it in the thread.

Here's the major resources that I know of:

www.combovideos.com - An abundance of Japanese ST footage.

www.putfile.com/nohoho - more Japanese ST footage.

www.youtube.com - Lots of stuff on here of course, it'd be nice if someone could make a playlist of all the ST matches on here worth seeing.

http://gfb.combovideos.com/ - Updates on vids available elsewhere on the web.

Get posting

This site requests that you only download one movie at a time please:
http://hypersf2.web.fc2.com/0001cup01.html

From a Tokyo arcade called "Las Vegas." The top vids are tourney, the bottom vids are casuals.

These are not top Japanese players by any means, but still some decent matches. That Dic seems like he knows what's up, and that Guile player knows exactly how to play against Honda.

And don't miss out on that WW Blanka action....

Sup SRK, long time no post,

http://blog.mi-ka-do.net/?eid=176606
Neo Star Cup Prelims @ Mikado
The rules (http://star.html.tv/2006main.html) prohibited top tier (chun sim boxer claw osagat) character times three. I'd speculate that Gian would have used sim x3 and had Muteki's number (02_D-2ndRound.zip) otherwise. Who knows.

The light grey dictator player is Taira. Dude is #1 dic player - he's been hotter than YuuVega this year - and the youngest of the elite players in Japan. His match vs. Noguchi (07_semiFinal1.zip) was extremely hot.

http://stand-headup.sunnyday.jp/
(> movie > ssfIIx > lasvegas cup)
More casual matches from the same batch that NKI linked to above. More Taira! The other MOF/MSC links still work, too, I think. (I mentioned those a long time ago on NKI's thread)

Semi-O/T:
In the recent batch of SSF2 (<- not turbo) matches on the Daigo fan page (http://members2.jcom.home.ne.jp/monmon999/index.html) Honda (proprietor) writes at the top that Daigo was using an option select trick when he went for ticks with guile:

safe jump in short (hold 2) -> 6+punch~8+kick

If Cammy does nothing she gets thrown. If she does a Cannon Spike reversal, however, she'll eat the Flash Kick (which has more invincibility.) Pretty neat.

So chun is considered top tier in japan ? Interesting. Oh and I never saw Dic ranked as a top tier char in Japan, while he's generally considered top tier in the US.

xpre01 N Oah (Boxer) & Muteki Guile vs. Ren (Dic) & Tsunoppi (Guile)
xpre02 Akynd (O.Ken) & Toujou (Chun) vs. Seki (DJ) & Kachu (Claw)
xpre03 Nama (Gief) & Tazawa (Guile) vs. Maoh (Ken) & PonyMura (Gief)
xpre04 Meijin (Ken) & Chamu (Chun) vs. Sashishi (Ryu) & Taira (Dic)
xpre05 Nikaiten (Boxer) & Tashita (Blanka) vs. Kusumondo (Honda) & Danjiri Dhalsim
xpre06 AKIRA (Ryu) & Nakamura (Cammy) vs. Shiro (Ryu) & Pyonkichi (Ryu)
xpre07 Yuubou (Fei) & Noguchi (Fei) vs. Takiba (Blanka) & Sekai (O.Honda)

xpre08 Seki & Kachu vs. Danryu (Ryu) & Gian (Sim)
xpre09 Mayumura (Ryu) & Kurahashi (Ryu) vs. AFO (Blanka) & Komoda Blanka

xpre10 Nikaiten & Tashita vs. AFO & Komoda

Notes:
They didn't up any of the semifinal matches? AFO OCV'ed the DJ/Claw team. No small feat for Blanka.

Not sure about some of the names: for Ren and Nama, in particular, I'm guessing.

N Oah <>? Anioah (= Aniken's nickname when he's using boxer)
Don't know.

Chamu = One of the few elite female players.
FWIW, she beat Aniken, Daigo and Kurahashi back-to-back at the club sega event this past spring.

I guess Takiba is T.Akiba the big time ST guru.

Good stuff. Also good to see that I'm not the only 'Sim who has a bit of trouble with mass chicken winging.
Gian should've just kept sliding instead of trying to throw.

Ouroborus

i'm surprised there werent any o. sagats. like vega, he has some braindead tactics but still, sim kills everyone in the end of the day.

ryu, guile and sim seems to be the most popular characters in japan.

right now, i'm not too sure is bison even top tier. he gets locked down really easily and has no reversal against most stuff in the game.

fei vs bison seems to be a fun match. i wonder who comes out on top tho. fei has an invincible anti air thats safe even when blocked and can lock bison down with chickenwing kicks but bison has slightly longer pokes and a much bigger throw range. i think bison edges fei out by a bit.

O. Sagat is soft banned in Japan, which basically means you can use him, but you're gonna get the evil eye from everyone in the arcade.
Choi said when he visited that they don't use him, because they think he's too easy/basic/boring.

Ouroborus
01-07-2007, 02:00 PM
that i know and i find that really weird since vega is not softbanned.

Well maybe he is but hes still used, just not as much as other characters tho and like NKI said, japan have some of the cheapest players in the world.

In part 7 of those vids CigarBob just uploaded, I think you can see an example of that odd extra-large vulnerability box in the recovery of T.Hawk's crouching strong that NKI featured in his last video. Around 00:41-00:42, T. Hawk gets hit by a jab during the recovery of his crouching strong from more than half a screen away.

Great videos, thanks for sharing, CigarBob.

There's a program called AVReplay which allows you to rip web streams. The demo limits you to 5MB (I believe) per download, which is actually pretty useful for stuff like match vids, music vids and such. If that doesn't offer enough download to get the complete vids, you could of course always pay for it. But either way, this is the best utility I've found for ripping web streams.

Meh...Dhalsim's like the best character in the game any ways. He needs at least a few things against him.

Asalamualaikum!

I posted a handful of old movies on my broke-down putfile page. Mostly X-Mania 1.

http://www.putfile.com/nohoho

Don't know who all the players are but Aniken wailing on some team (EDIT: nvm) is a gem. God mix-up! Also Team Kawachikko ie: Komoda Mayakon Kusumondo were in action that year, too. I have some more of them I hope to post soon.

Update: Couple more still... including a vid featuring Kurohyou -- female claw player.

great stuff, but can u upload a format which I can download to my computer?

Thanks!

From another thread:

On the X-Mania 7 DVD Otochun and Gian discuss a phenomenon called "Komoda Magic." They were commenting specifically on his batshit insane round-start jump ins but it's all the same stuff.

When you think about it in terms of conditioning... what kind of horrors has Komoda inflicted on these people in the past that make them hesitate so much as the round begins? Scary.
I meant to ask this earlier, as I haven't seen the games and was just curious, but what is he doing at the round starts that's scaring his opponents so much? Just something like jumping a fireball using anticipation or lightning reflexes and opening the round up with a big combo like j.fierce, c.forward XX Ball?

Well, Komoda's round-start antics are simply mysterious. There's no damn reason The SuperStar boxer should crouch for a minute and then block a Blanka jump in as the round begins. That's just Komoda Magic.

Having said that, one of the most important concepts in fighting games is something I like to think of in terms of CPU load. A better player will have a clearer head and be more able to focus on the most important shit at any given moment.

The seed for this idea was something Chensor discussed a long-ass time ago during SFA2 days. If you were using Zangief in that game, you wanted to jump in, right, but you first needed to get your opponent to focus on the ground game. With standing medium kicks and crouching fierces? This principle works in any fighting game with any characters.

I use Blanka, right, and there are a couple Ryu players here in New York that just have my number. Now, even though I'm getting beat, I'm aware enough to see that they're clearly running at "lower CPU load" than me. Like:

CPU(brain): XXXXXXXXXX
nohoho: X = footsie, jump ins, trickery, bites, etc.

XXXXOOOOOO
flashg: X = st, O = should I have a turkey sandwich for dinner?

So that sucks. Heh. But there are plenty of Ryu players that I can wail on:

XXXXXOOOOO
nohoho: X = footsie, hops, etc. O = did this fucker use akuma against me last week? should I have a turkey sandwich for dinner? etc. hehe

XXXXXXXXXX
ryu player: X = footsie, not getting bitten, fireballs, not getting bitten <- no room for DPs

In the first case I'm not jumping in cold and not getting DPed in a million years. In the latter case I can jump at dude and he'll just block it because his mental shit is in the red.

Komoda, as one of the top of the top Kansai players, probably winds up in the latter situation even against A-class opponents. So that might explain some of the stuff he gets away with?

(FWIW, I think this cognitive psych stuff is a big part of what makes players like Justin and Daigo so dangerous. They got their mental game really streamlined. Plenty of CPU power to spare, as it were.)

EDIT:
There's a case in point today @ mikado:
http://blog.mi-ka-do.net/?eid=333724
In the sagat-cammy fight (fifth file down) the cammy player blocks a couple of jump ins because he's thinking about other stuff (sandwiches!) Great finish in that match. Players for these vids listed on ze blog.

Very interesting post! That theory is a good read. I've noticed in my own games that I sometimes miss anti-air Thrust Kicks just because I'm not even thinking about using it.

Oh, and those Mikado videos are golden, like always. I'd never seen Shacho (purple Cammy in game 2) play before, but he's great with the Cannon Drill and rocked the crossup so well that his mixups looked like something out of the Versus series of games, haha. Toutanki was also as amazing as usual.

Speaking of the recently mentioned Mikado vids, why is Kurahashi playing Ryu rather than Guile, or does he only play Guile at major ST tournies or has the unthinkable happened and he has switched mains? Anyone know whats up?

He plays Ryu well enough, so I guess he just has fun with a different character from his main. In all the major tournaments he uses Guile. Smaller tourneys he might switch around.

Those of us that are exposed to ST only as movie hounds don't get to see much sub character action. Footage of Tama's Chun or Pony's Hawk (at master secret cup, I think) are rare gems. Stuff like Kurahashi Ken (!) or Mayakon Guile doesn't seem to make it to the net.

Speaking of that, there should be some vids from a recent Mikado solo 2on coming soon. Noguchi Fei/O.Sagat (<- standing in for CE sagat to practice for SBO, I guess) Also Taira Dictator/New Sagat, hopefully Mattsun Ken/Cammy.

After completing the super motion on the joystick, you actually have 11 frames to hit the button, so you can take a noticeable step forward before doing the super. I've also seen Tama do it with Boxer's super after low Jabs. (They do it to fake out the opponent...make 'em think a throw is coming.)

We've been doing some analysis, based on a post of John Choi's that a friend came across somewhere (don't know if it was on here or not...), stating that there is a 4 frame delay whenever a character lands from jump, or is hit out of the air and lands. In testing this theory, we were actually seeing a 5-7 frame delay. Our testing consisted of jumping then holding the stick either left or right while in the air, and continuing to hold the joystick in that position until the character had landed and started walking. We tested straight-up jumps, diagonal jumps and getting hit out of the air by a dragon punch. We tested with Ryu, Ken and Zangief, on SSF2X rom. Essentially, in this change of state, from air to ground, the character is stuck in complete vulnerable state for 5-7 frames.

We tested in this manner, because we cannot be certain when the directional input actually registers, and so can be assured that the directional input is activated well in advance of actually being on the ground.

So, eliminating a delay in input, the question arises if this delay exists for all "state changes". In the specific example of this super "trick", is there a full 11 frames that input is accepted and will activate the super...and/or are 5-7 frames of that time completely vulnerable?

You know anything about this NKI? Now that we understand this principal, at least for jumping and air-to-ground "state changes", we can actually see when the character is just standing there completely vulnerable for a brief moment in time.

Essentially, in this change of state, from air to ground, the character is stuck in complete vulnerable state for 5-7 frames.Hrm...I think your testing method was flawed. For one thing, walking is not instant (it has start-up). For another thing, we already know that in ST, you can reversal after being knocked out of the air. Lastly, [getting knocked out of the air] and [landing from a jump] are not the same thing. There are no landing frames when you get knocked out of the air (therefor you can do reversals upon landing), but there are landing frames when you jump (therefor you can't block upon landing).

I want to make a ST video compilation DVD viewing the greatest and most difficult combosYou don't plan on selling this DVD, right?

For Dictator his standing short/multi standing shorts in tight is beasty and leads into charge combos and throws very well.

Your friend using Guile should try out the knee cannon (with Turbo guile I believe it's back and standing short) to maintain a charge and rush forward after a thrown SB. (In close a the standing roundhouse does the same thing and pokes)

BTW, who is your main?

Which Guile player are you referring to? If it's Jed, he's been only playing the game since pre-T8, so about 8 months. My main is Chun-Li and I've been only using Dictator for three days before these sets got recorded so back then before this, I didn't have an alternate character lined up for me.

i know how to do it......ive even tryed it out a long time ago, my point is that its a x3 charge...it shoudnt be possible from what i remember, its max2.. in other words, after the headbut + dash, the super shouldnt come out even if you do it right. is this false? im gonna try it out in traningmode later. maybe this is only hsf2, i'll try it in ST also.
It's 100% possible to do it on ST, no idea about HSF2 since I don't touch the game, but I see no reason why it wouldn't work on it.

I think he is referring to videos like this (though not necessarily this specific video) that require you to download a specific codec in order to play it.

Three sets on 12-22-07:
http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=7C699500C8E42100

I managed to record seven sets of first-to-10 on 12-27-07. Pretty much the longest ST casual I've ever hosted and the most serious Canadian ST casual done in years. Footage also includes David Spence (from Philadelphia) and Brian Feldstein (from Berkeley/Boston). They were in the area for the holidays so I gave them a shout a few days in advance. I'll put all these matches up (nearly 3 hours) on both Youtube and Megaupload in about 1-2 weeks (2 1/2 weeks max).

You don't generally need kick rushes against zangief so you should be charging TAP with kicks while doing the low rushes so that on knockdown you can hit with a 5-Final. Also after a blocked low rush, st. Fierce is a good "placeholder" move that will either hit them and do hella good damage, or get blocked and let you charge for another rush or headbutt.

Kick rush super beats clothesline btw. I just know the Rog vs Gief matchup very well because a local player has a sick gief and I play against him with Rog a lot.

i bearly do kick rushes and i know they aint TOO good, that is. but they are good sometimes imo, sometimes for an AA for long distance when you just KNOW/sees that he's gonna jump.

and yea! i know the thing with st.fierce aswell...think i got it on other vids where im playing, have a look around, i just somehow didnt do them that set.. maybe 1 or something, didnt feel no need for them maybe.

one thing tho, i somehow (dont know where or WHY) recall that rogs super (with kick) didnt work on OLD GIEF! so yep, that was a huge mistake.. maybe would have gotten 1-3 more supers, could have changed the outcome but more than that he'd learn to not do lariat while i got the super bar. cool that you're a rog player yourself btw

The kick rush has two versions, if you charge and then press d/f+short, it will be a version that recovers faster and knocks down. This move is GREAT because it has so little recovery time that you use it to get in close and then immediately do f+MP headbutt throw. Try it.

Criticism welcome, I know I'm a beginner and can improve a ton. BTW I usually am better at getting d+forward>d+strong>low rush out, I got the first two hits and missed my low rush a lot that tournament for some reason.

A couple of things....

1 - If you are poking out of hit range: ie - your poke won't connect - use the crouching forward more than the strong. While the strong has greater range (less relevance if you are poking out of range) the forward has the ability to hit or snuff counter pokes. You can actually beat out other characters ducking forwards clean.

2 - Now this is somewhat a scrubby suggestion, but it works nonetheless as long as you aren't fighting elite players - abuse Boxer's throw. If you get an opponent in the throw simply crossover, tick and throw again. Sometimes you should just keep doing it until your opponent breaks it. One of the setups I use is throw>walking crossover>meaty ducking strong> walk up throw or another meaty ducking strong into a high rush>throw. (high rush should wiff unless opponent stands for some reason) Obviously you can come up with your own variation, maybe add some jump tactics in there.

Try it and see what kind of results you get.

Airthrow
01-31-2008, 01:50 PM
I used to use the throw, crossup tick throw a lot, but it really wasn't improving my gameplay to do so... at least up here there's one player I have very little chance of beating, a couple others that I can beat if I play my 100%...and everyone else.

Pretty much everyone in the top 4 who I would need tricks to beat is very good at counter throwing now, you really have to work for throws nowadays. But for sure if I see opportunities I will.

thanks, more videos from the last tourney and money matches will be up tommorow.

Criticism welcome

Cool vids, thanks for posting!

As far as critiques go, the one thing I noticed is that you(and others in these vids) seemed a bit super happy. Like, someone would do a super, it'd get blocked, and then the other person would immediately do their super to get the block damage. It's a fine technique, and I probably use it too much myself. But the thing is, especially with boxer, is that by holding onto the super you effectively limit the moves that your opponent can do. And often times, this can be better than getting a bit of damage. Just something to consider...

Good matches.

I was going to mention something about using the ducking forward but I noticed the date of the MM. Suffice to say if you play him again, you will definitely see the difference the ducking forward makes. I noticed about a dozen spots where you both poked at range and whiffed on each other. A ducking forward in those spots would have ate his poke.

Hopefully you get more matches against this guy.

DVD recorder. The ones with no hard drive are cheap and a couple of DVD RW's and you got yourself 8+ hours of digital recording power. Easy to transfer to the PC as well. Something like DVD decrypter will copy the file to your PC and a free Divx or Xvid encoder does the rest.

I can give you a little advice for the Gief part. The Ken player liked to stick out crouching forward a lot against you, which you can easily blow through with crouching roundhouse. You might trade, but your sweep will do more damage and get a knockdown, so don't worry about that. You can also beat crouching attacks like that with max-range standing short or go over

I'd also like to see more walk-up spd. Once you got within a certain range, the Ken player liked to sit there crouch blocking in expectation of a sweep or a tick; walk up and spd him for doing that. I think you tried that once and it ended up in green hand, so if you have difficulty doing it, practice practice practice.

Also, the Ken player ticked into throw against you a few times, but that shouldn't work against Zangief. When the opponent hits you, you should do a quick option-select 360 + p ending in crouch block, so that if the opponent continues the combo or poke string you'll just keep getting hit or keep blocking, but if the opponent leaves an instant of empty space to go for a throw or a jump you'll spd him (note: sometimes dangerous against dragon punch characters). At the same time, I want fewer wake-up spd attempts, especially against characters who have attacks they can do from outside your range or dragon punches they can do to keep you honest.

I also want more antiair lariats against jumping attacks and better punishment for whiffed dragon punches in the form of atomic suplexes (if in range) or spd. Oh, and always do green hand if your command grab leaves you at a distance from the opponent.

Appreciate it!

I felt I could have played Gief better but, I had already lost 2 in set so, I switched to my other main, Rog. Thanks for the advice on Gief though, I will work on him more. I fell as though Gief and Ryu(not seen obviously) are my two characters that I need to work on more.

On Gief: Can s.mk be used as a solid anti-c.mk from shotos too?? I noticed that it fits the purpose well or should I always just go for the trade knock down (c.rh)??
At around 2:15, is that the green hand you were speaking about?? If so that wasnt a 360 attempt, I was just trying to chip him out but, looking back it does look like I was in range for a 360. I think in the match as a whole, I wasnt playing my game enough. We both play alot and I know he likes to try to reversal the tick - 360's alot, which would explain all of the s.sk to c.rh. I just want him to block more, play safer so I could get more 360's but, my plan couldnt materialize quick enough.

Anyone with any advice for 'Rog???

Edited for a more specific response.

You should go on youtube and search for videos by XTG (youtube.com/airthrow).

Ken vs Zangief is a veeery hard matchup indeed, but that Ken player didn't really play the most dangerous, zangief killing way by throwing that many slow fireballs. After knockdown, you should really mix it up more and use safe jumps and tick throws more.

After MOST of his normals being blocked you should look for SPDs. Also, practice your reversal throw timing a lot, you shouldn't ever be getting kneebashed by Ken, because SPDs will beat Kneebashes on the same frame, every time.

Don't be so afraid to jump in, but pick the right time. If your only method of getting in is lariats, than it's much easier for him to figure out a zoning strategy than if you mix lariats, jumping, walk in+cr. RH, walk forward+st. MK, etc.

Practice your SPD. practice practice practice.

Good stuff though! :karate:

How do you select O ken?

Select Ken by pressing start. Then LLLR Jap, or Fierce?

Jump LK ticks are useful, and you should walking SPD more often. You were in range a couple times but decided to lariat or tick.

On Gief: Can s.mk be used as a solid anti-c.mk from shotos too?? I noticed that it fits the purpose well or should I always just go for the trade knock down (c.rh)??
For sure. I wrote in that post, "You can also beat crouching attacks like that with max-range standing short or go over..." and then I guess just forgot to finish the sentence (?), but I meant to finish it with "or go over it with standing forward." That's a big part of Gief's footsie games.

Gief v Ken is pretty even, it's just that Gief can't really go for safe jumps or ticks into spd very often. He has to rely more on footsies and spacing and creating guessing games between tick into spd and tick crouching roundhouse or crouching forward xx kick lariat (if very close).

Looks like your skill levels are about the same. Now make each other better!

EDIT: More constructive stuff = Vega needs more cr.mp, tell him he doesn't have to use specials non-stop, Ken needs less random super and needs more fireballs, bait a wall dive and DP, he shouldn't be getting that many free jumpins.

I'd say start using your Chun ASAP. We all learned the hard way, he shouldn't be any different.

You were on the left? You have an awfully wide idea of what constitutes a scrub. Those 5-hit crossover combos were money, and doing combos that involve cancelling into super are no joke either.

Sargoth
03-28-2008, 02:31 AM
Yeah on the left. Well , its the fact that i cant space at all , and my DP ratio is way to low to do decent corner traps ( seems DP`ing is harder in ST... ). Ok so I got a lucky combo here and there , but the mistakes I did more than "make up" for that.

Thnx tho , always appreciate feedback :wgrin:

Wow, good matches! Never seen Justin pick the boxer before...

Such a strange match, even for a mirror. It seemed like you could have gotten a number of safe jumps but didn't. You can even do it after the throw, though obviously that is just one option of many.

And after the whiffed kick rush on wakeup, shouldn't you be able to counter-throw him on reaction if he goes for one? At least, it almost never seems to work when I try it. *shrug*

But Old Sagat has been a big problem of mine, so great job handling that and thanks for uploading!

That's one of those "yeah, but good luck" ones... you have to also guess which version of short kick rush they did or else you're standing up into his phatty elbow, because one of the short kick rushes recovers faster.

edit: on wakeup the proper thing to do is reversal the kick rush, it only whiffs if you're ducking...

Komoda's Blanka is amazing. The effectiveness with which he plays disadvantageous matchups is mind-shattering.

Even if you don't pick up Blanka seriously, do toy around with him, man. The character is just way too much fun to play!

It was silly of me to not realize you were all of course already talking about those vids in here.

Good matches, who was that first ryu player? I've never seen so many hurricanes used in a single round except for when daigo uses him but he does right before landing so it barely comes out, and I really liked how he stuck out cr jabs after crossing up so nuki couldn't walkup throw him. I'm sure he knows much betetr then I ever will but just wondering why did he always go for overhead after super? He didn't seem close to land it before the blockstun of super bomb ended so wouldn't he be better off sticking out cr mk?

That last match played out almost exactly like when I play against blanka in hf, stupid jumping attacks stuff TU cleanly unless I do it early:bluu: but it's good to see an n.sagat player besides yaya finally.
