Is X-Mania an annual tournament? Is it the biggest event for ST in Japan?
Yeah, X-MANIA is like the Japanese Evolution, but the only game is ST (and AE for kicks). Aside from SBO, it's probably the biggest annual tourney in Japan.

__________________________________________________ ______
The craziest thing about these results is a TWO-MAN DOUBLE O.HAWK TEAM taking 3rd place. (Keep in mind this was a 3-on-3.) They beat Gian's team and Kusumondo's team. CRAAAAAAAAZY...
Also, most people know Toutanki as one of the best Hawks in the world, but probably most people don't know that his name means The East Horseman. In this tournament, there were three other fellows: The West Horseman, The North Horseman, and The South Horseman. (But none of them played Hawk...)
More detailed report to come when I have time.
Now get off my J.
thanks so much for those NKI. Only one CE bison in the top3! O. Hawk team!! new sagat in the second place team!? Is that because of a softban or have they discovered how awesome his super is? Also, the double hawk team, are you normally allowed to have more than one of the same character in your team?
Quick question, when the DVD's are released, where would I go about getting them? I know you can pick up SBO stuff fairly easily but I've never seen X mania dvd's anywhere except ebay.
look forward to the report :)

Why N. Sagat instead of O. Sagat?
And what are the advantages of using O. Hawk? That's particularly interesting to me, cos I wanna learn Hawk just for shits and giggles.

Well besides having more invicibility on his DP move, O. Hawk has better normals. s.Roundhouse and s.Strong hits crouching characters (most of them unlike N.Hawk). O.Hawk can easily crossup with jump short/down.strong/down.fierce than his new counterpart.
In general most of his normals have better hit boxes and more reach than N.Hawk. Most regular Hawk players pick O.Hawk (well at least the ones I know)...N.Hawk is just cool for landing his super.

I was just curious if any one could help explain why i never see too many too many claw, dic, and DJ players in tourney's anymore? In my opinion all three are top tier characters (along with boxer, ryu, and sim) but outside of boss man graham wolfe use of claw in the evo west 2k6 finals and ?was it mike watson? use of claw in the evo 2k4, i don't ever see any claw, dic, or DJ usage whatsoever. And only now am i seeing claw in the 1st place rankings thanks to the japanese players. I'd appreciate anyone's input on this question.

Nice shit!
nice to see my two home boys ARG and Otochun taking the win and gett'n second even on AE
New Sagat and O.Hawk's i definantly need to see the videos!
new sagat in the second place team!? Is that because of a softban or have they discovered how awesome his super is?I dunno. Maybe he just likes having that 5-hit uppercut...
Also, the double hawk team, are you normally allowed to have more than one of the same character in your team?Normally no, but lately the Japs have started allowing it, in addition to allowing character switching in singles tourneys. However, there are still no double elimination tourneys...:sad:
Quick question, when the DVD's are released, where would I go about getting them?I dunno, but I'll post when I find out.
I was just curious if any one could help explain why i never see too many too many claw, dic, and DJ players in tourney's anymore?In Japan, there are lots of Claw and Dic players, and a good amount of DeeJay players, too. In America, I dunno why more people don't choose Claw/Dic...they are mad good, and everyone knows it.
DeeJay, I think people just under-rate him. He's not top tier, but he's really good. Probably top of the middle tier.

This is not a word-for-word translation of the report. Just the highlights that are worth mentioning.
From the X-MANIA VII AE report:
-AE had 27 teams.
-Blocks were decided randomly, and only one team from each block could advance, so there were some black blocks of death.
-Block A had Oto Chun's team and Noguchi's team. Oto Chun's team takes it.
-In the finals for Block B, a team comprised of three guys I've never heard of beat Yuu Vega's team, surprising everyone there.
-Block C had Shooting D's team, and Gian's team. Shooting D's team wins the first two, then Gian comes in and sweeps Shooting D's whole team.
-In the round-robin finals between Oto Chun's team, Gian's team, and random guys I've never heard of, the random guys lose to both of the other teams, so it comes down to Oto Chun's team vs. Gian's team. Once again, Gian's team is down 0-2, but Gian comes in and sweeps Oto Chun's whole team. (Interesting aside: Gian did the same thing in set two of the grand finals of the Evo2005 ST team tourney. Chikyuu and I lost to Choi, then Gian came in and swept Choi, Valle, and Watson. Dude is a MONSTER...)

__________________________________________________ _________
And here are the highlights from the X-MANIA VII ST report:
-Biggest turnout ever, with 37 teams.
-Block A had Oto Chun's team, which was the favorite to win the whole thing. In the finals for Block A, it was The Super Star/ARG/Oto Chun vs. Chamu/Muteki Guile/Shooting D. The Super Star beats Chamu and Muteki Guile, then Shooting D beats The Super Star and ARG. Oto Chun comes in and takes care of business, winning Block A.
-In the finals for Block B, it was Kusumondo (Honda)/Komoda Blanka/Pony Gief vs. Noguchi (Claw)/The Shop Keeper (Ryu)/The Doctor (Dhalsim). It came down to Pony Gief vs. The Doctor, and in a really close fight, Pony Gief squeezed out the W, and apparently he went nuts afterwards.
-Block C was dominated by a crazy-ass double O.Hawk team of Toutanki and K.
-Block D had Gian's team which was different from his team in the AE tourney. This time he teamed up with Yuu Vega and Tuujii. (That's a pretty NASTY team to have to face...) They overwhelmed everyone in Block D, for the win.
-Daigo (Ryu)/Yaya (N.Sagat)/Ani Ken take Block E, easy.
-The finals consisted of 5 teams, but it came down to Oto Chun's team vs. Toutanki's team. K took out The Super Star, but then ARG came in and beat K and Toutanki to win the tourney.
-Toutanki's team made everyone think that O.Hawk is actually a good character. o_O!!

He's named Mayakon. He apparently switched to ken because it was way too hard to fight dhalsim with hawk.
I don't know if it has been discussed here before, but does anybody know why Toutanki and K played S Hawk ? The alternate color sure looks neat, but I doubt this is the reason why they choosed him.

S/O Hawk has better pokes and a better cross-up than ST Hawk. P.Jones your meant to the be a french ST legend, thought you would of known this.
Also WW gief aint bad, his SPD leaves you practically on top of your opponent ready to tick into SPD again and again, also got tons of range. His lariat really lets him down though, can't move while lariating and can't use it as a reversal. Its hard getting in, but all you gotta do is land one SPD anywhere on the screen and you'll probably win the round.
WW.Gief is pretty fucked in terms of lariat. I dunno why that Rog kept trying turn punches.
But what do I know. I'm just a scrub.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but can't you still half-reversal with WW characters? I know it won't say "reversal" on the screen, but if you execute the special at the first possible moment, won't it still work?
Similar to how you can "reversal" throw..... if you throw at the first opportunity when you become vulnerable, you can throw right? (throwing Sim out of that meaty slide during noogie trap for example)
So why couldn't you do the same with an invunerable special? Does this make sense? If you can throw, you should be able to execute a special too, right?
Professor Jones
02-10-2007, 04:30 AM
Reko :
I knew about the crossup, but new hawk's mk crossup is very good too. Can you give more details about the other moves that are different ? Which moves exactly ? Do they have extra range ? I'd like to test this.

On the subject of O. Hawk's changes, I'm pretty sure that S.Hk is not the only move that went from a mid to a high...I'm pretty sure that the same is true with S.Mp, and maybe even S.Mk.
Professor Jones
02-10-2007, 09:04 PM
Hawk
strong/fierce DPs less invincible. can't go through fbs
weaker splash (down+fierce in the air) no cross up
cross up jump forward in its place
close rh misses crouching characters but trades with fbs?
low jab no longer almighty
What makes S hawk's low jab almighty ? If only we could see the hitboxes of the S chars, that would make things easier.

02-12-2007, 10:21 AM
Snip....
Here is a nother misc. note for you Dr. Jones
O.Hawk has a very easy Dizzy combo.
IIRC:
Cross-up splash>ducking jab x1~2> feirce DP (2 hits) = Dizzy (45 % life) :sweat:
That splash is beasty...
Anyway, while dizzy, you can walk up and repeat compbo or crossp up > standing fowrawd> negitive edge SPD
Either way the oppenent is lossing ~ 90% of thier life and is knocked down. :sad:
Anyway you cut it... your dishing lots of pain.

It is only 3 DVD's. One for the HSF2 3v3 and two for the ST 3v3 and some times 3v2. EVERY match from the tourny is on this. All bracket play all the way to the finals.

One note. The DVD's are not reagon free. So you must have a no reagon DVD player. Wish I had read this earlier. My brother just got his DVD in the mail and it's Region 2 (Asia). But, the site he bought it from (PlayAsia, IIRC) said that it was Region 0, which is the only reason he went through with the purchase really.
So yeah, you need a region-free DVD player to play it. Guess he'll be watching it on his computer.

Another word of warning, don't "read" the manual it comes with, don't even open it 'till after you watch the footage, it contains spoilers. :blush:
I just got mine today but wont watch it until my friend comes along as we need 2 study for Evo 2007 and also I paid for the cheapest shipping
Abhi you gotta come to UK events first to play guys like desk and I at SF2 before you jet off to america.

Why do UK peeps PM me or quote my shit about coming to their events
I will only go when I aint working, There is no UK event that I will ever take a day off for work, if I am working it.
At the end of the day Evo is just a event thats part of my one month holiday to America.
The way you guys PM me or quote me makes me laugh, like we are friends, I mean I dont even know what colour or sex you people are.
We never spoken WHEN I have attended UK events in the past but yet when I have been to America, people welcome me and talk to me and shit and thats a country I have been to once. I certainly dont go just for the games and shit, part of it is for the interaction. If I want to go just games, I will just go to an arcade.
You say attend your events, well I am off on the 25th March, lets see what happens then ?

Just use DVD Decrypter to rip it to an .iso image, changing the region to yours, then burn that image to a dual-layer DVD. It is seriously not that difficult or as big of a deal as it is being made out to be. And yes, the gameplay is phenomenal.

I got mine. Yay! I tried some codes to make my DVD player region free, but they didn't work. So, I just started watching it on my computer. If that becomes annoying I'll just rip it and burn a new set.
So far it seems pretty cool. There's some bizarre character choices in the Hyper SF2 matches, which is fun to watch. A team with 2 cammy's?! Good stuff.
do all matches have that red/blue border (like in the preview vids) or can you turn that off?
NoAffinity
03-12-2007, 12:16 PM
Don't know what the preview vid looked like, but they've got a border with the character mug shots to the left (color-correct, even) and player names below (mostly in kanji and/or other non-English characters, naturally). I gotta say, their video production is improving tremendously. I will get a screenshot up, for those interested, when time permits.

EDIT *** Just finished disk one! ********
<<<<<<<<Spoilers>>>>>>>
Wow! ST Dhalsim players needs to watch this and commit the all of the Gian matches memory. Even if your an expert player you'll just enjoy watching Sim played so well. :karate:
For average players, the disk is full of all the strats people ask about. "How do I beat Blanka/ Honda/ Chun/ Claw with Dhalsim..." Using some great technique and strategy (and a little luck):sweat: , Gian beats these characters several times through out the disk. You can really learn a lot. I did at least.:lovin:

But just to make things clear, I aint trying to be your friend and i am not pretending like i know you, i'm just saying theres Sf2 comp in England. Yes we have never spoken at any events, but so what, you should come and support the scene, and you will no doubt chat to loads of people. Besides you gotta make the effort at these events, you can't just stand there and not say anything and hope people will just approach you and know who you are. When you was in America you no doubt told people that you was coming and that your from England etc etc. But at UK events, 99% of players are from england, so it aint exactly a big deal you know.
And no one is forcing you to take a day off work or put your life on hold to come either, its like you sound insulted that we would choose to hold an event on a day you are working.
No offense dude, but you seem like you got abit of a chip on your shoulder.

LOOOOOOOOOOOOL, but does it matter wot sex or colour these people are, ok, maybe ones sex might matter depending on what mans are looking for. But, if you are looking to improve then it does make sense to go to the events and play mans. And i have found that most of the people are quite friendly at these events

LOL, I got a chip, I aint the one that came with the saying
''Abhi you gotta come to UK events first to play guys like desk and I at SF2 before you jet off to america.''
Are the Diego Maradona or Pele of SF that I NEED to play you before I am allowed to go to America.
Evo is an event that I want to experience once at least in my life, not a place where I stay in a cave and practice 12 hours a day for years on end so I can saviour that one moment in my life and know it was all worth it.
Also I never made out that I am mad cause UK events run on a day that I work, all I am saying I dont hold a UK event high enough that I will take a day off, thats all, so if I dont attend thats the reason and I certainly dont use that excuse either.
Also I know about the SF scene, I used to go play in Strafford in 2003 on 3S. I am on neo empire anyway, so I know what happens.

I want 2 see whats Evo is like,
if I said I wanted to go enter a Evo type tournament for football in Brazil JUST BECAUSE I CAN and some mans told me ''well boy, you got to play me and next mans in England before you go there''.
At the end of the day I would tell mans, ''are you paying for me or do I need to qualify here before I am allowed to go ?''

No Joke! Wata Would open with the scissor kicks. The risk/ reward is just to good. Worst that happens to Vega is getting knocked out of the air, the best is a dizzy and instant kill.
That DJ was crazy. I think it was a Fei Long match where DJ had a tick of life and just went for a cross up and straight out killed FL with 75% of his life with j.mk>c.wpx2>Punches (4hits)...
That guy had one strategy and one only... Go for the combo...
I watched that kill several times. It was an insane amount life. :sweat:
Not to mentionthat it is REALLY hard to combo. I tried it a couple of time in Training mode. I did not hit with any constancy.
What did you think of the WW Zangief? That guy pulled some out some crazy wins.

I'm a lot better with written japanese than spoken but I typed up some items from the commentary/audio. NB: the audio tracks are 1: game 2: gian, otochun, inh dude commentary and 3: crowd (for the finals)
I think NKI got a mention. re: oji "grandpa" Ryu? Somehow.
Gian re: HSF win: "Well, it's HSF, so I was just glad it was over."
Otochun says he was nervous fighting Master Foosuke DJ.
re: K Hawk vs. Sennari Blanka:
O.Hawk's crouching jab makes things difficult for Blanka.
(I guess that one move flips things from '(big) advantage blanka' to 'advantage hawk'?! weird...)
People tease yaya Sagat about his lack of Tiger Uppercuts. That's why people were cheering when he hit Tasaka Cammy and Inro O.Chun with them.
re: AshiKouTanaka, the O.Ryu player in the ST tournament. His name is like "Tanaka likes the leg" seemingly a reference to his fondness for the vertical jump roundhouse. Pretty funny how well he uses that attack.
K: "We made it this far - now we're going to win and embarrass everyone."
Daigo: "My teammates ...[crap, I can't make this out. too much background noise grr.]... I'm having fun."
More later, maybe. Otochun and Gian make a lot of interesting observations about which characters have the advantage in various matchups. Also: certain characters/players specific people (including themselves) do well/struggle against.

Er, what? You immediately make no sense. Usually if people find someone with similar interests, then they let them know what's going on - there's no harm in doing so. Networking has never been a bad thing, you're just being a consummate Jabberwocky for no reason.

~~~Some spoilers below~~~~
I'm having a blast watching these videos. I'm only halfway through disc 2, but there's been some really crazy stuff so far. A two person Hawk/Hawk team in a 3v3 tourney...winning matches!?! Several Cammy's playing really mean. Daigo just beasting on people. GOH Ken almost taking out a whole team of really top notch players. A guy landing Zangief's super twice in one match. Hawk beating up Dhalsim. Just crazy stuff! :looney:
And I've gotta ask, does anyone know what's up with the O.Ryu guy? And I don't mean his straight up jump RH, which does seem to work surprisingly well. I mean, why play O.Ryu instead of N.Ryu? Does he have something special I'm not aware of?
O.Ryu's fireballs are faster and have less recovery, aswell as his dp being more invincible.
I believe his Jup.RH has no damage [taken] hit box on his extended leg, or it is much smaller than the ST. version.
Also his cross-up Hurricane Kick has some different properties. It can hit you twice from behind as a cross up.
more re: AshiKouTanaka
In an old (1999!) post on t.akiba's bbs the man himself says he's been using "white" ryu since the early days. Even though he's weaker than N.Ryu, in his case using O.Ryu doubles his fighting spirit. Or so he says. heh
There's a lot more of him (normal nickname: Ashitana) and his crazy jump roundhouses @ master secret cup. Check out the first of the links in r3ko's .sig if you haven't already.
@fatboy: More good stuff. Didn't realize he had that many upsides. I still can't see giving up his super or his other new stuff though.
On the hyper dvd..
Audio track
game/commentary/crowd (this one only applys to the last stage of the tournament)
Play the whole thing from beginning to end
1st round
1/4 finals (of each group)
semi finals
Block finals (A/B and C)
I can read Japanese, but I didn't see anyway to turn off the border. I think they did that on purpose. That way even if the vids get uploaded to Youtube or whatever, it'll still have the X-MANIA logo in the vid.
DVDs aren't very smart, the only thing you can turn on/off are tracks labeled as subtitles, but it doesn''t alter the rest of the video, so if they made the border a subtitle, and you turned it off, you would just get a black border.
If they wanted to have a fullscreen option, they would have had to basically add all the footage again as a second track and let you switch between them, which would double the size of the dvd.
While I can see the downsides of borders in match videos, i would like to use one in a combo vid to provide more information, possible combo transcripts, hand motions, etc... My problem is that i can't do combos, so if anyone wants to make a vid lmk =P.
I played it with VLC, a freeware player that doesn't care about region encoding. That player also played videos fine for me that other players had troubles with. Maybe give that a whirl and see if it works? I don't have the URL handy, but it should be easy to find with google :wgrin:
