I play it at FFA when someone else will play. X-Rose and A-Chun.
N - I'd like to see a resurgence, I used to love this thing.
I'm gonna try and have a big unofficial A3 tournament next year at Evo, since the SNK guys put me to shame this year. Hella people playing KOF, that new 3D KOF, Samurai ShowdownV, even that one game with Karnov that I don't remember the name of. I whipped out A3 on the Saturn, and played with ONE other dude, and then ended up playing by myself for 45 minutes, and then someone had BAS come by and beat me for use of the TV. Sad. There was even a pretty big X-Men vs Street Fighter Tournament, so it seems I need to rep A3 a little harder (ie. actually do something).

I still do as well. A-Guy, A-Sim, V-Ryu, and A-Karin. I'm not that great on V-ism. Still learning after not having played for a good while. Its a great game, but there are a lot of crazy things in the game that put me off every now and then.

I play everyday. I use, in no particular order, A-Gen, A-Chun, A-Charlie, A-Ryu and sometimes A-Akuma, A-Gief and A-Sodom. As you can see, I'm scared to death of V-ism and I suck at it.

I still play on a regular basis, and it's still my favorite 2D fighter to date. I feel the game did not get enough time in the "spotlight". It wasn't popular for very long.
However, I too, suck at V-ism, but I have absolutely no interest in using it.
I stick with X-Guile, A-Rolento, X or A-Dee Jay, A-Charlie, and A-Karin.

I would've played with you, if I knew you had it set up. :( Although I can play pad, I'd play Capcom fighters on stick if I had a chance.
The only real Alpha appearance was everyone trying to hype up Hyper SFA, and since that didn't start around the time it was supposed to I was just like eh. I'm way more interested in high-level SFA3, since I missed it the first time around. Hopefully next year we'll see some play for it.

I think there's a decent chance that it'll be at next year's Evo. It seems that it's experiencing something of a resurgance since Alpha Anthology's release, and we now have an arcade perfect console release, so it would be a perfectly reasonal expectation for it to be in Evo. At least, that's what I hope.

I think that's the main reason the game died down a little. A lot of people were daunted by the prospect of having to learn V-ISM.

I play this game a bit here and there since I picked up Alpha Anthology. I'm one of those dudes who don't really wanna get into learning all aspects of V-ism. I've had trouble finding the perfect character for me, though, but I've been using A-sagat and A-chun mostly for a while...

alpha 2 is better than a3 for a couple reasons imo.
a3 is a very fun game on mid levels, but once you start playing people who are really good, the game degenerates quickly. when both characters start out with meter (which can kill you in 1 mistake with better characters) you have to play really really safe which isnt that fun imo.
two, i really dislike the juggle system, the way counter hits work is stupid too .
alpha counters are really weak, and have a huge penalty considering the power and versatility of v-ism, which isnt really capcoms fault because alpha counters were really strong in a2.
threee, v-ism shadows hitting is really stupid, because it allows even botched customs to end up doing huge damage sometimes when you factor in unblockables and gc customs.
a2 has its flaws also (valle cc) but to me, the game feels overall more solid, and more like traditional street fighter.
^ yep.
I'm gonna try to make it down to Evo this year, and if so, I'll be looking to play Alpha/old school the most. Make sure I can find you TS. :wgrin: I wanna get beasted on by Rose.

Yes. I play A3, and it's my second favourite SF, after 3S. I wish V-Ism was weaker to begin with, and that crouch-cancels never existed in the first place.. but for what it's worth, I still love the game.
I play A-Ken, Ryu, Charlie, Cody, Sagat and Birdie.
So what?

V-Cody if I ever go to EVO for whatever reason. Although, if I ever went, I'd probably be more concerned with 3S than anything.
I do agree with most of the criticism leveled towards high level A3 play, but I still find it strangely entertaining in some odd way. Slide refers to the game as a 'meter cold war' which I think is pretty accurate.
I do find though, that a lot of the people who prefer A2, feel that way simply because it's easier to pick up. I know that learning VC's regardless of infinites turned a lot of people away from A3. Especially since it's practically a requirement in doing well competitively. Landing a 3 hit combo in A2 for example, is much more rewarding than it is in A3, so I think there's more of a feeling of instant gratification with A2. Not saying the game isn't more intelligence based at higher levels, but this seems to be what draws most people to it.
It's interesting how A2 was received differently in Japan and the US though.
Here, it's considered the more well thought game of the alpha series, while in Japan it's generally considered crap. I think I read somewhere that Ohnuki won the first major A2 tournament, said the game was trash and then it just sort of died. Suppose it doesn't speak too well of a game when your top player thinks it's shit.
The same thing happened with A3 in the states though. A lot of the top players got sick of doing infinites or waiting to VC and it sort of died out here the way A2 did in Japan. Even some of the people who still play it seem very bitter about how VCs changed the game. Some of the people from Absolution2K4 in the UK for example.
I think I'm less bitter about it, because I picked it up knowing it is the way it is. So there was no real rude awakening for me. I wasn't there when shit suddenly shifted in a totally different direction.
One thing though. I heard that CC infinites were banned from EVO, but how the hell do you enforce that? What about pseudo infinites like Sodom's jump FP's (sans re-activation) or Karin's jump RH's (same thing)? Or people who can juggle a dozen or so times, but will eventually drop the guy like Rose or Rolento? What's the limit on follow-up attacks after the last couple repetitions of a VC? If infinites aren't being used, I'll usually use jump LK, jump FP, air-throw with Cody for example, but what would happen if I threw in another jump LK in there? Would I be disqualified or what? What happens if they flip during the CC set-up?
I think that's why the Japanese allowed them, because there are too many exceptions, and you'd have to have a list a mile long telling people what they can and can't do. Plus, it'd be way too easy to get in trouble for slipping up and adding an extra juggle or something.

I took it upon myself to shove Alpha 3 down the throats of everyone in the Greater Toronto Area and the game has seen a major resurgance over the last few months. Tournaments are starting to level around the 16 - 24 area, which is healthy for an SF game. With the exception of the crouch cancel issue, I've always been a big fan of this engine. Hopefully more areas pick this game back up and it sees widespread use again after being dormant for a few years.

Slide refers to the game as a 'meter cold war' which I think is pretty accurate.
I forgot who said that to me, but it wasnt originally from me. The term made total sense though, that's why i started calling it that too.
I'll play the game, but i still despise meter :wonder:
To me, it looks like the best characters in the game, are the characters that either
A. Force you to use the meter without having to use it themselves.
B. Can use it without any reprocussions.
C. Holds on to it as a bigger threat(even if you cant even use it right yourself. You can bluff).
I could break that down and be character specific, but whatever.

Your insight is appreciated

alpha 2, obviously, no questions asked.
she has access to actual damage in that game via her custom. her normals are sick, shes extremely fast, her jumpins are sick, shes just a really complete character, i dont even want to imagine someone like justin or ricky using her at a high level.

you just mentioned about a3 chun minus the part of her being complete.
but the main reason why shes better in a2 over a3 are because of 3 things:
-extremely good fireball.
-fast, invincible command overhead
-easy ass brain dead CC

I wouldn't mind playing A3 comp where I'm at.
Only thing though is all the arcades that are in the south bay area took every A3 cab there is and no one WANTS to play it on the alpha collection cab at all.
Which I do understand since the cab doesn't have GREAT joysticks at all period.
Back about 3 years ago NorCal had the a3 comp then everyone left and shit like that.=[

Chun' doesn't need damage in A3. She can just VC you and then go into her infinite. That plus all the priority she has, makes it difficult not to either blow your meter or get guard crushed at some point. V-Chun' is still near top tier in A3. Just below V-Sagat on most lists.
She is better in A2 though, simply because her VCs in A3 are a pain, and other characters got a lot stronger in A3.

yeah i forgot all about her overhead haha, that shit is broken too. and even her supers are good if you choose to use them, but you might as well just custom.
also in alpha games she has a reliable no meter reversal, up kicks.
