Anyone here have experience with RPG maker? I had the first one for ps1 a good while back, and seem to remember enjoying it. I'm just wondering if anyone here uses/used it?

Can you give me opinions on the series? I may have a lot of time on my hands due to surgery soon, so I was just wondering. I have an official HD in my PS2, so I can make use of that for the 2nd and 3rd versions, but is it worth it?

Ok, well since I LIKED the first one, I guess my question should be about whether the second or third ones were any better.

get the PC version RPG maker 2003, its a whole lot better and you can create your own art and import it. You can also find shit where people have ripped the sprites and tiles from other snes games and you can use those too.

try out this site and you see get stuff to use and play games people have made:

That seems cool, but I don't have a PC at home.

Edit: actually that seems really awesome.

Yeah i knew some artist friends who were using it to make a game last year, they would use paint to make the animation frames and the background tiles. they even found a cheap sound software to make music. It's pretty fuckin cool what some people have made, I remember playing "Final Fantasy: Endless Nova"(you can find it on that site I linked) and I was pretty impressed by what you can do with that shit.

part 2 is considered the best. 3 has better graphics but not as many options

Dude, IT's VERY awesome x8091823.

I played around with RM2K, and it was pretty flexible. I haven't tried any of the console RPG makers, but I imagine it takes longer to do since it doesn't have a mouse and keyboard. you can even make zelda type games with it.

If you want to see it's power, go download A Blurred Line, considered the best game made with RM2K.

As stated, you should use one of the PC versions. Between the three (RM2K, RM2K3, and RMXP), I like using RM2K3 the most because of the ATB DBS. But all three are good.

To straight up answer your question:

RPG Maker 1: Yeah the format here works, I enjoyed this one too. Pretty much the most common RPG making system you will find in an RM game.

RPG Maker 2: In terms of depth and what you can do for a console RM, this one has it hands down. The graphics are pretty crappy but the system is so complex, if you want to use it to its fullest, you actually need some programming knowledge. Probably has the highest learning curve of all RM's (both console and PC imo)

RPG Maker 3: Avoid this one at all costs unless you HAVE to have a battle system where you can see your characters fight (or you can play RM2 and fashion that type of system.) You can't modify characters at all, if you want a warrior, you have a choice of one model and several pallete swaps. From what I hear, you can screw with the game and swap models and classes (but it looks screwey.) If your rpg has to be 3D, then pick this one.

PC RMs (XP, 2003): Yeah, what everyone else said. Allows you to import pretty much anything you want. And i'm not totally sure, but I think in terms of what you can do with the system, its just as good as RM2. I would pick this one if your serious about making a game.

All in all, pick the console ones if your bored and feel like making an RPG sitting on your couch. If your serious, get the PC versions. If your serious but want to do the console thing, i'd say take the hit on graphics and go with RM2. I own all 3 and I kept them all simply because I like the change of pace each one provides.
