I've had the JP one for awhile now. Yes it is the best Tales right next to Tales of Rebirth

I hope the strat guide is as good as Disagea 2's or at least as good as TOS' guide.

American RPGs are great. KOTOR and Oblivion rule. Though, as you can tell by my name, I'm an RPG fan in general.

Sweet Tooth
09-02-2006, 07:03 PM
Those are really the only ones (excluding fable) that people talk about. So how can all americian RPGs be good if people only spout out the same 3 names each time?

But really it doesnt matter, a good game is a good game.

spudlyff8fan
09-02-2006, 07:07 PM
Really, are there any other big American RPGs OTHER than those ones? (was Skies of Arcadia made in America?)

Sweet Tooth
09-02-2006, 07:34 PM
Yes, lots of people loved that one. I don't think it was Americian made though.

Yeah, Sega actually divided everything up between Sega of Japan and Sega of America.

Anyway, we can't forget about Diablo. And Baldur's Gate.

By console, it goes

Tales of Phantasia
Tales of Destiny
Tales of Eternia (Destiny II PS1)
Tales of Destiny II (PS2)
Tales of Rebirth
Tales of Legendia
Tales of the Abyss

there are also Tales of on the handhelds too, and theres going to be Tales of the World for PSP (which looks great btw)

Sweet Tooth

Yeah, Sega actually divided everything up between Sega of Japan and Sega of America.

Skies of Arcadia was made in Japan by Overworks, which was one of Sega's development companies back then. The only thing Sega of America did was localize the game, i.e., voice overs and translation.

In any event, *marks down October 10 on his calendar*

which is better: tales of symphonia or tales of legendia ?

Tales of Symphonia. The combat in Legendia felt clunky, plus there are frequent random encounters when ToS had none.

Yes, TOS owns Legendia for free.

I'm a huge Tales fan, but Legendia was horrible.

I can't wait for TOtA to come out, and heres to hoping they dont change the intro song for the american version like they did Symphonia

They took out Legendia's completely! Eh, I don't care if they take out Abyss's tho, but if they did what they did to Legendia (rip out voice, leave background) then it'd hurt the song more than it did Legendia.

Tales of the Abyss is for men. Rogue Galaxy is for pansies.

Well people have a love/hate relationship w/ it. Not everyone will like it but some will. I personally liked it b/c of the characters. Besides Tales of Rebirth and Abyss, imo it has some of the most likeable characters and the character chapters near the end really enhance that. I dunno if you wanna chance it based on my word alone, so read some reviews and get some user opinions before buying it.

DropKick Murphy

Legendia got a 8.0 from gamespot, Abyss got a 7.9. One point really doesnt matter. Symphonia has the highest score out of both of them 8.8

I happened to have played all 3. I still liked Abyss the most. The way your characters battle, and run around and fight is a lot more free than Symphonia's system was. I also like the characters in Abyss moreso than Symphonias. The score means that the game is very good, so I don't understand how 7.9 is bad, or worse than the other one's. It's all subjective anyways. I think that Symphonia ranks the lowest out of the newest Tales with my order going

Tales of the Abyss
Tales of Rebirth
Tales of Legendia
Tales of Symphonia

I'm worring that when people see these scores that they won't buy the game now which means no more Tales games for the US.

yes american PC rpgs are great (oblivion kinda dumbed down but oh well).

there's a long legacy of d&d based pc rpgs (and some other non d&d based ones) that blow away japanese console rpgs. i posted about it in the unpopular gaming opinion thread.

in other words, baldurs gate, planescape, icewind dale, morrowind, fallout, ultima, and so on.

so i've been playing this the past 2 nights... and it's pretty good and all so far except i'm a little disappointed at the fact that this game actually runs on the "free roaming" battle system similar to symphonia (although there seems to be more options). o well, it has more to do with my own preference anyway. at least the character designs are back to fujishima kosuke.

another thing that's really disappointing is that there is no voice in the tales games' signature "chat" sequences. i'm pretty much convinced that they got too lazy to dub english over those parts, since those had voices all the way back to eternia (not sure about the first destiny, since i don't remember that game well). which kind of reminded me why i hate playing english translated rpg sometimes. i usually import rpg's.

so i've bitched a lot, but i'm also only 5 hours into this thing so we'll see how it goes.

EDIT: also, i personally didn't think legendia was bad. in a overall aspect, it felt more like a tales game than symphonia. symphonia was first big exposure the tales series had in the united states, so that's probably the main reason why most people think it's better. on the other hand, if you've played the older tales games symphonia feels somewhat out of place compared to the rest. i really liked the characters in symphonia, though.

EDIT 2: whenever i see the costumes in later tales games (except legendia) i think of battle robes from ah! my goddess... but maybe that's just me. the same can be said about the plug suits from sakura taisen, but i guess it figures since they were all designed by the same guy lol.

uh so... where am i supposed to find anise? i crossed the other bridge but couldn't find anything other than the locked gate and couple of search points.

so i've been just level grinding by fighting shitty monsters and did some side quests after returning to engeve.

How is Fable being considered an American RPG? It's British! And KOTOR IIRC might be Canadian!

Not sure if I'm too late with this (just started playing it late Friday night), but...

From St. Binah, search the area to the south until what looks like a group of rocks, which should be the valley near the Fubras River they mentioned earlier. Once you get through there, you should be able to make it to the checkpoint, where you'll find Anise.

uh, so i'm having trouble defeating arietta.

i know that i'm supposed to isolate her and take her down but the process isn't simple as it sounds. i've had some success having tear and jade sit in the back casting spells and anise dish some attacks when there were openings, while i tried to distract the other two monsters with luke as much as possible... but i still haven't really come close in defeating them i don't think. i've also tried everybody just try to whoop the shit out of arietta but that got my entire party killed off really fast.

everybody in my party is currently at level 15 or 14. i'm using luke/tear/jade/arietta but should i swap arietta with guy since he's much faster? i have 2 life bottles, 2 orange gels, and no apple gels remaining.

also... is there a way to prevent arietta from casting defense boost at the beginnign of the fight? i've tried attacking her as fast as possible several times to prevent it, but she seems to get the spell off no matter what.

any help would be appreciated.

crowd control. You put one monster to sleep, focus fire on the other add, and then focus fire on the slept add, then deal with Arietta. Debuff and Buff if necessary.
