You're speculating that if our society was dominated by women that there would be male prostitution. However, you seem to pass over something very important- why the bulk of civilization is mostly male-dominanted. The answer to this is simply sexual selection, or rather the control of it.

The reason why the male/female mating game is skewed is simply because it has to. In order for the best genes to be passed to the most viable offspring, the most physical appealing male has to sought after. Statistically it is impossible that every male in a population would be chosen for this simple fact.

In nature, and in more gender equal societies, women make the choice of who they want to mate with. No matter if it is a housefly or a capybara females make the choice, and that is the reason why sexual selection is so successful.

Now some time in human history, male humans, being outright more intelligent than all other male animals on the planet, made a decision (whether it was concious or subconcious is up for debate) in which women would not be at the helm of their mini-societies. Instead they will be seen as reproductive conquests which could be bartered off, the precursor of modern marriage. Since domains and resources were now just as essential as sex, sexual selection became more vague.

With the advent of agriculture, prostitution was created as a means of men, many of whom could not afford to support multiple wives to subconciously procreate with many women and do so without excessive travelling (because agriculture allowed men to stay in a city or town) and using money or goods for services.

Eventually this evolved into a male dominated society in which women were treated as second-class persons whose sole purpose is for reproduction and maintaining domestic homeostasis.

Fortunately, this changed over thousands of years with the birth of modern civilization, (at least in some areas) and sexual selection is becoming less cloudy because of that fact. I would gladly agree if it wasn't for this wonderful hormone known as testosterone. Unlike women who need more chemical and mental stimuli needed for arousal, (due to having significantly less testosterone levels than males) men have a larger amount of testosterone and work more on a visual basis (sans pheromones) and have to be more ready to mate at anytime because women are not fertile at everytime.

To say that women want sex as much as men is to completely ignore the biological reasons of why we all want sex in the first place, hormones. That isn't to say some women can't make a concious decision to have sex all the time (birth control/ sexual selection makes it much easier) but that the basis for them wanting sex is more for gratification/liberation than for subconcious reproduction.

I don't actually think it's a double standard either way, but I'm glad you point it out because most people don't want to accept that it's not a double standard. For something to be a double standard, both actions have to be the exact same thing. For women, they basically hide in their castle, pull up the drawbridge, and turtle. But even with that, exactly who is applying this? Women like to claim that men call women that sleep around sluts, however, how many times have you actually heard men get behind that notion? The stupid people that buy into this being a double standard have conveniently decided to hash over this, and have made it a case of "the approval from the opposite sex of one's sexual promiscuity" vs. "the approval from the same sex of one's sexual promiscuity." The argument is men do not approve of female promiscuity, but men do approve of male promiscuity. That is the fallacy. It's supposed to be male approval of female promiscuity vs. female approval of male promiscuity. The next question is again separate, and you can figure it out yourself. The problem is instead of a comparison of the same point, thus creating the "double standard", we have a hybrid mix of two separate statements and then a claim that they are the same "standard". You can see for yourself why this isn't the case.
