Yeah I love the "video game" theme the director put in this movie.
The "final fight" type scene with the street thugs in motorcycles, the fighting game type scene with the capoeira guy and the Kung-fu Master/Spartan X type scene when he was going up level by level through the stairs decimating random thugs along the way.
Also LOL at the scene where he passes a Jackie Chan look-alike at the airport, as a symbollic passing of the torch scene as the Jackie Chan look-alike is heading to the departure area as Jaa just arrived Australia.
And nice touch with the use of elephant bones to kill the big guys, because him taking out those HUGE guys hand-to-hand would be definitely bullshit (especially after the knife wound). Definitely adds credibility points to the martial arts aspect of the creative team involved.
The Thai cop is annoying as hell though. I'd rather see Jar Jar Binks than that guy. I wanna watch this new American release, maybe they dubbed that guy's voice now and that would make it so much better.

What's so bad with dubbed?
According to you guys the plot sucked anyway. What are you gonna miss in the script if its dubbed? If anything, it would be better because there'd be more room for the action on the screen.
Or is it more of just a preference thing and that when the mouths don't align with the language it irks you?

I've already seen (and own) this movie on DVD, and the bone-breaking scene is definitely top tier.
The fight up the stairs is great, too...that scene is covered in one of the DVD extras. Tony was pretty much out of breath after that scene.

It less authentic when it's dubbed. Also it kind of ruins what the directors/casters image was when you totally change their voices.

no one has really mentioned one really significant scene in this movie. the scene where he goes up all the flights of stairs beating fools up. it was mentioned but no one mentioned what made it special. if you notice, that whole 3-5 minute fight was totally unedited, done in one take. the camera never stopped, stayed on track with him the whole time, no camera angle changing, it just follows him til he gets to the restaurant. no one ever seems to notice this about the scene. you can tell he was hella tired at the end. and you can tell some of the ways he beat people werent perfect, he, or the stunt men would not do it perfect, which lent to a lot more authenticity to me. ive never scene anyone do one continuous take like that, exerting that much energy and wild stunts. amazing

I know I'm late but....
....last night we decided to watch "The Protector" (which we saw on premier in the theatre) and Tom Yum Goong (uncut Thai version we've had since Thai release) back to back at home. Why must they edit the original film and dum it down for US audiences? The english overdubs are trash also...WHY?!? I mean, they cut out a lot of footage, most of which isn't action but beautiful shots of Thailand and other background stuff. They also cut some action and comedy. Do they think that we wouldn't appreciate it? They cut out a lot of "Dirty Ball's" scenes too. Hell, Tony Ja's Dad is assumed dead in the US release but the Thai version, they show him recovering? WTF? Its not like its going to stop any hardcore Ja fans from going to the theatre if they leave it in. If anything its more authentic which is why we like this kid in the first place. The edits on the US release are choppy and awkward anyways....production wise.....I just don't get it.
Are the edits because of Quentin Tarantino's involvement?
Finished rant. Tom Yum Goong FTW.

Jackie Chan did something as crazy as this in one of his old movies, but I forgot which one.
The whole fight scene was between him and another guy for five minutes straight with no camera angle changes or any of that shit. Jackie Chan did that scene because he had a lot of detractors and haters back then and wanted to prove them wrong.
I believe it took him four months just for that scene alone.

Heh...yeeeeeah. It didn't look as good, but we all were wearing kung fu suits so it was worth it. Yes, my buddy did infact pick out kung fu suits for his wedding theme, no joke.
Boo to the Protecter edits. I wanted to see the Segway chase scene. And they hella fucked up the scene with the mud-bath killer by editing out his previous parts in the movie.

That 5 minute scene fight was one of the illest things I've ever seen!!!! The dedication, so many things to remember, so many things that had to go right, and it STILL managed to look convincing!!!:wow:
And the Lateef scene made the movie, the other elephant tendon-destoryer and million man bone-slaughter was owneriffic!!!:bgrin:

My friend let me watch the original Tom Yung Goong [IIRC, the title is simply the name of the restuarant] a long while back, and yeah it was pretty good. It's basically the same story as Ong Bak, but the fight scenes kept it fresh [or at least made you forget about the plot entirely]. Nathan Jones is badass, the tackle he hits Jaa with at the temple was sick. Oh, and in the subbed one I watched, the Elephants that get kidnapped were called like Bo [Bobo or something rofl] and Khan. Yeah. Good movie to watch.

I saw this movie last year. Great movie Tony Jaa is amazing. I even met him in person. Very kool guy. When I met him I got to see the US version of it before it hit the theaters. Yes there was a lot of parts that were cut off. If I were you guys see Tom Yum Goong and you'll know. I love that part where he was fighting that Capoeria guy and the guy with the sword. Plus where he was fighting those guys in the building breaking their bones. Next movies Tony Jaa is working on is Ong Bak 2, Sword, and Hanuman. Be on the look out for those.

LOL I ask Tony how long it took them to do that scene. He said it took them 6 trys to get it right. He had to get rid of one cameraman because he was not catching up to him. On the 5th try right where they almost got to the end the camera ran out of film. That was a good scene though.

.....my question is this: is it better than the new Jet-Li movie?
If you're referring to Fearless? They are 2 totally different movies. Fearless seems a lot more serious and the action was more technique/precision martial arts showcase. The movie is also set in a traditional Chinese past history. Jet Li's opponents as a whole are more skilled than pure evil. Tom Yum Goong was more comic book style violence and extreme martial arts. Bad guys are bad guys, there is no question as to who is what when he's facing his oponents. Its also set in modern timeline. Its flashy too. Aside from a few skilled opponents its more of a kicking ass type of movie I guess. Both are awesome movies in their own right.
....Fearless is better if I had to choose, but its an unfair choice/comparison.

Not if you were one of the stuntmen who got to get Tony Jaa (when he was sad about his elephant's death) You could say "Yeah! I kicked Tony Jaa in the face!"
I saw this as Tom Yum Goong (from my friend) but it didn't have the ending on it. It cut off just as the 4 big dudes were pushing the baby elephant out of the way! Then when it finally came to theaters, my local theater wasn't showing it! But today I was at the Barber shop waiting for my friend, and BAM they had the whole movie going! Lucky me.

extreme limb-breakingly awesome movie
only seen original thai version though
hoping to see the US theater release soon, probably same night as Fearless (this friday) too bad i now know some of the edits they've done
namely the one i don't like the most is the fact that they don't show his dad recovering later, they just kill him off... too sad
that staircase scene was a good highlight of the film in terms of film making (one-long-shot)
MY favorite scene of the film has to be the burning temple scene as a whole, awesome fights between specilized warriors and the cops win in the end
Fearless>Protector>>>Crank
and as far as SUB vs DUB goes
people need to release that DUB does NOT automatically mean that it's a bad dub, technically every movie should be 99% as enjoyable when it's dubbed into another language, voices are NOT supposed to be changed completely and no changes in the director's image of the movie should be compromised
If a crappy dub comes out, that's just what it is, a crappy dub, but that doesn't mean the movie couldn't have been dubbed better if done by someone else
so by nature, SUBs are better than DUBs because original voices are always credible when they're original actors that original casters chose to fit the character[/rant]

WTF movie were you watching?
The camera work is not Raimi style innovative, but its pretty awesome. Watch the scene with Jaa fighting those street punks and sliding in the slight opening of the barbed wire and the camera zooms out, goes underneath and turns 45° to follow the focus on Jaa... and it wasn't a camera programmed on a track!
The action wouldn't be this good without the director's eye for shooting a good fight scene. Just watch this other movie he produced but didn't direct: Born to Fight aka Kerd Ma Liu (I dunno if that's the accurate Thai title), and see the huge difference.
