It is sad news. He has a family that outlived him. Not saying I am surprised though. Guy was a fucking loon.

Stingray?!

Manx
09-03-2006, 09:50 PM
Not very surprising considering his occupation, but I would have thought it'd be a crocodile or an aligator or a rabid monkey or something that got him instead of a sting ray. There goes my misconception about those things being relativly harmless.

This is a tragedy and a shocking death. Stingrays are usually docile creatures and I'm sure that he wasn't trying to take any special risk filming around them. This really sucks, I used to think he was a loon too but overtime I really understood why he did what he did and respected him for it.

I was hoping this was a joke or a fake article, but sadly it is true. Poor guy... he was absolutely a blast to watch on TV, and he had a real passion for life, nature, and all living things. RIP, Steven Irwin.

It's sad, but we all have to go some time.

I bet if there is an after life, Steve Irwin's ghost must think that this was a pretty awesome way to go.

If he had been killed by a crocodile, his ghost would have thought "Blimey... got buggered by a croc like everyone figured I would. And now me crocs have an even worse reputation. Life's dream.... falied".

But now in death, he continues to defy convention, makes sting rays known as the lethal killers they are, and crocodiles are still beloved by all.

Godspeed, Steve Irwin. You kicked ass.

His death just seems so fishy to me (no pun intended). He's been able to parry nature's animal wrath for so long but to die from something like a stingray is just so incredibly random. If there is, I'd like to see the video of his death.

I'm sure that he'll r.i.p. with all the pro-nature brownie points he's amassed in his lifetime. I hope his children keep his legacy alive even if they don't follow in his footsteps exactly.

He's not dead. He knew some crazy animal trick where he switched bodies with the Stingray.

And if it didn't work, then he will be reborn by a croc giving birth to a human baby. None of that egg shit, he's gonna come busting out of it using his teeth, then his first words at 3 minutes old will be

I liked that guy, out of all the animals a stingray though. Condolences to family and friends. People should visit and support the zoo he worked at in aus. That's because the odds of being killed or attacked by a stingray is extremely rare, which makes it even more confusing. Like sharks, stingrays are extremely sensitive to electronic equipment so maybe that set it off.

And to think, I touched one of those bastards at Seaworld!

Not very surprising HOW he died, either. I knew, I just KNEW he'd piss SOMETHING off and it would take him out. I know how dangerous Sting Rays are, it's just so damn unexpect regardlessly. I knew he would get killed by an animal, but i was damn shocked that it was a sting ray. I mean, a school of Jelly Fish swarming the screen like Striders legion attack, sure, or a huge shark coming in and just swallowing him. But a sting ray is just a bit suprising since there weren't any rescent fatalities caused by them.

I mean, This guy was more Invincible than Bruis Lee, and any of Famous Boxer/MMA fighter. It was a passion for him to piss of Man Killing/Eating animals. ANIMALS YOU SEE IN A "TOP 10 MOST DANGEROUS" SHOW, that shit was like video games for him. He would get right up a Kobras face and dodge every single fast strike - even snakes/animals that spit out venom, he would dodge that shit; The man had like 0 frames and no Lag/recovery. i also remember him unwrapping a huge ass python off his neck, and head locking Crocs that looked like they would rip off half your body with just a munch. But a fish, an animal that not even Animal Planet gave shit about?

To you guys that are suprised by him being killed by a stingray, those things are fuckin deadly, not to mention he was underwater, so the stingray had a huge advantage in the mobility department. And look at the pic that was posted, the thing has a fuckin barbed sword for a tail. Theres a lot of dangerous shit like that out there that youd think was really docile....

But they are docile. Thousands of scuba divers are in the water at various resorts and beaches all over the world and are looking at and/or touching stingrays right now. Those fish are very docile and would most likely run away than attack. And you can feed them.

I was just thinking the other day about that movie "The Rock" when Nicholas Cage had to stab himself in the heart with a big ass needle to stop his heart so the poison couldn't course through his system.

I was thinking I would probably end up dead because I wouldn't have the balls to plunge a painful needle into my beating heart. Steve took a STINGRAY BARB into his heart and got poison instead of cure.

Sooner or later, something like this was gonna happen when you live on the most dangerous continent and mess around with the deadliest animals.

I've seen divers practically manhandle rays and they don't seem to give a fuck.
It makes me wonder what the hell the Croc Hunter was doing to the stingray to piss it off enough to freaking impale him. Maybe he touched it in it's "special private place?"

Poor guy... I always loved imitating that wacky Aussie. He was 44?? Wow... dude looked better and had more energy than a lot of twenty five year olds I know.

Does this mean the stingray is making a run to usurp the grizzly from the top of the teir list? Only time will tell.

http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/TV/09/04/australia.irwin/index.html

Irwin was in the area to film pieces for a show called "The Ocean's Deadliest" with Philippe Cousteau, grandson of Jacques, according to Irwin's manager and friend John Stainton. But weather had prevented the crew from doing work for that program, Stainton said, so Irwin decided to do some softer features for a new children's TV show he was doing with his daughter, Bindi.

"He came over the top of a stingray that was buried in the sand, and the barb came up and hit him in the chest," Stainton said.

Wildlife documentary maker Ben Cropp, citing a colleague who saw footage of the attack, told Time.com that Irwin had accidentally boxed the animal in. "It stopped and twisted and threw up its tail with the spike, and it caught him in the chest," said Cropp. "It's a defensive thing. It's like being stabbed with a dirty dagger."

Man... that's really sad that he had to go out like that. Not only was he working with a legend's grandson for a documentary, he was killed while trying to get footage for a children's show he was doing with his daughter. I don't believe in karma any more... not after such a good person like him had to die like this.

For some unknown reason, hearing this news just breaks my heart. I'm just devastated and once again I pose the question of “why do all the good people have to die so young?” The man truly showed his dedication and love for wildlife conservation far beyond the Jack Hanna's and Jeff Corwin's of the world.

His style was so unique and captivating. I could recall countless times I would be bored as hell channel surfing at home and as I soon as I flicked by Animal Planet I would always stop and see Steve go 1on1 with some random 15ft croc or some ridiculously huge spitting cobra. I literally would fall asleep watching 'Croc Hunter' re-runs throughout the night.

Stingrays aren't as powerful as people make them to be (though still dangerous). If that barb had hit somewhere like the arm, leg, side, ect, Steve more than likely would have lived. The venom coating on the tail is what killed him when it pierced his heart. It just happened to hit the one spot.

Death by Stingrays are extremely rare. Most they usually do is cause nausea and pain.

The new story now is that the stingray that killed him was buried under the sand, so they may have misjudged the location of the tail if it was hidden.

Lvl.3

Actually the posion in the tail is what killed him. I guess he was trying to ride the String Ray and his chest was in the striking spot.

To the people who think that this is surprising...

The ocean has some of the deadliest life in the planet. Not only because of 'venomous' creatures but because as a human you're in an environment where you can't maneuver nearly as well as a creature who has lived in that medium for its entire life.

You get stung by a sting ray, a boxcar jellyfish, or some forms of octopus, and your ass is grass.

It's also important to note that there is not a single sting worse than the sting of a stonefish or a stingray. Those things pierce through fucking boots.

TrueSephiroth
09-05-2006, 02:06 AM
I believe Irwin was struck by the largest species of Stingray, the ones that can grow up to 10-14 ft and weighing up to 700+lbs I believe. However the chances of being struck in the heart is extremely low, if he was struck by his limbs or something, he would've survived almost definetly, however a struck in the heart is very fatal, I believe there has only been one document of a person surviving being struck in the heart by a stingray.

Still I believe only 15 or 17 casualties worldwide by a stingray, this is very, very low, considering the amount of people who reside near the ocean shores or frequent them. As I've stated earlier, I will truly miss Steve Irwin, it wasn't always his over the top craziness that made me like him, it was the mere fact that everything he was doing, he expressed himself honestly, which is what I loved about him, he was being himself everytime, all the time, much respect to him, give a thumbs up to Mr. Rogers(Another guy who I loved) for me while your up there Steve.

one of his closest friends who watched the video said after he was stabbed, he pulled the barb out but died almost immediately because of extensive bleeding. the rigid edges of a sting ray's barb is meant to shred and tear when trying to pull it out. that probably added to the bleeding.

Not to be an insensitive prick, but he once fed a crocodile while holding his infant son or daughter.

And that's a reason for him to die? I don't see your reasoning for even posting that. Irwin was an expert in his field and knew what he was doing. While it wasn't the wisest thing for him to do in public, he has 100% control of the situations he's in. He knows croc behavior like the back of his hand; being with them, and other wild animals, is a second nature to him. Of all the injuries he's received from animals, none were serious or life threating if I recall correctly. It was just an unfortunate, random case of bad luck that he was killed like this.

Does anyone know how these stingrays actually attack?

To my knowledge, they simply lash the base of their tail at you and stab you with it. Poor guy... he was probably dead either way. If he left it in his heart, the amount of venom going into his blood stream would probably kill him. If he ripped it out, he was going to die of blood loss. Poor Steve. :shake:

Imagine being on Fear Factor and having your opponents be Steve Irwin and Austin Stevens. I would totally just walk off the fucking set.

Anyway, even though it's been a few days, this news is still quite sad.

A FUCKING STINGRAY!?!?!? WTF!?!?! I've played with those things plenty of times not knowing that they had the potential to kill you. I thought that the most they could do was run your over. I expected him to get killed man style. You know, like getting eaten by tigers under molten lava with ninja snipers shooting laser guns at him while he was handcuffed. This is up there with a dolphin biting someones head of, you just can't believe it.

I heard that in Rand McNally, they wear hats on their feet and hamburgers eat people.

R.I.P. Steve. you were one of the only reasons I bothered watching regular TV.

when I heard it had happened, I had hoped that it was only a joke or a typo, but it was true. yeah, I knew it was only a matter of time before one of those animals snapped and went berserk on him, but yuou always have that hope that things don't go bad. still, at least he went out doing what he loved to do. no bad shit left behind for the gossip mongers to pick at. that's a plus in any book. he'll be remembered for a lot of good as well as the fact that he lived a life that most of us wouldn't have the balls to go for. my hat's off to ya Steve. Rush heaven down with the quickness.

So what was O'reily saying exactly?

On a related note, Glenn Beck hates the way people are saying "It's the way he would've wanted to die".

oreily is basically saying he was stupid and deserved to die for doing this type of stuff for his job and he was lucky he lived that long.

I think getting killed by a smaller one is even less likely to happen to you than what happened to Steve, but the one he was swimming over was the largest stingray species; it can grow somewhere around 7 feet wide wing to wing. Getting stabbed in the heart by one of those thing's barbs was pretty much game over. :(

Even now, after a few days, I'm still saddened with his death. I'm still in disbelief that it even happened. :shake:

What makes this guy a hero?
I dont think I've ever seen his show, why the hell is this front page news? What exactly has he contributed to humanity?

I think he's a bit of a bastard for leaving his family like that, I mean, if his family was his biggest priority, he wouldnt be putting his life on the line like that.

Also, sting ray? He's the damn crocodile hunter, he definately should have been shot by a crocodile. That's the way to go. I just hope his some avenges his death by making a show called "nature murderer" where he goes around beating up animals.

I remember an episode where he was in some desert at the top of a mountain, and there was a 6 foot wide crevasse he had to step over to get to some place where blue and black lizards lived. He made it across just fine, but his wife Terri got stuck straddling the 20 foot drop. Steve was all "I'll run ahead Ter. You can catch up later." Didn't even try to help her. Meanwhile, she struggles for like 8 minutes to cross the damn crevasse and staggers over to where Steve is super-focused on ordinary-looking lizards (they look like regular skinks with a blue line from head to tail). I really hope he became more considerate after that incident.

If you never even saw his show, you don't even deserve to post on this thread. Stop being an attention whore.
