View Full Version : anyway to avoid gamer's thumb?

I was over at a friends house playing T5, i play steve fox so it requires pressing square and triangle really fast. My technique is to just rub my thumb really quick and it lets out a the 1 2, 1 2, 1 2 2 combo nicely.

Well after like 10 rounds of playing my thumb just starts throbboing and it looks like i split a small piece of skin on the left corner of the nail. It's a little swollen but it usually goes down in a few days:rofl: , btw we were playing on pad.

Will playing stick help?(I don't play stick often).

1) play stick

or

2) hold the pad horizontally and use first and middle fingers to press the face buttons. i actually thought that's how most pad players play tekken. i mean, is it even possible to do 1+4 or 2+3 consistently on pad otherwise?

granted, i don't play much tekken but those 2 options would universally help for any game.

"i mean, is it even possible to do 1+4 or 2+3 consistently on pad otherwise?"

Certainly not consistantly, and the only way to get around it on the DualShock is by clever programming (i.e. programming select combinations to the triggers.) Thankfully you're given that option, but, even though I use it, it isn't very 'authentic.'

You should get yourself a stick, and learn to play with that and nothing else. Much like proper typing technique, it is something that will take some time to learn to get comfortable with. Once you become comfortable using a stick, you will never go back.

Get a stick. And when I'm stuck without my stick I play with two finger tips on the pad buttons. Or you can just develop what we refer to as a "gamer's Callus." Shame on you for not having one already in the first place. By now, I can dip my thumb in acid and not have to pull it out for about a minute thanks to good ole non-stop gaming marathons.

Haha I remember playing RF2 on a stick and I would catch cramps in my hand

I would take a break in betwwen plays and wash your hands, might do the work.

I don't know if you're doing this already, but do have you tried using the joint of your thumb to slide across the buttons? Not only do you have more control, but your thumb meets less resistence that way.

When I was a younger man back in the SF2 on SNES days I used to throw a tea-towel over the gamepad and play that way. 8 hours straight and no blisters.

Then a year later SNES sticks started appearing, and I never looked back. :)

Man sticks are damn expensive, I play mostly marvel/T5/ some 3S so I'm trying to track down a decent stick for DC. It looks like I'm going to have to spend at least 100 for a stick, damn.

I see the Sega DC stick on ebay all the time? anybody played one of those like a product review maybe??

Cheers

Put a band-aid on your thumb, making sure the cushiony part is right where the thumb connects to the button(obviously). Suprised noone else suggested this.

As for me? I've NEVER had gamers thumb.

There is this thing called masochism....it works for me.

btw... does using the character's last name make you a newb or do all tekken people do that?

I had that, sort of, it was on my left thumb though (stupid QCF, i should really get a stick.) but the skin came off right in the middle. I just stuck it out and let it heal and i never had it again....it was like the skin on my thumb was stronger or something.....

Yeah, i'll shut up now.

ya most good tekken player dont refer to the full name of the character so its safe to say he is a noob :wgrin: and ive seen very good pad players who only use their thumb and use characters like devil jin and do 1+4 everytime, its really weird.

It has the clicky feel to it, which turns some people off, but I've had mine ever since the DC came out and it's still a solid piece of hardware.

You could also get a ps2/dc converter. Totall Control works real well and its about 20 bucks. Then you wouldnt have to limit yourself to DC sticks and just use the converter. Helps with playing marvel and t5 since your prob using ps2 AND dc.

I tried that once. I don't recommend it. I played video games for 8 hours on that band aid and what ended up happening was the bandaid exterior taking all the wear and tear and leaving this sticky bandaid glue all over the pad.

My advice is to calm down. There are very few moves in Tekken that require such speedy input without precise timing. 1,2, 1,2, 1,2,2 is not a combo and I'll have to check but I'm 98% sure that 1,2,2 doesn't exist as a Steve string.

I used to get friction warts on my thumbs back when I first played Killer Instinct. I was a kid and just knew that long combos happened when I pressed a lot of buttons after doing a special. Now that I'm more experienced with fighters I don't get those warts(though I suck at comboing in Killer Instinct now:sweat: ).

Back in the snes street fighter 2 days i got "gamers thumb" from my left thumb rubbing on the dpad, after a few years this became less and less frequent ...playstation 1 generation diddnt happen at all.

then in the dreamcast generation i got a stick and have been playing sticks only since. a few times recently i tried using a pad...my thumbs are back to square one and are totally pussy.....a hour session has my thumb hurting like nuts

so even if your king of the iron thumb. after a few years of stick use you get all tender and normal again...fuck...upside to that is...who cares...you got a stick :)

I don't get gamers thumb with my righ thumb, but lately I've been trying to play MvC2 with a pad, and currently I have a stark white callus on my left thumb about the size of a nickel.

<--- ordered his stick parts yestarday

But yeah, I also agree that playing with fingers on the buttons instead of thumb is preferable. I've never understood how people use their thumb. For SF3 I have to use my thumb with fingers on L1 and L2... I still can't understand how people do it.

my left thumb is fucked from years of playing on pads since NES, i don't think there is any way to help besides not use it. it can only get worse. i have a callus on my thumb that is probably going to be there for life.

How the hell does a PS2 pad tear apart your thumb? I didnt know that was possible cause its all smooth.

Play on a dreamcast pad (Dpad) now that shit rips up your thumb. Such pointy edges that shit hurts after awhile:sad: I never had problems cept the old NES controllers how the had pointy corners even then my thumb was okay it was more my pointer fingers that hurt from that controller. Wasnt till DC came out that my left thumb experienced pain.

Well, I have problems with the Dualshock 2, at least I used to. Nothing as severe as 'tearing up your thumb,' but just some discomfort in my hand after picking up and playing a control cross heavy PS2 game after not using the controller for a while. However, now that I put a PSP extra cross button (from this set: http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-bh-49-en-70-1gii-4-6.html) on the PS2 cross, I don't have ANY problem whatsoever so perhaps thats what you should look into doing?

As for this gamer's thumb thing, I think I had something similar once. I played the Super Nintendo F-ZERO for two, or maybe even three, days... damn near ALL the time... doing some heavy time trialing. Afterwards I couldn't feel my hand! Of course since I was playing the game for two days straight I think that was the least of my problems, heh ;)
