None of this is concrete as of now, but I just wanted to throw out the idea of trying to hold a Midwest console only tournament in the near future. The goal of this is to try and attract the attention of the Chicago, St. Louis, Indiana, Kentucky, etc to try and get something going.
I am with some fellow players at UIUC (Champaign Urbana, IL), and feel as if somewhere in Central, IL would be a good buffer zone for all the different areas to commute to. Locations could either be Champaign/Urbana, Bloomington/Normal, or possibly even somewhere like Peoria.
I feel as if us Midwesterner's need to try and all get together to see who is really the best of the best. To many times now at like major nickles tournaments have players not shown up and or the amount of people been small. Lets try and change that.
Im just aiming for comments and reactions as of now. If there is a lot of positive feedback for this, i believe we should try and really push for something like this to happen.
Thanks

Set the time and the place, Ill come to clean up =). J/k but Id like to play in a midwest wide tourney and claim my spot as best of the midwest. Tis a great idea, make it so numba 1.

Nickel City is where it's at for Midwest tourneys. The fact that most of the games aren't played on console shouldn't be an excuse not to go to them.
As far as tops in Midwest goes, it's all about Juicy, Floe and Cue.

We already have two Chicago tourneys a year right, but OK. I guess see how much support you can get -- a tourney between Evo and NEC would be nice. I don't think it's really a secret by now who the big players of the region are though, results will prob be mostly the same as MWC :)

Krush and Ghaleon, I know exactly what you mean. It just it seems the past few Nickles tournaments have been very underwhelming. Most of all is how many people complain about shitty controls. Also its true as to who we know the top players already are.
Derek and Grego, im glad you guys support something like this. I just wanna see something like this happen someday.

Its not like we're saying chicago is a bad city (which it isnt at all GO BEARS) its just the real shitty turnout we have had recently. I feel Bloomington/Normal, IL would be great just because its insanely simple to get to. I have lived there for a looong time and its real easy to get around and has shit loads of food/hotels. Lets face it guys, although Nickles is one of the last great arcades around here, its going the way of the shitter.
Im just a small fish in a big pond here, and im gonna need some support if we wanna do this in the future. Spread the word people.
Also im wondering, how many of you think Central, IL would be a good location and or thinks the drive is too long, far, etc. Lemme know. Basically what i mean is would you come if we were to get this ball rolling?
Let's do this shit.
(And central IL is fine with me.)

Yeah.....lets do this. I was kinda thinkin about having a tournament console only at The Mizzou University sometime soon, but if you guys get this going, it may not be necessary. I've always been all about tournaments and keepin this fighting game shit alive.
I try to go to tournys whenever I can, and I've tried to hold em, but sometimes, I feel like there just isn't much interest.....
Big props to Humbag for KEEPIN THE SCENE ALIVE!!!

VDO and Omaha dosnt get mentioned as tops?
whatever
Keep in mind that Thanksgiving break is coming up in about one month. That's ideal time for a tourney. My break is November 16th - 26th, and I'd assume it's something like that for most colleges.
I would love to meet up with all my MidWest homies sometime over that break, preferably for a tournament. I can help run stuff too, but first we gotta see who's free when.
Weekend of November 18th/19th would work for me, so what's good?

Great idea..........I'd try to go if it happens.
I know 3s and GGXX/ are pretty much given, but what other games did you all have in mind?
humbag
10-15-2006, 04:11 AM
Well probably the games of choice would be 3s, t5, and gg/ of course.
Others could possibly be like CvS2, SC3, Meltyblood, or some SNK game if there is enough people.
More than likely we would shoot for those 3 main games and maybe one more. I did not mention MvC2 simply due to the lack of Dreamcasts. If people wanna play it you would have to bring it.
Now here is the thing, as well as i would love to have this during Thanksgiving/early November, i just dont think it can happen that early (who knows though). Its just that if we wanna do something like this ill need quite a bit of planning time.
Now, one of the places ive been thinking about is a place in Bloomington, IL called the Interstate Center. Its a huge place and ive been there many a time and im sure they would allow something like this to happen. There are many different sized rooms and are differnet prices for the day. Now they arnt cheap (go figure) so due to that this would be a one day thing.
As soon as i go back to my hometown (Bloomington/Normal) this next weekend im gonna be doing some research on the Interstate Center.
Thanks for the support so far. As a youngin just steppin into the scene only a couple years ago, ill do my best to keep our midwest scene alive.

my vote goes for the bloomington area around IU. i've driven up for previous tournaments that ghettoontherise has thrown and i don't mind the drive at all. plus i remember chicago guys and NKI (and STL guys) driving there, so it seems like a good central location. plus i could drag along some KY guys with me.
we're actually going to be throwing a tournament in lexington, KY around nov 11 or nov 18th once we secure a location. i wasn't expecting chicago guys to come to my tournament since that's quite a hike, but i was hoping indiana and MI people would for sure.
if you want to make this REALLY big, i'd suggest holding off until january so you can hype it up and really get the word out. december wouldn't really work due to NEC, finals, and the holidays, but that's just me.
and you've gotta have cvs2!
peace

AURORAAAA!
Damn, we never get any attention.
Not that it seems likely but have you tried looking for some sponsors. you probably won't get any help from anyone too major but you could try a local GameStop or GameCrazy. GameStop supported a tournament I held at my highschool once. Of course this only happened because my journalism student teacher worked at a GameStop and was also gamer (we also gave them plenty of adds in the school newspaper). We ended up handing gift cards to the winners (since cash prizes seem to be an issue at school). We also gave out laniards, stickers, etc. to everyone who showed.

OmegaX, we have had some tournaments at our local EB here in Champaign (where im going to school) so i will probably look into support from the EB in Bloominton/Normal as well and other places.

What is it with Midwest and Marvel? The two seem to clash for some reason. Everyone else (East coast, West Coast, South West) plays that shit fanatically except us. I cry.
If there isn't any marvel then count me out. Not making any kind of ultimatum (hell, I ain't nobody) and not that I don't enjoy other fighting games, but marvel is my main cake, and if there's gonna be a low turn-out for it, I'm not going to waste mine, or anyone elses time.

I support this. Nov 18 would be a great date IMO.(WARNING:a semi rant coming) the problem with this is the problem that has always plauged the midwest. We lead the country in posers. meaning ppl who will say/post that they'll come to these things then never show up(this problem doesn't exist in GG...and somehow the MW is the strongest in the country...coinidence??).Btw there's hella tournies in the midwest(tho mostly gg centered...once again coincidence that MW is strongest in this game?)
this weekend: O squared(GG and 3s based tourney)
Nov 5: Uic monthly(3s,mvc2 and GG based)
Dec: The last tourney of 2k6(a guilty gear based tourney at nickel city)
Jan: another MON tourney??(columbia mo. A gg and 3s and St based tourney)
Feb: Finally last but not least mwc5...coming soon at that ass.

Eating Contest.......
not kidding.
Dude, after you do this tournament (don't get everyone excited and then not do it), tell me all the details about how you ran it and how you got the place and the prices and stuff for everything. And any problems, cause I wanna have a big tournament sometime too.

Jan: another MON tourney??(columbia mo. A gg and 3s and St based tourney)
Yeah dude, we're gonna do that again. Probably will be at the college, not the arcade. I want to get as many people as possible, and rent a bunch of TV's.
Not tryin to advertise for Columbia's tournament in this dude's thread, but I couldn't help it.
Yo, I agree with Derek. We gotta have Marvel vs. Snapcom 2. That game is CRAZY CRACK...
(ST is nice too.)

It would probably be best to hold such a tournament at UIUC, considering...
A) There's a significant GG scene here
2) Possiblity of limited housing?
Delta) College town = tons of bars and food, etc
Pi) We're more or less in the center of all the big Midwest cities.

Yeah I know, i was just throwing out the Bloomington idea Scott.
But anywhoooo, i would love having mvc2, only thing is, i know i have one dc and a copy of it. I dont know anyone else (personally) who has it. Its just that GG is the strongest scene in the midwest as well as the likes of 3s and t5. It just goes down the line from there. Oh and I would definately run SF2, probably the aniversary edition of course.
Back to the UIUC idea, i would love to have it here as well. We just gotta find a big enough location thats not too expensive.

You should figure out a date soon, the earlier you decide a date, the more people will show up......I've learned that from a past tournament I had.

hey guys,
i am running a guilty gear tourney in champaign il on nov4. initially i was going to invite uiuc, chicago, and st. louis to this tourney since they are all relatively close. of course, it is open to the whole midwest and whoever would like to come. this tourney can be as big as people want it. the venue we have is very nice, relatively cheap and has hosted an 80 person tourney in the past. ill post an official thread in the tourney section later today.
champain does have plenty of housing, motels, hotels, and bars. and you have to be (only) 19 to get into the bars.
edit: i just finished the thread.. here it is (http://www.shoryuken.com/forums/showthread.php?p=3401398#post3401398).

Is this tournament still going on? If so, what games are supposed to be featured?
humbag

Its only a plausible idea for now.
Games could be, 3s, t5, GG, cvs2, mvc2, mb, etc...
