Say you were a 3S player. Whats the point?

To gain meter, quite obviously.

It's just throwing out a move that doesn't hit the opponent. Whiffing moves in some games allows you to gain meter.

wiffing isn't just to gain meter idiots. Use it for grab set ups or parry baits or possible supers after a succesful wiffed attack.

For an expample with Alex you wiff is forward and strong punch just right to where as soon as it gos away you can power bomb them or karra grab them.

The only thing that can stop it is a wake up super or a wake up uppercutt. If u anticipate the upper u can become dangerous and take it farther than a grab set up.

in addition to above

- Also good for mix ups on wake up strategy.

- Whiff a OH go low

- whiff a OH and throw.

- whiff then jump - then parry

What ever you think of to do

I did not hit my post button until later but what true karate said is my exact sentiment.

there ya go^^^

another example...I purposely miss a move with Sheik in ssbm, marth counters....nothing! I combo :)

meter too

zoning....sj. up+hp with iron man may not hit...but will definately keep you're opponent from going there (not in all cases)

or another good reason to whiff is when you're air dashing with someone in mvc2....you CAN't Block....sometimes this means free hail. You see it coming, whiff a lp and are now able to block.

also to land faster after air dash> example being magneto whiffing a hp for slide infinite.

whiffing to mixup and confuse

Pardon me if this deserves to be filed under "so obvious it doesn't deserve to be said," but whiffing is also a good psychological advantage in general. If the momentum is in your favor, fill in the holes by throwing out moves (usually jabs or other quick normals). If your opponent is in a position where you can't necessarily push the offensive but he sees you coming at them like a tornado of teeth and fingernails anyway, it's a good way of keeping them locked in defense mode. Better than just standing there while they come back into an attackable position, anyway.

Nah........these guys are just trying to fuck with you........a whiff is

Whenever you breath on the other person who's playing against you, to piss them off.

Yeah, it's also to freak people out that are fairly new and are like "OMG what are they trying to do?" Kind of like rapid jabs in A3 with Chun. It's also looks kind of funny too!

Whiffs also have other perposes, like extending range... Take Makoto for example, her standing short can be canceled at such a late point, it can be used to extend her range for the likes of kara-Karakusa set-ups or other crazy mix-ups like kara-Oroshi. Even the most complex kara cancels use whiffed moves, they just get canceled at an earlier stage.

Another thing whiffs are good for is footsies... It´s a renound tactic to punnish whiffed moves and footsies utilises this to the full. You constantly see people throwing out whiffed moved to try and entice the opponent to do the same so uit can be punnished. It is risky though as if the other player is wider than you, chances are he´ll know what you´re up to and get you before you know it.

I think you all missed the point.

A whiff is when a move you stick out missed. This usually leaves you open for retaliation, much like real fighting.

However, most of the games we play have goofy properties on most moves, leading to the OTHER applications of whiffing, such as whiffing for meter, or even as far as kara-cancelling.

I concur.

Whiffing is completely missing and possibly being punished because of it.

Whiffing on purpose to trick your opponent is baiting.

IE the Raph vs Casey fight in the first tmnt movie. Casey swings and Raph sucks in his stomach, causing the bat to miss by a couple inches.

Raph: Whiffer!

It most always can translate to "not hit".

In the majority of instances it describes an attack executing and animating through its hit frames, but it doesn't hit. (punish the whiff/your invincibility will make it whiff/whiff a ducking strong punch to build meter/etc)

There are more precise terms for the other instances when you purposefully "whiff" a move while incorporating another technique alongside.

Raphael knows best.
