I'm in college right now, but I realize that even though I'm doing ok and on progress to my degree. I don't have an appreciation for life ( and I know some of you might think I'm stupid ) and would like to experience what is out there in the world. I would also like some discipline as well.

I used to be a really disciplined person but for some reason in college I dont know what the hell happened.

So what I was thinking about was the air force.

If I'm fluent in Korean do they send me to Korea automatically? Or do i get sent to places randomly?

Any thoughts?

I don't know the way the AF works but when I was going through basic and AIT, our active guys pretty much were told they were going to Seoul, Korea. In the Army, they'll pretty much put you were they need you unless you have something in your contract that says otherwise. Keep in mind, this is if you're going active. If you're not, I suggest that you do. I was NG for my six years with the exception of duty over in Bosnia. The guard and reserve sucks IMO. My company was full of douchbags and it's not even close to as structured or disciplined as active. Since you're fluent in Korean though, that definately helps your chances of going to Korea if that's where you want to go.

If you are fluent in Korean, and you decide to be a linguist, then you will probably be put in Korea. If you enlist and don't become a linguist or bother taking the language proficiency exams (but if the job you choose doesn't care if you speak another language or not then it doesn't matter) then you won't get put in Korea - you'll get put wherever they need you unless you specified a location in your contract. This definitely applies for the Army and probably goes for the rest of the services, because the language proficiency exams are military wide and not service specific.

Although if you already are well onto your way with a degree, why enlist? Finish your degree and get commissioned as an officer, if anything. If you are trying to get some discipline and trying to see the world, the military is great... if you want to lock yourself in of a few years of it. If you are in one of those life crisis type situations, just take a fucking vacation.

I'll have to agree with Ducky on this one.. Only reason I didn't go to college was because I have no idea what I wanted to do with my life. Why should I pay money for a degree I probably won't even use. If you're really serious about joining the military, finish your degree and get a comission.

I'll just say that I love being in the military, although it does have it's moments. I love what I do and I'm proud of it. 2 years ago, I wouldn't have ever thought of myself being so far away from home doing the things I'm doing now.

Speaking of which, Ducky, I am getting a little tired of Okinawa, now. Nothing to do but waste money here. It is pretty cool, though, blowing up old WWII UXO's. Just the off-duty hours are meh. Can't wait to take leave sometime and get back stateside.

You better come up with more reasons than that, to make the decision. You also gotta be sure you REALLY want to see what's out there in the world.

But wait a sec, you said Air Force right?
Yo guy, you better get that commision to officer.

Either way though, there's much to be had in the military. i'm telling you it's UPS AND DOWNS over and over.

Think hard on joining the military......when you are in there you are no longer belonging to urself....you are Uncle Sam bitch. I was in the AF for 4 years....was stationed in japan for like 2 and a half and finished up the rest in South Dakota......I got really lucky going to japan.....i swapped orders with a girl that didnt want to go and she went where i was going to go in North carolina....If you dont like someone telling you what to do then dont join....if you the type that wanna tell ur boss at work to fuck off and actually do it dont join. There are good things about the military......Girls love guys in military. Sometimes you do get to go to some pretty damn cool places (like japan). Free college tuition. Make decent money. Military takes care of dental, medical stuff. By all means.....IF YOU ARE SCARED TO GO TO IRAQ......Dont join!!!!! All branches of military go...AF,Army,Marines,Navy.....and all types of jobs from cooks to mechanics to computer desk geeks go to iraq. I inspected aircraft for damage and i was going if i didnt get out first........anyways i broke it down for you the way it is.....dont trust recuiters what ever you do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Korea sucks.....you dont go there automatically and in Korea you exercise (simulating war) and trust me exercises suck. You gotta wear all this chemical defense suits and you work long hours....also in Korea you have a curfew......that means you gotta be back on base by a certain time or else u get in trouble.....I did hear of the korean girls loving america guys and basically when you go off base there are a ton of bars filled with korean women that either fucks for free or at a low price!!!!

From what I'm hearing the Military has changed a bit. My mom retired from the military after 20yrs of service and she would tell me about all the "adventures" she would go on. She said that you used to be able to choose where you wanted to go when you enlist, but it looks like that has changed. She also said that those where the best years of her life, even at times of war, The Gulf War that is. After you retire/leave the military, be prepared to be a whole new person. Everything in civilian life just seems so fucked up. You'll miss the order that the military puts things in.

Im thinging on joining to, but everyone told me to join the AF, meh I have no desire at this point to join the military, but my brother (navy) and sister (national gaurd) is in it.My sister is in iraq which sucks because she is fighting a senseless war.IMO I look at joining the military a last ditch effort at getting a job, O yea and my father would kill me if i decide to join but who cares what he says.

He's not a woman, he can't just go on "adventures." They'll actually make him work.

The military won't really change anything, ultimately you've hit the realization that life is pretty damn empty and meaningless. This doesn't mean you should kill yourself or be emo or anything, it just means you have to accept it is what it is. You eat, sleep, work, drink and fuck. Most people do a lot of the latter two to distract themselves on how meaningless it all really is. Other people seek spiritualism, whether it be through religion or something else. Travelling and seeing as much of the world as possible might be the only true way to get meaning out of life, or if you're one of the lucky few that can actually make an impact in the world. I don't mean "helping" people as a job or something, like a doctor. I mean go out there, get in the community, and help build something. But how many people can do that? Not many.

See if you can get involved in your community somehow, in some interest groups or something. Maybe become religious. I would try those things first before taking the extreme step of joining the military. That being said, the military is sometimes a good option. I know JAG wanted me before, they offered me full tuition for law school and a guaranteed job after I graduated. I didn't want to be locked in, but now that I think about it, it probably wasn't a bad deal.
