View Full Version : Kids don't watch cartoons anymore?

Ok.
So I turn on the TV in the middle of the day expecting more than Judge whoever. I flip through the channels and I don't spot any cartoons. It dawns on me... American cartoons are dead.
Seems like all the great American cartoons of our time, TMNT, Transformers, chip 'n dales, Thundercats are all gone, buried. And if there are any cartoons on TV, it's all dubbed rubbish where they switch a pirate's cigarette for a lolipop.
So what do kids do when they're at home nowadays? Play WOW? I mean, wtf happened to the American cartoon industry and its audience?

They watch that crap(well, most of it) called anime. And even then they still prefer that new crap over the old stuff(Zeta Gundam, Captain Herlock, etc.).
Also, video games are all the rage these days. Welcome to 2006.

Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends being the only good 'toon on TV right now. The last great American cartoon was Justice League Unlimited. And of course anything by Bruce Timm = instant genious.

Kids don't like cartoons because they feel that it is 'childish'. They want to be grown but don't have a clue as to what that is. So instead of cartoons they watch live action disney channel and nickelodeon shows that all take place in high school, but none of the shit is like any real high school. It gives them a false since of maturity even though it is even more childish, tame, and cartoony with wacky sound effects and such.
I have a cousin that is eight right now (I think) and she is over our house all the time and I see this shit first hand and it is fucking sad. She is addicted to crappy television and has gotten progressively dumber and has just joined the ranks of the other zombies.
It can only get worst from here as far as 'childrens' entertainment goes. If I ever have kids it is old school dvd box sets all the way... thats assuming I can trick some dumb girl into fucking me let alone accept my seed, lol.
the american cartoon industry doesn't really give a damn about its target audience anymore, so the audience doesn't give a damn about the products anymore either. makes sense to me.

They're on NICK and TOON.
And Saturday mornings.
Actually, it's probably better this way, so kids can do their homework and/or play outside while there's still light out after school.
Not that I don't expect a large amount of kids to have cable/satellite (aside: satellite owns the shit out of digital cable, btw. I've tried both, and satellite is just plain better in every regard except for slight load times. Also, don't be fooled; cable signals can be interrupted just as easily as satellite signals), where they have access to cartoons 24/7 anyway.
i have a feeling it wasnt because kids werent watching cartoons but probably kids sponsors dont pay as much as adult oriented sponors.
i think kids watch the same amount of cartoons as they used to...maybe just a bit less. but if these obese kids are any indication, their still watchin cartoons.

anime took over everything, even american made cartoons now rip off of anime to get a audience, like she spies, that cartoon on nick with the female robot, fucking sweat drops and everything.... All thats on tv now is anime, and ANImerica.
the old classics are on cartoon network, the rest are dead.

Cartoon network rules all ass. But yea I started noticing this too, there was a time when afternoon cartoons were king. They had Darkwing duck on one channel, Fox Kids on another, and then all the abc toons. That was just on regular non cable television.
I feel bad for poor kids without cable, no toons whatsoever until saturday, and those cartoons usually suck ass. No justice league, no quality, no anything. Turtles is about the only good show on fox box (if it's even on still) and I guess the batman is sorta okay even though it's stylized, soulless, kung fu matrix wannabe drivel.

there not alot of serious cartoons out there either. I mean i come from school and watch spongebob or some other nick show. Most of the cartoons are just for laughs. I barely watch cartoon network anymore unless its toonami or adult swim. But the majority of those shows are anime or is anime influenced. I still believe cartoons have hope if the people can realize that its still an entertainment medium for all ages. People just need to give cartoons a chance.

Also, Toei made the original TF's series, not any american company. Also its based on a japanese toy line, so OG Transformers = not American. Amirite?

DAMN I miss the good old days. I'd get up Saturday morning and watch Dragon Warrior, The Comic Strip (Karate Kat, Mini-Monsters), switch to CBS and watch Wildfire, then Supercade (Pac man, Donkey Kong), then Pink Panther and Sons, Pandamoneum, Kissyfur go over to ABC and watch The Chipmunks, Winnie The Pooh, Looney Tunes, then The Real Ghostbusters, back to CBS for CBS Storybreak, then back to ABC for ABC Weekend Specials. Those days are long since gone, and most of these cartoons/shows will never be released on dvd...
Now we have stupid faded-looking kiddy CGI shows like Bratz, Viva Pinata, shit like Monster Allergy, TMNT Fast Forward, kiddy anime dubs (there's no way in hell that a company should be allowed to release ONLY dubbed anime in stores, with NO japanese option...fuckin' 4kids) and half-ass flash cartoons like Pucca and Dragon Booster. I don't have much faith that things are gonna get better unless they bring back the old stuff.

Name a Gundam series that is airing on TV right now? America hates Gundam. And that Seed shit is garbage. U.C. Gundam will never fly with the mainstream. Gundam Wing will be the only Gundam series to ever catch on with people and that show sucked. Hard.
DBZ is the only one worth mentioning. And maybe FMA. Anime owning the youth of America is bad. I've been watching anime for about 13 years now and the new stuff is some of the worst. And till this day I'll take Dexter's Laboratory, Freakazoid!, Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, Batman TAS, JL/JLU, and many other toons from youth over the current wave of anime garbage out there plaguing my TV screen nowadays.
Hell, Cartoon Network used to be the shit with Looney Tunes airing every night. What the fuck happened to June Bugs? Those were the greatest June weekends of my life.

Alot has changed, Just yesterday i was in Toy's R us.....I had great memorys of this place because they had sooooo many toys. It was like heaven then, but when i walked in i noitced how lame the toys are now a day's. There not even really toys...They talk and move around by themselfs.. No imagination required. Also everything was like 30$ plus...It was crazy.
Almost 10 years later and Saturday morning still feel weird waking up too and not watching cartoons. Not to long ago, i tried to flip threw the stations to see what was coming on saturday morning.....Nothing.
I remember when fox, nbc, abc, and more showed cartoons from 6:00- 10:30 am on sat. And if it wasn't a cartoon it was something like beakmans world or something intresting.
Weekday mornings there where times I wanted to stay home from school because Beast wars came on and 8am. Weekday evenings I all i had was from 4-7:00 (TNT showed old waner bro cartoons till 7m) to watch cartoons.
Videogames, "anime" and middle school drama shows have all but taken over. Like someone said earlier everyone wants to be grown....

What happened to all the looney toons? I learned so much shit from those damn cartoons. I pretty much shaped my life on Bugs Bunny and shit.
They turned into crappy anime-esque crime fighters with horrible personalities and voice actors. RIP OG Looney Toons.
There is the new Tom & Jerry cartoons out now...the problem is the fact that there are so many "better" "cartoons" (as kids say) out now that I doubt the show has an audience. With the exception of Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends I'll have to agree.
Name a Gundam series that is airing on TV right now? America hates Gundam. And that Seed shit is garbage. U.C. Gundam will never fly with the mainstream. Gundam Wing will be the only Gundam series to ever catch on with people and that show sucked. Hard.
U.C. Gundam was the only timeline that I enjoyed...with the exception of the broken psychic-esque abilities. Still had a great story though.
Also, Toei made the original TF's series, not any american company. Also its based on a japanese toy line, so OG Transformers = not American. Amirite?
wrong.
while the origins of the pre-transformers were japanese (diaclone and microman), the idea of the Transformers and its universe were created by Marvel for Hasbro. While the cartoon was produced by Toei, the cartoon was tailored specifically for American audiences (you can tell by the mouth of the characters). The cartoon and the toys were lated exported to Japan.

Zeta Gundam was too good. Although, I still hold the original 0079 story dear to my heart. Also, War in the Pocket was the best OVA released out of the U.C. related OVA's they released. Can't forget about G Gundam as well. That show was the shit.
The only Gundam series I have yet to watch is Turn A Gundam and ZZ Gundam.

you can't put ALL the blame on anime here man.
the American execs got lazy with American action cartoons, plain and simple. not only did action cartoons become less serious, the intensity went right down the drain.
i judge most cartoons by the theme songs.
remember when you were kid? and you could tell how hype a cartoon was going to be simply from the intensity of the theme song? the GOOD american cartoons never skimped on the intensity. every great show had a great theme song. sure, they were cheesy as hell at times, but thats what made them American.
think about all the great theme songs from your favorite action cartoons. when you heard the Batman: TAS music come on, you sat your ass down in giddy anticipation. the JLU music? EPIC. when you hear it, you know something great is gonna happen. even Mighty Max had a dope opener. Bucky O'Hare anyone? "CAPTIAN BUCKY!!! CAPTAIN BUCKY O'HARE!!! HE GOES WHERE NO ORDINARY RABBIT WOULD DARE!!! ....LETS CROAK US SOME TOADS!!!1"
remember the (D.I.C.) G.I. Joe opening theme?:
(Got to get tough! Yo Joe! Got to get tough! Yo Joe!)
You know you've got to stand tall when it comes down to the wire!
You got to play rough when you're crossed by the line of fire!
You got to have guts to stand for your rights.
You got to keep a grip and just hold on tight.
You got to do the fightin' with all o' your might.
You got to keep the target straight ahead in your sight!
see what i mean? Bucky O'Hare is talking about "croaking" him some toads. G.I. Joe was telling kids to KEEP THE TARGET STRAIGHT AHEAD IN THEIR SIGHTS for crying out loud!!! you know why good theme songs (and hence good action cartoons) are dead? its because kids these days are Pampered Pansies. these same kids who don't watch cartoons are from the same generation of kids who saw dodge ball get banned from their schools.
cartoons used to be about plain ol' Good versus Evil. most of us grew up in the Regan era, and the neocons in power at the time decided to feed us these themes of Ultimate Good v.s. Ultimate Evil - hence Autobots and Deceptacons in Transformers - hence The Joes and Cobra in G.I. Joe. - hence He-Man and Skeletor in Masters of the Universe/He-Man. those days are done. now the battle between Good and Evil is an "internal conflict" that is carried out in the story of ONE character. take Yu Gi Oh for instance - always doing battle with his "dark" side - receeding into his "inner mind" and shit. also notice how Yugi has a shitty opening theme.
then people say, "oh but, that's only because the NEW cartoons are so much more mature and sophisticated now." please, no they aren't. all they did was take what made American cartoons GREAT in the first place (the Good v.s. Evil themes) and replaced it with kid-oriented AMERICAN TV shows like Blake Holsey high or whatever the fuck. anime had nothing to do with it.
if ANYthing kids turned to anime to fill the void of action and intensity that American cartoons USED to get right most of the time. its probably easier to import shows from Japan anyway. more outsourcing from the bastards in corporate America. see what the American execs have reduced the kids to? now all they have to look forward to is "WIND SCAAAR!!" from booty-ass Inu Yasha - and fuck you to whoever said that was a good show.
American execs could make cartoons good again if they'd just use better music for their shows. why is it that anime can have Rock openings but American cartoons can't? why do they change the opening theme for say ...Naruto when it is clear that the original opener for seaon two was 100x more great. why does the music have to be so fucking shitty? - like Ben 10? it wouldn't take much to use a simple rock song for once. they could use Me Against the World from lame-ass Simple Plan for a cartoon opener and it would be better than the Ben 10 theme song.

Batman: TAS kept me coming back because of the storylines. The opening theme was just an added bonus. Same with Justice League. All it took me were the promo's for Batman: TAS to make me a loyal viewer.
You also forgot about the SWAT Kats theme. THAT right there pumped me up for every episode.
then people say, "oh but, that's only because the NEW cartoons are so much more mature and sophisticated now." please, no they aren't.
People are stupid though. Throw any of those cartoons into a pit with Batman: TAS and anyone will tell you that the level of maturity contained in just one episode of Batman makes any cartoon cringe. Batman was and still is the master of inner conflict.

Hahaha, speaking of Theme Songs...in my opinion, ThunderCats and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles(late 80's early 90's version) had the single best animated and best Theme Song...I fucken loved it. Even now when I watch the theme song/Intro, I can't help but become my little kid self again...I miss those type of intros seriously.
Btw, no one mentioned it, but I really liked Robotech back in the 80's too...fucken rocked. Sadly all the cartoon's today, especially some of the "anime" look a likes are downright stupid, it seems to have some "pokemon" type event...it's getting annoying and downright ridiculous. At first, I was really happy that the US was getting into anime mainstream...but now, after what is happening...I dunno what to say anymore.
DBZ ftw still.

True batman: TAS was very mature but don't forget about "Spiderman" that aired on fox. Damn near every episode peter was getting screwed someway just like the comic. what about the inner turmoil that Jimmy Lee went through on "Double Dragon" or the stress you get from running a successful night club and protecting Dino City. What about getting turned in to a cyborg and having your name changed to Long Arm.
so Many great cartoons I could go on and on.

Go-bots was a generic rip of the transformers which made it funny as hell.
"the Defenders of the earth" With flash gorden, the phantom and the nice ass theme song.
I guess the ewoks were to furry for you.
and bionic six was just plan down right garbage. Was it because people from different races came together to save the day that made it a weak cartoon. was it the fact that the black guy was smarter then everyone else that made the show suck. If bionic Six was weak so is ever other team cartoon show.

I actually watched this show about 2 weeks ago. I don't think you can really bring this show up because it's actually pretty good if you watch the japanese version with subtitles, the American version is absolutely stupidly butchered. And yes, the Japanese version has good theme songs, or rather, it sounds better and according the the translation isn't so bad. That's the other thing about America, for a society that allegedly values free speech, we are censored like crazy in just about everything. If these cartoons weren't made for pansies, then maybe they wouldn't be as bad as they are now. I can't remember cartoons being so retarded before.

The english version is absolute crap. There is no "heart of the cards" and "shadow realm" bullshit in the japanese version. The soundtrack is a LOT better. The characters actually grow and are also not stupid idiots. The villains also have much better motivation. I don't want to spoil stuff since I know you haven't watched it all yet, but the difference is huge. Season 1 is kind of crap either way, so that doesn't bother me too much. But the Battle City Arc is good, as is the Domo, KC Cup and the Pharoah/Bakura arc. I haven't been able to see everything in japanese, but i've seen enough that I can piece together the stories and appreciate it. The japanese version is definitely one of the better animes I've seen. It's not the best, but it's very solid. I need to see if I can find torrents from the guys that translated towards the end. I'll hit you up on AIM to get the translation groups names I guess at some point.

You failed to mention Gundam X which might mean you dont like it, but its one of my favs, still UC owns alter universe.
Seed is trash, kira is pretty much unbeatable now which just makes the show crap because you know when he shows up his just going to own everybody.
Char and Amuro had a great rivalry like most of the characters in UC.
Oh and cartoons also suck here in the UK now, hell I remember the days I used to wake up at 6am just to watch Sharky and George crime busters of the sea.
Someone already said it but my kids will get a full dose of 80s/90s DVD's screening time.
When I'm on the bus or something I hear kids talking about either myspace or naruto as much as I like anime i do feel its been over done.
Besides when it comes to anime I much prefer the more Adult/Mature releases and not I place this card face down crap.
dbz bleach naruto (without shitty dubbing and edits) have some crazy ass fights so Im cool with them.
What are these kids going to do for nostalgia kicks when they reach our age?
dam their screwed myspace and youtube etc will be long dead and buried into the internet void.

I would appreciate it if Serp or Das could hook me up with those YGO subs as well.
I remember a clip of the original Yu-Gi-Oh! where Yami completely altered this burgler's perception in the shadow realm to the point of where he could only see clocks and watches. His eyes were also replaced with clocks and I think gears were flooding out of his wrists.

I also liked Gundam X as well. I'm still surprised that it's not out on DVD in America yet because it is an AU story after all. Gives CN something else to air, rather than killing U.C. with its drastic edits.

America failed its youth when they stopped airing School House Rock. Even though they were stupid, songs were catchy and actually taught you something.
What about that Zack Of All Trades guy with the psa songs about jobs? That shit was tight when I was a kid.

:wow: I guess I am with most of the OG generations on here cause I use to watch mostly everything that was mentioned when I was a really lil runt. I still miss all of it as well.
Yo though does anyone remeber the botmasters, savage dragon, street sharks or wildcats [yes the comic cartoon and the one with the pilot cats]?
Some reason the botmasters, ronin warriors, real ghostbusters and comic wildcats theme songs still get stuck in my head from time to time.

Yeah, that was the Toei series. Other than watching Yugi talk with Sailor Uranus' voice and act like an overall asshole, it wasn't that impressive, unfortunately. Compared to Toei's other animes, it looked like a dog puked on the animation cels. And the Yugi cheerleaders are even more annoying and useless than in Duel Monsters, especially Honda/Tristan.

For the record, the new Tom & Jerry Kids cartoon is garbage. The animation is worse (characters move like they don't have bones), the music is worse (how can they replace classical music with proprietary shit tunes), and it's non-violent. On top of all that, Jerry ALWAYS wins, and he also has a VERY annoying voice.
Also, please hook me up with the Yu-Gi-Oh too.

double wrong.
It was thought up by two Americans, graduates of Rhode Island Art School, written and story-boarded in Burbank, California.

Code Lyoko is from France, that is, it was done by a french animation studio, and debuted in France. For crying out loud, the theme song is titled Un Monde Sans Danger (http://www.rhio2k.com/miscmedia/Un%20Monde%20Sans%20Danger.mp3) (A world without danger). I don't care who thought it up, it came from France. It is French. If it was done by american animators in America, then yeah, it would be american. France did all the work on this crappy show, they get all the credit. All we did was dub it to English and fuck up the theme song.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned X-men yet. That was my shit back in the day, along with Fox's Spiderman. Two years ago, my friend told me I could catch reruns on abc family but I hardly watch TV anymore. Even when they come out with an updated version of one of my old favorites, it's just not the same.

Ya that show kicked ass, man the other day some guy in my art class was all talking about one of his friend's mother looking exactly like Mrs.Bighead.
I had a wtf look when he brought up rocko:rofl: , damn didn't know it's gotten so popular over the years with adults.
