Some kids were into heavier punk, and some kids into softer poppier punk. They heavy kids started "hardcore punk" and the poppier kids started "emotional punk" or "emotional hardcore." That is where emo came from. Usually the people into this sort of thing refer to it as indie rock. They don't like being called anything. A lot of people labeled them "indie rockers." If you really want to piss the "emos" off, call them a "scenester." They HATE that. It's funny this all got so popular recently.


BTW, I'm not an "emo." I used to be WAY into hardcore bands when I was growing up.
