View Full Version : Your All-Time Fav Cartoons on DVD

Earlier this week I purchased two of my fav cartoons on DVD:
Darkwing Duck vol. 1
Batman Beyond Season One
Darkwing Duck is just one of the best things that has ever come out of Disney. Jim Cummings is easily one the greatest voice actors ever, voicing the series protagonist and one of the series best villains, Nega Duck. Though my fav villain in the series is by far Megavolt. I just like how he's insane, funny and persistent. Also Darkwing has sent him to the electric chair... twice. How many other bad guys had a mention of that in the show?
One of my fav quotes is from an ep on disc one called "Getting Antsy." Darkwing has been shrunk and he's surrounded by giant ants.
Darkwing: I'm surround by giant ants! But Darkwing Duck does not cower when he's outmatched. I am the terror that flaps in the night! I am... *takes a look around at giant ants*...The smallest, weakest thing in the whole place, and I am also outta here! *runs away* That dialogue just cracks me up everytime I hear it.
Batman Beyond is a fine, fine show that never should have been canceled. I love the music in this show. The intro alone is just brilliant. Seeing Rebirth parts I & II again was awesome. I loved seeing old Bruce just whale on the Jokerz. Nice to see he can still own fools in his old age. And finding out that Will Freiddle is the voice of Terry McGinnis/Batman... wow that was a shock. I mean, the writers turned him into such an idiot in the last two seasons of Boy Meets World that hearing his voice is such a serious role was a real shock. Oh and Dana is TEH HOTNESS  Screw Melinee/Ten. I MUST have Season Two with my next pay check.
One of the things I really like about the DCAU is how all the cartoons are connected. Batman, Superman, Justice League, JLU, Static Shock, Batman Beyond are all connected in someone. Batman Beyond probably has from what I'm hearing, the coolest connection to another DC cartoon in JLU's Epilogue. That's one season two of JLU, right? I've yet to see it and I don't think season two of JLU is out yet.

Yeah, I've been meaning to read Madman for a while already because of Freakazoid. And since it's also along the lines of The Tick as well. Superhero quirkiness ftw.

Ah, The Tick. Such a great show. They brought out Season One on DVD this year, too. Gotta pick it up. But first come my Disney Afternoon Toon DVDs and DCAU DVDs.
Anyone know where I can get the uncut version of Batman Beyond: Return of The Joker? After reading about the edits that were made, I must have the uncut version now. Man, Joker seriously effed up Robin in that movie.
Has Sam & Max been brought out on DVD yet?
Also, I'm still waiting for my blasted Dino Riders to come out. Same with Spider-Man & His Amazing Friends.
And would it kill Marvel to get off their keisters and put '90s X-Men and Spider-Man out on DVD? I'm talking full seasons, not this 4 eps per DVD crap.

Yes, Teddy Ruxpin is still my favorite.
Volume 1 and 2 have been released..I haven't seen volume 3 yet. They have 5 episodes per disc with some bonus features. Im beginning to suspect that after the first volume, they were skipping some of the episodes, but I still have to buy them. At least it's not a one-disc release with the "viewers choice" episodes only or something.

~AnthonyI've seen some mentions of a box set for the first few volumes, too. As for whether any episodes are being skipped, I think there are episode guides on the web somewhere to use for reference. From what I read, the old VHS releases jumped around a lot, spliced together several episodes, skipped others, etc. compared to the episodes that actually aired on TV.

That's a cool av, man. :wgrin:
Gargoyles was another Disney toon that rocked hard. Some people didn't like the Goliath Chronicles where Xhantos was a good guy but I thought the show was still good even then. Disney toons owned for so long. Mighty Ducks just sucked all sorts of things. They made up for it with Kim Possible, though. The Kim Possible movies are also pretty good.
More on the DCAU. Man, it's just so freaking good. Batman The Animated Series is what started the whole thing back in 1992. I still have to get all three seasons of that show on DVD. The New Batman Adventures had some good eps but I didn't like the redesign of some characters. Gordon lost his buffness, Catman was just plain hideous and what they did to Joker was just lame.
The Batman must be pretty good overall if it's in it's 4th season. I've seen a few eps and I can honestly say it isn't too shabby. Joker looks more insane than ever. However, I'm not digging Batgirl's design. No. Just, no.

Worst thing about old cartoons is when they aren't as good as you remember them to be. Transformers still owns and so does Gi-Joe but He-Man... oh man. A travesty it is.
Garfield & Friends was also tight. I used to watch it every Staurday when it came on.

Then you'd have to be one of the people who number in the double-digits who DID like it. Even Greg Weisman disavows that season as non-canon. I personally hated it because it was a MAD letdown. All those cool characters intoduced in the previous seasons...forgotten for the boring-ass Quarrymen, and the super-limited, pedestrian plot the new writers imposed on the series. Both of those elements hindered the series worse than Kim Kap Hwan paralyzed from the waist down. If only the Goliath Chronicals had the writers that the previous seasons had, it could have been actually good.

I agree. The way season 2 ended with things "up in the air" as far as what is the next chapter for the group, Elisa and Goliath's relationship, etc. it made for a better ending. There didn't have to even be a season 3. Furthermore, the way season theee ended seemed rushed. They exposed the gargoyles to the public and then acknowledged their rights and that's it..so what?. The artwork was completely squared off and shotty (ala Ronin Warriors) and the storylines just werent compelling as season 2..In season 2 EVERYTHING was connected. I mean, they would pick up on some little detail from an episode way back, and can come up with an entire arc behind it..and it made sense!.. Macbeth and Demona's origin was so intriguing and they didnt even explain it until late in the the series.....Great Job :) . But at least they completed the series and it wasn't taken off the air.

I have the one season of 12 eps. on tape from a 1986 TV recording my friend made. A few tapes float abound Ebay. Terrible box art, it has the early Megaman complex (don't judge a book by its cover).
I met an assistant animator who worked on it in Japan at TMS. Check out the credits. It's truly a U.S./Japan team-up.

Man, you're making me remember how awesome that show was. So Goliath Chronicles was't canon? Ah, well. I have to admit that the first two seasons were much better than GC. Easily one of the best Disney toons. The best for me is probably Duck Tales.
Another cartoon I loved was Super Mario Bros. 3. That show was so good. Used nearly all of the power-ups from the game and Luigi got equal screen time as Mario. I didn't like Super Mario World nearly as much. Speaking of game cartoons, where is out Captain N DVD?

Rumor has it that it'll be out in February of '07.
Also, I purchased Star Trek the Animated Series today for shits and giggles. Its surprisingly good and still provides laughs at the same time.

Captain N is coming to DVD next year February 27. There's like an omega thread where you can talk to DVDinsider who's working on it, he works for Shout! They did the DVDs for Inspector Gadget, the Super Mario cartoons, the Legend of Zelda cartoon and Sonic cartoons.
http://forum.captainn.net/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1137610373/0
It's going to have the first two seasons on it, season 3 may come later, but season 3 was really bad compared to the first 2 seasons, it only had seven episodes and was animated very poorly. Shout! can't use the licensed music from the show when it first aired like "Highway to the Danger Zone" and songs like that due to rights so they will use the generic music played during the reruns of the show. It's also gonna have the original Nintendo Power comic where Captain N started! More info -
http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=6619
About Gargoyles - Yeah, like Rhio2K said season 3 is not canon. Exception being the very first episode of season 3, that was the only one the original creator Greg Weisman worked on. Currently they are making a comic book series of the real canon of what happened in season 3 and in the first issue they retold what happened during half of the first episode of season 3 pretty much word for word. I guess after issue 2 they will get into new territory.

They released some episodes of the Real Ghostbusters on DVD, the theory being by fans of the show is that if those sell well they will release the entire thing.
I did see a bootleg of the entire series for like 100 bucks at a comic book convention, if I had the money at the time I would of picked it up, but as you know there's lots of stuff to get at cons. I still never saw the Monday thru Friday episode with the flute that had the power to destroy the world, everytime I talk to someone about the show they tell me that was the greatest episode ever and I feel like ramming my head against a brick wall several times for missing it... :annoy:
One of my favorite episodes from the Monday and Friday ones was when the entire team went to Hell, but they never actually said the word Hell. Peter said something like, "So this is what this place is like? People are always telling me to go here."

Ghost Busters was so freaking dope. I watched that cartoon religously when I was a kid. I watched it on Fox and on ABC. Never understood why companies gave episodes to two different networks back then. They did the same thing with Darkwing Duck and Goof Troop.
Yeah, they got away with a ton of stuff back then with toons. I was watching the eps "Just Us Justice Ducks" (some of the greatest eps on the DVDs) on the vol. 1 Darkwing Duck DVD. They say the words 'kill'and 'blood'. They actually said kill a number of times.
So Lorenzo Music did the voice of Garfield, Tummy, and Peter Bankman.
knew I'd heard the voice of Peter Bankman somewhere before when I watched the first ep of season 1 Ghost Busters.
Inspector Gadget has already been released on DVD? Nice. I thought there ware some paralles between IG and Darkwing Duck. Of course Gadget is a complete screw up who has his niece and dog doing all his work... without his knowledge. Darkwing can actually fight and he's a competent hero.

It mostly depends on where you lived. In New York they gave The Real Ghostbusters on ABC - Channel 7. Then on Fox, for us Channel 5 they gave a different season of episodes plus reruns from the Saturday episodes on Monday through Friday. This is before Fox Family even existed.
Both Darkwing Duck and Goof Troop recieved this treatment as was said, for us the Monday-Friday episodes of those shows were on Channel 11 where they ran the Disney Afternoon block. But yeah if you only watched these shows on Saturdays you missed a lot.
I believe the Jackie Chan cartoon recieved a similar treatment with lots of episodes that never aired on Saturday. Teen Titans also had some episodes that didn't air on Saturday during prime time when it was running but not a lot.

They started releasing late '80s early '90s TMNT on DVD in late '04 I believe. vol. 1 has the first 5 eps. Where as vol. 2 has eps 6-15 or 16 on it. Vol. 3 may be out but I'm not sure.
As for the other toons you mentioned, don't know about those, but all of 'em deserve DVD releases.
Yeah, if you didn't watch Darkwing Duck or Goof Troop on Fox, you missed A LOT. IMO, Fox got the best batch of eps from both those shows.
Real Ghostbusters was so awesome. I didn't know JMS was a writer for the show. He helped with the show's darker tones. Then the show got so lighthearted (once JMS left) that it turned off older fans and it was cancelled. The ep Ragnaork and Roll sounds great. "So this is what this place is like? People are always telling me to go here." That line is made 1000x funnier by the fact that he didn't say the world Hell.

Yeah, Lorenzo Music was doing Garfield up until 1994, after he left GB and Dave came in. It was the same time that Arsenio Hall stopped doing Winston's voice and Janine's VA changed too - seasons 4-7 on GB. Lorenzo died in 2001.

I also used to watch that Kid N Play cartoon, but I can barely remember any of it now. I can't believe I forgot about Ghostbusters though. I definitely wouldn't mind owning it on dvd either. I'm already getting Gargoyles & I'll also be getting the new G1 Transformers dvd's when they come out next year.

Conan The Barbarian. Was that the one where he had a tight crew? One of the members that rolled with him was a chick in a pink top. Think her name was Jasmine. Man, I can't believe her and Conan were only friends.
Heethcliff is on DVD? Sweet. I loved that cartoon. But I'll pick up Garfield & Friends first. Toon Garfield = greatest cat. Ever.
I did some reading about Real Ghost Busters on wiki. 140 eps total. Not bad. Pretty freaking good, really. Most toons never get that many eps. Ha, they add the "Real" in the title to snub a company called Filmation that had a show called Ghost Busters. And Lorenzo Music dided in 2001. Man, that sucks. Had no idea. R.I.P. Lorenzo Music.
Did Duck Tales the Movie ever get a DVD release? That movie was freaking sweet. I still need to get vol.s 1-2 of Duck Tales on DVD. I think DT was the most popular Disney Toon with 100 eps. Darkwing Duck had 91. Goof Troop had more than 60.
Rocko's Modern Life was awesome. You can never watch that show without busting out laughing. Speaking of Nick Toons, where the blasted Doug DVDs? That show was brilliant. Killer Tofuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!! I wouldn't mind seeing Hey, Arnold on DVD either.

Bad news for TaleSpin fans. Two eps have been banned for certain networks when the show aired a few years ago and we don't know if they will be released on a DVD set. I forget the names but I one ep is where Baloo went to a city called Pandala and then the pandas invated Capesuzet. That ep rocked. The other eps is one where a package was delivered to Thembria but it turned out to be a bomb. Man, this freaking sucks. On top of that, all of Plunder and Lightning, the 4 part pilot of TaleSpin hasn't been fully restored on the vol. 1 TaleSpin DVD. It was originally a movie that launched off TaleSpin, but it was devided into 4 parts later on. The two ep pilot of Darkwing Duck has also been edited and it hasn't been fully restored on DVD. Gah. Oh well. At least we have these toons on DVD.
I've heard of Samurai Pizza Cats but never saw it. I thought it might have been anime or something.
Also, the old Mickey, Donald, Goofy & Chip & Dale shorts have been getting DVD releases and they only cost like $9.99. I loved these cartoons. Watched 'em all the time when I was a kid.

just outta curiosity....has anyone ever ate the supermariobro and zelda cereal back in the day???? i did once but i dont remember how it taste but my older brother swears its the best cereal ever!!!
I wanna see how much yall know about old school cartoons.....and this question will let me know if yall were crazy about cartoons back in the day...who in here remembers Bots Master.....its a cartoon where you wore 3D glasses and they did random shit in the show that you could only see with the glasses on. If yall watched that or the other 2 i mentioned yall are worthy!!
HELL YES every single cartoon you listed is great...well, botsmasters was great for nostalgia only ehehe but yeah CONAN was awesome. My favorite american cartoon by far.
I'm not sure if I ever saw the "barbarian" one but the one with the star metal, Needle the phoenix, Greywolf, Jesmine, Seth, Wrathamon, Dregs, etc., that one was called Conan The Adventurer.
A couple of times I saw the series up for grabs in VHS form on ebay but I always got outbid at the last moment

So what about The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse, is that on DVD? Lord that show was funny. They had a great Batman parody, he was called Bat Bat (A Bat dressed up as a Bat) and his sidekick was the Bug Wonder, a little Bug on his elbow! And the intro to the Mighty Mouse cartoon is the greatest cartoon intro song EVER! Off memory so the order of lyrics might be messed up and I might of got some of the words wrong -
Zoom zoom zoom zoom
Bompa bompa bompa bompa
Bompa bompa bompa bompa
Here he comes that Mighty Mouse
In time to vanquish the foe
With a mighty blow!
So don't be afraid anymore
'Cuz things won't be like they've been before!
Here I come to save the day!
Thank goodness Mighty Mouse is on his waaaaay!
So let the trumpet players play
BADDA DA DA DA!
For Mighty Mouse is here to staaaaay!
Bompa bompa bompa bompa
Bompa bompa bompa bompa
Here he comes that Mighty Mouse
Just like a bolt from the blue
With a heart that's true
Fighting evil fighting crime
And always there in the nick nick of time!
Here I come to save the day!
And he will prove that crime will never paaaaay!
So let the trumpet players play
BADDA DA DA DA!

Yeah I think The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse was on CBS on Saturdays, it was done by Ralph Bakshi and much closer to the original Ren and Stimpy than to any of the older Mighty Mouse cartoons. When they spoke you could see their tongues stick out of their mouths just like Ren and Stimpy.
The show was REALLY funny. Mighty Mouse had a secret identity as Mike Mouse. The girl he was always saving in the older cartoons Pearl was his love interest. One of the best ones was when Mighty Mouse and Pearl were finally about to be married. Then just before they exchanged vows Mighty Mouse yelled... "STOP!" The paper the animators were drawing on went on fire and then it went to live action where the animators were crumbling up pieces of paper and throwing them at each other!
Oh hell yeah I'd love a Megas XLR DVD release!
Danger Mouse was on so early I vaguely remember it... I know he was British... don't remember if I liked it or not, or it was just there and it was either watch that or the 5:00 Farmers Report...

I bought DuckTales vol. 1-2 on DVD at Best Buy on Friday. Vol. 1 was priced at $31.99 but when it was rung up at the register, it was $19.99. I love Best Buy. I find it odd that the 5 ep pilot of DuckTales is on vol. 2 instead of vol. 1. It's the same thing with Chip & Dale's Rescue Rangers. Very odd. Oh well.
The Adventures of the Gummi Bears is on DVD. Well, vol. 1 anyway and it has seasons 1-3. Gotta get that. Another Disney show that owned all. I think season 4-6 is coming out in '07.
Goof Troop needs a season DVD release. They released one Goof Troop DVD but it only has 3 eps on it. Freaking gay. I'd also like to see a season DVD release of Bonkers. It may not have been as popular as past Disney Afternoon toons, but I still really enjoyed it.
Anyone remeber the ep of Darkwing Duck called "Time and Punishment"? In that ep, Gosolyan went to the Future where Darkwing became Darkwarrior Duck. He ruled St. Canard with an iron fist. He succeeded where Nega Duck and other villians failed. Heck, even Mega Volt and Qwackerjack were terrified of him. Man, that was a good ep.
Anyone know when Justice League Unlimted Season 2 is coming to DVD? I NEED to get it.

It's nice that the bad guy also does the voice of Payne in A.T.O.M., and lil' miss "scars and sex appeal" (Carbine..who actually hasn't chaged physically from the first version. Thumbs up on that one.) is in nearly every ep in some way, shape, or form, but...this cartoon is shit. No more muscles, no attitude no more coolness...just...ANTICS on bikes. "Under review"? What is it with that bull crap? Freaking release it already!! I doubt the JU/JUL was under review at all. They probably just released that stuff.
They did a new version of Biker Mice From Mars? *Sigh* Another classic cartoon ruined. TMNT: Fast Forward still makes me cry. "Wow this new TMNT series has been rocking hard for 3 years now. OK, let's eff up the series." That's probably what went down behind doors in the meeting for some more "edgier" TMNT toons. Ugh. I was loving the 2003 update TMNT. They had tight villians, they kept using their weapons and the plots were pretty cool. Thanks for once again raping my youth, guys.
Can't believe I forgot about Life With Louie. That show was gold. Needs a DVD release.

Ducktales would be sweet too and Talespin(But mostly because of the cool theme song).
DuckTales came out on DVD in late '05. There are currently vols. 1-2 out of that series with more on the way. TaleSpin vol. 1 was released this year. Unfortunately, the pilot "Plunder and Lightning" is the edited version, which was split into four half hour eps. Disney just got lazy. But I'll still be picking up vol. 1 of TaleSpin before Christmas. That show was freaking awesome. I actually enjoyed it much more than I did Rescue Rangers.
Rhio2k, that's kinda freaky, yet cool how you remember those lines of the lyrics in the TaleSpin opening song. I could never remember those words excpet "spin it" (x3). When I saw Kit cloud surfing, I used to think it was the tightest thing I ever saw.
I'm not quite sure what my fav intro song is for the Disney Toons. Despite the fact that Gargoyles has no lyrics, that track is still sweet. Darkwing Duck is right up there with DuckTales and Rescue Rangers. I think I actually know all the lyrics to Rescue Rangers. I was also fond of Goof Troops intro. Why Disney release a stand alone DVD and not a full blown 3 disc DVD for Goof Troop, I have no idea.

I recommend buying it at Best Buy. The price tag says $24.99, but I wouldn't be surprised if it gets rung up at $19.99. When I bought Darkwing Duck vol. 1 at Best Buy weeks ago, the price said $24.99 but when I looked at my reciet, it said $19.99. I bought DuckTales vol. 1 DVD over the weekend. Price tag said $31.99 but it was rung up at $19.99. Maybe it's just my Best Buy but I sure wasn't gonna ask questions. One of the many great things about watching DuckTales as an adult is that I know pick up on all the puns and relations to other medias I didn't when I was a kid. William Drakesphere, the episode "Top Duck" (GREAT ep. BTW), Robbin Lurch and so many other refferences. And I can't believe I forgot about DuckTale's awesome soundtrack.
