NEW YORK - Police shot three young men who had just left a bachelor party at a strip club early Saturday, killing one man on the day of his wedding, according to police and witnesses. One of the survivors was in critical condition.

It was not immediately clear what sparked the shooting, which produced an outcry from family members and community leaders, including the Rev.
Al Sharpton. The Police Department's chief spokesman, Paul Browne, declined to comment.

The shooting happened just after 4 a.m. near Club Kalua in Queens, said Officer Kathleen Price. She said there were no reports that any officers were wounded. As many as eight officers may have been involved, said Sgt. Mike Wysokowski, another department spokesman.

"All I know, they was celebrating," said Denise Ford, who said her son was one of the survivors. She said the man who died was the groom. "The guy was getting married today."

Relatives said the dead man was Sean Bell, 23.

Robert Porter, who identified himself as Bell's first cousin, said he was supposed to be a DJ at the wedding.

"I still don't want to believe it, a beautiful day like this, and he was going to have a beautiful wedding, he was going to live forever with his wife and children. And this happened," Porter said.

The Rev. Al Sharpton said family members told him that there were no guns in the young mens' car and "there was no reason for the police to shoot."

"On the face of it, it seems to me to be certainly something that causes extreme alarm and must be thoroughly investigated," said Sharpton, who said he was called by a relative of the man who died.

Sharpton said Bell and his fiancee had two children, ages 5 months and 3 years.

Sharpton said after visiting the two wounded men — Trent Benefeld, 23, and Joseph Guzman, 31 — that he was outraged to find the pair handcuffed to their hospital beds. He said one suffered 17 wounds, though it was unclear how many were bullet wounds, and the other man was shot three times.

"We're not anti-police ... we're anti-police brutality," Sharpton said.

Abraham Kamara, 38, who lives a few blocks from the scene of the shooting, said he was getting ready for work when he heard gunfire.

"First it was like four shots," he said. "And then it was like pop-pop-pop like 12 times."

Roy Brown, who said he works as a photographer at the club, said sirens sounded not long after the three men left the club.

"They weren't rowdy or nothing like that," said Brown, 57.

A message seeking comment was left at one phone listing for the club; another phone was not answered.

One of the wounded men was in critical condition at Mary Immaculate Hospital and the other was listed as stable.

Wow, if that's true and they weren't doing anything.. that's one gigantic lawsuit coming up. But still, it's fucked up. To get shot and killed on your Wedding day [though some SRKers would say that's a good thing]? :wasted:

I hate fuckin cops and hope that they burn in hell for what they done to my dad.

Last thanksgiving my dad was driving home and got arrested for doing nothing. This lady that was behind him say that he shift in reverse in the middle stop light/sign and hit her front bumper. As he was driving up the driveway the lady follow him and call the cops on him for hitting her front bumper.

My mom call me on my cell phone told me to get to their house quicking because they going to arrest my dad for hit and run.

As I got there the lady was like he backup and hit my front bumper while I was behind him in a stop light/sign. I look at my dad 2004 Honda Civic back bumper and there wasn't any dent or scracth. The lady was pointing at her front bumper and was showing the black paint from from the accident and it wasn't even black it was gray.

I told the cops that if my dad had hit her front bumper shouldn't my dad bumper have some dent or scracth from the accident because look at the bumper it look have no scracth or paint coming off of it.

The cops didn't care to listen to me because he say that my dad had hit and run. It was my dad word against her because there was no witness to this situtation and I could tell that they were taken her side.

Now my dad is not stupid enough to shift into reverse in the middle of a stop light/sign, shit he been driving for 25 years now.

This is when cops come you should run, if you stay they will kill your ass and make some bullshit up, which in any case anit going to help you because your dead.

i dont think that could ever happen. i know alot of people relate back to rodiny king video and stuff...but i think people wont let that stuff happen anymore. where you have the physical evidence in your face let that slide. its a new generation and new day.

IDK about that. I've seen recent things happening that have been pretty FUCKED up and the police get slaps on the wrists as usual or "they did the right thing for that particulat situation" type deals. I haven't seen a cop go down in a while except a few cases here and there where the cop was fucking up on their own and shit came to light.

Nah son, cops get away with a whole lot of shit and the mayor and the police capt would come out and say they did the right thing or they were justified, and you would never hear about it again. I was following this trial on Court TV about 2 or 3 months ago about these cops beating th shit out of a half black half whit guy at some party IN FRONT OF A BUNCH OF PEOPLE. They beat this dude half to deatha nd one of the cops stuck a pen in his ear and they had picks of this dude when he was in the hospital. He looked like a damn freak cuz they beat him so bad. It was fucked up.

So anyways, the cops said that the guy had one of the cops' badge, but they later found out that the dude was dating the cops' ex-girlfriend. All these witnesses saw the cops beating the hell out of this guy and all 3 of the cops got off because 1 witnesses thought 2 of the cops on the force looked the same and coupldnt tell who was involved in the beating.

Long story shirt: Dude gets beaten almost to death and no cops are arrested. They are just kicked off the force.

I dont hate all police, but I hate corrupt ones, and I also fucking hate the ones who dont break the code of silence.

By the way, this isn't very surprising. Cops are paranoid people too. Paranoid people with weapons and the ability to use them. The fact they're constantly on edge, partly because of their often shitty reputation, leads to a vicuous cycle of abuse of power.

But, meh. Perhaps minorities should invest in bulletproof vests.

But, yeah, cops can do anything. I was running laps at the park around the corner from my house few years ago at 4 in the morning, and a cop car pulls up and 2 officers get out and sit down on the bleachers on the east side of the field to watch. I finish 2 laps at top speed, and one says "Damn...that HAD to be a mile. That was fast.". I'm doing another lap at near-walking speed, and I see the other cop get up, pull his baton and heard him say "Watch this." I was close to the western gate, and you best believe I took it and went home, but at a normal speed so as not to arouse suspicion. No way in hell I'm gonna stick around and be johnny-on-the-spot for some redneck asshole with a badge who has brother-beating on his mind.

The media or the feds. If a cop reported corruption to the media, the media would swarm on it. But evidence and shit is needed. You need a case, otherwise you're just gonna get kicked off the force and have a bunch of cops that hate you.

Hey I'm not the one mentioning how *most* cops are corrupt, especially since I've rarely been harassed by cops; I was merely setting up a pseudo-scenario to portray another possibility.

I dunno. Even good cops have the potential to become bad cops at any moment. Maybe the thread should be more of a "Anti lack of any required respinsibility for abouse of power by cops" thread

I'd like to hope it isn't.The majority of the three cops who did the shooting were minorities (two black, one hispanic). And really, they weren't nice people who got shot (all four of em were ex-cons).

The only thing the cops did poorly was that they didn't kill all four of em. Seriously, 50+ shots and only ONE of them dies.
