Saw this at another forum and thought I ask it here. What are your favorite gaming myths?

Back in the day before the internet, gamefaqs, and the other gaming sites, all of my information came from word of mouth and gaming magazines. In order to find glitches and codes, my friends and I would sit around for hours playing games and reading mags. The biggest gaming legend at the time was the mysterious "4th whistle" in SMB3.

I remember some kid at elementry school saying that he had it. We asked him to prove it and in typical elementry school fashion, he made up some bullshit story. We all went home trying to duplicate it but alas, it was all for naught. We eventually called him out on his bluff but we were all convinced that there was a 4th whistle.

Every fucking day after school, we would all try to find it. And we did everything. Glitched the game, used the P-Wing in every level, used the hammer suit every chance we got, used the hammer on the map at random areas. Nothing. Eventually we gave up but damn, trying to find that 4th whistle owned my soul.

Of course, being an avid SF gamer, the Shen Long trick pissed me off as well. It was impossible to do. When I found out it was fake...

Goldeneye with the 4 Bonds and Akuma in RE2. I remember seeing that in an EGM (I think it was EGM) and was freaking out. Akuma mutha fuckers. Akuma!

I can't even remember if I believed the Sheng Long trick or not...but I remember thinking it even SOUNDED impossible, and didn't appear to be worth the trouble.

Akuma in RE instantly jumped out as "fake!" to me. I didn't believe it for a second, because it made absolutely no sense. The pictures didn't even make sense.

Nimbus Terrafaux in MK1 also made no sense....so that was another one that jumped out as obviously fake to me....it was hilarious how random it was though...just some black guy in a gi, out of nowhere in the MK roster. Comedy.

-------word of mouth bullshit:
-People in my school and city had some asanine rumor that AL BUNDY was a secret character in MK3. "You've seriously got to be kidding with this..." --that was my thoughts on the issue.

-If you did something at a particular time...one of those trees with faces would eat your character.

-Guile could pull a gun out of his boot and use it. Other rumors involved Guile using a knife.

-My habitual liar of a former friend, "Dumbass"(aka The Worst Gamer of All Time")...claimed he could flip the Abobos in Double Dragon. Of course, this is impossible. I don't think there's even a frame of animation for an Abobo being in that headlock/hold position that occurs before a flip move. Anyway, "Dumbass" is the same guy that once claimed his SNES version of MK 2 started doing MK3 things, such as damage percentages and combo #s being shown....and I think he claimed Motaro showed up.

-I also remember the rumor of there being "Nudealities" in ...Ultimate MK3.
-Back to my ol pal "Dumbass"---he also claimed Goro did a fatality on him. Now, this was MK 1 he was referring to. I think Goro does get a fatality later on in the series, but he does NOT kill you in part 1. It never fucking happens. It's not even something that's programmed into the game. "Dumbass" claimed Goro picked him up, and tore his character's limbs off one by one. To further point out this guy's credibility, he also claimed to have all the systems, including Neo Geo Gold, a PC, SuperGrafx, etc. EVERYTHING....but of course...all of this was at his dad's house....and of course...his dad lived in another state. This is also the guy who claimed he lost his virginity at 10, despite the reality that he's incredibly afraid during all interaction with girls. I'm Billy Dee Fucking Williams by comparison. When you make me of all people appear all smooth and pimptight by comparison...that's just sad....but this is getting into another topic.

-Official shit: a ZIP drive for Dreamcast. Never happened. "Black & White" for Dreamcast. Never happened.

Way way WAY back in the day when Game FAQs was first established, there was a "Hidden Character FAQ' for Final fantasy 3; it eluded to characters like, Clyde, General Leo, Kefka, and even Satan were all unlockable characters. Of course we were all retards, and we believed SOME of them. The General leo revival trick sounded plausable, but others were obviously just constructed to waste massive amounts of time just to fuck with you. Anyone else remember this?

If Al Bundy was playable for real then I would of been a MK fan for life. I would be saying been MK>SF. Oh well going thing that didnt happen. I remember being told that you could unlock the Inferno match in Wrestlemania 2000 and the Lion's Den match in Smachdown. what bullshit that was.

Ha, I remember hearing about that as well.

WCW/nWo Revenge - Beating the game with Goldberg or Nash unlocks Austin and Taker.

SMW - Orange/Purple/Black/Gray/etc. colored Yoshi's. They would have different powers and whatnot.
- Being able to take Yoshi into the castles
- Racoon suit in SMW

Damn, as kids we believed some outrageous shit. I never made any of that ish up but I always got pissed at the people who did.

Way back when Pokemon first invaded the United States, there was an episode where a Ghastly was being disruptive. They confront it,and it makes some weird fusion Pokemon called Venasoise(A merger of Venasaur and Blastoise).

There were a bunch of false rumors going around that you could get this Pokemon in,in Pokemon Red or Blue. Some of my older friends tried to dupe me into paying 5 dollars to tell me how to get in Venasoise.I was young, but I wasn't stupid.5 dollars was like a million to me back then.

The MK1 nude code rumor is just so blatantly gay.

MK was notorious for random code rumors. the nimbus code was one, the cuss/curse code was another. Once MK2 rolled around on console, the fergality on mk2 genesis was hard to believe but it was a true one.

Getting back General Leo in FFVI and getting Aeris back in FFVII. When I was younger I pursued the General Leo rumor relentlessly. I was convinced it had something to do with beating Chupon at the Colosseum. And of course, you needed the mythical Rose of Life and to go to his grave or something and you could bring him back to life.

I believed that the Guile's handcuffs in WW were as real as the Tomb Raider nude code, until I saw it happen with my own eyes. Got free entry to a movie theater cause my friend could do it.

Guile's gun (to do it, you were supposed to get 10 rounds draw vs Chun Li, and on the 11th round, you have the gun)

Chun Li's bracelets

Ryu takes out nunchucks (to do it, you're supposed to do a Hurricane kick immediately after a red fireball, in SF2)

Throwing the rock in Sagat's and Chun Li's stage

Blanka's electric rolling attack in SF2

Honda jumping into the bath on his stage

Of course, all these rumors didn't help that Guile had soo many bugs that you didn't know what to believe back then

Hyper Tails in Sonic 3 and Knuckles.

You get Super(which takes all 14 emeralds anyways) but no hyper. He had the most broke form anyways with all the birds flying around.

Also,it's not so much an gaming urban legend, but i airdashed in a LAN Co-op game of Gears of War the other day.

i was climbing out of the fountain on 'Fish in a Barrel' when Fenix stepped on the surface like usual, but instead of just stepping over,he propelled himself forward toward the granite block area on the left of the map(which anyone that has played it can say it's a bit of a distance far.)

But GoW is glitchy anyways, with inescapable chainsaw attacks and the like.

Just wondering , for you SMW experts, in the lost forest, i think right when you get in, there is a trail you walk threw, and in that, you know there is a hidden level because the trail seriously leads to nowhere! its just a circle you go into and takes you to the bottom - Top of the map, but you pass a circle in the middle, where a level should be, but isnt there. WTF? anyone have the slightest clue what im talking about? go pop in SMW and go there and you'll see what i mean.

For SF2 SNES? I remember that shit, even bought the pro action replay thing to get them, and all it did was give you their sprites, though discolored, with someone elses moves. Would always freeze up after a bit anyway.

I did get all moves in air with that device, made it like the bootleg versions. Man those were fun times now that I think about it.

Yeah, I had Game Genie specifically for the SF2 codes. At first there was the boss code, which was bullshitty....the sprites were always messed up, and the game would freeze after using them for awhile. The "Crazy Edition!" codes were the real deal though. It got to a point where I didn't want to play unless we had air moves and the super fast/super slow projectile codes. It was SF2: Crazy Edition finally brought home....well, a watered down version at least. (the real "Crazy" SF2 still had diagonal flight-path projectiles, mid-round character changes, and zig-zag flight-path projectiles) Really, who could go back to "regular" SF2 after that?

I think my ol friend "Dumbass" also mentioned there was a way to play as Willy(that cheap ass bastard with the machine gun near the end of the game) in Double Dragon. Yeah, sure.

The MK series had so many freaky rumors...

-Ermac, although I actually read in an interview with Boon (or Tobias? can't remember) that he actually DOES exist; he's a palette swap of one of the ninjas that happens when an error is thrown in the game code. His name supposedly stands for ERror MACro.

- Lots of shit with some character named Pantera, that would appear if you did the Cage fatality glitch with his shadow kick in one specific level, on the right side of the screen; the shadow kick would kick your opponent through the door and you'd fight this Pantera dude on the other side.

- Play as Reptile! There are a few glitches which make this look and sound believable, such as the palette glitch when fighting Reptile; if you're fighting Reptile and another player joins, highlighting a ninja shows them with a screwed color palette; it's usually green. Reptile rumors galore!

- Shang Tsung's fatality. Reportedly, Shang Tsung had a fatality, and we were actually able to trigger a different animation for Shang Tsung that made the game crash; with Scorpion, you need to teleport a bunch of times in rapid succession and Tsung will actually come rushing at you with his fist in the air; if he touches you, bang, the game crashes. :) People were saying that they saw him chop your head off with his sword..

MK1 was so fucking glitchy, I guess it was normal to have such wild rumors. I can still do most of the glitches we had; I should make a vid sometime. Freezing Goro, passing through Shang Tsung's fireballs, rounds fucking up, etc.

I fell for the Sheng Long code. I fell for numerous MK codes and lies that a friend of mine made up. I fell for the Akuma in RE2 code. Heck, I went out and bought RE2 even though I had beaten it a million times cuz' I was hyped. The pictures looked so real ><. Ermac was a consol glitch costume. From what i know it usually happens on scorpion but since you say he appeared in the graveyard like reptile then the costume glitched may have also happened on reptile.

thankfully some fat friend of my brothers cloned me his mew, but he taught it hm's like fly and cut. FLY AND CUT!

 For some reason that just made me crack up, probably because thats what happened to me. Damn HMs....

I heard some huge BS from a friend of mine. We went to one of those big Pokemon tournaments sanctioned by Nintendo in a shopping mall. He and I entered the Gameboy game tournament.

This was back when Red and Blue were the only versions out. When we saw each other next after the tournament, he claims he fought a player who had the special 'Pikablue' and that it had a special move called 'TombStoner' and if the attack hit you, it killed your pokemon permanently. Obviously, the attack missed him...

Of course I didn't believe him, he's always lying about stuff

Know what I hate? Codes on Gamefaqs that don't fucking work!

Yeah, one of the ways was to get it from Nintendo themselves, it was during the North American premiere of that first Pokemon movie where they would give it out.
Actually, there is a way to get a Mew without any extra devices what so ever. Just the game, and nothing more. And whats more tripped out is you get Mew himself, not a glitched up version or anything. You can aviod MissingNo by doing the trick as well.

How do you do it?
http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=907714&topic=20890607

Check that out and tells you how to do the Mew trick/glitch.
It's kind of interesting how someone could possibly figure it out. But at the sametime, it looked like whoever did the glitch actually programmed it in there so they can get Mew or whatever...

Bleh, I dunno.

Pikablue and the retarded ammount of fake pokemon accompanied with screenshots that were spread on the net.

I remember that. I remember reading some rumor online that basically said you had to talk to the guard outside of Saffron City like 1500 times then fly home and you would find out that your mother is dead and be forced to fight her spirit or some shit like that. THEN Pikablue would appear. I want to kick whoever wrote that in the nuts because I sat there and talked to the fucking guy 1500 times only to find out it was a bullshit rumor. :bluu:

I remember hearing about Mario being able to jump over the flag in SMB. Think I actually tried to do it, too. Also, some told me you could get 8000 points at the flagpole somehow. Man, what a load that was.

The biggest load I heard and fell for was in Super Mario 64. Someone printed out some crap about Toad and Peach being playable characters. I don't remember all the nonsense I went through, but had me catching the bunny and then trying to get him through one of the doors, the one where you jump through a pool to go into one of the courses. I think I spent hours trying to do that mess. That was some S class bull crap right there. I was such a freaking idiot back 1997.

Honda jumping into the bath on his stage

http://www.pokemonelite2000.com/rbcatchmew.html

I call bullshit on this until video proof.

As for the Aries thing. She was never supposed to be revived, in any version. The reason she died was cause one of the developers' mothers died during production, and he did that as an homage to her. IIRC

Back in Super Mario 64 there was a rumor if you ran around the fountain in the first area wehre you havea ghost level you could play as Luigi. It was either run around it 50 times or 100 times, but they had to be perfect circles

Then there was the 121 star where you had to do crazy shit to get it, then you got to ride yoshi.

Then with Pokemon red/blue there were god monster rumors that if you talked to the girl ontop of the giant shopping center about 200 times and gave her a drink each time she would tell you to leave her alone, then bust out a god creature.

Still in Pokemon R/B, there was HM06, which you can get with a gameshark, that let you hop over solid walls. And supposedly the fields on both sides of the begining town had the starter pokemon in them. So you had to jump over and random battle, but each time you jumped over, if you took one step in any direction the game glitched.

You're the first person that's noticed. It's a great fucking song. I never knew what the guy said after "i told you what to expect" but it always sounded like " in these times with these feelings". I can't find any where on the net that has the actual lyrics for that part.

Chocolate Factory? lol never heard of it...

SMB Mini Fire Mario!:

This also WAS true by having regular fire mario strike koopa at the same time falling on the axe at the first castle - sending koopa in the lava. If you did it right mario becomes glitchy and you have to do something on the following stage to make it work.

The timing is insane and difficult to pull off. I had spent so many hours trying to do this I thought of it to be a rumor.

you don't... i fell for it
DOn't even get me started about the mew shit and the ss anne. i almost failed a grade because i was too busy tryign to do that shit. Then isaid fuck it and got a game genie.
There was this glitch that me and a freidn did in SSB:M... It was in fox's stage, i was playign as ness and he was playing as yoshi. We were hittign each othwr right about the area of the lower guns, we both did an attack at the same time and i landed on the lowere guns. i literally went through the level. It was F'ed up. we tried to replicate it but it could never happen.... lame.
Another one was that got spread around my school was that in SF3, Remy had an ending where if you Perfect'd every character, even Q that you would see an alternate ending where Remy finally sees his father adn it is guile. This was right when we got a port for it at our local arcade in 2003 i think and i did it and nothing happene. wasted my damn quarters....

Nope. It wasnt a real code. Someone figured out how to make other characters look like the other bonds with gameshark or something but it definitely was not a real code. And yeah, it was hard as balls. EGM never makes their fake code accomplishments easy.

Quoted from wikipedia:
1998

"All Bonds" cheat in GoldenEye 007. The cheat was said to be able to unlock three of the actors who played James Bond (Sean Connery, Roger Moore and Timothy Dalton) as playable multiplayer characters.

The joke stems from an rumored statement that Rare made where you could play as those Bonds but couldn't get licenses to get their faces. However, their faces are still in the game's code. This feature later turned out to be true, but one required a GameShark to unlock it.
