I am a beginner as well. The recommendations people have gave me is to start out with Ken because he can dish out alot of damage and he has good defense.

Start out with high tier characters so you can get a feel for the game. You don't want to handicap yourself from the start by choosing a character with many weaknesses.

Ken is definately a good starter character. Chun-li and Ryu are good choices too.

Remember, take it slow. DO NOT CARE ABOUT WIN LOSSES ON LIVE!! It doesn't matter. Some of the best players on Live are rank B or A. The S or SS or sometimes just punks who drop (they disconnect or leave the game before the lose so it doesn't record the loss) or people who pick on the unskilled players so pad their score. The best way to learn honestly, play OFFLINE for a bit and learn the basics. Then go online and just use it as practice. Use the people as practice dummies. Who cares if they get all pissy. After a while, you'll be more skilled than most of them will ever be and they won't play you regardless. Most of the good players are real nice to people who are honestly willing to learn. SOme will actually help you train you on stuff.

Just be nice, play for fun and learn before you talk. Then when you have some game, talk a bit but be fun about it. No one likes a jerk.

Err, for total noobs to the game, might I suggest you practice 1-2-3 (Jump-in Fierce or Roundhouse - Standing whatever - Special Move) then once you can do 1-2-3s start working on 4s (1-2-3 + Super)

The idea is to develop your poke locks (to give pressure to your opponents) and punish them (to the max amount of damage) when they mess up. This is where practicing 1-2-3s help since most scrubs punish with throws or a single special. After you have the basics down, go practice Karas and/or technical (flashy) combos. Mindgames come with experience.
