Every country in the world is building up. Dubai is owning everyone but most of their stuff is tacky.

Good find Zulu =). Man, that Buri Dubai is going to look so fucking sick after it's done, my God. I wished they built a tall ass one here in Downtown L.A. (like a 1,800+ ft building), but I doubt that would ever happend due to our damn earthquake region. So I guess we're stuck w/ the Library Tower for now.

Yeah I like skyscrappers as well. They're just really cool to look at and witness first hand. I remember when I first saw the World Trade Center in NY, looked up and said "wow...I'm feeling dizzy". A city is boring without any skyscrappers. These buildings are gonna take a couple more years to make. I don't mind the Dubai & Kuwait ones. Lol London's so boring.

I'm an architecture fan as well and Dubai looks really impressive, I have to visit there someday soon.

To add to the list, there's another antenna tower planned for Tokyo that'll be even taller than the city's Eiffel Tower ripoff:

A bit o history:

LA had a 13 story height limit for all of it's buildings until 1953 due to earthquakes and stuff. Except for City Hall which is 34 stories. But that ban was lifted.

There was actually 2 really tall towers proposed for LA. One was the 9th and Figueroa Tower (1,300 feet tall) and the LA Megastructure (2,100) which was to rise on the Ambassador Hotel site in Mid-Wilshire. Donald Trump backed it up but the school board fought and won. If it was built, you could see it from the Valley.

Oh yeah, those man made islands... I envision them breaking apart and sinking into the ocean for some reason.

Wtf is that... thing in chicago?? It looks like a giant drill bit.

I'm liking the new WTC.

The Dubai scraper looks like something out of star trek. Pretty impressive.

Screw that. Start putting laser cannons on them so they can shoot down planes, then have little ones to charge kids a quarter to blast birds outta the sky

Big news regarding the Chicago Spire (for those who care)

Calatrava tower to drop spire

Dec. 06, 2006
By Eddie Baeb and Alby Gallun

The Chicago Spire is losing its point.

The developer of the proposed Streeterville tower that would be North America's tallest skyscraper on Friday plans to file design changes with the city eliminating the 430-foot antenna that tops the twisting design by renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava.

Instead, condominium units in the building are to rise all the way to the top at 2,000 feet, says Thomas Murphy, a Chicago attorney and spokesman for the project’s developer, Garrett Kelleher of Dublin, Ireland-based Shelbourne Development Ltd.

“The silhouette will be the same, but there won’t be a spire on top,” Mr. Murphy says. “It’s good for the neighborhood, the city and the building. It makes it a sensible, rational scheme.”

The changes, which Mr. Calatrava presented to neighbors earlier this week, would allow for 1,000 condominiums, up from the current plan that calls for 300 units and a 20-story hotel, according to people briefed on the plans. The building also would move slightly north, farther away from the river, and the pedestal-shaped base would be eliminated and replaced with underground parking.

“There are many positive features and we are in the process of reviewing it,” says Gail Spreen, vice-president of the influential neighborhood group the Streeterville Organization of Active Residents, which has yet to take a formal position on the changes.

Ms. Spreen, whose group was shown the plans Tuesday night, says she likes the developer’s plan to build an underground parking garage and include a large plaza along the river. She declines to comment on the new design of the building.

Sources say the developer also told neighbors that its financing was lined up, meaning they can begin construction without pre-selling condos, and that Shelbourne didn’t think a hotel would succeed at the 400 N. Lakeshore Drive location, so far from Michigan Avenue.

Mr. Murphy wouldn’t comment on financing, the hotel or how the unit makeup will change with the new designs. He says groundbreaking is planned for the second quarter of next year.

“The building is going forward, there’s no question about that,” Mr. Murphy says. Some observers may question Shelbourne's decision to add condos to the project amid a sluggish downtown condo market. Sales of downtown condos fell 7.6% in the first nine months of the year vs. the same period in 2005, according to Chicago-based consulting firm Appraisal Research Counselors.

Yet condo developers aren't slowing down: They have started marketing 6,100 units this year, eclipsing the 4,700 they put on the market for all of 2005, according to Appraisal Research.

Chicago developer Christopher Carley first proposed the skyscraper in July 2005. Yet Mr. Carley was unable to secure a loan to buy the 2.2-acre development site, so Shelbourne stepped in last July and bought it for about $64 million.

Fucking sweet design idea, although they should have kept the antenna on top to make the building officially broken.

I would NOT want to live in a condo 2000 ft in the air, especially in Chicago. Nothing would please me more than having sub zero winds blowing 80 miles an hour against my windows. bleh.

Fuck that shit. I went to the Twin Towers in April 2001. I will never forget. It was crystal clear, cool, but windy as fuck. The building swayed 6 feet in the wind and 6 feet back. Scared the hell out of me.

And there is noplace in the world that does tacky better than Dubai. Granted, most of the towers look like something out of a Sci-Fi movie (http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/6278/ny2004887qv.jpg, overall it's very tacky. Building something like a sundial on top of a 30 story building, or a ugly 1,000 foot tall rail thin tower that looks like Big Ben is just really pointless. Who is going to use the sundial?

O deng..Vegas is getting into the swing of things:

Haha. Yeah I've been to New York, Florida, and New Orleans [Pre-Katrina, We got to play pre-game and halftime in the fucking Sugar Bowl. LSU vs OU], and China with my High School Marching Band.

Oh. And Skyscrapers. Right. Uh, I went to the top of the Empire State building in New York. Took pictures. Tried to throw a penny off the top. Landed on the next tier below.
