hey srk, ive been coming to these forums for almost 6 years now, and this is the only time im asking for some help.

i have a huge procrastination problem. I have a term project due in 2 days, and a paper due tomorow.

im halfway on the term project, havent started the paper, so i expect to be up all night, but i keep leaning away from the project. its like i cant keep attention to it, and i minimize it for "one minute" to go get a drink, check my email, myspace, whatever. then that minute turns into an hour, and im like fucking shit, what the hell did i just do?

I really need some tips on how to not be this way with my school work, my grades have been so good but now i feel they are going to start going in the shitter.

I have similar problems with procrastination, but over the years I've learned that I can solve it by consulting this article:

http://webhome.idirect.com/~readon/procrast.html

Too bad I haven't gotten around actually reading it.

You sound like me :wasted:

You have to get in the state of mind: work now, play later. Get all your shit done asap, then the rest of the time you have completely to yourself to spend it however you want, without worrying about said papers that are soon due.

Or, you could split up work/play. Work on your paper/homework/whatever for an hour or two, then take an hour or two to yourself to play some games, go for a coffee, look at sluts on myspace, etc. Then go back to your work, and so on. Just make sure you split up the time in a manner where you'll get your work done in time. Give that a try.

It's really a mentaility problem because just thinking about the workload and toughness is enough pain to put it away until later. Once you start doing the work, it's not that bad and you'll be kicking yourself for not starting earlier.

I go through this cycle on everything I do.

Shit. I have a part of a project, 7 hours worth of math homework, and learning 3 chapters of chemistry left to do in 2 days. I was planning to finish all of this over Thanksgiving break and yet I'm here typing this stuff up. Pathetic...

I'm chipping away my precious time by playing these stupid flash games too.

This is sooo weird.

I am almost in the exact same position as you right now, Strider. And the scary part is - I have been putting off all my work to play Strider all day!

Uhhh... who DOESN'T procrastinate? Pretty much 99.99% of students all procrastinate and do their paper on Sunday night at 2AM (which is officially Monday).

Wanna stop procrastinating? Stop reading SRK and do your work.

ok seriously now, though. Usually going somewhere to work with no internet will help keep you on task on your comp. Pull the ethernet plug out your comp and make sure you dont have anything entertaining around you. Suddenly your boring ass paper by default is the most interesting thing you have (nothing else is available).

If not working on a comp i recommend going to a library with nothing but the books your working on. Same principle, dont even give yourself the option of doing something else. If you end up daydreaming a bit, your diversions will still take up less time then if your on a comp.

Another thing that helps, set small goals and take breaks once you achieve them. EX: You will write one paper, then get up get a drink of water, walk around 5 min then write another page. Small manageable goals will keep you moving forward.

Good luck, I deal with this shit everyday so try to stay strong.

I procrastinate a lot, but people think I'm on the ball. How do I do that? Well when I know I'm not doing something I know needs to be done, I project positiveness on people around me for things that needs to be done as a group. Like cleaning the house with roommates and stuff. With that positive energy, it gets the motivational juices flowing for my own personal goals that needs to be accomplished.

It depends on the person you are.

Some people when the odds are agaisnt them they try even harder

Some people when the odds are against them they do the opposite, and dont even try at all and do something to get around the "loss."

Maybe realizing that you aren't the only one who goes through that, might make it feel better for you. If I feel like Im the only one donig something that I perceive is negative it feels much worse. When I realize everyone else makes that mistake it doesnt "hurt" as much. Some people hate that other people do it, some people use it.

You're probably like me.

True that. Im a trickster and breakdancer. Ive been so for so long it gets hard to motivate yourself and you dont see the great need to compete sometimes (i.e. there is no fire under my butt.) I notice when I go out, do great with a girl, see any kind of inspirational movie, I just tend to do the things I need to be doing. But if I procrastinate inside the house, it tends to just get depressive and I procrastinate even more.

I have a procrastination problem, but sometimes I have to wonder if it truly is a problem. Procrastination must be natures way to keep some last shred of humanity within people because I don't think we are suppose to be living the way we do.

The article was good, but half way through it i died out...you see? =(

Haha, i stopped around where it started talking about solving procrastination.

I think this is true of many procrastinators, but for me, anytime I procrastinate on a project or something, I tend to get it done in just the few hours I leave for myself before it is due. The way I see it, I didn't spend any extra time working on it because I got it done on time, and not a moment sooner or later, so I have never felt the need to change.

It's all a state of interest you've got to get interested back in your school work inorder to stop until then your stuck in the whole like the rest of us. without your normal inforcer most times your parents or incentive (money/games) were all basically fucked.
