Listen -- you are never too old to do anything... HOWEVER

if you do not have a passion for it.. you will discontinue playing after a while..
I happen to be in love with music, and I have a natural talent for picking up one and playing it.. be it a piano, trumpet, violin, etc.. (those are the main other three I play). But you gotta ask yourself, "Do I have the passion?" It helps if you love music too.. and hopefully your reason for picking up the guitar is not just to "learn to play some songs" or whatever.. you learn so you can play your own music. I guess initially it is ok to have that whole "i wanna learn to play this and that".. a lot of people change mind sets from that one.. If you know you are set to just play songs and have fun, then it will be your hobby.. sounds to me like you really want to play though.

If you mean professionally, then it's to late. That is unless your a prodigy of some sort.

Assuming you're serious..

Just start playing it. Don't learn music or how to read, or scales or anything like that. Learn how to use tabs and start with Mary Had A Little Lamb. Learn to play it and then go on to something else until you can copy your favorite pop music riff, solo or whatever and pretty soon you'll get bored and start to write your own licks and probably end up learning music anyway, just so you can communicate with non-guitar instruments. If you get that far. This is the story most guitarists I have played with tell me about how they started.

Both of them are very musically logical instruments. I'm also learning piano, and I have come to appreciate the simplicity of it when I'm trying to write a piece, but also frustrate myself when I have to play something even mildly complicated. It's a hard instrument, even if the concept behind it really simple.

Guitar, I really can't say since I just have an acoustic that I mess around on. I only recently learned how to bridge a chord, and let's just say that I can do it once and if I move my finger the slightest bit I loose it and have to stop everything and set them back in place again. It's the hardest instrument I've ever considered picking up and I've played Alto, Tenor & Baritone saxophone, Cymbals, Alto & Bass Clarinet, a Yamaha EWI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EWI), even dabbled a bit with learning the Trumpet, and now am learning piano (keyboards) for composing and very little guitar. Guitar is hard to me, but your mileage may vary.

I just picked up electric guitar a month ago and I have to tell you, the carpel tunnel comes strong and fast!

I'm 22 by the way...

It's really difficult, but I am having lots of fun whenever I get to play =D

I'm not even going to think about my skill level projection...just play.

its never too late and 25 is definitely not too young. i dont know how good you plan to get because rock guitar can take you like a year, but spanish guitar could take you a decade (although I assume you want to play rock). I started pretty late, but if you have the drive its worth it.

lemmy from motorhead didn't start the band until he was 30 years old and now they are metal legends. you could probably be good enough to play any motorhead song in like a year too!

Just start practicing, work out with the bowflex a little bit, and before you know it, you'll be 49, in the best shape of your life, and playing in a rock band.

My father didn't learn to play the guitar until he was in his mid 30's, so it's never too late. He's a damn good guitarist too.

I think it comes down to two things:

Dedication: One of the advantages of learning an instrument when you're younger is that parents are usually pushing you to stick with it. You also have a lot more spare time on your hands so you can devote your excess time to practice.

Young Brain = Sponge. Old Brain = Wall: This is definitely the bigger issue of the two. Young people assimilate information and adaptations far better than adults. You'll probably find it extraordinarily frustrating at first because your brain will have to tell your fingers how to play the new instrument. Get ready for cramps in your fingers from curving them differently as well.

Good luck...

It took me about two years, self taught, on and off playing to get really comfortable. It helps if you've played another instrument, I've played the piano for around 7 years.

Not if it's the electric air triangle

I'm self-learning partly because I am not dedicated enough to take lessons from someone seeing as I have a school schedule to keep up with.

But I am dedicated enough to play whenever I have free time so it's not like I have no interest.

A lesson book will definately help though...I have never played an instrument before so I really needed something to start with at least.

You know...the whole training my ears and knowing how to read sheet music.

Just don't be a hero and go "oh yeah, I don't need anyone or any materials. I'm just going to wail it out until it makes sense to me"

The best advice I can give is to avoid overspending.

To be honest, it depends on the person. I would take a few lessons and see if its for you. You might need a couple lessons to get yourself started and be able to take it from there on your own, or you may need someone to guide you for a year or two. Most rock guitarists self teach themselves. You don't need to know how to read music, just learn how to read tabs, and have your favorite cd's handy, and you pretty much have all you need. Its good to at least have a friend that plays because trying to learn certain techniques like harmonics are more difficult without seeing how they are done.

Also something to consider is the way a teacher will teach you. Some instructors will have a curriculum, while some private teachers will just teach you what you are interested in learning, which is pretty cool in my opinion.

In any case, pursue the path that keeps you wanting to play. Some people can't play unless they have lessons that force them to practice, and some people prefer to just practice on their own. There is no general answer. Hope that helps

He pretty much hit it on the head. I took lessons for a good while until I felt comfortable on my own because I would do nothing but noodle around unless I had some "homework" that HAD to be done(otherwise I would be wasting my money).

Im 25 and Im starting to learn guitar

Its never too late for anything!

I once sold a guitar and starter DVD to a 42 year old guy, and I encouraged him that its never too late.

People told me that Im still too old to dress punk or metal, but thats just their opinions. I know people in their 40's still doing it and having lots of fun.

So, again you are never too old for anything:tup:
