The Ultimate Sidescrolling (Classic) Mario?

In your opinion, what is the ultimate Mario Game?, there have been many, and quite a few spin-offs.....what I'm asking isn't the ultimate Mario Game, but rather, the ultimate Sidescrolling Mario Platformer.......

it can be on any system, and doesn't even need to star Mario! (All the Sidescrolling Wario games are eligible), I just want opinions on what's considered the best.....

and while you're welcome to share what your all-time favorite (overall) Mario Game is, I'm really only looking for the ultimate Sidescrolling Mario Platformer.....

Blame Ben Savage for 3. I know I do.

Land 1 is inferior to Land 2, which is Mario World minus Yoshi. It uses the same gameplay, but tweaks it with a miniature style. It's all on one island, but different zones. Beat a zone, you can go back to it regardless. If anything, it feels like it's the in-between for Mario 3 and Mario World. Mario retains his original moves, but inherits some of World's stuff, such as the spin shot.

You'll love the Space level. It's Mario Galaxy before Mario Galaxy!:wgrin:

I never got to play SMLand 2....the graphics on part 1 were pitifully small though...at least it wasn't as bad as Batman though...that was another 1st gen Gameboy game, where Bats was really just the size of a couple of dots out of the "dot matrix" on the screen. If a gnat landed on your gameboy screen back then, it would probably be larger and actually obscure your view of Batman.

Anyway, of course SMB3 wins. World was alright, but it just didn't have the same overall "magic" for me that part 3 had. World, and the other games...just weren't as memorable, at least in my opinion. Yeah, it had superior graphics and sound, but that was about it. Super Mario Bros. 3 goes beyond just the Mario games category; I still consider it to be just one of the best games ever made. Anytime someone makes a top 10 or top 20 or top whatever list of greatest games ever, Super Mario Bros. 3 should be somewhere on there. This is a game that some of us still play even now in 2006.(I have my smb3 fix now on GBAsp. I've beaten the game perfectly, but I still come back every now and then.)

Come on now...Mario 3 gave us the HAMMER BROS. SUIT.....and the Kuribo's Shoe. That right there immediately granted it Legendary status.

well, it's not that I'm discounting 3 for any other reason than it's the clear winner......so, really, I guess I'm looking for #2.......

I loved SMW, but it was a lot of flash and dazzle.......just kinda showing off the 16-bit graphics a bit......

now, while everybody cites the Hammer Bros. suit as awesome, I just never saw the appeal.......the TANOOKI suit, on the other hand, was dead useful......

the HB Suit was just too damn hard to get when I first started playing (being an advanced level suit), and while I'm much better now, it still seems like too much hassle for the effect you're granted.......

First off are u fucking kidding? yeah i loved smb2 it was a great game but compared to 1 n 3 it was shit and the level designs/enemies didn't fit the mario theme AT ALL do u know why? cuz it was originally supposed to be some other japenese game but they wanted to make mario2 fast so they picked this weird game n stuck mario in it n called it mario2...That bird face that eats u at the end of every level n u later on fight was the scariest shit i have ever seen it gave me countless nightmares freddy ain't got shit on that bird:shake:

the HB Suit was just too damn hard to get when I first started playing (being an advanced level suit), and while I'm much better now, it still seems like too much hassle for the effect you're granted.......Hammer Suit is better because it destroys everything. Hammers can kill everything that Fire Power can, plus Boo Buddies, Thwomps, the little walking flames, and just about everything else in the game, including Bowser. Plus ducking makes you invulnerable to fireballs.

Don't get me wrong here, Raccoon Suit is hella tight too. You can even turn into a statue in mid-air and fall on enemies to kill them, and this also includes Thwomps and Boo Buddies. But it is a riskier and harder to control method of eliminating those enemies, and not even always viable, such as places where they are over spikes or pits.

HB suit is hard to get, 'cause is too damm broken.. It can kill TONS of stuff that i thought were invencible, as Remy Saotome said.

Plus Mario looks WAY cool in that suit. :looney:

Like most have already said, Super Mario Bros. 3. Game clicks in all categories. Level design, challenge, music, power-ups, everything. We may never see the Hammer Bros. Suit or Kuribo's Shoe in a Mario game ever again because they are too effing broken. We only got Kuribo's Shoe for ONE level.

While I enjoy the GBA and All-Stars version of SMB3 very much, the NES version is still the best, IMO. Doom Ship theme is top tier. Anyone ever get through that one castle in world 8 with like a million doors? I had to use a guide to pass that one.

I know that the Hammer suit can kill...well...EVERYTHING, but purple Yoshi could fly through any level with the exception of ghost houses, water levels and cave levels.
