An update on G4 stated that it was actually the pet ferret that gnawed off the toes.

I would love for the parent's punishment to be that their four toes get gnawed off by a ferret, with help in the next room asleep.

Just to clear things up, pit bulls are actually very people-friendly dogs. The problem is, people breed pit bulls for mental instability and human-aggressiveness, as guard dogs. This is HIGHLY unnatural behaviour in pit bulls, and it is not uncommon to find pit bulls that are extremely friendly towards humans and won't hurt anyone. They are naturally very aggressive towards other dogs, though, so be careful with that if you ever get one.
A good friend of mine is a dog expert, and she knows of a few pit bull breeders she'd trust to give her a dog that would be just fine around little kids. Personally, though, I still like newfie retrievers. Must cuter and more cuddly, IMO. :)
