TOKYO - Momofuku Ando, the Japanese inventor of instant noodles — a dish that has sustained American college students for decades — has died. He was 96.
Nissin Food Products Co., the company Ando founded, said on its Web site that he died Friday after suffering a heart attack.
Born in Taiwan, Ando founded his company in 1948 from a humble family operation. Faced with food shortages in post-World War II Japan, Ando thought a quality, convenient noodle product would help feed the masses.
In 1958, his "Chicken Ramen" — the first instant noodle — was introduced after many trials. Following its success, the company added other products, such as the "Cup Noodle" in 1971.
"The Momofuku Ando Instant Ramen Museum" opened in 1999 in Ikeda City in western Japan commemorating his inventions.
Ando gave a speech at the company's New Year ceremony and enjoyed Chicken Ramen for lunch with Nissin employees on Thursday before falling ill, Japan's largest daily Yomiuri reported.
He is survived by his wife, Masako.RIP. Ramen noodles got me through many days. I'm going to cook up some shrimp Ramen in honor.

Christ. I didn't even know the man existed and he was a god to me.
God Bless you, Momofuku Ando. May you R.I.P., knowing that I will individually guarentee that, as long as I live, your life's creation will still be gulped down with joy.
GGPO, Ando.

Instant noodles are that young? I though people where drying them out for boiling longer than that. If it's just the microwave cups though, I understand.

This man is a true hero, though I wonder how many of his 96 years he lived subsisting solely on ramen. Hopefully none, as eating nothing but ramen after a while puts you in a near zombie like state.
<------ Favorite flavor - spicy chicken.

Geez, man, RIP Momofuku Ando. Your invention, as well as your name, is epic. May Valhalla welcome you with open arms.
This is a strange situation. I am mourning a man to whom I practically owe my life and yet never knew existed. Kinda worries me though, cause if the guys who invented Tostino's pizzas and Dr. Thunder croak too, I'll probably starve to death.

I once bought a bunch of ramen at cosco. I think if you broke it down individually I was basically able to eat meals for like a couple cents a meal (6 cents?). No one can even touch this. RIP and respect, a man among men.

What a horrible way to start the new year.
I say all of us college students coalesce and petition for "National Noodles Day" to commemorate the man who single-handedly saved millions of young paupers from starvation.
This for my homie Ando-san. *Pours a cup o' noodle on the ground*

Gotta pay my respects. R.I.P.
ProTip: Ramen tastes better if you boil the noodles first, drain most of the water, then add the powder.
This is just as Nostradamus predicted.
“After there is great trouble among mankind, a greater one is prepared. The great mover of the universe will renew time, rain, blood, thirst, famine, steel weapons and disease. In the heavens, a fire seen. A fire in various flavors of spicy chicken and shrimp; a fire that is insanely affordable and without flaw. Upon the great mover's death, the end is near and the mysteries of the apocalypse are revealed.”
Damn, RIP Ando-San the Ramen Man aka "the mover of the universe". I shall enjoy some ramen in memory of you and your great deed to mankind.

I'm going the get hung for this but, it's fairly unhealthy for you unless you add things to it. Ramen it's over rated, there are healtier tastier alternatives.Ramen it's okay once in a while but don't live off it. Even if you are dirt ass poor if you shop smart you can eat better than that.
Edit: You can buy good expensive brands but then price point is invalid.

This development just bakes my noodle.. it's instantly become the saddest bit o' news I've come across all week.
Honestly, I was just heading to the grocery store to stock up on ramen. I never use the sodium-loaded flavor packets though.. I usually boil and strain the noodles and mix them in with chicken and vegetables or whatever. There's no telling if Ando being a fan of the chicken-flavored ramen noodles for years had anything to with him dying of heart failure.

Atleast he lived a long life.
He can rest in peace knowing he helped alot of semi-poor - poor people out there. We ate that alot growing up. It was soooo good on TOP of being cheap.
If I had some around, I would eat some. I'll pick some up tomorrow cuz I have been craving them.
Btw, 25 cents a pack here.

I'm just citing the irony of his fate than suggesting that his invention was the cause of it. Like the inventor of cigarettes dying of emphysema or something.
