That said the performance his group gave was great because not only of the beat but the harmony behind it. Someone in that group definitely had music lessons to arrange that.

It seems to me that they have really efforted not to blow stories up huge this year in order to avoid the backlash associated with VFTW. They only showed a few vignettes and the longest of them (bailey feeding horses and whatnot) didn't get thru. She would have ben primo target numero uno for VFTW due to the cuteness and tons of background stories.

America has repeatedly proven that charisma (Hicks, Taylor) and good looks (Pickler, Kelly with some charisma) are golden. Well its live music time this week and that means the return of yours truly as a recapper. Tonite its the 12 men and we will lose the bottom two. This year is different than all of the past years in that the producers have obviously attempted to limit exposure of the contestants preventing the forming of early opinions so we basically have a blank slate. On to the music and the inevitable butchery.

Randy begins the show by standing up for his increasingly "real" ratings of the auditioners cliaming he is "keeping it real". And he does keep it real. It never ceases to amaze me that we have come to a point in our culuture where no one can suck at anything. To all the bad contestants, your delusional and you suck at life, kthnxbye.
Also of note is that Randy is rocking one of the ugliest paisley shirts I have ever seen, it looks like puke and chocolate ice cream put in a mixer.

Seacrest is wearing jeans and some grey vest/shirt combo that screams "I wanna go with the Killers/Panic look but don't have the balls so heres a muted attempt". I have to admit it is sharp though.

I would note here that I type this as I watch teh show and my opinions are pre-judges input.

ON to the music, we get Rudy doing "Free Ride" a seventies free love anthem, which he proceeds to take all of the rock out of and sing decently at best. In particular his attempt at a bridge is disjointed and basically crappy. WTF kinda shirt is that under the grey jacket? Not a good look. This dude puts me to sleep and not in the "Just banged Scarlett Johanssen and I can die happy" way but the "studying for finals at 5am" kinda vibe. The judges say he is derivative and unoriginal and I agree. 4.5/10 to start the show, bumped up to the final score of 5 due to going first on the season.

I don't recap mindless blathering so no backstage action.
Nexxt we have a real talent, lifetime backup singer Brandon Rogers. He is rocking the oh so trendy and lame hole ridden 500$ jeans, and singing michael Jackson "Rock with You". His voice is a a bit reminiscent of JoJo (not the jail bait teen pop star but of Jodeci), and I take it back, he is sucking here. Nice big note and a little half ass dancing, and I dig the shoes and belt buckle ensemble here. Not good, not great. BLEH. I put it as a little more entertaining than Rudy musically. 5/10 and maybe a hair over.

On to Sundance Head and his OUTRAGEOUS CHEST HAIR OF DOOM. Complete with WHITE TRASH MEDALLION to complete the look. He sings MOODY BLUES???? Oh dear god. Nice suit/t-shirt though to hide his epic chest hair, gay men throughout America pull the plug on voting for their favorite bear. He procedes to sing (sense a theme here) pretty poorly. THis guy couldn't find a note with a GPS system. His enunciation is also off, the way he says "you" annoys me. I think this guy is talented, but he is going to be very key and style dependant. This was the worst so far, and "Nights in white satin" isn't going to set the voting demographic running to the phone. We have our first ELIMINATION CANDIDTATE ladies and germs. 4.5/10 and thats generous.

Ugh, straight into Paul Kim, possibly my least favorite of the men going into this. Look for lots of "I'm so R&B it hurts" runs and plenty of flat notes. Anyone else note that Paul rocks the Jonny Bravo hairstyle? Oh dear god we've got WHAM IN THIS BITCH!! And NOBODY knows WHAM like me. Wow bad note on the first "got no rhythm" there. OUCHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH OMG OMG OMG!!! We have a "worst note ever hit outside the first 3 weeks" moment. This was going decent till he tried to access the false and then it went to hell in a handbasket. Start the tally up ladies and germs, George Michael 1 contestants 0. Absolutely horrible and a ticket home IMO. Final score 2/10. My only disagreement with the judges is I would say Simons rating of it as a 3rd rate effort was to high, I go 5th rate at best. BTW to those of you scoring at home the whole song was flat and I'm a genius.

Chris Richardson next who gets the whole JT comparision but we shall see. I like the gear in the vignette at any rate. He sings that "I don't wanna be" by Gavin Degraw which has been sung before on the show. He falls apart here and its painfully apparent he has a soul voice and rock = disaster for him. I like the jacket, dislike the shirt, ok with the tie and am tired of the vest/jacket/shirt/tie with jeans thing. Enough already. Anyway this performance is nasal and craptacular. Better than the others though. 5.5/10 Wow Simon continues to drop knowledge he is dead on with his assessment. At some point someone worth a damn is going to have to appear right?

Hey you know earlier when I said all the gay community bailed on bear Sundance because he buttoned up the chest hair? Well guess what all the votes have been transferred to CAPTAIN TWINK young Sanjaya complete with MJish hushed talking and Tiger Beat circa 75 mop of hair. He sings the old Stevie standard "knocks me off my feet", as expected in understated manner. Wow he has no power and surprisingly seems to lack range here. Donell Jones has a version of this that is grand BTW, approximately 23454 times better than this. I also sing this better than he does. Again I am not famous. Damn. More commercials and time for Chris Sligh, an early fan favorite for his crass humor and soulful voice. And BOY IS HE ANTI-ESTABLISHMENT as his tie is PARTIALLY UNDONE!!!! Another look that is way overdone tonite as no one save Blake can dress. He comes back with "The Typical" and amazingly I don't know this song. He sings it decently but lacks a little depth and power. Still in the top portion of tonites contestants and its about a 6. 9 people in and we havne't had anyone kill it. Only one trip to PAI land, what a night. Maybe the final 3 guys will save the day and give me a glimmer of hope for this season.

Time for Jared Cotter who reps NY and might not suck. He busts out the Brian McNight whooping stick for the 1000th time on Idol. He pulls it down an octave though and has a nice voice. This guy has a decent look going but I don't dig the brown shoes. The chicks will like him but he's got some caterpillar eyebrows. OK now we got something, dude is doing this pretty effortlessly just needs to take it home. Losing it a bit here in the outro and a sloppy transition to false but the notes in false are kinda there. Will do for the nite and absolutely on par with the best of the nite. No way this cat is going home. 6ish/10.

Next up is AJ Tabaldo, who I feel sucks. They just let him in on the 5th time so he is banned from coming back again. Smart song choice here as he goes uptempo, the first to do this 10 songs in. Style points off for the so yesterday collar pop and semi-tuck. More points detracted for DEVISTATINGLY GAY DANCE MOVES. Hey this cat can sing a bit though, and I feel like a douche as his false is the only one standing up tonite. This is in the rarified air of tops for the night though. Which should tell you about the level of comp we're seeing here. Its kinda like being the tallest midget in town.

Last but not least is Phil Stacey, he of the AI baby. That vignette gaurantees he hits VFTW hit list early. What is he singing??? Wow dude was so off key I couldn't recognize "Couldn't ask for more". But he is bringing it on the chorus shaking off the cobwebs. Of course he is also wearing the jakcet/tshirt/jeans ensemble, making it I believe 8 of twelve wearing it in some form. Overkill? You be the judge. He is really bringing it home here and really heads and shoulders above the competition on the second half. Among this field thats golden baby. I give the first half a 2 and the second half an 8, and somehow this combines to make a 6/10 and a PAI rating overall.

In conclusion this was a terrible show and does not bode well for the guys this year. Seacrest is a douche and talks down to Simon for being rough when he is true. Simon absolutely emberasses him and Seacrest digs the hole deeper. I hate Seacrest and his riches for no apparent reason in case you didn't know.

PS-I missed Rudy's amazingly gay pelvic thrust on first viewing. And I overated Sundance. He was so sharp its pitiful.

She's wearing the dress cut that seems to be her calling card and looking pretty nice. The earrings are a bit much if I must comment. A little Alicia Keys right off the bat, which can go either way. Well this is already better than anything we saw last nite, minus the typical "on the knees" bravado. This girl has a nice voice and can really power it out there, very nice performance. Girls got game and confidence. 7/10 for a little problem on the bridge.

Decent at best here, and she is in trouble because her top end is about 10 notes away from her bottom end you dig? Very Melissa Ethridge type voice. Which I again hate. Decent crap. 4.5/10. This girl is on the fast track home as well.

Sabrina Sloan time. I dig her look sometimes but she is very angular, you know hot from some angles and like a harpy hag from others. Nice look for her with jeans over a long white top, but the bracelets ar a bit much. Could do with a better makeup job also. Oh yeah she's singing Aretha Franklin, and it is on point. Feeling comes thru from her vocals, which is an oddity this year. Combine the vocals with the hotness potential and we have someone who could make some noise. 7.5/10

Nice outfit here tonite though although the vest coulda been left off and it would have been better. She just hasn't got the power to really be a threat, and she followed Melinda. Bad combo. 4/10 or so and its SUCH an easy song to sing. BLEH. Wow what a pretty face though she has a beautiful complexion.

For the record it IS painfully apparent Ryan is trying to get into her pants.

Gina the "rocker" is next. She goes MAXO ROCKO WITH CELINE DION. I mean are you @#$@%% kidding me? Nothing says ALT CHICK like a black leather jacket, BOFFO GOTH CROSS and craptacular shclock. Its painfully apparent she can sing, but also painfully apparent she isn't gonna win, as she loses the big note sliding flat then sharp. Nice outro though to save it and PAI in the end. 6/10. Again my amazing musical ear is reinforced by Simon.

Lakesha Jones is next. For those of you scoring at home, this contest is basically down to which black chick is gonna win. Talent wise Jordan/Lakesha/Melinda run laps around the competition while playing the trombone barefoot. SHAMELESS PLUG time as the Dreamgirls song gets sung. Wow. Wooooooowwwwwwww. HOUSE ON FIRE!!! A timeless performance that even blows Melinda away. 10/10. Up there with the Fantasia red dress and Bo Bice Whipping tree performance for an all timer. You could feel how bad she wanted it and boy did the emotion transfer. In the words of Lil' Flip...............GAME OVER.

Wow grammar police throughout the nation are on RED ALERT TILT with the classic "I AIN'T missin you at all". This guy was pretty good last week, but this week he sucks. Its like he's trying to hard to change the rythym of the words so its disjointed. He kinda closes it out with power (which no other guy has) so it will be top 3 of the night. I really HATE his shoulder side tying shirt btw, it screams Edward Scissorhands. Ends better than it starts (theme with this cat?), PAI but not great by any stretch of the imagination. 6/10. On the sliding 2007 mens AI scale thats about an 8.

Better vocal than Phil though. 5.5/10. And on the sliding scale thats 8ish.

For those of you wondering I primed the system for this performance by listening to the original on Itunes during the ENDLESS COMMERCIAL BREAK OF DOOM. Still you cheap bastards haven't started sending in money for a Tivo box. I hate you all. OK I like the pants, like the hat. Like the green shirt and dig the whole look mucho. No dancing. Hiss and Boo. This cat has mad skills with a scat/beat box break. Put this guy in a studio and he will blow it out as a producer. NICE FALSE. Great performance. This dude makes the other guys look like the bags of monkey crap they are. 8/10. The girls actually have some comp now. Simon for once is a bit off.

Time for Brandon Rogers, complete with a grandma dedication. He's gonna sing Cyndi Lauper's "Time after Time". His voice just seems a bit off tonite, and this is an odd song choice. Might spell BUSTO for him because its just so hard to showcase your voice on a song like this. Wow how completely dull. The original is so much better with the emotion is Cyndi's voice but this was BLEH. 4/10 and thats pushing it. Simon is really pissed tonite and he's LETTING IT SHOW.

Chris Richardson time. Didn't like him much last week lets see what he's got now. This cat is also know as BJT, short for bootleg Justin Timberlake. Now that is an ugly outfit man. That would place him slightly behind "How can germans like David Hasslehoff" but ahead of "How does Gwen Stefani actually sell CD's" for those scoring at home. Will we get an EPIC CHEST HAIR appearance tonite for the bear crowd? WE HAVE THE SECOND VIGNETTE TEARS APPEARANCE. He busts out with Wilson Pickett and Mustang Sally. This guy is born to sing blues music it just bleeds out of his voice, but he's making a good run of it here. If they have a blues week he will blow it out for sure. This is a disjointed arrangement here and it shoudl have ended on the big false note but its good in an odd kinda way. 7/10.

Gina opens the show with Heart. She is wearing a red dress that would look much better if she was 10 lbs. lighter. She has no sense of style and singing "Alone" while claiming to be goth and wearing a Grammy's style dress sends so many conflicting messages I can't list them all here. She is sharp towards the end but this is alright I guess. Don't much care for her to be honest. 5.5/10

Ryan hypes DIXIE CHICKS next, OMG YES...........BLEH. How these bunch of sad sacks won the Grammy for record of the year over RHCP is beyond me, but the Grammys are voted on by people so out of touch with the music scene (Dylan won record of teh year 3 years ago get real) that its pitiful. Methinks the hollywood sets political views and the Chicks huge ordeal a few years ago = Grammy for the most self absorbed pieces of crap I can think of. Well Paris Hilton and Britney. And Lindsey Lohan. OK so maybe they aren't the most self absorbed pieces of crap I can think of but they do suck.

I say all that to say I'm not looking forward to the song, less because Ailana is singing it. Fortuantely she will be onstage for me to look at. Sadly she cannot sing. Better than someone who isn't hot and can't sing.

Its LAKESHA time baby. She is rocking a leggy skirt and the trademark GAP TEETH OF DOOOOOOOOOOM. She's gonna sing the standard "Midnight train to Georgia" by Gladys knight (and the Pips). This girl is wearing the ugliest wig I've seen in recent memory or else her hairstylist sucks. I would take this second to point out the outstanding work the backup singers are doing. Amazing. God dancing Paula is annoying. Good vocal work here but the spark is lacking from last week. Still miles ahead of the fellas this season. This girl has a big voice and unlike Jen Hudson she has personality to boot so she's gonna go deep. Wow the leopard skin shoes are ugly with that orange shirt. The pumpkin scene from Norbert is all I can think of.

I know they have a system for singing order but they are really doing Melinda a bad one by constantly putting her around Lakesha. She has clearly the second best voice in the contest but the inevitable comparisons (skin color, weight, vocal style) hurt her. She would stand out more sprinkled around the lesser voices.

Time for my Chris Daughtry rant. I like the cat alright and think his album is pretty decent. But the fact that he wants no association with Idol infuriates me. They chose home as a tweak to him dissing them in case you didn't know. Hey asshole a year ago you were CHANGING TIRES AT NTB and now your RICH. Talk about an ungrateful bastard. Its time for NNM (no neck Melinda) to sing and lets see what she's gonna sing. Well Jazz standards seem to be a recurring theme on Idol this week so I guess that means they won't feature a week on them later. "My Funny Valentine" is the song of choice here and I haven't the slightest clue who sung it, other than basically 1000 different people. Let me tell you something she is singing Lakesha under the stage tonite. Amazingly full and rich performance with feeling and real style. I think this was as good or better than Lakesha last week. Great. 9.5/10 and a real head turner only short of the elusive 10 (who doesnt' want a 10 from me???) by a bit of presentation.

Shoot me now. ANTONELLA SINGS CELINE??? Thats like my greyhound barking Beethoven's 9th in its entirity. Now you know, I know, and everyone under the age of 40 knows Celine Dion sucks. However she has one of the best pop voices of the last 20 years. And her songs, while sappy beyond redemption are quite vocally challenging. Combine this with the fact that Antonellas vocal talent is about on par with said Greyhound (actually my grey might be a bit better) and you have a RECIPED FOR IMPENDING DISASTER.

Luckily for every straight man and bi/les woman in America I can spend this performance LOOKING AT ANTONELLA. Over under pre-performance is a 3.5. Play along at home and predict, its FUN PEOPLE. Given my hate of Celine and piss poor vocals the under is the runaway favorite at the moment.

Anyway Antonella (AKA DEEP THROAT) is dedicating to her brothers. Not your photographer? For shame. Man the rack is looking fab in her green number. Still no cleavage or skin tight action. BAD MOVE. I have thought the same and realized the reason I don't like the females is I don't like (as a very general rule) songs sung by female leads. Tons of Whitney (some of which is good soul but no one else can sing), Celine (sucks), etc.

haha...I don't even watch when it's the guys' night to perform. They should be eliminated from the show...all of them. Unfortunately, that would never happen, as it would cut off the entire female fanbase for this show, which would be a severe cut in ratings....they would be stupid to do that, even though it would please me. I couldn't beleive Sanjaya stayed and Atonella was voted off either, reminds when Fantasia was almost voted off 3 years ago when she was clearly the best singer than the others who was in the lowest voted group at that time.
