So, that doesn't seem so bad right? I missed work, so what? Well, let me explain. I work at UPS as a loader, and for the past few weeks, I haven't been doing so good. I keep letting packages that don't go in my truck, ride on through, and this has happend enough for me to get a letter warning me of a pending suspension from work. I am getting good at it again though. Anyways, today I had to go to NY to pick up some of my family. Well, it turns out that they missed their flight so I drive on back home. Well, as soon as I get near the Lincoln Tunnel back to NJ, I get stuck in a traffic jam that lasted for well over 2 hours that barely moved, and even after I was through the tunnel, there was more traffic to be had because of closed roads left and right. Anyways, I need to be at work by 5:30pm, and by the time the traffic is behind me, it's about 6:40pm. At about 5:20pm I told my supervisor that I would be late, so he knew. Well, later on, on the way to work, I notice I had NO GAS from all the traffic time, and there was no way I could make it to work and then home with the tank I had. So I tell my supervisor, which gives a very oddly short "Ok" response to the fact that I will no longer be able to show up because of two things. 1-I have no money. Nothing. Nada. Only maybe $1 worth of change in my car, and I get payed tomorrow. 2- No one was around to give me a ride or lend me some cash.

Anyways, I've had this same kind of thing happen once before, where I wasn't able to tell my supervisors that I would miss work at least one week in advance, and they get mighty pissed off if you just don't show up. Well, am I in deep shit or am I just being a girl about it? I mean, the load I work in needs everyone to be there to run smoothly, so me being out WILL affect them. Not to mention this probably sounds like a bad excuse for me to not just go in, which sucks because I NEED this job right now, and can't afford to miss days/get fired/suspended. This is a Union job, so that might help me some, but I don't understand what they can do all that well.

So, what should I know to protect myself in case they try to pull off some fucking bullshit out of their ass to get me out of there, or maybe they even have all the right to do so? Please, any helpful feedback will do...

The job may be lost, but you can get another one.

When I was in college, they would give you a credit card pretty much for the asking. Maybe get one, use it in cases like those so a matter of $30 or so doesn't have to fuck you over like that, and DON'T FUCK UP with charging a bunch of shit. If you can do that, the card will serve it's true purpose. If not, you will be in debt right out of the gate and possibly much longer depending on your eventual spending habits and earning power.

It will take a lot of discipline that most college students don't have. That I didn't have. But again, it can help if properly used.

If you have already gotten a card (or two) and fucked up, then disregard this advice I guess. Good luck.

lolz.

If things aren't going so well at your job, find another. The pay may not be the same but it beats not working at all.

this is why people hate ups i see.

That and the fact that no one really tells us to be careful with packages, so a lot of shit gets broken. I try to be careful at least, but try telling that to the majority of people that toss HDTVs left and right just 'cause they are angry at the job.

Anyways, so you guys are saying I might even get fired over this? Damn. Time to start looking for another job then... Had no idea this could end up being so serious.

You might get fired. I'd definitely look into getting another job right now, just to be safe.

Why don't you get a credit card?

Yes, because the thing the broke, soon-to-be-unemployed guy needs MOST is a credit card.

Or you can just try to not suck at this one so hard. Either way it's win.

I know alot of people who work or have worked in a UPS warehouse. Some of the shit these clowns pulled on a daily basis and got away with is just absurd. I doubt you will get fired bro, they may pull you aside or someshit but whatev.

You sound pretty fucking stressed to man, try not to worry about it so much it's only a job. Whatevers gonna happen will happpen no point in beating your brain up over it. Like I said though I highly doubt you will be fired.

You are actually right....last thing I need is a credit card, to be honest...

Anyways, I go in at 5:30pm, and I do think I may be over-reacting, but whatever. Been real stressed over shit lately. People DO get away with the most rediculous shit ever in that place, but that isn't always the case, espeacially since I'm not on their favorite list as it is.

<breaks 3rd person>

I worked at UPS from 1996-2001 & depending on who your supervisor is,they'll give you an excused absense, but you won't get fired. If they try to fire you then go to your Union rep. That's the one thing I SERIOUSLY miss about UPS,the Union has your back.

Too bad the Union guy has a bad history of not really trying to defend you at all. But yeah, the Union is cool.

Dude...you're a moron that can't do his job properly. They should have fired you along time ago.

as mean as it sounds, thats how you should think proffesionally. if you really cant handle the job, you should look else where. ive been in those situations before. theres no reason to be too stressed about. it wasnt your sincere intention to miss out on work. things just didnt work out that day. if you get fired for that, then you shouldnt feel guilty.
